    I’ve been under exposing my shots because that’s what I’ve learned on other cameras, and it’s been bothering me bringing out shadows on the RP. Knowing that I’d be better off overexposing slightly and using a higher ISO is a huge relief. Thank you!

    I appreciate the thorough testing. After upgrading to the RP and RF24-105 F4 L lens from a T4i and 18-135 kit lens I absolutely could not be happier. The advantages of a more professional (and more expensive) camera from any manufacturer would be lost on a person at my skill level. I just love to get out and enjoy my new gear. I think I must have been one of the "target" consumers.

    I'm on my fourth Canon, currently using both the 5DS and 1DX. I honestly can say I have no interest at all in mirrorless cameras at this moment in time, with the possible exception of medium format. In respect to Canon, they just seem to be years behind the competition from Sony.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 років тому +13

      In some ways, yes, though in terms of the basic ergonomics and the quality of the RF lenses, they are leaders. What they need is a new spate of vastly improved sensors along with the kind of heat dissipation that will allow them to catch up on the 4K (and beyond) video front.

    Interesting analysis. I think I will be keeping an eye on the histogram, and using the "expose to the right" approach, as this sensor seems to lend itself more to that.

    Thumb up and subscribed! That's by far the best sensor analysis on youtube. I have the RP from a couple of months and love it. The RF 24-105 lens is amazing, and i feel very comfortable with the handling and ergonomics of the camera. Indeed the dynamic range is not the same of competitors, however taking a picture is not pointing the camera in a random direction disregarding light orientation and distribution , then complain if you can't recover 4 stops with clean shadows ...

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 років тому

      That's a pretty gross oversimplification of the purpose of dynamic range, but I agree that if you enjoy your camera and images it produces, then you don't need to worry about the tech specs from it.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI of course there are photographers that NEED the best dynamic range ... but my feeling is than over 100 persons buying a nikon or sony and not a cheaper eos rp or 6d mkii, finally only 10 of them actually NEED the extra stops of dynamic range, while the other 90 just WANT that ... the pictures at the end of the video for my tastes are truly amazing and showing that this is a perfectly capable camera.

  • @fintanmctiernan8284

    Why does every review centre on Dynamic Range ?
    Would most photographers not try and get their exposure right before they press the shutter ? As far as high ISO goes some sensors are better than others and that’s just the simple facts of it. How many people actually need High ISO to warrant such review time on every single sensor being produced. While I watch a lot of reviews and great credit must go to the reviewers who spend so much time helping other people decide on a purchase the whole review industry should review itself, in my humble opinion.
    Thanks for your time Dustin and your reviews are good and well presented and fair.

      I'm pretty good at getting exposure right, but I can certainly tell when I'm working with a camera with good dynamic range and when I'm not, so I guess I'm personally one of those people. And with all due respect, Fintan, this is a free video on the internet. I never cease to wonder at those who complain over a free video that no one made them watch - one that is clearly labeled.

    Nice test, and kind of expected results, but disregarding the dynamic range differences I personally get the impression that the RP actually appears sharper and more clearly separates fine detail. That might well be a UA-cam thing, but it seems to me that the RP may have less internal noise reduction applied, and perhaps could take a bit more noise reduction in post. Again, that's just an impression from UA-cam, but it would be interesting to examine the raw files. Thanks for yet another great review

    I know this is an old video but I am considering buying in the near future either the 6d mk2 or the rp. In my opinion, at their price, I don't expect them to be performing as well as a 5d mk IV. I wouldn't expect either of them for example to outperform the 5d in terms of dynamic range, especially when pushed 2 stops beyond ISO 6400. I am upgrading from a canon 2000d (t6i i think) and it's important for me to be able to get higher burst rates, wider angles and cleaner shots especially at ISO 3200-6400 (the images from my current 2000d are horrendous at these ISO ranges). I am thus in search of a camera within a certain budget that still delivers in terms of quality and has the advantages of a full frame sensor. So for me, the limitations of these 2 cameras will probably never reveal themselves (let's say a situation where I have underexposed by 4 stops). So while I know that they are not as capable as a 5d mkiv, I know they'll outperform by a large margin my current entry level 2000d for a decent price and that alone should be enough to cover what I need.

      Yes, I know. I resist even thinking about Sony because of their terrible menu system with its pitiful touch activation and the lack of a fully-articulated screen. Sony has arguably the best low light performance of any mirrorless DSLR but having owned an a6000 I just can't seem to make the switch back to Sony. I absolutely love my M50 but the M-mount lenses, while decent, are lacking the sort of resolution I really want. Dustin, I have a Canon apsd 77D. I'm considering what to graduate to, to get better overall image quality, but without spending a lot of money. (I used to own a Canon 6D and found that FF camera gave me better resolution and better color tones than my crop sensor cameras, so am hoping for some of that sort of improvement). Do you think this RP would produce sufficiently better overall image quality than my 77D for things like travel, landscapes, portraits of friends and family and such? The price step up to the new R6 is a bit much, and i worry that it's 20 megapixel sensor doesn't allow for much cropping. I'd welcome any advice you can provide. Thanks, Craig

    Thanks for the excellent reviews on the RP. I'm considering upgrading from a Sony a6400 to the Canon RP, specifically for better indoor family pics (kids and animals playing, family pics as posed as you can get with young kids, etc) in less than ideal lighting at higher ISO than what I get with the a6400. I primarily shoot jpeg in A or P mode, so I don't think the considerations you shared with regard to over-exposing and DR apply to me. I've never really used video much on my cameras (typically take videos on the phone), and when I do, it's always in 1080p not 4K to preserve space. Given what I'm describing, do you think the RP would actually be an upgrade for me, so does it make more sense for me to stick with the a6400? Thanks.

      I'm not sure it would be a optical upgrade, but I suspect you will enjoy the handling more. It feels great in the hand.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for the reply. Based on your testing and given the type of shooting I'm hoping to see improved results for (indoor, not so great lighting pics of family - kids at play, etc), do you think I'd be taking a step backwards with the RP from the a6400? Thanks!

      You wouldn't have as much dynamic range, and I don't think ISO performance would be much better. As I said, the biggest advantage of the RP is that it is a nicer camera to use, but it isn't better in sensor performance. In some metrics it is definitely worse.

    On sensor performance, I remember you testing the Nikon d850 vs eos 5 m4 , in that comparison you felt the eos was holding it's own to the d850 . And even better . So I'm surprised that you think canon needs to up its game. This after all is a super cheap entry level fullframe camera . Like to hear your thoughts . Ps do come to the same conclusion for the eor R ?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 років тому

      I think you may be misinterpreting some of my findings. I found that the Canon provided better color science, but the D850 had both better dynamic range and slightly better high ISO performance. The RP sensor is quite a bit behind the 5DIV sensor in some key areas, however, so that places it at a disadvantaged compared to much of the competition.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI yes sorry I was going of memory, I totally agree with the color science, I had the d810 , even that sensor beats my eos r by a mile in dynamic range but the skin tones of conan is exceptional. If you cant equal or better Sony you have to do like everyone else does and use Sony sensors! sticking with old technology only drives away loyal Canon customers like me 15yrs. I was waiting for Canon to come up with a good update mirrorless wildlife camera so far neither the R or RP come close. So it's really narrowed down to the Sony A9 or the Nikon D850 as Like Canon did Nikon rushed out the Z6 and 7. I might have got the RP as an Astro mod cam but seeing how bad it is when you stretch the image it's a definite no go, it's also useless for wildlife. I'd get better results with an old second hand D750 even a D610 going cheap these days for astro modding at least it's less likely to have banding. Canon should stop crippling their cameras they are already well behind and not a company to either stick with or even starting.

      So you say Canon sensor sucks and you talk about the Sony A9? you know that the A9 Dynamic range is slightly worse than the Canon R/5DIV/1DXii right?
      Its funny how everybody just looks over the fact that not ALL sony cameras have great sensors.
      And stop all this "canon is behind bla" bullshit. canon does alot of things that others just dont do(at least that well) too.
      Speaking of ergonomics, Amazing touchscreens/usability, new lense designes, Incredible Wifi app. How long are we waiting for sony to put in a simple full function rotating touchscreen in their mirrorless cams now? in these areas sony is almost a decade behind!

      @@MikedieONE Hi there If I wanted dynamic range especially for landscape I wouldn't get the A9 or the Canon I would get the Sony A7R3 or the D850 which get 100 in DXOmark the A9 Is the best you can get for fast action. I do nature photography.. Have a read of this copy paste...The A9 features technology that hasn't come to any other mirrorless camera as of now. It uses a stacked Exmor RS sensor with an integral memory and high speed circuitry behind the pixel area. This structure allows the camera to process data faster than any other Sony camera (ten times faster than the A7 III) go check it out at the moment they've reduced the prices considerably.
