Intel's i5-9600K is the next in line with the 9900K and 9700K (the latter of which we haven't worked with yet), serving a more mid-range market at ~$250. The 9600K runs 6C/6T, similar to the 8600K, but has been updated with solder and higher native clock speeds. Overclocking the 9600K is also interesting, something we do in the review video above.

Just bought one of these, and checked out your review. I'm moving from a P55 Classified + i7 870 to Z370 FTW + 9600K, so it's still an upgrade for me. Time to make use of PCIe 3.0, but waiting for Intel 10nm HEDT, so it seemed like a good buy. That said, I don't play Far Cry. I'm picking it up to play X4, Star Citizen, and some AI intensive games, (what I usually play), like Battletech, so it should be fine. We'll see how it handles SC, but it can't possibly be worse than a 10 year old motherboard and CPU, even if it is still running strong, (25-30 fps in SC).
I'll try not to be disappointed that you don't like it ;)
And I'll try to remember to get back to you if I see any frame stutter, (in any of the games I play), on my build in any of these.

I tried using the command prompt to ping say yahoo.com and connection never drops when pages don't load in chrome or IE. I tried using XMP and manually setting ram in Bios but I get the same problem. When I set clocks back to defaults I have no issue with webpages loading. But when I OC to 5ghz that's when browser pages sometimes won't load. Any ideas? Forgive me if I've missed an explanation along the way but; will you please explain *if limiting FPS* (and how different methods affect results) to something well within the "typically expected range" for your system, averaged for all games "typically" played, *will result in a smoother visible output as an effect of giving the CPU more time than it needs* to turn through the frames, and therefore reduces the potential for frame-turn lag/spikes?

Should maybe revisit the gaming pc multitasking video, and which processors you don't have to worry about it with more and more games beginning to use 8 cores. With Battlefield V for example on 6700k 1080ti at 1440p, I am seeing the processor getting maxed out if I have a twitch stream or high res youtube video playback also running (hardware acceleration off)

GN did a review way back comparing the 8700K to the Ryzen7 1700 for streaming, showing the latter was the better choice, with an additional advantage when it came to transcoding captured video. Given current pricing levels, this is even more relevant today. Where I live, the 2700 is half the price of an 8700K.

I'm not very happy with the result>conclusion path taken here. When I look at the data presented at far cry I see almost 300% negative delta between the 9600K stock and the overclocked results. This tells me that there is an issue with your overclock. That also means at that point it would not be wise to use that data to argue about the necessity of 8 threads. If you want to do the latter simply take the 8700K run the test, disable HT in the bios, run the test again. That is the only way to avoid the most obvious pitfalls and confirmation bias. (Because who knows, there is an issue in the uefi, game, whatever). Personally I have an 8700K and I doubt HT will create a significant difference, especially on a stable 5 Ghz. However would still be interested to have this 'educated' hunch confirmed.

I disagree with this review. I got a 9600k for 250€ on black friday while an 8700k is currently about 420€ and the 2700x 320€ in my country. 9600k is sure to perform better in games across the board over the ryzen especially with the OC headroom. Now Far Cry 5 is an odd case but I'd argue that sporadic frametime spikes don't matter as much in singleplayer games. Now if you look at any multiplayer or competitive esports titles the 9600k leaves the 2700x in the dust by a considerable margin up to 25% or 30% and it can make a big difference if you are playing at 144hz or above. Especially games that do depend on IPC and clock speed Ryzen is not to be recommended and also it has much higher memory latencies. If you play on 60hz or 4k and do primarily rendering or workstation tasks ryzen will be a good choice but if you are especially multiplayer gaming focused or play on a high refresh rate you need to buy intel and no way around it.

@Keelan you should double check those facts. At same clockspeed the 2600k is less than 10fps ahead on avg in a typical scenario vs the 2500k in AC O. In BF1 it's less than that! In some modern games like FC5 the 2500k even wins. If you don't believe me /watch?v=TyA3UBxKxwM

MineClashTV well I just know in previous gens the i3, i5, and i7 categories all meant different thing
i3- higher core count/speed than pentium cpus
      i5-singlethreaded cpu frequency boost
      i7- hyperthreading capability
The reason they should introduce more is because they are definitely blurring those lines, like pentium with HT and i7 without

Btw, I've seen it said that Intel never had desktop dual-core i5s; they forget the i5 680 (and lesser models), oddly enough a chip that I hope to get past 5GHz, and (unlike modern i5s) it does have HT (2c/4t).

I just don't understand Intel's multithreading decisions this year. Not relevant here really, but still.
On another note, even with no multithreading the i5 finally caught up to my old-ass power sucking 4.5 GHz x5660 in multithreading! (Recks it in single core ofc)
Not that I'm upgrading my PC tho, lol. X58 FOREVERRRRR

@@ravocado4566 I guess it's the curse of the HEDT lineups :( I've been using a 5820k the last few years and I was recently looking at what a replacement motherboard would be if mine died and it's starting to mirror how x58 has been since reaching end of life. There's just so few boards out there and what is available is mostly OEM/server stuff and so expensive that it wouldn't make sense to stay with the platform if you need to replace the motherboard :(

I just got an i5 9600k as my i5 2500k was showing some issues with boosting and overclocking. Anyway how do I make sure that my i5 9600k is boosting to 4.6 GHz? As for Far Cry games I do like them but I can play them on console if need be or on my old rig if need be. Also honestly after dealing with all that my experience with RX 5700 XT was I was not going to go with an AMD cpu. In Canada also pricing made sense for me to go the route I did. Btw paid $289.99 on the cpu.

5:00 shows nothing imo, stalls can come from a load of things, usually not the processor itself. Mobo, drivers, bad luck or whatever.

Got a question: Why does nobody do GPU Blender tests? You can set which you use to render a scene. Rendering with a GPU will render fewer tiles at once, but those are bigger. Not sure if that data would matter.

Does the 9700k have similar dips as the 9600k? That would be good to know as someone who is constantly bouncing between 8600, 9700, and 9900k for my next build. If the 9700k has the same issue I would drop it entirely from the running. Price is no concern, I can make my own decisions, I just want to be well informed before pulling the trigger.
