  • In this Video I do a test to find out the easiest, fastest and BEST method for grilling steak in a snow storm during the middle of a freezing cold Canadian winter!
These were some value grade strip loin grilling steaks I picked up on special and certainly not my first choice (ribeye will always be my first choice) but at a fraction of the price I figured i would give them a go.
They got a quick dry brine while they rested at room temp for an hour with diamond kosher crystal salt. (hit with a bit of cracked black pepper just before hitting the grill)
Once the Napoleon propane grill and PK300 charcoal grill were fully preheated as hot as they would get at -15 Celsius we put our steaks on. I used a method of flipping them every 90 seconds, side to side to help them cook evenly inside and avoid getting a large grey band around the exterior on the meat and help with a more consistent pink "wall to wall" appearance. Once they hit 130 - 135f internal we pulled them off and rested at room temp before slicing in and giving them a try.
While both steaks were good, the charcoal grilled steak did cook a bit faster, had a better crust and char on the outside and certainly had better flavor.
So, in my opinion the bit of time and effort that goes into lighting up the charcoal grill is still worth it over the simplicity of the propane grill when it comes to grilling up a steak hot and fast.
If you haven't tried grilling steaks over charcoal for yourself then I highly recommend giving it a try, you can find very simple and cheap charcoal grills to get you started!

Thanks! Ya gas grills can have grease fires easily especially when on high. Always good to make sure it's good and clean before high heat grilling! 🍻

Always go charcoal, a chimney starter will cut you start time by half. Thanks for the video.

Charcoal wins every time! Yes a chimney starter would definitely speed things up but it's buried under the snow somewhere! Thanks!! 🍻

@@macsgrillshack I love your set up and I’m bit jealous of all your grills. You can keep your cold weather up there though.
