Mark, don’t y’all be so hard on this guy. The kid is 22. Remember 22? When guys our age could ( and would) do stupid shit like racing motorcycles or riding half wild horses or riding bulls, or drinking until they closed the bar at 2 A.M. then going for the worst possible food passing out at 4, waking up at 6:30, and arriving at work at 7, wondering if you would live until noon…..then doing it all over again the next night? Point being is, at his age, nothing he can do will have much long term effects. When I was 22 I was 5’ 10” and around 160 and I looked jacked. I wasn’t very strong but I had big arms and, wait for it…..ABS! This kid probably just wants to impress some girl. He’s already committed to doing strength training after his bodybuilding show, so why are Nick and Rusty acting like he just got their daughter pregnant? Damn! Lighten the fuck up, he’s 22!

Hey Rip. Thank you for writing some awesome books I’ve been reading. And I wanna say you guys have been doing terribly exceptional job. I followed your instruction to eat more than I think I should and have gained 11 pounds to weigh 199 pounds ; I am 45 years old, 5’10”. I’ve been doing my LP for almost nine months now. I, with the gained weights, just set my new 5 RM PR (3 sets of 5 at 153 pounds) for my press after being stuck for two weeks when I usually failed the last rep of the last set and have been setting new 5RM PR for my bench which is now 200. My question is do I have to keep gaining weight to be lifting heavier weights when I height remains the same and get older every year? Is building your gut muscles like you said the only solution to this problem? Thank you.

Usually love Rips commentary but he has always been flat out wrong about nutrition and physique. The same way he says nobody can tell that the kid lifts, half the SS guys are in the obese category and people can’t tell they lift. I met a power lifter at my work and was shocked to hear he was a competitive power lifter, I just thought he was fat. Rip believes it’s worth putting on 40 lbs of body weight on for 10 lbs of muscle. If you can’t do 15 strict form dead-hang pull ups, you either aren’t strong or you need to lose weight. Should he get to 6% bodyweight? No. But the SS guys with 50 lbs of excess weight are in a lot more jeopardy of health problems

There is a video of Rip doing 18 chin ups with good form the day before he had an operation on I believe his supraspinatus. He would have been in his late 50's at the time.
