      @ruburtoe1 5 років тому +27

      Jordan Kroell sure, but the point is that the primary movers are not from the arm muscles. The arm muscles in the clean are primarily involved in gripping and minimizing the bar path during the movement. Using the arms to pull the weight up reduces the overall muscle/energy-use efficiency as opposed to using the larger hip and shoulder muscles.

      Roberto Villafana don’t forget the legs in that equation hips don’t completely do it all otherwise you’ll end up sending the bar outwards more as opposed to up

    Starting strength put over 30 pounds on my shitty scrawny little body in under a year, and I wasn't even eating as much as prescribed because I sucked at eating enough the first couple of months (used to be borderline anorexic)
    Mark Rippetoe is the king of no-bullshit teaching and no-bullshit training routines.
    On Starting Strength my squat went from 95 to 260, bench from 60 to 160, deadlift from 145 to 310, press from 45 to 105 and bent over row from 70 to 165, I didn't do powercleans because I had a really hard time learning them..

    • @jakevachon8948
      @jakevachon8948 7 років тому +33

      Yeah that part didn't really make sense. Of course you're going to have a shitty vertical if you weight 350lbs, your true vertical should be considered the one that you do AFTER losing the weight not before.

    • @Hanuman_
      @Hanuman_ 6 років тому +65

      SokrasDim it means that you will never be as good as the athlete that was born with a 35 inch vertical, they have far more potential than someone born with an 18 inch one.
      It's not important train a vertical it's just used as a marker of innate talent

    • @scottrogers1493
      @scottrogers1493 6 років тому +51

      Grizzly Strength, you missed the point. He's saying your true vertical is at your best, athletic weight. If you measure your vertical before losing weight and again after, you just measured two different people.

      @@toddf.packer9394 ya and hes completely wrong on his reasoning why. Just because he skips that step doesn't mean its not right. He literally pulls with his arms the same way they teach. The only real difference is that USAW is exaggerating the arm pull at light weights. As it gets heavier it translates into a straighter pull with less arcing. This isnt a great video and has way to much unnecessary information as well as confusing and just straight misleading. Sure a few points are decent but its far from good. He also never even mentions the fact that the guy doing it needs to work on his front rack position. Thats one of the most important parts to a strong power clean without injuries. That guys going to end up with hurt wrists if he continues like that.

    Great explanation. Clean is an exciting lift to perform, and it's benefits transfer directly to contact sports like football, rugby, wrestling, etc. Thanks for posting.

      Meissnerflux I don't do any sports, but I still want to learn how to power clean just because I want to. Is it pointless for me to pursue learning this lift then?

    • @meissnerflux
      @meissnerflux 7 років тому

      Only you know the answer to that. But I don't see why not. It helps to be overall stronger in a somewhat functional way. If you ever need to defend yourself physically, youd be better off focusing on clean instead of something like bench press. Also, it is helpful to overall posture and physique I would imagine.

      Meissnerflux a gun or a knift probably work better than power clean in self-defense.

    If you're going to learn it this way I would advise putting some light plates on each side because I dropped the bar on my foot today and broke a toe
