      So when's the NV-LINK test?

    • @Quetzalcoatl0
      @Quetzalcoatl0 6 років тому

      Can we say that right now we can test only 60% of the 2080 and 2080ti ? We can't test the ~400+ tensor cores that are gonna be used for AI AA, and we can't test "RTX ON" performance against the 10 series too. So the cards seem extremely expensive when only 2/3 of the cores/features are used. Also GDDR6 bumps the price even more, like any other new DDR/GDDR comes out.

      Yeah. I don't think the pricing is going to hold up long unless they drop a driver update that increases the cost to performance ratio.

      @@DD-sw1dd I have a 1080 ti. Every frame counts in VR hence I've sold mine and have a 2080ti on the way. Ok it's not a huge jump but I got good enough coin from my 1080ti that the 2080ti cost me about the same. (Obviously I have lost money but that's the nature of tech) with VR and particularly the next set of headsets coming such as pimax 8k 5k+ etc... Keep in mind that right now no one can test the full potential of the card.
      So here you see only ~60% of the full performance when you enabled the features

      Brother Ares the 2080ti is an enthusiast card. Enthusiasts don’t give a shit about performance value they care about bleeding edge tech and the highest performance possible, fuck the cost. If you aren’t playing on a 4K 144hz monitor, this card wasn’t meant for you. For those that do. It’s better than a titan V. Also, I know plenty of gamers who own 3 monitors or the x27, including myself. Gamers only spend 350 on a gpu? Hah. I guess most gamers who are still in school maybe. Nvidia and Intel make high performance products for a niche market, just because YOU aren’t the target doesn’t mean that market doesn’t exist.

    • @illuvattula5017
      @illuvattula5017 6 років тому

      Let's say that with a 1080 Ti you game at 4k 60fps. Let's also say, that in a years time the drivers improve to the point that you consistently get 35% more performance from 2080 Ti compared to 1080 Ti. And because we're already saying so much stuff, let's on top of that say that once DLSS gets up and running it will give you additional 40% performance for perceivably the same resolution.
      Overall that would give you a 1.35 x 1.40 = 1,89 times the performance. If all of this admittedly wishful thinking were to come true you would be awfully close to 2x improvement and with some graphical options tweaking be able to play at (faux) 4k 120 fps. Not bad. One can dream.

      V. P. More fps of course. A 1080Ti falls a fair amount short of 1440p 144Hz in most games, often in the 80-110 fps range, and can sometimes struggle to do 4K 60fps. Let alone try to power the new 4K 144Hz monitors. We need something more powerful.

    • @ags911
      @ags911 6 років тому

      You could just overclock and turn some settings down, ultra settings usually give diminishing returns. Remember those 144Hz monitors are for competitive gamers who turn down all the settings for better visibility and frame rates anyway. 4K 60 though could make a bit more sense where frame rate drops under 60 would be really noticeable but I don't know how good G-Sync is with that stuff. The 1080Ti is still a beast and hits over 100 fps with most games and RTX isn't even a thing yet so the best thing would be to wait and see if you have a 1080Ti.

    • @Malus1531
      @Malus1531 6 років тому

      @@ags911 Overclocking doesn't do much with Pascal. Tried overclocking my 1080Ti the other day and it crashed at +70 core. Probably could do to lower settings more often, but I play single player 95% of the time and would rather have the eye candy. You're right though it's plenty strong, and 80-110 fps in enough more me. Would be nice to hit the 144fps cap though since I don't have Gsync.

      First crypto-mining and RAM prices convinced me that an Xbox X was a good purchase (it is, even if you just want to play Halo in 4K), and now RTX has convinced me that a new Samsung TV would be worthwhile. The 2018 QLED line added low latency interpolation to get a 4K120hz output off of 4K60, something that is still going to be impossible on PC for the foreseeable future. So if I want to look at a crisp native 4K image running 120fps, I actually need to get a TV.
      And Samsung is showing off AI upscaling with their new 8K TVs, hopefully that gets added to 4K QLED next year.

    • @budthecyborg4575
      @budthecyborg4575 6 років тому +2

      Not to mention Xbox has Freesync now.
      If AI Upscaling can be combined with 120hz interpolation, it is conceivably possible that Xbox+Samsung could even be competitive with DLSS.
      But hopefully AMD just comes out with a kick ass Navi GPU next year and I'll be running 4K120 natively on my PC "Fingers Crossed".

    Who else can spend over $1,000 on a single PC component?
    Nvidia could care less about the average gamer anymore. They just cater to miners and top end enthusiasts exclusively.

    See that little reflection flickering on that 2080Ti every time Steve touches the table? Realistically, that's about as much RTX as I'm expecting to see actually implemented in any game for another three generations. I'll stick with my 970 for now, thanks.

      To be absolutely honest, there are some compromises to be made. I mostly play on custom, like having my draw distance cranked up to the max, high texture quality if feasible, and everything else comes after that. My New Vegas is doing almost constant 100fps in 3440x1440 and that's what I care about. I find that even modern games don't quite use all the vram, strangely enough the only game I've ever had to max out this gpu's 3,5gb was the first Mass Effect with 4k textures mod. It's not the best card out there, it's starting to get old, but they've still not given me a reason to upgrade.

    I love the added details you're providing in this review, like which game engine is in use for each game and the sample gameplay for each title. Very slick!
    The charts look better than ever too, and I particularly like that you're displaying the test setup on each slide. Makes it way easier to get the full picture if viewed in isolation.
    Overall: crisp 4K video, better sound than we've been used to, good lighting, lovely cat. New office is working out for you, clearly. :)

    So... in conclusion, nvidia gives us marginal gains with a steep price increase, and then, they stop releasing new driver updates for the older 10 series, making the new 20 series really shine with future titles, thus forcing everyone into adopting the new hardware. That is providing we manage to sell a liver or two in order to pay for it, of course.
    Apple any one?
    It's good for your health, but very bad for your wallet.

  • @scotthanlon5742

    The gains are so minimal between generations. If Nvidia actually did what they have historically done and lowered the price to be more competitive than the last generation. If they put them out for the same or slightly lesser price than Pascal they would have had a much warmer reception. But no, greed and stupidity instead. The people who have bought already are sheep. 6-10 months from now and I'll be ROFL at them. Pricing will crash and then AMD will bring something to ensure the price crash and then Nvidia will announce 7nm and then give you the cards you wanted this time then . Lol. Cant wait to be proven right!!!

    Thanks again for another great review. One question though, ff the Turing architecture is very similar to Volta why isn't anyone doing a benchmark in relation to the Titan V? Doing a comparison on hardware specifications may put the pricing and performance into better context. Yes Turing (especially the founders edition which, unlike GTX FE cards, come factory overclocked by Nvidia based on their own website so not really "reference/base" cards" that the AIB partners will be selling), is more expensive than Pascal, but Turing is also stacked in much the same way as the Volta cards. So not sure people reducing things down to the price per frame is exactly an apples to apples comparison and takes away from the other stuff on the Turing cards not found on Pascal.
    Honestly believe, Turing is at the limit of what is practical and affordable at consumer grade because it is not just about the GPUs but the monitors they are pushing. Doubt many gamers can afford or are willing to shell out $2000 for a 4K 120hz monitor let alone 8K? Raw fps performance beyond the GTX1080ti is pointless for the vast majority of gamers so why were we expecting the RTX 2080 to be leaps and bounds ahead of the GTX 1080ti which was the first consumer grade 4K@60fps high to ultra graphics detail card? Nvidia's market consumer relations, and product differentiation is probably the main problem here along with gamers' expectations.

      It's sort of a upgraded pascal gpu on one side. Then your getting the tensor core gpu on the other.
      I don't know what people were expecting. This card in rendering benchmarks beat out the Titan V. At half the cost. That's why they are expensive. For that alone, it's a steal. For gaming your gonna feel ripped off a bit. Because it's only 20%-30% better. It's still an upgrade though . But that's up to the person. If you want new tech your gonna pay.

    • @romxxii
      @romxxii 6 років тому

      How the hell is it a pascal refresh?! Geez you people really want to hate even if the charts literally show a significant performance increase. What is this? AMD bots?!?!

    • @stealth2951
      @stealth2951 6 років тому +2

      @@romxxii, yeah, I don't get it. It's 20%-30% at the moment better than a 1080ti. I don't think they realize your getting that, plus the rtx and dlss with the tensor cores. I don't know why everyone was expecting a huge leap with implementing rtx. I think these people bashing it don't understand how big real time Ray tracing is. If they did 3d rendering, I think they would understand a bit better.
      They see the price for just normal gaming. And this tech is the start of changing how games will be made. Games could be easier on the hardware and run better, using this tech, but we will see. Only one driver so far. And devs haven't really dived into this new tech for games at all. I think it's a little premature to bash this gpu. All because it's not 35%-45% better than a 1080ti at the standard way of gaming.

    My theory the rtx 2080 should have been a rtx 2070 that is why the performance is very similar to a 1080 ti in most cases the gap between the rtx 2080 and 1080 ti should have been bigger. It would explain too why the rtx 2070 has no nvlink because it should have been a rtx 2060 midrange card but since I'm no engineer or computer scientist I guess I'm wrong but it made me think about this why performance is so similar with these two cards haha .

      Ray Tracing + DLSS is still an x-factor at the moment too. Plus improved drivers. But if you check BitWit's benchmarks they're getting 77% performance increase over the 1080 at 4k and 36% over a 1080Ti at 4k. I'm willing to gamble on DLSS. It's fine if others arn't though.

Until then, though, these cards seem to be a bit more of the same for a lot more of the $$. Nvidia used to price its GPUs based on relative performance increases...so from 1080 to 1080ti, there's generally about a 30-40% FPS increase, and they priced the 1080ti exactly 40% higher than the 1080; a predictable and rational strategy...HOWEVER, with the 2080ti, they've gone completely Apple -- roughly 30-40% FPS increase from the 1080ti, but priced 60% higher -- a hefty premium for those unused ray tracing cores...

    What's the point spending 20 minutes looking at how the Nvidia RTX 2080 TI FE compares to GTX 1080 and lower cards? The whole point should be to see how it fares against other higher end RTX 2080 Ti cards. The appealing form factor with only 2 slots of the FE makes it interesting.

    It would be nice if your bias against these cards wasn't so obvious throughout this review, it really doesn't need to be there. You basically admit that the marketing for these cards tinted your views and then proceed to basically do another review on the 2080 and how it isn't very much faster than the 1080ti while occasionally mentioning the 2080ti. In every benchmark slide you make sure to highlight the 2080 vs the 1080ti. When the Rtx does something good you must immediately follow it up with something to bring it back down. Your negative tone throughout was highly distracting. The price to performance ratio and the recommendation not to buy has it's place but at least mention the future potential of 2/3rds of the card which is non-utilized, (ray trace and tensor cores).

    I am gonna wait for the next generation,... got a 1440p 150-160hz display, and the 20series,... cant garantee me in all the games the max fps,... also got a ryzen system and gonna upgrade later in 2020 or something like that to the best performing ryzen cpu,... and hopefilly have finally a pc that offers me all the good frames and graphical eyecandies. I guess the 1080 non TI will do for the next two years.... sadly,.. i hoped theese cards offer a bit more performance,...

      No card will ever give you max fps on the lastest games. That just wont happen.

      In the same boat. If AMD can get their shit together they might bring the price down on these cards. If they actually release a card with 1080 performance at $200 like they claimed. Hopes and dreams.

      Even if its "only" 1070 performance for 200 it will put a lot of pressure on nvidia. And if they dont..well. still a win for everyone on a smaller budget.
