MORE THAN A REVIEW IT IS A TOUR THROUGH THE CAMERA AND WHAT IT CAN DO. I LEARNED A LOT AND ALSO ABOUT HOW CAN YOU PLAY AND GET AMAZING RESULTS. Sorry caps, I just wanted to let you know how grateful I am.
Your reviews are, there’s no other word for it, epic! The amount of work you must put in before each video is very impressive. I can’t afford a full frame camera at the moment but part of the fun of our hobby is learning about new cameras and making a mental wish list for future reference! And there are no better reviews to help us than yours. I had several 'full frame' cameras in days long ago, including Fujica and Minolta models which I very much enjoyed. Why are full frame cameras so expensive now that the film is replaced by an electronic sensor? Well, there’s the answer I suppose, all the electronic stuff is very expensive! I guess if you added up the price of all the rolls of 24 and 36 exposure film we bought and added the cost of processing/printing them to the cost of the cameras it might be a better comparison - now we have to buy it all at once! Ah well, looking forward to more 'epic' reviews from you!
Your kind comments are appreciated, thanks. It does take time, but these are projects that I enjoy. It's the sensor that's expensive. If there's a failure on a die making smaller sensors, there are many more that are OK. With full frame, a failure is more expensive - in addition, of course, to all the other factors like larger/faster processors for handling more data.
I like the point about comparing to film costs and buying it all up front. If you do that comparison FF digital is a bargain! I must remember that for the next time my wife spots me looking at camera reviews! :-)
It really doesn't seem like the camera deserves the flack it gets online. It looks great to me! Clearly not intended to be a "pro" camera, but an affordable, reliable camera for consumers. Add that killer kit lens, and it seems like a more reasonable option than going in for professional-level bodies that most people don't really need. Great review, sir!
Exactly right - not sure why people were disappointed, but maybe that worked in its favour? My expectations were not high, and I ended up really enjoying this camera, which is really nicely matched with that lens. Thank you for your kind words, appreciated.
This was an excellent review, you covered so many little tips and features with plenty of detail, never hangng on anything too long for it to get boring but also detailed enough to show youve actually fully used the camera and paid attention to all the nuances. thanks.

I am surprised by how much I like it, too (currently using an Olympus E-M1II and Nikon D500). The 24-105 L lens is the cherry on top!
Great review. I played with the RP at a recent photo-show and was impressed. Your review has picked up lots of stuff I haven't seen elsewhere (and I now get the Fv mode - thanks!). Although I'm currently happy shooting on my Olympus, if I ever jumped up to FF then the RP and Sony A7ii are the two I'd be considering.

Lots of useful information here. I'm taking notes! I have this camera and really like it. This video will help me understand and use its features. I was hired to photograph stage and audience photos at a dance studio dress rehearsal and was impressed with the low light shots ... so was my client. Thanks for the excellent review and explanation.
It's always a pleasure to read a comment from a photographer who's found my information useful. Thanks for taking the time to comment, and for your kind words.
I have a Sony FF system and Fuji's X-T3 and X-M3 but I picked this up used with the 35mm RF macro and it's a LOT of fun. It's light, full featured, and takes great photos! What a great review!
The sensor in the RP is fully exposed when changing lenses. It does not have a cover that comes down and covers the sensor, as the "R" version has, making the sensor vulnerable to dust when changing lenses. This is a real thumbs down in my opinion, along with no in-body image stabilization (IBIS). It's a decent price, if those things don't matter to you. Canon will need to bring down the prices of its R, R5, R6 bodies if they want serious DSLR users and lovers to switch to mirrorless. Prices will need to match current DSLR prices.
Thank you for the review. It looks like a great full-frame camera if you are not into video too much. I am going to buy one soon and your review helped my decision.
I appreciate your clarity. I own this camera and other that it’s poor lens collection, for the average Joe, I love it. I bought the Tamron 35-150 and the Tamron 45mm, the Tamron 15-30 will soon follow. Thanks for the great review and the time you take to do it!! BTW, I just subscribed! 😀

Hello Maarten may be I'm wrong but It seems to me that for the same price range, the Fujifilm X-T3 has much more to offer...Unless you already have a significant number of Canon lenses
For as much as I'm an X-T3 fan, and don't believe that most of us need full frame, that is the advantage of the RP. I didn't get a chance to try the adapter, but yes, that's clearly a benefit to staying with Canon. Let me know if you need a link to a Canon to x-mount adapter.
@@MaartenHeilbron Hey Maarten, yes you can because all informations are good to take, but after 7 months I'm only at 48 percent of the money I need (bloody poverty) to get the X - T3 and the "kit lens", so this part would have to wait . Looking forward to your next video.

There are others who do it much better.
While I really liked this camera, and if I owned one would certainly not trade it in, my preference would be the X-T3. I like the way it operates and looks.
Top Man, Great video. the best all round review of the RP todate. I personally think the viewfinder could be of better definition. I might of misunderstood you about skipping through the menu main tabs, this can be done by pushing the info button. I think that there are a lot of reviewer snobs out there that because the association with the 6D2. they have missed the potential in this camera. You have dispelled that. Well done. best wishes Si
Yes, not sure why the same viewfinder used in the R wasn't used here too. Thanks for the tip about the INFO button, I didn't figure that out. Finally, thank you very much for your kind words, they are appreciated.
@@MaartenHeilbron I'm interesting you say the viewfinder is best on the market at 2.4 Million Dots, do you think it better than the EOS R at 3.6 Million Dots and as some of the Sony's A7 series have. Or is your criteria different? Regards Si.
Its an excellent camera. tons of features. Very reasonable. Only issue i have is my battery life on it is quite poor. I also would love if Canon could come up with the Clear Vision Zoom that Sony has.
I have two batteries in my camera bag, plus one in the RP - problem solved. As a plus, all three (numbered) batteries get regular usage/recharge in sequense.
Hoi Maarten, Thank you for this excellent video! I am in the process of buying this camera. The thing I not 100% sure about is whether to get the 50mm F1.8 or the 24-105 F4-F7.1 lens. The main use of the camera will be food photography. I think I should get both at the end of the day, but which lens would you recommend to get me started. Groetjes uit Noorwegen, Richard
While the f1.8 aperture will provide better photos in low light, 50mm is a little long for food photography - you may end up standing on chairs. The 24-105 is likely the better choice, but a wide-angle large aperture prime might better - or add a flash to your purchase.
Nice video. However I wished you touched on using EF lenses or third party EF mount lenses using an adapter. I hope you make another video on this. Thank you.
I believe it was a couple months ago, the camera + short zoom was priced at $999 --- they threw in the lens for free it seemed! Considering it is right priced, made in Japan, with lens made in Taiwan, what's not to like. Canon might not have the best dynamic range sensors, but they seem to have lovely color and focusing is good so??? Sounds like a good deal to me. -Loren
Hi Maarten. Thanks for the channel and your nice reviews. Is it still worth buying a used RP or is it better to look at newer crop cameras (R10, X-10S/20S)? No specific tasks, general family/travel photography (start with kit lenses, primes in case of RP). Been mostly using the phone for the last few years, but would like to get back to cameras (and trying FF looks tempting). Thanks.
It’s great to have the detailed walkthrough of the camera features and menus, but to be honest, the one thing that you never seem to spend enough time on is the most important: image quality. Including dynamic range, rendering of skin tones, landscapes, high ISO performance, etc. you mention at the end of this video that the distinction between mirrored or mirrorless no longer matters, and I agree, but I would also argue that adding more and more bells and whistles also no longer matter. It’s all about the final image.
Yes, good comment, fair complaint. Here's the thing. The quality of all the cameras that I review is high, and while the issues that you mention are clearly of interest, for these cameras those are small details and differences. Video is not the ideal medium to address those (what could I show, or what could you possibly discern in a 4K (8Mp) video - even if you are watching in 4K, UA-cam's bandwidth severely compromises quality. In addition, I do not have the setup (or discipline to be honest) to configure a test scenario that is repeatable for all the cameras I review. Quality analysis is an issue that's very technical and readily available on many other websites and channels (dpreview, tony northrup and many more) that I don't feel the need to do that. I'm not sure that I agree about the bells and whistles, although I do often feel that, particularly at the high end, manufacturers add more gimmicky features than needed. The intention of my videos is to give you a hands on sense of how the camera works. I provide detail on all the features, functions and capabilities, demonstrating the implementation and results. I comment extensively on usability. I hope that those are issues that are also important and in my judgement, it's an area where there are not many others providing their opinion. Finally, although there are some objective measures for quality, in the main it's a highly subjective field, and rather than to share my opinion I prefer to let my viewers come to their own conclusions. Sorry to post such a long reply, but I do thank you for your kind words.
Thanks for the kind words. Over years of reviewing, I've learned that familiarity makes menus easy to navigate. They generally have a fairly steep learning curve.
Nice and quite usefull review . Besides price , this camera also stands out as being the lightest full frame system body , wich is the main point for me . If i add the fully mobile screen as i like taking vertical low shots , this becomes the only fit , again in FF . I prefer small primes to zoom but guess what : next week the RP + adapter + rf 35 f1.8 is macro stm are $1600 ... canadian + taxes , so about $2K with cards and batteries . A hard decision since i don't lack equipment but it would be quite a walkaround with much higher iso capabilities than what i already have.
Yes indeed, a fine camera combined with a superb *NEW* RF 'L'-lens. All together within a nice set price. A very thorough, although 'fast', review - that even an EOS RP owner have to play/replay to get it... :o I've had the RP set for a couple of months now, still learning, also from Your review ! Good job ! ... I Wonder how Nikon ppl. celebrates summer this year ;-)
We just bought one - having some issues taking pics of moving subjects - we primarily wanted to be able to shoot bans at concerts - sports etc. all moving targets- any pointers. surely this camera is good for this - we are entry level and used a T7 before - this is our first full frame so be gentle on us - we just need some pointers! Thank you in advance
14:34 "In Program mode there's no shift mode for alternate shutter and aperture combination". I'm not quite sure what you mean by shift mode, and I don't know about this camera. But Canon's standard method of selecting a different combination has always been simply to roll the "main" (top) dial - no special mode required.
It sounds like you know exactly what I mean and I was as surprised as you were. I triple checked that I hadn't missed some button to activate it, but the manual also makes no mention. Such an odd omission.
Remarkable! But then I must confess that although I mostly do shoot in P mode, I've never actually changed the combination in this way. If I don’t like what P mode suggests, I always go to a different mode, mostly Av. So this omission wouldn’t be a dealbreaker for me. But the fact that you can’t record video in 1080 with an EF-S lens attached is! (And I don’t like the small battery - why not an LP-E6n?)
I've argued with a lot of critical people on internet about this camera being logical for the customers to buy. Unless one shoots fast action photography or professional video, this will cover all their needs. At a price point that is hard to argue with. And for the thousands and thousands of Rebel series users out there, for example, this is a perfect upgrade, that will come with next to no learning curve and significant improvement in capabilities and IQ. I see the argument that RF lenses are very expensive a void one too. There is abundance of lenses for Canon EF mount out there, both cheap and expensive, big and small, consumer grade and professional. One should buy what they need, want or can afford and just go use the camera.
This it's one of the most underrated channels on UA-cam.
That's very kind, thanks for taking the time to comment.

@@christelleberthon Always happy to help.
I've just bought that camera and your video is very useful."That FV mode does it all"As for me I don't really know yet what to think about it but I feel I could easily do without it.Thanks and congratulation on your channel .By the way I live in Auvergne, next to Clermont-Ferrand and I was wondering why you did not do some videos in French , as I am sure you can speak French...
Happy to read that you appreciate my videos. I'm envious of your location - we love France and it has been very to not be able to travel. ua-cam.com/video/xDhF5SvwVRI/v-deo.html
Although I do speak French, it's not enough to convey the complex concepts and detailed technical aspects of cameras in 2022. There are others who do it much better.
nothing like a swivel screen - good stuff
Agreed, thanks for the kind words.
Great informative review. Thank you.
That's very kind, thanks for commenting.
Thanks for your valuable review. I just got mine with 35/1.8 today :D
I appreciate your kind words, thanks for commenting.
Subscribed. I LOVE your reviews can you talk about the benefit of the RF lenses over the EF? Thanks for this video
Although I will ask, Canon Canada recently has not been cooperative enough to think that will happen.
Excellent review of the RP. Thanks
Thanks for your kind words, appreciated.
Thanks for the Great review. Congratulations!!!
I'm pleased by your kind words, thanks for commenting.
Awesome review!
Thanks! Always my pleasure to post videos that get positive comments.
The best video I've ever seen!!!!! Bravooooooo
That's very kind, thanks for commenting.
As always, precise
Thanks, always a pleasure to hear that viewers enjoy my videos.
Great review about a great camera. Well worth the investment with excellent image quality.
I thought so too. Thanks for your kind words, appreciated.
Great review. Told me all I need to know.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for your kind words.
You, over everyone else on UA-cam, I trust. Curious for yourself, would you choose this or the Fuji XT3?
While I really liked this camera, and if I owned one would certainly not trade it in, my preference would be the X-T3. I like the way it operates and looks.
This guy is so pleasant it's refreshing.
This guy thanks you for your kind words.
simply amazing review. subscribed
Thanks for the kind words, and the subscription.
Regards Si.
@@saintsi6997 Sorry, my mistake, I was thinking about the R, not the RP, I've edited my comments.
Great Channel I just subscribed and bought this camera thank you!
Thanks for your kind words, and your subscription, appreciated.
Outstanding review.

Very useful review, Thank you so much, sir.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for commenting.
Excellent video of the canon Rp no bull just tells you what you are thinking of thank you..
Always nice to read positive comments from my viewers, thanks!
Its an excellent camera. tons of features. Very reasonable. Only issue i have is my battery life on it is quite poor. I also would love if Canon could come up with the Clear Vision Zoom that Sony has.
It didn't seem quite poor to me. And there's always the option to buy another battery. With the 4K crop, it's just like the Clear Vision Zoom!
@@MaartenHeilbron I mean using the crop more for stills. I do wish it had that ability.
@@BJJandBS For stills, I would not use those kinds of tools in camera. Crop your images in post. Anything else reduces quality.
I have two batteries in my camera bag, plus one in the RP - problem solved. As a plus, all three (numbered) batteries get regular usage/recharge in sequense.
@@kospaang An excellent plan, thanks for sharing.
well done- great review
Thank you kindly! A pleasure to read your kind words.
Thank you.
That's an excellent suggestion, however, I don't think I can accommodate your request.
-Loren
Sounds like a good deal.
Excellent, comprehensive review. You noted the lack of panorama. Is there a simple way to video and later convert to a pano still??
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. No. Just take stills and use photoshop or other to stitch them together - that provides a better result anyway.
Amazing review thanks ! For landscape photography would you recomend the canon rp or the sony a7 III ?
Sure. With the right lens, both are very good choices.
Your videos are the best when I’m hung over
Hmmm .... I'm gonna say Thanks for the kind words and leave it at that.
The one review which matters
Finally no more 10 or 15 minutes blabbering on its video functions blah and blah
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words.
Whoa. Love the review and your style reminds me of Jay Ingram. Subbed!
That's very kind, thanks for taking the time to comment and to subscribe.
Thanks.
Yes, I think that it's a good used purchase.
Good revew. Thank you.
Always nice to read kind words from an appreciative viewer.
Very good review. Thanks
That's very kind, thanks.
Sorry to post such a long reply, but I do thank you for your kind words.
very nice review ! did you ever miss not having an internal flash ?
Thanks for the kind words. I didn't, but I don't use flash much and when I do an optional flash is much more flexible and useful to me.
A very useable focus stacking routine is part of the free DPP software that comes with the camera so you do not need Photoshop.
Good tip, thanks.
I find Canon's menus easy to navigate, it's Fuji's that give me a headache. Overall a solid review thank you.
Thanks for the kind words. Over years of reviewing, I've learned that familiarity makes menus easy to navigate. They generally have a fairly steep learning curve.
Detailed and excellent as always
That's very kind, thanks for being the first to comment.
Thanks for another wonderful video
Always nice to see your avatar in the comments, always nice to read your nice words.
Thanks for the kind words - I sympathize with your plight. All camera decisions have become complicated with no simple solutions.
Excellent review
I appreciate your kind words, thanks.
Great as usual
That's very kind, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Yes indeed, a fine camera combined with a superb *NEW* RF 'L'-lens. All together within a nice set price.
A very thorough, although 'fast', review - that even an EOS RP owner have to play/replay to get it... :o
I've had the RP set for a couple of months now, still learning, also from Your review !
Good job !
... I Wonder how Nikon ppl. celebrates summer this year ;-)
Thanks, it's always nice to know I've provided useful and interesting content.
What issues are you having? Which lens(s) are you using?
I don't shoot P either, but felt I needed to mention that for those that do. Right, not a great video camera on any count.
Very instructive
Thanks for your kind words.
Nice explanation
Thanks, always nice to hear from a viewer who appreciates my work.
I agree, this camera doesn't get the respect it should.
