Andre you should do an entire Nusrat album! You have no idea how much the people of India, Pakistan & Bangladesh (and more) will appreciate if you do that for us. You get it and you are the only person qualified enough to do Nusrat justice. Please upvote and help me convince Andre do a full Nusrat album.

No doubt! This really is cultural enrichment. And a lot of times what hard core liberals want to call “cultural appropriation” is really just cultural admiration. Don’t they get it? If you want to dress like a Nigerian or in a kimono it doesn’t mean you’ve got some evil agenda to absorb and eventually wipe out their culture. You admire certain aspects of these foreign cultures and are simply imitating them. Not mocking them! It’s cultural admiration!!!

Welcome to Qawalli bro. Metalhead from Pakistan. This genre of music...to be honest is rock and metal without the guitars. Listen to other compositions by Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali.....you'd be surprised that he was using polyrhythmic techniques and compositions that are similar to djent and prog metal.

Everyone who listens to music knows this guy and no one has been able to do what you did in how you fused this together. There’s currently a big wave of people fusing classics like these into pop (check out coke studio) but nothing like this out there for what you have accomplished here. It is amazing that you can make so much noise and not step on the vocals from a simple technical perspective, but to augment them musically without interfering is mind blowing. For anyone wondering...
The lyrics refer to not the mating of elephants, rather a trance like state of being "musth" which means entranced in love. So Ali is a revered figure in shia and sunni Islam.
This song is dedicated to the love of Ali and how one can e entranced by it. "Must qalandar" is a phrase referring to a Sufi practitioner lost in love.

Great chord progression, it emphasizes the melody, and it enriches it, just amazing. And with those powerful voices the final result is incredible. If I allow myself to be creative about how their performance feels to me, not historically but emotionally speaking (because I’m yet totally oblivious to the cultural background of pieces like this), I would say this:
It feels, in the best and most impressive way, like music that evolved into bringing the intense energy that the most epic modern music has. Like Metal for example. Or something epic by Muse. But it never had/wanted electric instruments. Just singing and in some or many cases acoustic instruments of course, but the willpower to achieve intensity and epicness if the highest kind.
On top of that I love the song and love oriental sounding music or Indian music. The two Indian Ladies in the style of SOAD is my favourite with this one. Double peak position.

I would love to come over and see it again one day (my situation radically changed and I became my disabled Mum's full time carer and as such I had neither the time or the finances for such overseas travels) and as my time as my Mum's carer is coming to an end (after twenty years) I may well do just that.

This music is also very popular in Afghanistan and my father has tons of CDs and Cassettes from him and other qawwali artists, Like Nashenas or the Sabri Brothers, but Ustad Fateh Ali Khan was always his favourite. I must admit that to me this genre of music kind of always lacked a bit of "fire" or "spice" and as such I really love your interpretations here, as they add exactly what I was missing, allowing me to get all nostalgic in a new, "metalled-up" way. 😊

Now, through Andre's work. I came to realise while looking back to modern choir singers, these Pakistani singers are actually a FULL BAND of their own. I have yet to wait and see if I'll be hearing a choir that has a MODERN FULL BAND concept (NOT MODERN INSTRUMENTS but ONLY VOICES that do riffs).
I'm not a Pakistani but... these singers are REAL LEGENDS.

It will hard to translate this to exactly what it means but it is sort of a religious ritual chant if you can imagine it like. Mast qalandar means a saint of the highest order (qalandar) and he is in sort of mystic trance (mast). The qalandar is praising his masters the one above him in the saintly order.
