Our benchmarks today look at the best processors for gaming, Adobe Premiere (video editing), Blender/3D art, and more. We talk about the Intel i9-9900KS vs. 9900K differences and whether it's "worth it," part of which requires a refresher on MCE and what "5GHz" means to various motherboard manufacturers. For future search phrases, we'll note that anyone wondering why their Intel i9-9900KS isn't 5GHz can find the answer in this video -- it's probably because turbo duration limits are being followed. Enabling MCE would "fix" this, sort of, but at costs discussed in the video.

@Gamers nexus -- Worth pointing out that your EPS Power reading is not CPU power only but also includes the power lost across the VRM which is typically around 10-20W. So on the ASUS board where you read 126W, the cpu itself was actually only using 106W-116W, which is even less than Intel’s PL1 spec. And if by "Out of the box performance" you are going to mean “no BIOS fiddling whatsoever” then you should be testing with the XMP profile disabled as you need to get into the bios in order to enable it. See the problem? And for ASUS boards the moment you go to enable the XMP profile, it is going to prompt you to “load optimised defaults” which remove the power limits.
Also, it should be pointed out that no-power-limits and MCE and are not the same thing and are not viewed as the same thing by Intel. No-power-limits sticks to stock turbo frequency tables (for example the regular 9900K still only boosts to the stock all-core turbo of 4.7 GHZ but instead for only 28 seconds it does so indefinitely). MCE, on the other hand, means both no-power-limits *AND* to make the all-core turbo boost equal to the single-core turbo boost (for example for the regular 9900K with MCE enabled it means boosting to 5GHZ instead of 4.7GHz on all cores indefinitely). For warranty purposes MCE is considered an overclock by Intel. No-power-limits is NOT considered an overclock by Intel. It is stock and it is left to the motherboard vendor how the settings are configured "out of the box".
Personally I don't want to see desktop cpu reviews with power limits. If you want to include power-limited results that should be *in addition* to the non-power-limited ones and not the only ones shown.

Hi, will you do any Ram Speed testing with the KS? I read that wether or not I'd be able to achieve 4133MHz Ram with the 9900k depends on how it's binned etc. - and with the KS, I assume that means that it should be easier to achieve a stable 4133MHz Ram-speed? But then again motherboard support might not be amazing for the KS yet when it comes to XMP profiles etc.?

this is the third (or is it fourth?) incarnation of roughly the same CPU. while it is important to make sure, i highly doubt anyone expected different results=) it's a good CPU, it's slightly better in single thread, still not a big enough difference if you actually need any SMT to choose it over 3900X=) But yes it is the fastest gaming CPU still^^ Intel beat Intel! woohoo :P

and HOW will it make people keep spending as the ONLY people who will buy it are the people who want a new CPU but one that is THE BEST gaming CPU as all Intel have done is released a product better than their previous best in the specific tasks it is good at which is mainly gaming and high IPC and clock speed workloads which do not require lots of cores
ALSO out of the group of people who want a new gaming CPU only those who have a CPU that is older or less powerful than the 9900K will consider this as a couple FPS in games or a few seconds saved in productivity tasks is not worth a whole new CPU. People who have the 9900K will most likely only get a new CPU for gaming if it is a whole new gaming CPU instead of a binned version of their current one as a totally new CPU would be higher clocks and IPC and maybe even cores at the same power consumption or a similarly performing CPU with a lower power consumption not lets bin our CPU's and increase the power consumption to make them seem faster because they can handle more power and are still as powerful as our previous best
at least now 750W+ power supply manufacturers will get more business...

I went with the 3900x.. I do a decent amount of rendering at 1440p and my G-sync monitors' refresh rates cap at 100hz anyways.. so I'm pleased with locking in 100fps in every game I play.

Steve really is a fan of the r5 3600, wich is probably one of the best all arounders of all time (i5 2500k?)
Honestly most people are it's just good enough for just about everything.
I have to agree. Been working on some budget builds for friends who also want to do a bit of gaming, and the 3600 is a great bang for the buck. Plus you can always overclock it to be a 3600X.

Due note, the KS does have silicon mitigations for Meltdown, and some variants of Spectre and MDS. This removes the need for performance degrading software mitigations.
Blender renders is exactly my use case, so these benchmarks are gold to me :) I used to offload them to gpus but 2.8 has mixed rendering so cpu choice matters again

I think you should include tuned memory with your OC scores because you get sick amount of gains with dram calculator timings with Ryzen. I gained like 30-50 fps in multiplayer BFV.

Why are we still using ddr4 3200? Your Ryzen ddr4 3733mhz testing shows that it gives a pretty big boost to performance and 3600mhz ram has come down hugely in price now and can commonly be purchased for under $100 for 16GB, sometimes significantly less when on sale.
Hi Steve and everyone at team GN, now that Blender has had a massive, and very important, update, will you start benchmarking with the new update soon ?? Do you have to benchmark all CPUs again (or at least the most important ones) ??
Also, as you grow and with more CPU releases (now with AMD properly competing) do you think retesting updated software (mainly productivity apps) with that many CPU skus is sustainable or will you gradually drop some of the older ones and build the new graphs from there (with new and upcoming CPUs) ??
Retesting with that many CPUs take a long time and as you incorporate more productivity Apps to your benchmarking suite, software updates will be a recurrent theme.
Anyway, keep up the good work mates
So part of benchmarking is having a consistent test. They'd have to wait for another version to come out to move up and then rebuild their two Blender tests. They might revise their productivity suite with the Zen 3 chips, but they also just revised it, so it'd invalidate all of the numbers they already have.

Who remembers when AMD did the "it hits 5ghz guys!!!" With the fx9590 and it was seen as a desperation move?
Because you get the performance with this Cpu. The FX series 5.0ghz got really hot and gave you no performance advantage. With the i9 9900k you get a hot cpu but you get some really good performance

@Martin M lmao they can barely squeeze 2% performance gains out of 14nm now. The 9900KS is not amazing. Shit is more expensive than the 9900K, runs hotter, and is BARELY better performance-wise. They're doing everything they possibly can to squeeze performance out of an old ass architecture and calling it new because they're desperate and have nothing better to offer. If you're a fan of Intel, just stick with the 9900K and ignore this desperate attempt at staying relevant.
Thank you for those frequency and power charts for PL2 abide vs. ignore. I don't think I've actually seen results for power draw when the only change is for tau= infinity. What kind of cooler would you need for that case? Also, I've heard different claims about whether MCE-like enhancements work with locked chips. It seems like PL2 ignore could be an easy way to get a little more performance out of a locked chip. Would it be possible to test it with your i5 8400, and test results and cooling requirements. Again, thank you for your effort.

Thank god for tech Jesus. Answering the real questions. I read the techspot/hardware unboxed review first and it was absolutely useless. Aside from the clock speed difference the biggest difference is that it's binned yet in that review there was absolutely no mention of vcore and temps. I wanna see what this thing can do when undervolted.

Comparing the 9900K and the 9900KS on Intel's website suggests that some instruction sets have been gimped on the KS. I would probably never use things like TXT, SIPP and vPro but why would they want to turn these things off?

oh no, there's on old xfx amd card in the background that takes up 0.1% of the total screen space. this is clearly shilling for amds parts to try to take away from intels impact on their launch video.
Underwhelming for sure, especially for people who actually do the overclocking themselves. But people are honestly a little too amd fanboys at the moment, hell even i've praised amd and currently own r5 3600 but they completely ignore how good the cpu is, especially in gaming. It is obviously not "new" product, so you cant expect revolutionary gains, that doesnt mean the 9900ks is bad.
Purely for gaming, i'd take that over any AMD CPU any day.
Its always about the price, there are no bad products, only bad prices (except bulldozer maybe). But there are however pointless products (for the consumer), which the 9900ks is.

@@ZazzilasArden not every game is optimized enough for 240 fps, even on a 2080Ti, you know and compared to 9900K, 3700X runs games 11% slower, 3600 18% slower and the only Zen 2 based cpu that is the closest, is currently more expensive than EVEN 9900KS. Even cheaper I7-9700K is faster for gaming. Intel's hardware is simply better, for gaming that is.
@@budgetbajur If the games aren't optimized enough to run at 240fps then they aren't going to be running at 240fps no matter the hardware. The next step down is 144Hz which both AMD and Intel can EASILY achieve with a 2080 Ti. So once again, why pay more for Intel?

Remember the days of getting a full Gig out of overclocking a 2600K? Now we're supposed to get excited about sub-gig overclocks :( Sometimes I miss the old days.
Steve, why usually in most reviews there is no talk about the smoothness that brings to use as many cores as you can have in the everyday use of a PC? (same with RAM, BTW taking aside the cost of the CPU, clearly the 3600 is by far the better all around CPU today, ).I'm a graphic designer and from time to time I also record my guitar, I used to have a 12 cores Xeon in a X99 board and now a 3900x...the twelve cores makes me to mostly not have even the slightest worry about how many windows I've opened, or how many programs I've opened, or how it handles any plugin with a DAW...I have the sensation that even I can handle better fonts in Illustrator, Corel, etc..it's true that some benchamrks will preffer more cores, others higher frequencies and that like in RAM with a certain base, you can run more than good many aplications...but I clearly feel the difference in everyday use between my old 12 cores low freq XEON and my new 3900x in comparison with the 8700K that I had between both...the latter obviusly a great CPU. I think that could be cool to test scenarios like I'm talking about, even if I know that I'm not a typical gamer user and that I'm lazy leaving everything open (programs, google tabs, etc) but I certainly have the feeling that everything goes smoother with many cores.

Hi Steve. Great video and as always thank you for the information you provide. However I was wondering about the temperature at 5.2GHz, you said 99degrees C. Isn’t this a bit too much especially on long time usage in games or such?

This launch is clearly Intel just trying to get rid of their defective CPU's as having a single chip is significantly more expensive than what AMD has been doing which Intel called gluing a bunch of CPU's together BUT this method is better for higher overclocking potential as when you glue chips together each chip has to be a really good overclocking chip and each chip has to have as little to no defect at all for it to overclock really good and on top of that all the connections between each chip need to be good as well

You got it completely the other way around actually. Chiplets allow for easier frequency binning.
In a classic monolithic die CPU you gotta get the whole die to be top quality silicon if you want a good overclocker. With chiplets, you'll get let's say 10% of chiplets that'll do 4.5ghz on a wafer at X voltage, 20% will do 4.4, 30% will do 4.3 and the bottom of the barrel will do 4.2~4.1 (Im just making numbers up for an example), now you can take all the top end binned silicon and pack them together to get high end chips, while using the lower end for cheaper parts. You can of course also use the 6 core chiplets together for 12c parts, or 3x 4 core ones, etc etc.
Possibilities are huge with them.

It would be interesting if you guys could ballpark a FPS where a given CPU becomes the limiting factor. I know it varies quite a bit, maybe too much so, but every CPU on the chart would likely look identical if paired with say a 1030. I have a 1920x at home for my research but it would be nice to know when a GPU upgrade for my on the side gaming is a non-trivial value loss.
I think another less common but important usecase is with virtualization; i.e. VMware, Virtualbox, or HyperV. This cuts across many different but similar industries/fields and I am loving the new Zen 2 not just for the core cornucopia but the memory bandwidth and optimizations. I guess this usecase isn't covered as much but I think is a good usecase to use in regards to CPU's, MB's, RAM, drive performance. Then again maybe another performance metric isn't really wanted? Heh how many more hours would that add to content?

@@NoneRain_ Honestly, i'm a little concerned about the longevity of the 7NM processors. at that scale, its easy to imagine how delicate it may become over prolonged use. Human hair is 50,000-100,000 NM wide if that gives you context to how small 7NM is.
It's actually the opposite.
Smaller transistors are more power efficient, they do more producing less heat.
When you force the micro-components at higher temperatures, it become a problem in a long term usage. That's why they need be more power efficient, and therefore smaller, to be better without "paying the price" for "old" lithography process like the 14nm. Intel right now is using high quality materials so their product can reach better performance and endure TDP at 14nm+++. A workaround while they can't produce 10nm or 7nm.
Examples of 7nm microprocessors: Apple A12, A12X, A13, Huawei 980, and the Snapdragon 855.
Something to remember, is that "7nm" is the commercial name for a tech where some components are made with that lithography, it doesn't speak for all transistors geometry or its geometry at all.
The size of Human hair has nothing to do with lithography processes...
You should be concerned about using low energy efficiency products instead....

Have you tried to undervolt it? Like, put in on stock 9900K non-s clocks and as it is binned it should be able to work stable with way lower voltages and therefore then consume way less power. Seems like an interesting comparison to me - 9900k vs 9900ks at same clocks, measuring the wattage they take.
I've been hearing that R0 stepping silicon is better in general than the older P0 of the 9900k... I do wonder whether the difference in power draw between the k and the KS you saw was largely just because of P0 Vs R0...

And only if you are still 1080p - haven't done that for 5 years, myself. At 4K - no real difference for games. 9900KS is a super chip for low-res.

Very grateful for your honesty on which CPU manufacturer to go with as far as use case. I have certain reviewers I watch that have really disappointed me because all they want to do is push AMD R3. The problem with that is some ppl don't use premiere, blender or any of these production apps and they simply just want the best gaming chip for their use case. Imo, Intel = Gaming while Amd = Production w/ Gaming, take your pick as they are both good at what they can do.
have you ever consider testing the limitations of the CPU lower and efficiency say at a clock speed of 1 gigahertz set by the power limit on windows to see which CPU idle on windows power saving mode draws a lease amount of power whenever you don't need all 18 Coors and all 5 gigahertz
