    Preparation is not an excuse. The Aussies haven't played a test in almost a year and we looked flat as anything compared to them. This is a long-term problem. England are consistently 30-4 multiple times a series. In fact you can't even call them batting "collapses" any more, that implies they're not frequent! This series is a write off and if we win a single game I'd be amazed. A major overhaul of the batting is needed in 2022. Bring in people with a solid, basic technique and a mindset to bat time, even if they haven't got amazing first class records. Poor techniques and impatience get found out very quickly at test level.

      The problem is this team is full of batsmen the attention span of a goldfish. Too many t20 batsmen who don't have any batsmanship skills. It is not about technique. It is about building an innings, pacing an innings, knowing when to attack, knowing when to defend.

    @roymahendran8494 3 роки тому +21

    On TMS Ian Chappell made a vey good point about Root. He’s been a captain for a long time and he’s simply not captain material. He doesn’t know how to choose his players and has no idea about grabbing those opportunities. Surely he knows he’s good enough to lead this side.

    • @guymulry6168
      @guymulry6168 3 роки тому +4

      Totally agree. Great batsman, but he's not a leader of men. If Eng can sort the top order out and get some strong leadership, then they can start competing again. If Eng do get steam rollered in the ashes, Root will still probably keep the captaincy and Burns will still be opening the batting next summer 🤦‍♂️

    • @Dilmahkana

      I think Root is captain material. It's more structural, cultural problems. It's an unsettled team too, no one can rally a team as a solid group in that situation. If this top 6-7 play the whole series, things will get better via consistency surely?

    I don’t think leaving out Broad & Anderson was not the issue as it does not matter who you have as bowlers if you cannot occupy the crease and bat for runs and at the same time but you have to bat for time because if you don’t then you are gifting a major advantage to your opponents I hope that England can bounce back and at least provide a good contest and put themselves in a place to win.
    As an Australian the Ashes is my favourite time of the cricket year and I absolutely do not like it becoming such a one sided contest and in turn Test Cricket as a format is being tarnished. The format of T20 cricket should not be the leading format of cricket ever.Test cricket is the best format and the original and still the best.

Plus we seem to have rotten luck as well. England have landed in Australia and gone into the series without any cricket beforehand in Australia like you said though. I do miss Sky having the rights to show the ashes. The cast is so much better than BT and the most annoying aspect of BT is they do not show what the Aussie commentators are reviewing. We end up seeing someone’s boot.
    As for the game, typical England. When they have a bad session(s) it is a match defining session(s). England have been so poor with the bat for a substantial period of time. As soon as the focus turned to white ball cricket the red ball team dropped in standard. England will not win any overseas tour against decent opposition because they simply cannot bat long. As for the next test, we saw it in the previous Ashes tour, we assumed the pink ball would benefit us and we still got beat and quite comfortably in the end, I do not see any difference this time round even with Jimmy and Broad back.

    I think the experts have not watched the India Australia Series 20-21
    1) The Indian Team did not take unnecessary risks against Green when he bowled the few overs with Old ball 70-80 over period, thus increasing the workload for other Australian quicks when Starc Potency start to reduce after 1st 2 Tests . Green did not any wicket in that series.
    2) To Labuchagne and Smith, they exploited their tendency to flick balls on off stump in the air by keeping men behind sqaure and Mid wicket.
    I think if England use 2 tactics it will help them in the rest of the 4 tests, dont take unnecessary risks against Green and keep a lid on Smith and Labuschagne scoring.

    The selectors need to be ruthless and ambitious with changing things up. Burns is in very poor form with his head over at nearly second slip when the bowl is delivered - I'd replace him despite him basically being one of the the top 3 batters in the last year. Give Crawley a second chance as an opener. Give Pope a shot at 3 if you want him to be the future of the team, have Root and Malan to anchor the innings at 4 and 5, and play Stokes at 7 to play and counter-attack with the tail. A right handed spinner is a good change to left handers. Controversial maybe but just try something a bit left field.

    Well they had little to no practice heading into the match, broad said it himself they're probably the worst prepared side to ever play ashes. But the problem that eng encountered wasn't necessarily due to lack of practice, this is something that had hints in 2018-19 and really has come to a head in the last two years....the collapses. So many times....sometimes from the very first wicket, other after root is dismissed. Unless other english batsmen step up, you can play every swing and pace bowler under the sun and it still won't be enough. It's always root and one other guy, it needs to be root and atleast 4 other guys. Only then will England be able to consistently win 3 or 4 days of a test match, thus winning the test.

    As an Aussie viewer honestly I didn't think Leach bowled many bad balls across the test. I can recall about 3 or 4 genuine pies that deserved to disappear.
    But the Aussies were absolutely committed to making sure he had an economy of 6 and over, forget 4 and over. Marnus basically sacrificed his wicket to try and put his foot on the gas unnecessarily.
    Sure he had a bad game but he needs to realise that the Aussies are gonna be coming like freight trains at his bowling. They don't want him to Swann them down like he did in '10/'11.

Len Hutton did it and dont forget another fine captain Ponting lost Glenn McGrath just before the Edgbaston 2nd test in 05 but won the toss and did the same...that didnt work out well either. Claimed it was his worst mistake. Similar to an attacking declaration chasing a win then losing...anything can happen on the day. Ordinary decisions are over-analysed with hindsight, but the good ones you make are simply glossed over and forgotten.

  • @rizwanwahhab

    The biggest problem is that England can’t soak up pressure spells when they are batting. The best teams can ride and wave off tough spells of bowling, which this England side simply can’t (and that does include Root himself). Against a top bowling unit like the Aussies, it will be all about England being able to counter the spells and pile on the runs where the Aussies aren’t at their best, but given how effective and well rounded their bowling attack is, it won’t be an assured scenario. Malan and Root’s partnerships are England’s only hope, and we just have to hope Stokes builds up enough confidence through the series and hope he delivers 2-3 special innings through the remainder of the tour, as I highly doubt Pope and Buttler will offer much support other than their pretty 20-30s (as per their test averages) and kick on once they are set.

    As wonderful as it is to hear these guys, they’re probably being a bit too soft here. Taking the example of the recent India series, there are many things which are way too lenient at the international.
    Hameed scores two twenties, but it’s fine because it’s his first test in Australia. Gill made his debut after the team was bowled out for 36, and then he hit a match winning innings in the 4th innings at the Gabba.
    Leach’s job is just to hold up an end and give the pacers a break? That’s too negative a mindset. You can never tell Ashwin to hold up an end. Let’s forget Ashwin, his quality is just way too good. Washington Sundar picked up Smith as his first test wicket on his debut. You can’t just back off in Australia. You have to be at it all the time.
    And lastly, a particular moment setting up the tone for the entire series? You’ve gotta fight it out in Australia. We got bowled out for 36, won the next test in a bit over 3 days. Australia needed 5 wickets to win with the new ball, Ashwin and Vihari battled it out in pain(both missed the next test). We scored 324 on day 5 at the “Gabbatoir” . We were 180-6 in the first innings at the Gabba, ended up scoring 336. Whenever we were behind, we came back. Ponting had said after day 4 of the last test that India’s resolve will break down tomorrow, and it didn’t. We were in a clearly losing position at Lord’s, won that match by bowling England out in less than 2 sessions. You’ve always got to take the fight to them in Australia, you can’t show weaknesses or negative mindset. Can’t go in saying that a draw at the Gabba would be a good result. England’s mentality under Root is very poor
