  • The Kenmore 1410 is a unique machine in that it was designed for doing buttonholes. Unlike most machines that use universal attachments this machine has a special bobbin cover that includes a gear driven from under the machine to activate the attachment. This allows more accurate buttonholes no matter what the thickness of the fabric is you're using.

THANK YOU so much for this series of videos!! I received this great machine from a friend of my mom, who stopped sewing due to her arthritis. I love to sew, and since I'm self-taught, I need all the help I can get! Thanks again!!

Thanks Brian for this demo. I just bought this model machine and wasn't sure how the buttonholer worked. Love your vids, and may I say love your voice.

Absolutely amazing; I'm glad I ran into your video. I just bought a Necchi (clone Japanese Universal) in amazing condition, and the folks I bought it from also threw in a KENMORE 1431 with all kinds of attachments plus a buttonhole attachment (slightly different than yours but along the same principles; so easy to use) as well, for just a few extra bucks. Yes, the Kenmore is worth it just for the buttonholder. It too sews amazing, all it needed was a little timing and oiling. I just wish other makers of sewing machines would do the same; (buttonhole attachments) they are so easy to use. The only downfall is they are made of plastic so I need to treat it extra careful.
    Gracias friend.

Thanks for this video. I am selling a Kennie 1410 and the machine did not come with the gear plate for buttonholes. I do have the plastic sizer plate. I also have the same buttonholer that you have in the box! This was wonderful to actually see the machine plow thru the denim. There is so much to learn about sewing from others. Thanks Brian.

The lever to the right of the 2 round buttons and on the front should be the reverse stitch. Hold it down and the machine will stitch in reverse. It is spring loaded so you have to hold it.

Oh i just bought almost identical to that a few months ago but doesnt have this lever. My inset in needle plates badly damaged so order a replacement a few days ago. This one and a morse I bought were almost pristine except damaged needle plate. Poor beginners must have pulled material then gave up sewing after being frustrated hitting needle plates. Still figuring out my 7 vintage and all different brands all bought in last 4 years. I have from a 1919 treadle through to these mid century and my own Elna I bought in the early 80s. I bought a Singer buttonhole attachement in the early 70s when i had a cheap plastic Singer. That caused me to get my Elna but the button hole maker fits on all low shank machines, does not have to be brand specific. Not sure if everyone knows that when they see the singer ones out there. My mother had one with her own Singer that i grew up on. Only straight stitch. I cannot get used to built in buttonholes because of always using the attachment. The one for straight stitch machine was awesome. They were metal. Mine is plastic templates. People dont go ahead and use their machines. I know people who sew everything with white thread because they dont want to change it if needed.

    Hello!
Thank you for the video. I'm just in the process of getting my mom's Kenmore 158.17501 back to life. She never oiled it once in 30 years! It's very similar in frame and dogfeed assembly as yours. I used WD40 to get the machine parts free. Then used a nice needle oiler (ProLong). Can spin on it's own momentum, now. I don't know if it can do button holest, but I saw a mysterious lever, you pointed out, beneath the bobbin cover plate. I can't figure out what it does on examination.

Hello! Thank you for your tutorial! I just purchased the 158.14001. I am at the beginning of my search on how to use it! The only thing that came with it was a bobbin. Now finding I need that plate. Of course a manual. Also, more attachments and bobbins as well as needles. Where do I find those? Are there any free download or printable manual instructions? Thank you for your help ... but still needing HELP! If this machine works ... I feel blessed because in my search for a new machine ... I questioned so many people I saw in the sewing departments and they all said "I still use my old Kenmore!"

I have this very machine. Thanks for the great tutorial on button holing. What I am really needing for my machine is repair of backstitch lever and bobbin winder that jams and stops. Took it to a supposedly good sewing machine repair, but they did not do a good job at all. Any ideas? By the way, my machine was a Christmas gift from my husband 43 or 44 years ago. I still like it.

Hi I just got one as a gift but the presser foot on it (kenmore 158.14001) is not working. Is it missing a screw or two? the 2 dots next to the presser feet? Would appreciate an answer. Thanks.
