An average young healthy male with limited prior athletic training can go from squatting .5 ~ .75x body weight to 1.5x body weight on the high end with the normal CrossFit programming. But beyond that he'll have to start supplementing CrossFit with additional training

    People who take CrossFit seriously, do more than just the "workout of the day" or drop into a box for a random class. I train with Ben Bergeron's, Comptrain program. A majority of the program is strength training (squat, press, deadlift), where we add 5lbs a week similar to what Rip prescribes. We do a lot of strict pull-ups and handstand push-ups. We focus a lot on midline and accessory work. We practice our clean and jerk and snatch positioning and technique. Once we have done our strength session or technique session, we will do a metcon (WOD) using common Crossfit movements. We focus on strength and technique to not only help prevent injury but to improve our performance for a local competition or the Open or daily the metcon's themselves. Crossfit is criticized for many reasons; low barrier of entry to become a coach, people performing movements they are not familiar with, the seemingly random nature of the workouts and more. But with a reputable coach and program, Crossift is a great way to train for overall athleticism.

    • @dragonchr15
      @dragonchr15 4 роки тому +3

      Overall athleticism can mean anything and cannot really be quantified as everyone has their own definition in mind. There are fat men running around on you tube that can deadlift 500+ pounds who call themselves athletes. Bowlers call themselves athletes. NASCAR drivers do as well i am sure.
      When you train for strength, you quantify it with numbers on the big 3 (or 4 with the press).
      When you train for e endurance, you can quantify with 5k and marathon times.
      Those have a universally accepted meaning.
      Crossfit is just doing a bunch of WODs for time and trying to beat records. The end result is you will lose weight and get better at crossfit, which is fine if that is the goal. These videos if crossfitters squatting heavy weights are misleading because they did not achieve that with crossfit.
      The problem is guys that go around saying that Crossfit made them stronger and faster when the truth is that the supplemntal training made them stronger or faster.

Don’t get me wrong, I would have never done it in my prime. Moving big weight and being competitive is far too much in my DNA. Competitive CrossFit is about finding the guy with the best average. Power and Olympic lifting is about the strongest out there. But as you get older, you worry less about your total weight lifted and start worrying more about your bloodwork and other health markers. CrossFit is better suited for overall health and wellness. You just have to get past the ego stage of training

    There is a glaringly obvious problem with Rippetoe’s deadlift coaching and I think it’s about damn time he addressed it. When certain types of men do the deadlift the bar will try and occupy the same space as their gonads at the top of the movement. This is especially bothersome to those of us with short arms, big balls and long torsos. Sometimes the penis will protect the gonads, but only if one deviates from proper technique by not dragging the bar across the front of the legs. Usually what happens is the heavy steel barbell presses against the nuts or, in extreme cases, separates them from one another within their sack. I would really like to deadlift heavier without smashing my god damned balls up against my legs. What do?

    • @nijowe93
      @nijowe93 4 роки тому

      Change your grip width ever so slightly to change your top position a bit. If your grip is all the way to the smooth you can always widen your grip to elivate the bar in the top position. It will make your rom slightly longer though.

    It's not called "Cross-strong, it's called Cross-fit. You can get "fit" doing it, but to do the workouts at the suggested weights or to compete you need to be strong enough. Having done modified CrossFit and seen main site programming I'd say its very hard if not impossible for an average person to get seriously strong doing main site cross-fit. Many boxes like my former one supplement with additional strength training but even that depends on the day you go and is somewhat random. I think most everyone should do crossfit for a month, quit, do starting strength for a year and then re-evaluate cross-fit as their "sport" but not their training method. It's a fun way to exercise and it introduced me to olympic lifts, I'm happy it exists. The gym I trained at was awesome and the people were cool. Starting Strength is superior by far for building a strength base.
