    The best non-partisan pod cast currently, with great analysis , cricketing punditry and that typical British banter. Love the camaraderie between the panelists, insights and the respect these folks show for cricketers of other nationality. My only gripe is the technical aspect of this podcast. Surely Skysports can sponsor good cameras n lighting arrangement to enrich the experience. These gentlemen deserve better.

    The only reason I might push for Broad to play over Anderson at Adelaide is that if he can get it to swing in to Warner (assuming he plays) and get him out early the mind games could begin again which could prove vital if Smith doesn’t pick up his form.

      That’s why they should have picked Broad in the first test. Instead we didn’t go round the wicket enough to Warner and he battled (fluked?) his way to a decent score. He will be more confident now and I don’t think he will be quite so easy for Broad to dominate. England lost the initiative when they decided to drop Broad. The environment is worth a mention. This is the Gabba, Brisbane, and it is early December, it is hot, it is humid and there is only warm air drifting through and the likely event of tropical rain at any time of the 24 hour cycle. It is so hot to stand, run and field in the sun in a caldron like the Gabba where there is no breeze and when the clouds drift over it is still hot, the rain is warm and when the sun comes out again it feels like the glass ceiling just got washed. Any cricketer at the Gabba for the first time will be severely tested on staying 'ín the game'', the cricket will not be the problem for them. They will be okay when they get to the southern states where the heat is a dry one and a chance for coolish air flows. But when they get to the SCG the humidity will have reached Sydney. Enjoying the commentary immensely, nothing like a good old test match. To those who say it is slow orta get the pads on, grab a bat and get out to the crease, then will learn how fast test cricket is.

    England have got to be really careful about putting too much into the pink ball. England have never won an away D/N test and Australia have won every single one they've ever played. Starc has almost 50 wickets in 8 D/N tests at 18 and Cummins's average is 16 for his 25ish wickets. The conditions may well suit England bowlers more than the usual Aussie pitches, but it'll suit the Aussie bowlers just as much! As usual the batting is the problem. If you get blown away for 150 your bowling attack is almost irrelevant.

    As an Aussie, I must say Nasser spoke correctly the whole way through.
    The Adelaide pitch is still the Adelaide pitch. You need a spinner.
    If you win the toss, you bat first. It'll be a tricky first hour, but then it'll flatten out and you can cash in before the evening comes. Then you have to deal with the swinging ball.
    But between those times, you need a spinner. And Leach won't go for as many on this deck as he did at the GABBA. Purely because Adelaide Oval eventually turns.
    The reason why Australia have won so many pink ball tests isn't because of what happens at night, but they've been well equipped with what is needed during the day.
    England need to be wary of that.

    Great work guys as always. Lyon bowls a lot of overspin so if you see anyone playing ridiculous low % shots like a reverse sweep, give them a clip behind the ears and a quick plane ride home.
    I cannot believe i didnt see a single proper sweep shot to Lyon in Brisbane. That wicket was playing true in Englands 2nd dig with very little irregularity of bounce, yet for some strange reason right hand bats were more keen to attempt reverse sweeps against the spin than trying to pierce the field on the leg side. Absolute stupidity when quick runs arnt required. If there's a gap at 3rd man with Lyon bowling it will be deliberate. Late cut a shorter ball or angle your bat, but dont bring 25 added forms of dismissal into play trying to reverse sweep a spinner that relies on bounce and overspin.
    Both Buttler and Robinson tried it. Do they think it will impress someone ? All that happens if you hit it well is that it sponsors you to try it again. The end result is inevitable and if Oz see it they will deliberately leave a titanic sized gap backward of square hoping you do it again. Thats a mini-battle you will lose.

    As a batsmen there could be 3 issues for a batting fail: issue 1- a poor technique has creeped into your game and that has been called out by the bowlers or 2- you have gotten unlucky or have got out to some brilliant deliveries which no batsman can handle or 3- you are batting in a style that doesn't suit you. I think with the English this is problem no 3. Butler chose to play a half shot in both innings outside off stump which is not his method. pope chose to cut a spinner when he is poor at reading a spinners length and trajectory. 3. Malan chose to come down the track to a spinner when he is clearly.more comfortable playing in the back of his crease.

    Something Rob Key mentioned in minute 12:00 about Giles is not exactly accurate. He had ordinary ashes series whenever he played even in 2005 when England one. Australia went after him. Only Swann has ever done well against Australia as a spinner. And let's face it, touring teams who have won in Australia in the last 10 years have won with a quality spinner in the side. Swann in 2010-11, Jadeja and Kuldeep in 2018, Ashwin in 2020 are prime examples. Even in 2016-17 when south Africa were in Australia they had Keshav Maharaj debut in Perth and was instrumental in winning the test and series for them.

    A few points here that are all sort of connected. O Robinson is a good bowler. Hes very accurate with excellent variation which is crucial on these flat pitches. He reminds me off Glen McGrath a bit but can also bat and certainly at number 8. Unfortunately for O.R he is in a generation of English bowlers where we have an embarrassment of Riches. I'm not overly keen on these bits and pieces players and especially bowlers that can bat a bit as oppose to a jaque kallis(yeah we wish lol). In contrast to the above our Batting is the worst I've seen in my lifetime. Even Atherton/Nasser Era we had players that could get stuck in, with likes of Nasser and Butcher complimenting world class shot makers like Thorpe,Stewart and then later on Trescothick, Vaughan and the very underrated Paul Collingwood. This England side have very poor openers and a middle order thats constantly under pressure when we are 4 down for a couple of dozen runs. These days we don't have a Collingwood or a Thorpe to steer the tail and if Roots goes cheaply we will very rarely post 300 let alone 400. Stokes average is mid 30s and he bats at 5 and he is considered one of our premium batsmen. Dont get me wrong anyone who has 250 against South Africa in South Africa all be it with no D.Steyn in the attack is no mug. He just doesn't have the consistency. I think Wokes is a brilliant Cricketer and he could play at 7 and Stokes at 6 and butler at 5 so he's not batting with the tail to squeeze in a 4-5 seam attack with O Robinson at 8 Wood 9 Broad 10 Anderson 11.

    What does anyone think of this as a starting line up: burns, hameed, malan, root, lawrence, stokes, buttler, woakes, robinson, Broad, Anderson. 5 seamers, root and lawrence to offer occasional slower bowling. ENgland’s strength is their bowling. So why not just accept that playing a stronger bowling line up is the key.

    I would love to hear the panel discuss the option of changing the England team setup ... currently they play 6 batters, a wk and 4 specialist bowlers ... I would suggest England would be better served playing 5 batters, 1 wk, 1 allrounder and 4 specialist bowlers ... I would solve the problems of falling a bowler short if one of them breaks down with injury or on gets hit out of the attack (like Leach last match), as well as it would take the pressure of Stokes as he would not be needed to bowl (if the knee is an issue)... It might leave the team somewhat short on batting, but you get that feeling anyway in the current set up...

      The team they picked for Brisbane had 5 batsmen and stokes as the all rounder, giving them 5 bowlers. And really, Woakes is a bowling allrounder too. To my mind in Australia that is an unbalanced team. 3 quicks, 1 spinner and 6 batsman is the best method, at least down under. Australian teams have generally gone this way and it works pretty well.

    • @feck1582

      @feck1582 2 роки тому

      @@Superfly1503 And I would like to add to that, that if you only play 4 bowlers, none of them can break down or be hit out of the attack, because that leaves you with 2 bowlers and an allrounders, which certainly is completely unbalanced.... even Australia now play an allrounder in Green ....

      @@feck1582 for me it looks like one too many bowlers. At least one too many of the same bowler. I take your point about bowlers breaking down but to me as a non Englishman that seems like negative thinking. If you’re picking a fifth bowler because you’re worried about breaking down then there are other issues at play.
      Having said that, if they continue to bowl such negative lines then they could pick 8 bowlers and not create enough chances. Pitch it up, aim at the stumps and make the batsmen take a risk to score. I know Buttler dropped 2 catches but they’re the only chances they’ve had. Lots of plays and misses but those balls weren’t close enough to the stumps. At 2/221 the English are in trouble.

    • @feck1582
      @feck1582 2 роки тому +1

      @@Superfly1503 Off course ..you are absolutely right ... in general 4 bowlers and an allrounder is plenty and breaking down should not be a part of the thought proces and I certainly would not advocate my 5-1-1-4 option for Australia (although India and NZ quite often use that setup), but recent past would suggest England are in a different position to Aus. With the loss of Archer and Stone (and even Carse) they lost 66% of their 90 mph potential, leaving them with limited bowling options (not so much in numbers, but very much in variation).. My suggestion would allow for them to pick an extra bowler and may be think outside the box a bit.. The only reason they have not picked Wood in this current match, is because they are afraid he breaks down and they are left with no pace whatsoever.. My option would have allowed space to include him and use him in really short 2 or 3 over spells, with limited risk of him getting injured, but still retain some variation in the attack..
