I'm glad you guys liked the song, and felt moved by it - but you totally misunderstood what they were singing about. This song is part of a story about a group of essentially peaceful villagers who were attacked from outside (according to the story), who wanted to be left alone to live in peace. Note the part about "How can I talk about coexistence when you only understand the language of the sword?" (etc) The dialog between the men was an exchange of threat and counterthreat between attacker and villager - and the villagers realizing that they were going to have to fight or die. This song is NOT a celebration of war, it is a lamentation of it. If you watch the LIFA live concert in full, and pay attention to the lyrics and translations, you will understand better what is going on. This band is NOT a Nordic Viking "Kill 'em all and let Odin sort 'em out" band. That's part of why they are so good. Also, as others have pointed out, this music is harking back to a time long before the "Viking" era. If you understand the background of this group's efforts, you will appreciate them all the more. Thanks for listening to them with an open mind.

Which harkens to farther back when the bloodlines of celts and vikings swam in the bodies of prototypical endoeuropeans that gave us the brahmans of India, warriors of the western stepp and persia. The language they're speaking is old German. That, sandskrit and old Gaelic are root forms of the prototypical endoeuropean language that's responsible for approximately 46% of all languages spoken today. They are a powerful act. It's to the merit of our yearnings for ancient things that you reacted so emotionally.

I saw them this summer and it was truly one of the best experiences in my life.
They open their "concerts", which are rituals and not just music, by saying this "prayer" together with the audience:
"Remember, that we all are brothers.
All people, beasts, tree and stone and wind.
We all descent from the one great being, that was always there,
before people lived and named it,
    before the first seed sprouted."
I'm very happy that you took all of their work in with your whole heart.
And it worked, as I could witness.
Not because of your heritage as a certain nationality, but because of your heritage as a human being.

Eternal glory the Gods our! Glory to the one and multiple Power in all its manifestation! I am always there, where I should be and my Spirit is obliged to keep all that is given by Eternity in many times multiplying. Where the Soul is in other Worlds, the lessons of Power are taken, and the Spirit becomes stronger in it, following it. The soul without the spirit, as if sleeping, in the gloom, the Spirit fades, the Soul is beautiful, the Spirit creates, the Soul is dark, the Spirit destroys. The soul is in turmoil, the Spirit is dangerous, as long as the path of the Soul is not clear. The spirit of bez harmony with the Soul brings misfortune and misfortune

    • @katievonolendorp5894

      So true...
When I heard it O googled the background of the band, their descend, the musicians and singers, about their costumes and decorations and instruments and songs. How they were "born" and what they carry to the people.
Then, I was so hooked up and I heard it again amd again. I read the text. And the translation. And O sang with her. I dreamt of this song.
My religious background is Asatrù. And I am interested in philosophies like Buddhism. But I only practise Asatrù which means to stand by the ancestors. A revived religion after Christianity killed off everything else what people had in their heart and minds before knowing about Jesus.
A great man, no doubt! He brought wisdom to humanity. But our ancestors, too! The, told us how to survive in the cold and in the long darkness. Jesus' ancestors told their kids to bleed out animals while slaughtering because of the heat in middle east and because blood carries life.
Our ancestors drank blood (after slaughtering animals, not always when meeting a stranger! 😉😄😇) because in the cold it is precious energy and respectless against the dead animal to throw this away.
      Totally different cultures.
I love to learn about soul, energy and love of Jesus, Buddha, Zarathustra and lots of other wise people but my personal background from my Northern family (from mother's side they are Hungarian and Persian) is revived and I love zo be part of it and make it living on in my heart.
And every 3 months we celebrate this with lots of friends when jul, ostára or equinox is. These are real dates to me. Xmas is not because Jesus wasn't born in december and should it matter when the birthday of a great wise man in middle east was? Why not celebrating Buddha's birthday, too? A day off in spring would be nice! 😂👍🏻😁
We knoe so much about what was going on thousands of years ago in a far away desert. But we know too less about our own spiritual and pre-historic background.
For me it was so heart-filling to see some parts of historical knowledge learning to walk and dance again. In new clothes but real.
I had to read Latin texts in school like Tacitus and Gaius Julius etc. It was beautiful to read this songtext. OMG...💙💙💙

When Germania and the Saxon was taken, The remaining Nordics had to act, when they started to see that they failed, they started adventuring outwards..
Ofc there was those who chose gold above Honor, started hiring themselves out to the Holy Roman Empire, they betrayed us.. War corrupt everyone...

Yeah the Roman Empire squelched all Pagan Tribes. And eventually later on Christianity took over the Romans, but Christianity kept many Roman traditions. Thus "Roman Catholic" and even Regular Christianity have Pagan leanings.

@Pralaya Bodyworks "Heilung" is german and can mean both 'healing' and 'cure', depending on the context in which it is being used.
"Wir haben die Heilung für Covid-19 gefunden", for example, means 'we've found the cure (heilung) for covid-19'.
"Seine Heilung wird einige Wochen dauern" means 'his healing (process) will take several weeks'.
It's all a matter of context that the word is being used in.

The reason they sang that way Sori was to replicate the way it is believed that Scandinavian singers sounded during that historical period. It is a style of throat singing that there are historical accounts of foreigners describing as the sound of howling dogs or a cart riding over gravel. So like Vin said they did it right, they wanted to stay true to what they believe music from that part of the world would of sounded like. In fact many people have pointed to that Scandinavian throat singing style as the birth of what evolved into the harsh and guttural vocal style many metal bands use today. I have Norwegian, Celtic, and Germanic heritage and proud of it like we all should be of our heritage, so this style of music I really dig as well as a lot of Celtic folk music something about it just speaks to me on a primal level.

The male vocals is an ancient way of singing / chanting. Throat singing in laymans terms is how it was done. There are a lot of historical roman passages/documented writing of commanders of roman legions in the area of when they encountered these tribes that the throat singing they heard was the most terrifying thing to hear and a lot of battles against these tribes were outright avoided/canceled because of the sound and intensity of it.

Ibn al-tartushi about his visit to Hedeby, Denmark.: "I have never heard any more awful singing then the singing of the people in Schleswig. It is a groan that comes out of their throats, similar to the bark of the dogs but even more like a wild animal."
People are divided: one half is on the side of this abrhamic man and have no emotional connection to harshness of these vocals and find them ugly and "disapointing".
The other group loves it, has an instant connection, and a form of recognition. A tiny group repsonds rather intensely; especially during Heilung performances, and describe it as feeling a sort of rage, and being overcome with a very focussed lust for battle, a resolve. It's interesting ebcause those people are discribing what germanic people know as "wod"; a word that is in the name of Wodan/Odin, and it is exactly that: a type of overwhelming, rage in the form of a religious experience. No women have been documented experiencing this.

I am glad that you give this extremely exceptional Nordic group a chance. I tell you a little about its history. The group, which are two boys and one girl, have Norwegian, Danish and German nationality and uses instruments such as horns of different animals, drums painted with their own blood, human bones, rattles with human ashes, bells, stones, all to go back to first musical compositions that could be interpreted 10,000 years ago, in the iron age in northern Europe. All the letters are taken from carved gadgets from the era of the Nordic iron, such as arrowheads, bows, swords, rune stones and recite poems and psalms of war, peace and protection. Whereupon and for this, heilung, which means healing in German, is in close collaboration with archaeologists specializing in the field. The languages used by heilung are several. Among them are Latin, Old Danish, German and English. They were so successful with their first album that they had to release a new live album, which includes 2 new songs. Also a video of that album live and this year they released their second work, futha, which is a much more feminine work. His first album, Ofnir, is much more aggressive and masculine. They are also announcing the publication of the Blue Ray of the Lifa concert. During the concerts, some representations of how these ancient rituals of the iron age could be made. A few months ago they toured North America. Also just finished the soundtrack of the video game Hellblade 2. I hope this review helps you to understand a bit the context of this musical group. A hug from Spain.

Wardruna's Helvegen is similar (Norwegian folk music). The melody is beautiful. They (and one of the singers whose name is Einar Selvik who also does solo stuff) also wrote a bunch of music for the Vikings TV series. You should totally also check out Vesania's Notion. The vocalist is the bassist of Behemoth. Love what you guys do, which says a lot cuz I usually only like reaction videos of memes. You all make some really good and interesting shit. Ragnarok is not the end of the world, it is a cycle that repeats, essentially resetting the world.
At Ragnarok, Fenrir and the allfather Odin duel and defeat eachother, which marks the destruction and recreation of existence.
Dying as a warrior in battle, with honor, meant that you were chosen by the valkyries to be carried to Valhalla, so you can rejoin your shieldbrothers and maidens, to fight and sit with Odin and maed. It is nothing like a religious Jihad. Personally, I don't think of the Old Norse being essentially religious people (as we know religion today). They were a lot more connected with their surroundings and nature.
Alas, they were not into documenting their own history through written text, but through tradition, stories and songs. Therefore, whatever we know, is composed through translations and written history of the British, who were ravaged by old Norse raids and occupations. Ironically (and sadly, if I may say so), this brought their culture in contact with Christianity and after they were driven out of England, Christianity and a more "modern" style of living slowly ate up whatever was left of the old Nordic culture.
    That is my limited understanding.

The female singing, the beginning part that was sad, is actually a recitation of a funerary inscription from a runestone from the 7th Century. There is no actual accurate translation because the inscription is worn away. One translation fo what they're singing, which is a phonetic reading of the 2nd of 3 panels of the stone:
"Hither stone the man stained with corpse-sea, made thus oarpins in the bearing-worn boat
Whom as came harrier-god here to goð 's land?
Fishlike, out of river-fear swimming, as bird, our of f(?) crowing"
In its entirety, the Rune is believed to be about a person who was treacherously killed. It is generally agreed that it is written in stylized poetry and in a partly metrical form containing a protection for the grave and the description of a funerary rite

  • @yhossarian
    @yhossarian 5 років тому +45

What I think is interesting about the song is the inversion you guys like to talk about: The actual aggressive part of this song is the female singer's part, which is beautiful and emotive. And the aggressive sounding part is really the "come on, man, lets all just chill" part. And, while there is the eventual acquiescence to the idea that violence is going to be inevitable (befitting the coarseness of the vocals), it's an interesting element you wouldnt get without finding a translation of the runic lyrics. This whole live album is incredible.

It's refreshing to see Christians react to something so non-Christian in such an honest way. You both tried to see it without bias and understand it on an emotional, cultural, and spiritual level. The Christian lens is still there, but it's very clear you're making the effort to look beyond it, and not get caught up with that stereotypical "it's heathen and ungodly!" response. Heilung is sort of an attempt at proto-Germanic music and concepts; culture that predates the Viking Age, and is even less documented. Attempts at recreating something like this involves a lot of speculation and gap filling, but they still do it well. You can sort of feel that respect and reverence in their performance, and you both respond to that. We all have those tribal roots, and music like this resonates with those roots.

ManuelB1b3r not Native American actually. As someone with both Nordic and Native American ancestry and has heavily researched both sides of my family tree I can say that for sure.
Heilung based their band and songs off of the pre Germanic culture before they were invaded and forced into Christianity.
This time period has a LOT of similarities to Native American culture.
The traditional language of the pre Germanic Era is what they’re speaking and the face paint and garb is as well. It comes heavily from Mongolian influences as well....
I thought the same thing when I first found them as well until I researched it a bit more.
It’s so beautiful how similar these cultures were and also how devastating it is that they were both completely eradicated by genocide and forced conversion into Christianity.
We live in a time where it is very important to hold compassion in our hearts and look at the similarities and not the differences...

I see some are putting here Wardruna and Heilung on a similar stage, as for their music style or epics. In my eyes, Wardruna seems to create a more majestic atmosphere in all what they do... Their albums breathe an elegant and classy dignity when evoking the Norse ancestors theme, no matter what the musical solution of every track would be. Really wonderful and touching, almost mystic musical projects.
Whereas Heilung is issued from a totally new experimental approach, with a very sophisticated antique Viking tag designed on a high conceptual level comprising history, linguistics, ancient folklore studies, ethnic art and culture. Under a "primitive" look and sound a super-elaborated project is hiding. Their savage accoustics is built up on extreme attention to the sound architecture - textures, structures and tonalities, with extraordinary output effects The sound expression (all type - word, voice, percussion, instrument) and dynamics of the rhythm in Heilung music are absolutely fabulous, never heard before, with deep both spiritual and visceral insight that awakes to life the DNA of human ancestral memory. The DNA of the human primordial, powerful sense of being. That's why so many here on YT, from so many different cultures and countries, are expressing identical feelings of energy and release when listening to Heilung. It's all about Therapy. Heilung is simply therapeutical, just as its name is reflecting (Heilung in german=healing).
Do listen to the Full Heilung Lifa show, to get the real touch from it all.
    Exceptional!

there is also finns in alaska, US wanted to use us as buffer against russia in case they would invade from there. they lied to finns about alaska being dream land, it was a hellhole, ground completely useless to farm anything, time after time harvest failed, they had a contract with US that they would be forced to work a said amount of years (I think it was ten or more) before they could move or really be free at all. so after we were slaved by them, some of us instantly took a trip back home while some others who were simply too tired tried to move away from alaska, but as if that would have gone anywhere when there is canada in between and its not like finns were welcome there.

Sori - We want the "kinship and campfire" you speak of, however the christians built their churches on our sacred grounds, moved their holidays to coincide with ours and have tried to stamp us out for 1000+ years.
We're slowly reclaiming our Teutonic heritage and we are not converting people...they are searching and finding their heritage, what is truly deep in their hearts casting off the ill fitting jedean mountain cult's idolatry.
It sounds mournful because it is a millenia of lost culture and pain. There is also a deep seated anger, you will find black metal and pagan music closely linked, often sharing musicians.
You commented on the woman looking like a queen, ironically pagan women had equal rights, just like a man...they were equals until the christians brought their inequality.
I do find it interesting that you two are listening to these aforementioned styles of music, you are, in essence, helping people find the path away from christianity, for that, I thank you.

Virgin women were practically treated like goddesses and adulterous women were shaved, stripped naked and beaten through the village by her husband so everyone knew she was a whore.
They were just a patriarchal as Christianity, if not more so. The respected women more if they were virgins or mothers, anything in between was either neutral or disrespected.
      Read Germania by Tacitus.
But yes, we are reconnecting to our past and we're tired of being told we have no culture and we're not allowed to be proud to be German, Scandinavian, Celtic, Anglo, Slavic... etc. Meaning we aren't allowed to be proud we're white.

Raaplexis you DO know, that Tacitus was Roman, right? He was part of the nation, that invaded those countries. I realize, that there isn't a lot of information of those ancient Germanic tribes. In fact, quite a bit of what we believe to know about them IS from Tacitus. BUT, you have to keep in mind, that he was Roman. So, of course, he would try to make them look uncivilized and barbaric, because they often were. And yes, women who screwed every living man in their tribe probably were treated badly, but you always have to take things written by Tacitus with a lot of salt. He didn't understand their culture, because he wasn'T part of it. He just observed and tried to look at it from his Roman perspective. In general, women were "worth" a lot more in these Germanic tribes. I mean, just think about the female godesses they had, be it Norse or Celtic. Morrigan - goddess of death for the Celts, Freya - goddess of love and marriage, Frigg - goddess of the Hearth and motherhood. Those were all very important parts of life back then and they were attributed to female gods. There is story about Morrigan, where her doings lead to the death of a strong, famous male warrior, who treated her badly. Women were a very important part of society for these people.
TL;DR: Tacitus being your main source of information is kind of meh, because he himself was Roman.
To VIVISECTVID86: 1000% agree. Nothing more to really add. Hail to the gods!

Most so-called Christians aren’t Christ like at all. Number 1 thing they do wrong is celebrate Christmas and Easter, both of which are pagan holidays. The problem with most organized religions is is they have become a business and do not practice at all what they preach. I’m not a practicing Christina but I do believe in the Christian God and his Son. I believe that I am a flawed human being and that I am in no position to judge anyone and that I should treat everyone the way I want to be treated. I don’t look down on people because of what they believe or for anything they do for that matter because I’m not better than anyone. Christianity shares its roots with numerous other religions, so it wouldn't be accurate to call it just christian roots. But in the ancient times when roman people nailed jewish people onto crosses and worshipped planets, here up north there actually were people poking each other with sticks and worshipping whatever they feared at the moment. Nobody was there to tell them about christian roots, therefore amongst nothern folks pagan beliefs were long before any of that christian stuff -- or anything related to its roots. We were not that organized and this happened more locally.

The band is from Denmark, not Norway, though they have Danish, Norwegian, and German members. Denmark also does have a similar culture to Norway of course, both being Scandinavian countries and they were once arguably one kingdom from the 1500's until early 1800's I believe. The name Heilung is actually German, for "Healing." Krigsgaldr means War Magic, Krig being "War" in Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish, (and Krieg in German, which is practically the same word) I guess Galdr is magic in Old Norse, I personally haven't encountered the word in Norwegian. The lyrics (non-english ones) to this song are in Old Norse, not Norwegian. Of course Norwegian comes from it but it is a separate language. It'd be a similar equivalent to Old English or Old Church Slavonic for example (speaking of which, I hope you'll listen to Batushka soon)

Krig = War, Galdr = Spell or incantation. I think the more accurate translation would be "war ritual". Galdr is a form of magic. Seidh is also at type of magic from the Norse. Galdr deals more in sound and forms and ritual. The use of runic staves and inscriptions fall into the Galdr type.
Seidh is generally described as "feminine magic".

I did not talk about history or mythology, I was talking about the music and the theme. Central Europe I meant greater Germany and part of western and eastern Europe, The tribes who settled in these parts as Alemanni, Suebi, Burgundians, Juthungi, Segni, Ubii and many more.

The part Maria sings here is from the Eggja stone found in... Norway. Pretty much every Germanic tribe you can think of migrated from Scandinavia during climatic changes that started about a hundred years before Christ and culiminated in the Migration Period where a flood of people descended from the north to fill the vacuum of the now fallen Roman Empire(Where the goths, from Gotland in Sweden, played a role).
Beowulf takes place in Sweden but is today considered the British national epic, Rome was ruled for 200 years by people originally from Denmark, the Lombards. Ukraine and Russia had the Kievan Kahagnate and later the Varangians, from western Norway. Theres a county in Norway called Varanger to this day. The Viking age was the second or possibly even third such wave of expansion from the Nordic countries.

Today’s society viewed the old Norse as terrible, marauding, raping, pillaging heathens which couldn’t be further from the truth. They were explorers, innovators, cunning and smart. They traded with almost everyone they came across, including the Native Americans, Middle-Easterners, parts of Asia etc. (and yes, if they didn’t want to trade with the Norseman then they would just take what they wanted).
The Brits were perplexed due to the cleanliness of them because they bathed once a weak, combing and styling their hair and beards. Brits were lucky to bath once a month!

Norwegian here, regarding your question of the peaceful farmer vs warrior culture. During the bronze age Europe was warmer, and Scandinavia too. Coinciding with the peak of the roman empire Scandinavia suffered climatic changes, turning colder(eventually leading to three full years of no summer in the 6'th century, which became the Migration Era as people moved to find food and fertile land, also google wiki "Fimbulwinter" to see how this entered norse religion).
Therefore a rather large population could be supported through farming. When the ancient greek explorer Pytheas visited Norway 400 years before Christ he wrote: "The people live on millet and other herbs, and on fruits and roots; and where there are grain and honey, the people get their beverage, also, from them. " Millet can't grow in Norway today, it requires a far warmer climate. He also makes no remark about war or conflict amongst the nordics.
As things grew cold, and hunger and wars over resources spread people started fleeing south, clashing with countless other tribes in northern and central Europe, and encountering the Roman Empire(and eventually sacking and burning Rome itself).
They were driven by, as the rune Naudiz explains:
    Nauðr gerer næppa koste;
    nøktan kælr í froste.
    "Constraint gives scant choice;
a naked man is chilled by the frost."
So, here lies the birth of the warrior culture. From a peaceful peninsula far from the wars of the mediterranean cultures, bursting with food and natural resources in one generation, to cold, hunger and war in the next. Migrations south became cyclical, happening every few hundred years following climate variations, where whole tribes of tens of thousands of people left Scandinavia and went into Europe to carve out a land for their own. The Ostro and Westro-Goths, Vandals, Saxons, Lombardi, Rus, The Kievan Kahagnate, Varangians, all came from Scandinavia, mostly Sweden and Denmark. Whenever you see Germanic tribe in literature read it as "Scandinavian tribe that went south into Europe". But Europe was of course already populated, and war followed.
War became huge in the Germanic/Nordic/Norse mythology and culture as a result.

I think Kvenland existed back in the time he visited northern europe, so I would assume there is no infighting when everyone is ruled by one king, they were also considered giants but I suppose it used to have different meaning than just enormous man, might have been a man of greatness or something to be revered and feared as well. later becoming a myth of giants as we know them today. thats pretty much how it went in finland, so called Sons of Äijö, they were men who were taught of as giants and then they became myths of enormous men.

"Certain groups can be proud of their heritage and certain groups can't", is pretty accurate.
The reason for it, is slavery, the east indian company, etc.But Heilung sings of era's way before that. In my opinion, Heilung attepts to show, and tries to make us appreciate the history of man, not just Germanic man. Heilung tries to remove barriers, because it taps into something ancient in all of us. A connection with nature. An appreciation for nature. For all it's deer. It's boar. it's fish. It's herbs, mushrooms and fruit. If our very ancient forefathers weren't able to make it, then you and I wouldn't have been writing all this bullshit :)

Since Castlefest, I been listening to Heilung's entire set everyday. It IS very emotional to listen to because the lyrics are very poetic and sacred. A thousand times watched and I think I never realized there was a laptop on stage. It's the flip side to Wardruna which is equally emotional and sacred within all roots of culture that coexisted within a tribe. That's what WE miss that is instilled in us through blood ancestors. That's why we are emotional about it.

I'm glad you two watched and reacted to Heilung, they are one of my favorite groups. I love your feedback of them. I am proud of my Norweigan/Scandinavan/Norseman heritage, so much so I have embraced my ancestor's faith in the old orginial Gods and Goddesses and I think everyone should be proud and take pride in their heritage and culture. I thank you for your reaction. I recommend you two react to a band similar to Heilung, they are called Skald, I also love them and I think you will enjoy them
Skald is old Norse for POET

First video from this channel I have ever watched. Vin, I appreciate your view on this beyond anything you could imagine. You didn't assume any "racism" and that means everything to me in a world that is increasingly going mad. Stating that EVERYONE should be proud of their heritage is nothing less than pure truth. Your ability to appreciate the roots of this culture touches my heart. PS... the parallel between the lyrics and the part in Revelations that mentions the sword that comes forth from Jesus' mouth... man, you blew my mind! Thanks dude.

I think you guys would gain a lot of understanding of northern pagan cultures by 1.) Pick up a copy of any collection of Norse mythology and 2.) Understand that the pagan worldview is circular: a perpetual cycle of life, death and rebirth. Ragnarok is not the end of all, and the after life is not exactly a permanent state for everyone, but rather an ending that ushers in a new cosmic beginning. One telling says that a few select gods survive and brings new mortals....to a garden. The Abrahamic view of existence is much more linear. Lines don't exist in nature, so our ancestors, who often believed that the divine manifests itself fully in nature, didn't view things in a linear way when you go far enough back in our history. May that help in further understanding meopagan/pagan sentiments in black metal and folk metal adjacent song reactions.

I think if you studied traditional Christian beliefs rather than the new, watered-down version of Christianity, you will find that Christianity is circular to some degree, as well. God created the entire Cosmos in perfect unity with Him, but mankind used his freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, and that union was destroyed. God, in His mercy, sent His Son to redeem mankind and thereby bring the Cosmos back to the Garden of Eden. The difference is that, instead of the cycle endlessly repeating, there is a beginning, a middle, and an end to the story. However, the story does end with "And they all lived happily ever after." The afterlife is a life, but it is the perfected version of this one.

In old Finnish tradition souls circulated. When baby was born and time to give a name arrived, old ancestors names were said until the baby seemed to calm down or smile during some name. That meant that the soul of that particular ancestor had set to the body, and thus that name was given. The souls lived in the underworld called Tuonela. If a person experienced a trauma, the person's soul could escape the body back to Tuonela and the person would get depressed and lose will to live. It was a job of a shaman to go to the underworld and persuade the soul to return to the body.

This song was about the spread of Christianity at the edge of a sword to covert the Norse and Germanic peoples!! The gruff male voices are a form of magical chatting know as "Galdr" roughly meaning "to crow". In the Norse and Germanic cultures, sounds of word possessed magical power, and chats were written in kennings, a compound expression in Old English and Old Norse poetry with metaphorical meanings!! In the title of the song, the word "Galdr" is present, "Krigsgaldr".

    • @LeeRaldar
      @LeeRaldar 5 років тому +4

So is the Krig in Krigsgaldr an earlier version of the German word 'krieg' which would give the full word a similar meaning to war-chant.

    • @magnus2544
      @magnus2544 5 років тому +2

@@LeeRaldarIt's from Middle Low German "krigen".
But the full word wouldn't be quite "war-chant", it would be closer to "magical song of war", or "spell of war". A Galdr was initially a song of magic, but was later used for magic in general. At least I think so? Not hugely familiar with it, but I am Norwegian, and have heard a fair bit about Norse/Germanic mythology growing up.

It could also be interpreted as "war warding". A galdr isn't necessarily something to be said to affect a change in the world but also as protection against external forces.

I’d be happy to have someone like you to talk to about philosophy, I’ve only had two friends that could philosophize with me and one was a Christian that moved away and the other was an Atheist who passed away last year due to cancer.
