crazy . i ran my 9900k with turbo boost off for 4 years . I'm playing 2077 2.0 now and saw the speed was kinda lacking . i enabled turbo boost and it runs at 5ghz . i was worried about the temps because i see it ran at 76c max under load with 97-100% usage on all cores .
seems i don't have to worry since it seems like people got beyond 80c 4 years ago . never even changed the thermal paste once (i was worried because without turbo it ran at about 65 max)

If you'd bought an R7 2700X instead like a non-idiot you'd be able to in-socket upgrade to an R7 5800X3D today for only like ≈$200-250 out of pocket. 🤷 Sorry, not sorry.

Ryzen 7 2700x is beat by the i7 8700 and i5 8600k(amongst many others) in gaming and the price is near identical to the Ryzen 7 2700x. The only AMD chip that has any chance against any of the top intel chips is the newest $2000+ threadripper but even that may lag behind in real world gaming. Ryzen 7 is marginally better in workstation stuff but inferior to both the 8700 and i5 8600k in gaming and desktop performance. Intel offers the exact same bang for buck and probably even slightly better than AMD who has done nothing worthy of the praise its been getting lately.

&Abel if you are only interested in gaming, comparing the Intel chips to the 2700X is stupid because there are lower priced offerings from AMD that will give you much better value for gaming than the 2700X. The R5 1600 costs half as much as th 8600K, comes with a cooler included and will play any half decently optimized game at 60 FPS without any issues. The 8600K will give you 10-20% more fps, sure, but for more than double the price. If you actually do anything that benefits from multi-core performance the 2700X absolutely trounces the 8600K for the same price, it performs like 80% better in multi-threaded workloads against the 8600K while losing by maybe 10% in single threaded performance. Basically, you are full of shit.

*Threadripper is exactly 38,27% cheaper and with 4 Cores / 8 Threads more probably way better in rendering and all this stuff...*
*In addition, Intel users can strongly thank that AMD has Ryzen developed. Without Ryzen Intel would probably milk the last CPUs for at least one year more and this i9 9900K would cost you also at least 1000.-*

Not shitting $100 bills? So a 200 dollar difference in reference to how much you are spending on a PC build is going to break your bank? Are you upgrading every 6 months? Then that price diff split over the many months between CPU releases is tiny in comparison to performance increase. That why anybody who isn't 12 and actually has a job goes for the obviously better performing Intel series.

    • @bdhale34

Also take into account the 100+% higher price tag of the Intel and during these tests 15% higher clock speed and 12% higher clocked ram. so it's 15-20% performance lead is actually much much much smaller. Everyone is still bragging about an Intel IPC lead but at stock the 8700k vs 2700x the AMD chip actually gets a higher score for it's clock speed so it's instructions per CLOCK in single core is actually better than the 8700k.. but no one did/does the math on it to get the true IPC numbers they always ignore the clock speed part of the equation AMD takes 23.88MHz per point the 8700K needs 23.98MHz to get each point. sure that's only .10MHz less for AMD but it's still an IPC advantage literally everyone swept right under the rug by only showing the end score without accounting for the clock variable.

Intel was not always higher in IPC. Back in the days of 486's, the AMD CPUs were far superior not only in IPC but also in clock speed. And then there were the K6 CPUs, where they invented the "PR" (aka Performance Rating or Pentium Rating) to account for the much higher IPC on non-intel Chips.
Oh, and then there were the Athlon64 X2 Chips. Maybe they were not better per core, but at that time, intel was still pushing single core chips. So you could say by giving us twice the cores, AMD had much higher IPC per socket at that time.
And now again, AMD is pushing the limits where intel just tries to slow down and hamper innovation. Higher core counts, more PCIe lanes, 64-bit CPUs for consumers, multi-channel RAM ....
You name it, it was always AMD who pushed the boundaries. While intel has always tried to slow down any advancement and squeeze every last dollar out of every tiny step along the way.
When Lisa Su announced that they had sent developers to the drawing board and create a whole new platform from scratch, we all expected intel to have the next generation already up their sleeves. That is how much we got accustomed to intel holding back new stuff. But as it turns out, they had nothing. They still keep iterating on the same basic architecture. How long will it take them to come up with something really new? No one knows.
Because intel just isn't open about this stuff. Lisa Su told us back then, it will take a few years to get the new architecture ready. It is this level of openness, innovation and value-driven pricing that makes me an AMD fangirl.

I´m no expert on computers but lately I´ve been getting more into it since I built my first gaming PC. I was very close to buying a Intel CPU, but my friend convinced me to buy a Ryzen 5 1600 since it would be better value. I´ve been running the CPU at 3.95 Ghz since june and never ran into any problems. It idles at 22 degreec celcius atm and during the hot summer months it would idle at ambient temps. The highest temp I´ve gotten from it is 58 degrees during Time Spy benchmark and the same temps on User Benchmark. I couldn´t be happier :)

And when compared to Ryzen, Intel is really only a few % ahead on IPC, but w/ that couple % plus way higher clocks it pulls away in most games (although higher resolution it matters way less of course). As far as new arch, this Ryzen thing w/ inifnity fabric was a wake up call, i mean everyone, even Nvidia, is saying MCM is the way to go vs. Monolithic. But see, the thing w/ Intel's nodes is they are better than everyone else's. I am no expert or engineer, but as far as all the reading I've done on the subject Intels 10nm will be on par w/ TSMC and everyone else's 7nm, so basically, Intel's 14nm can be viewed as equivalent to somethingnlike 10nm (they don't have a 10nm i dont believe, just hypothetically speaking) @ TSMC and everyone else. But a lot of people are looking at the # 7nm, not realizing @ this point that # is not quite meaningless, but it is kind of unclear as to what exactly it refers to. Basically what I'm trying to say is, yes, 7nm outta TSMC will be better than what Intel has NOW (14nm), but IF they can get their 10nm up and running like their past nodes, it will be equivalent to TSMC's 7nm. Im not defending Intel here, I'm on both sides, as I'm happy to see competition drive innovation and prices down (though w/ the i9-9900K Intel still doesnt seem to have gotten the memo lol). It great to see AMD where they are, and I hope they continue to grow and improve, but i would say NEVER underestimate Intel. W/ their budgets for R&D and the ability to draw in the best architects and what not (again with $$) who knows what Intel can come up with or pull out their ass. Sure, they haven't really innovated in awhile, architecturally it's been the same shit for how long now, but thats because it works, and they never HAD to due to lack of competition. Well things are different now, I'm excited to see what the outcome of all this is going to be. AMD and Ryzen and the MCM approach has probably changed the industry in ways we can't even think of yet. It just needs time to be perfected, because as good as infinity fabric is, it is still a bottleneck, but i think in time they and the rest of the companies will figure out how to make that interconnect faster and lower latency, and thats when we'll probably see some truly incredible CPUs (and hopefully GPUs too). I dunno, no real point to my rant, its just a great and exciting topic IMO and can't wait to see where it leads us.

Which means games will run about 20% better on the 9900 then the 1950x, but editing rendering etc will perform better on the 1950x although is a negligible amount. Add in the cost of the cooler and it gets even worse. You'll do fine with 2700x included cooler, the 9900k however will need an 90 USD air cooler or an AIO. It's just stupid, get either threadripper or 7980XE if money isn't a problem.

720 cores, 1440 threads; what kind of glue is AMD's RnD department sniffing now? Because it oughta be really insane stuff in order to dish out a 720 core CPU (though knowing AMD's tendency to use powers of 2 and powers of 2 times 3/4, a 768-core CPU would make more sense to AMD; 720 sounds something that Intel would make).

Why the difference in memory speeds between the 9900K and the 2700x? You've got the Intel chip paired with a 3600mhz set of RAM, while the AMD chip only gets a 3200Mhz set...and if I remember correctly, Ryzen is pretty dependent on RAM speed/timings for its performance...just curious why you didn't use the same speed RAM for both test benches?

Hi Jay a really quick question I know chances of you replying are low but....im currently once this virus has calmed down I am looking to purchase a new system. I have seen your videos regarding the issue with the cpu case on these and thermals on overclocking. My system will be pre built by a company here in the UK and pre overclocked too. The specs today have been released for the new flight sim 2020. One of which is the processor which is advised to get the I7 9800x. Now that is way out my price range unfortunately so looking for the best alternative. With that processor being recommended it makes me think the game will be making use of hyperthreading and more than 4 cores. I am now torn between the I7 9700k and the i9 9900k are you able to offer me any advice. Regarding colpu cooler I will be selecting the h115i from corsair and it says on their website they would be looking to achieve UPTO 4.9ghz on the 9900k.
Thanks for taking any time to reply it will be much appreciated

@Phil Fry well i hope it isn't my lack of knowlegde in technology that made me purchase this. Wouldnt be good as I am a master degree engineering student in Cybernetics and Robotics... Maybe i should just resign from it. Clearly i have zero intelligence. Clearly there are 0 reasons to buy a processor that is across the board superior, worst case scenario equal, best case 30% faster than the AMD one. Because it cost a couple hundred bucks extra. I've only studied《circut design and binary process in computers》classes, I wouldn't even know what a pc is! And ofcourse, Ive never visited ARM chip Norway to see how they go through the design process of a new architecture, from developing to testing, granted not very in-depth. It would make zero sense for someone like me, to buy an i9 without it being an "uneducated/mistake". But i hope you have a nice day, and if you want to spend your dollars on something else than marginal performance gains in CPU, you are free to do so 😊! May I also add i bought 64gb of ram in my PC. Clearly money wasted as Games which is the only thing a PC can run wont utilize more than 16gb of ram . I have no idea how to utilize hardware let alone what hardware is used for.

Jay, man, I love your work, I really do. But you keep saying that Intel is far ahead in IPC compared to AMD. That is not the case whatsoever. IPC is very similar between the two, and AMD may even be ahead at this point. What Intel is ahead in is clockspeeds. If you want to compare IPC, test them at the exact same clocks and see what happens. I'm willing to bet quite a lot that Intel is not going to perform better then. Still, a 700MHz advantage is nothing to laugh about, but it just irks me when the term IPC is used wrongly. In fact, a 5GHz 9900k is clocked 17.6% higher than the 4.25GHz 2700x. That's about the difference in performance too. So, assuming perfect scaling with clocks, they are dead equal in IPC. Scaling isn't perfect, of course, but you get my point.

When Ryzen 2 comes out tho... Intel might be fucked

@@PikaPilot I hope so. Intel needs more pressure. It's the only way for better products and prices. Zen 2 shouldn't be far behind the 9900k in games.

I really don't think they're behind, really. I mean, I haven't seen any tests looking into it more in depth, so it's just a crude calculation on my part, but I believe they're too close to care about IPC. Or they're behind by 5-10% like you said and just scale better with clockspeed, even though they don't clock high. Regardless, I'm not going to disagree with you because neither of us has the whole picture, I suppose. For all I know, you could be right and I'm wrong and it would still be irrelevant with such differences. Thing is, if the rumors are true and Zen 2 does bring a 10-15% improvement in IPC... Man, that is gonna be interesting to see. I hope they don't go full Ryzen 1 and do something to also increase the clockspeeds, though.

That's true. But for Zen 2 the target shouldn't be "not far behind the 9900k", but rather how far ahead they may be able to pull. I mean, it may not be realistic to want something faster than the 9900k right now, but I don't think barely keeping up should be the target. As I said above, if the rumors of 10-15% in IPC hold true and AMD manage to squeeze better clocks out of these things, it's not impossible that we may see a 3700x beat the 9900k or at least trade blows with it. IMO everything is going to come down to clocks ultimately, however. Ryzen's IPC and clock scaling are already great and more than enough to keep it relevant. If the 2700x could clock to something like 4.6-4.7GHz we would be having a totally different conversation.
Very interesting times lie ahead. Very interesting indeed... Seeing monopolies get disrupted always amuses me.

i find it funny that Jay is talking about how Intel has the faster overclock/turbo speeds. "fastest seen ever for overclocking without hardcore cooling" but... my AMD FX 9370 has been running at 5.1 GHz for 6 years now, with only a corsair i110 aio liquid cooler. still heats my room nicely, but does not shut down my computer even in the summer. still running world of Warcraft with Multiboxer at medium-high settings for 6 accounts. never had to reset my overclock either. And while running ONLY through the ASUS overclock utility. I had it up to 5.3, but, kept crashing. :/ so.... stable at 5.1 CAN pull 5.2, but, sometimes crashed occasionally under load. i AM replacing my FX this winter, but... in the mean time, i am going to stick with my FX until i finish my house renovations... lol, not one single issue in 6 years. no, it is NOT a rocket anymore. yes, the new chips are FAR faster at lower clockspeeds. BUT... still rips along nicely fr what i DO use it for. was running a ROG 780... upgraded to a 1070. now i am set for next modern gen mobo, cpu, and ram. done me well for the time i have had it. my motherboard is starting tto fail from it all though. no complaints though, 6 years from AMD, from a chip that was called the biggest waste of silicon in history... lmao no regrets at all. those black chips are nasty little bastards. i would love to see a Ryzen 2700x "black edition" wonder how that would go. probably run a kiln off the radiator... ;)

Black Friday is coming up and now that 9k series is out, I'm heeding the advice for upgrading my tower. Is there or will there be a review/comparison for the various 9k series CPUs?

Question. Is a ryzen 3 2200g and 570 8gb a good combo? Will the gpu bottleneck the cpu? And 8 gb of ram 2400mhz

intel processors are always veeery good but their pricing compared to amd is just not worth it. but lets be real this cpu is a beast

plus the ability to upgrade simply does not exist in the current intel generation.

IPC is pretty much identical between Intel and AMD right now. The real difference is 4.2GHz vs 5GHz

    • @Sinesterr

was about to say that.. in some cases it looks like AMD's IPC is already higher because they come so close with such a gap in clock speed

Yes JayzTwoCents, you managed to reach that because the frigging VRMs were throttling because of the 95W limit.
