How To Use A Massage Gun For Runner's Knee/IT Band Syndrome | Physical Therapist Teaches

- Massage guns are all the rage in the DIY/at-home health and healing community. In the last year, we've seen tons of companies develop their own versions of the massage gun. But with their growing popularity, most people still don't completely understand why these percussive instruments even work. Using your massage gun mindfully is having an understanding of what muscles need to be RELEASED and which need to be SIMULATED or ACTIVATED. Using it in the proper direction for the proper muscle is key to seeing a long-term improvement (and not just a short-term relief). Discover the two general rules for using a massage gun and, more specifically, my favorite way to use it on IT Band Syndrome and RUNNER'S KNEE!

Thanks Dr Lin. This is all I knee-d 😊👍👍
Lol
Thanks so much for these videos. They are super helpful! One thing that would aid my learning would be if you could provide a still diagram of the direction to go for each muscle so I can use it for reference as I try it myself. Thanks for considering that! If you do already have them elsewhere, can you point me in the direction? Thank you again!
when using massage gun are you applying pressure to the it band? and when should we use it ( before workout or after as a warmup)
Thank you for sharing.
Could you please tell us which massage gun you are using in this video ? There are so many of them and we are kind of lost.
Thank you
Instant relief - thanks!!!!
You love to see it! So happy to hear :)
Very helpful, thank you. Does using the gun only hurt because the muscles are tight?
Thank you so much, I pulled my IT band in Indoor track and ever since it bothers me to run on it but I hope this simple massage helps a lot!
Did you achieve any results with this?
Wow, bro I just bought a massage gun and I have bad runners knee. The soleus work did the trick, it really reduced the pain.
Do you have patella femoral? Is it reduced?
@@mithunkumar-hs6ni I have meniscus pain and yes it’s reduced by using the gun after workouts and stretching
@@elias8294 thankyou
i did an intense sesh on my vastus lateralis and literally the next day my knee popping disappeared. Almost entirely. after it crackling my ENTIRE LIFE getting worse til a workout injury a year ago, when it began to badly pop on every stair and squat down. now it feels amazing and loose. as if for 22 years my quads just needed a damn massage to get the knots out. I can't even believe it really happened but I wanted to share my experience
Can i use this strategy for ligament injury
Does the massage gun help with tennis elbow too?
Runner's knee means Chondromalaciapatella? For chondromalaciapatella...shall i use the way you did?
Is this also useful for tight knee ligaments that cause creaking? This does reduce the creaking but doesn’t make it go away, so I’m wondering if a different pair of inhibition/facilitation should be tried. Thanks!
Hi Kalpa! We actually just finished a video for Knee grinding/popping! It sounds like it would be perfect for you! It is scheduled to be released January 14th. We suggest you subscribe and turn on our channel notifications so that you get a reminder when it is released!
@@RehabRevive super!
I've injured my inner side of my knee, so when I pivot or side step off it I feel it. Had a scan and nothing is broken and I can walk fine it's just those movements. Would you recommend I shorten that area with a massage gun ( from bottom to top) from my calves to my thighs?
Sounds more like a ligament strain. Massage it while doing lots of varied movement should help.
I've self diagnosed myself with it band syndrome. I wouldn't call it pain but I have burning in my lateral knee pretty much where the it band connects. It only happens when I have my knee in certain positions. Do you think this is it band syndrome or could it be nerve related? I did have meniscus surgery about 10 years ago and this has only been happening for about 3 weeks
Thank you so much, finally after so much run around I know that what I have is the ITB Syndrome! I will try your massage gun technique! Does this issue also effect the ankle??
For anyone reading this with a similar problem. My leg is completely healed now! I used the same technique in the video and used Magnesium spray (sprayable magnesium supplement) to relax and feed the muscle. Two days and I’m healed and functioning like normal again!
Yay so happy it helped!!
Please supply price for massaging gun
Please check the links below sometimes they run promos and of course we have the $25 promo code. Usually it ranges from $199 to $249
Hi! I've been a runner for 10+ years with knie pain in the last two years. I've started using a massage gun recently and what I experienced was that it made my calves really really tight, like I could even walk on the next two days. I've haven't had this problem elsewhere, only in my calves, regardless if I've run before it or not. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
Why does direction matter? Is there research to back this up? I see a lot of other tutorials instructing to run the gun back and forth.
Just give it try. Wouldnt hurt right? We are using it clinically and innovating all the time to get things done better faster with longer last change.
Or do a bunch of the same and get the same results

Is that a soft or hard head?
The round bulb looking head is a soft head, the rest of them are hard heads!
