That’s because he knows a lot about cameras and is not stuck to a certain brand. He’s also not afraid to tell the truth. Other guys are just afraid of getting haters. If a person hates Dustin for being honest, they need to get a life.
I've had the RP for just about 3 months and I have to agree with your review. I got the 24-105 RF 4L with the RP instead of getting the R hoping Canon comes out with a higher end mirrorless. Using it in video mode at 1080 with the IS lens is great too. The 4k is fine if the camera is not moving very much but if you move around a bit, the rolling shutter effect is brutal. I got the camera I expected and Iove it. Thanks for your reviews Dustin! I watched many of your reviews to help me make my decision. Look forward to many more!! Take care!
I upgraded from the SL2 to this. It's an AMAZING camera for the price. The best part is you can adapt old full frame EF lenses to get that full frame look on the cheap while still getting that "what you see is what you get" mirrorless viewfinder. For the increased noise, it's a non issue really. But if I really need to pull shadows, I just denoise it with Topaz Denoise AI and call it done.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Sir, just want to let you know you make some of the best camera reviews on UA-cam. Honest and informative. Your review was the one that got me to buy the camera.
Great Review! I love your style - you review it from the points that most people care about. Which camera was doing your filming while sitting in front of the fire pit - was that the Sont A7R III?
Been using the RP awhile now. Made it through 4 countries over the past year. I like it. I do NOT like how the screen swivels. I shoot landscapes mainly so preferred how the screen came in and out on the Sony A7iii. I love the focus of the camera, its great. Focus peaking is great. Images are good. VF is not amazing but fine. I dislike most the little sensor that turns off the back screen and sends it to VF. Its annoying. Highly. So much so I just started shooting 100% with the VF and screen closed on the back.
I got a used 6D in early 2018 and was pretty satisfied (enthusiast here). Once I knew RP came out at such a low price, I immediately got the RP (sold the 6D later). I was impressed that there was a difference in photo quality (pictures are sharper). DPAF is amazing and overall the Grip of the camera is decent (or good for mirrorless). For a photos, I think RP is much more worth it than R (although I wish RP had the focus guide function & silent shutter other than auto/scene mode & and stupid dumbdown of no FULL HD (only 720p or 4K with no DPAF) when using EF-S lens!!!! (yes, you can adapt EF-S 10-18mm into RP using adaptor with 1.6x crop = 16mm)). If you are into videos, I say you should stay away from RP and get something else.
Fascinating. Detailed, useful review, as usual. No one else seems to have mentioned a lot of the things you picked up on such as the sensor quality difference (R vs RP). Thanks!
Hello, Dustin, or anybody there who can answer this question. Please help me to decide between Canon EOS RP and Sony A7ii. I take stills and some video. One thing that bothers me about Canon, is that there is no image stabilizaton. Thank you all.
Two questions I hope you can help answer! 1) Now that this is $999 (US), do you think it’s bang for the buck is pretty good or downright amazing? 2) If someone needed to shoot in an occasional super low light situation (at a home birth or outdoor at night for example), would you say this RP would definitely need a capable flash to assist/would it be possible to eliminate that discoloration effect with flash involved in low-light spaces?
It's definitely a lot of camera at that price point, and is a lot of fun to use. I would recommend going for a lens with a faster maximum aperture instead of going for a flash. You'll get more natural looking photos. The RF 50mm F1.2L is the big budget choice, but a lens like the RF 35mm F1.8 isn't a bad option, either.
Dustin I have been one of your funs. I am a wedding photographer and I have been shooting with 5dmiii. I am looking at upgrading into the mirrorless system. I am considering buying the RP but looking at the fact that I shoot mainly weddings and Portraits, will this camera best serve my Needs as a Wedding Photographer???
@@DustinAbbottTWI Had A Canon 24mm-105mm STM on a 6D1 for a bit. Someone that used it for minute told me it worked good in Video but they were saying there was only like 3 or 4 STM cameras at the time and the 6D1 was not one of them. if its just a motor that explains it then.
They were using the term STM incorrectly. What they were referring to is DPAF continuous autofocus in video, which STM and similar technologies work in a smoother fashion in that scenario.
@@DustinAbbottTWI One thing No one seems to talk about is the different light and or color meters in the cameras . I remember reading the T4i to 70D to 6D1 and the 5D3 All read Light and color Differently and that hand to do with why in low light reds pinks yellows were less fuzz T4i 6D1 to 5D3 i thing you'd know that stuff better than most YTers and might get more eyes to look this way maybe idk It was the metering i was reading at the time . i think if it came out that a G7 and A 5D4 was better for say reading Butlerfly colors and say a 6D1 and say a 60D read flower colors better people would want to know more. Oh AF points didn't some cameras have a double Cross center AF point or something ?
Hello. I did some tests yesterday afternoon with my Canon RP + my RF-Ef adapter ring and I used my 40mm f 2.8 stm as well as my 35 f2 is usm. And, I confirm that even with my Ef lenses, for Portraits in Jpeg it smoothes faces a lot! Is there some other way or setting of the device to keep it from getting too smooth? On the other hand of course I did not have this problem on the RAW, but here the RAW of my RP I find them less beautiful than what I had with my 6D Mark II, yet they have the same sensor, is this normal ! Thank you in advance for your answers, Sincerely, Philgood ...
I suspect there is a setting in the menu to reduce that smoothing effect. I typically turn off everything like High ISO noise reduction, etc... as I don't want any of that. I don't own an RP, so I can't go into the menus for you, but I would go through the menu settings and turn off all of those type settings and see if that doesn't help. I also choose the "Fine Detail" option for picture settings.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you very much for your answer. I haven't enabled a lot of settings, but I will recheck. And yes I too in principle for the Picture Style I select "Fine detail" which I also did on my 6D Mark II. On the other hand, I don't understand why the Raw of this RP seem less beautiful to me, more contrasted than the Raw of my 6D Mark II ? Sincerely, Philgood ...
@@DustinAbbottTWI Sorry this is for me. In fact I just found to adjust the Sharpness! You have to go to the Image Style, then go into it and there you can adjust the strength etc. But it is not in the traditional menus, you have to do it in shooting mode and press the "Q" key! I have just redone a few attempts at portraits and there it is already better! Yesssssss
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks a lot for your answers. now I'll do some more testing adjusting the sharpness settings to find the ones that work best for the Portraits. I never work in P.A.S. Modes, only in Manual. Sincerely, Philgood ...
Will focus reset when the camera RP is shut down (not at all good in a studio setup). The 50 mm stm does (on my 6d2 but no other lens does other than the M-system) rendering it unuseable.
That's probably lens specific. In the case of the 50mm, it is actually retracting to its "safest" storage/transport position, so that won't be necessary for most internally focusing lenses.
Dustin, I just bought the Canon EOS RP. What perceptional Megapixels can I get with 24-105 RF lens compared to the EOS R 30 megapixel same lens? Gary R.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you for the immediate response. DXomark shows about 21 perpetual MPs down from the 26 MP sensor. Not sure if 4 MPs is worth the $1000 difference. Thank you again, fine job on your comments.
Hi Dustin, many thanks for your review! I have both cameras, the Canon RP and the Nikon Z6. So the Canon RP is better for travel and my old EF lenses whereas the Nikon Z6 is better suited for high contrast or dim light situations as well as for video work? Best wishes, Magnetron
I really want to hear your opinion on this Dustin. RF 24-105 F4 vs Tamron 24-70 F2.8 G2 (use with adapter) for the same price. Which would you pick if you could only choose one? Consider IQ, IS (I do a bit of video as well), CA, color/3D rendering... For bokeh, is it really different from F4 -> F2.8? Currently I'm using this RP + Sigma 50mm F1.4, but it really feels not wide enough sometimes and I mostly shoot from F2.8 -> F6. Therefore, I want to get a lens that does it all for everyday shoot. Thanks heaps!
I'm not a fan of mirrorless. I have large hands. They are just too small for me. Not liking the battery life either. I prefer my big work horse 5D mark 4. And my 6D mark 1 as my backup. Great review as always!
I'd like to see at least someone experiment with a DSLR-sized body with mirrorless component. Going smaller isn't always the solution, particularly when full frame cameras still require large lenses.
As a landscape photographer who carries gear hiking, I have wanted a mirrorless camera with FF sensor with super sharp lenses that are not huge like the R series are. For the first time since 1998, I am actually considering moving to Nikon and selling my Canon gear. It makes no sense to me to have smaller lighter mirrorless bodies that are then paired to the largest lenses I have seen, such as those with the R mount lenses.
That's a legitimate criticism, though, to be fair, the 24-105 and 70-200 zooms are considerably smaller than their counterparts. They haven't announced many compact primes, though.
I have the EOS R and the RP. I mainly shoot photos over videos. Coming from 2 5D mark iii's and I have no regrets selling them. For my personal use I was getting the RP for the price point and was not expecting to have the performance as a EOS R competitors in that level. The RP is currently my walk around/backup camera. The RP is consider as a BEGINNERS/BUDGET full frame camera! One major drawback for me is the BATTERY lol! Thanks again for your unbiased review as always.
I bought RP and got to say I love it, now it have great eye-af and af in general with fw1.3 - such a great camera for such a low price ;) btw - great review as always, you got it at point as I was also torn between R and RP - R does have bigger and better evf and lcd and DP in 4k but it is also almost double the price and it is not by far "double better" camera so to me and probably a lot other RP is just what we need ;)
That's fair. I'm really glad to see Canon fixing things via firmware fairly aggressively. It's made me more open to the idea of adding an EOS R to my kit.
Why does the smoke always find you when you sit round a fire? Going to stick with my M5 and M3 with adapted lenses. I find that they are both adequate for an amateur.
Dustin. Is the R worth the 700$ premium over the Rp? I need a general purpose camera and have been waiting for your opinion before pulling the trigger.
Hi, it's hard for me to make that call for you. The biggest reasons I would choose the R over the RP is the improved sensor, more robust video performance, better screen and viewfinder, and improved battery life. You'll have to decide whether those features are worth the money to you.
Again, maybe, maybe not. It would depend on what I wanted it for. I personally own half a dozen cameras, so I might consider an RP just for access to the system, but the R is the more complete camera.
To me the perfect camera would be EOS R with IBIS and maybe a couple of improved professional video features! R with ibis and weather sealing would be its little brother. Thank you again for another great review!
I haven't tested the 90D, but they are two very different kinds of cameras with different strengths. I think you need to make your decision based on what system/mount you want to buy into.
Hi Dustin, really appreciate your honest and factual reviews. I have quite a few Canon lenses that I was using on my Canon 7D ii and I also have a Canon 50mm F1.2 L lens which was a slight telephoto on the 7D ii.. In order to use that lens I found I had to seriously adjust the back focussing adjustment on my 7D ii to get a decent hit rate. In the end, I decided to get the EOS RP. I am not bothered about video, being a stills photographer, and I have to tell you the autofocussing on the RP is absolutely spot on with my 50mm F1.2 L. The rendering of this lens on the RP is so nice, it was always not quite there on the 7D ii. I was thinking of getting a 5D iv but didn't want the weight so I made the choice for the EOS RP and I couldn't be happier with the results. There is only one thing that I don't like about it, and that is the position of the AF-ON button. It's too far to the right and I can't get used to it because of the smallness of the body making my thumb always being in the wrong place. I might buy the grip to improve things. As for the sensor noise issue, because I was a m4/3 shooter I always try and expose to the right so if there is noise from the sensor I haven't noticed any, it's far less than M4/3. Thanks for the review, I am so happy with the results from the EOS RP.
Hey Dustin, Thanks for the video and going the extra mile for detail. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the Canon M50 mirrorless APS-C Camera, but I’ve been using it for about a year and half now as a beginner. I wanted to up my game a bit by getting a Full Frame camera, and future proofing my self with the RF line. Do you think the Canon RP is worth it? Is there much of a difference as far the sensor goes, or should I go another route? Thanks Again. God Bless!
Hi there, the RP is a fun camera with some serious limitations. If you want a camera with much fewer limitations, saving a bit longer and going for the R6 is worth it in my opinion...or going for the EOS R, which is pretty seriously discounted now and is more complete than the RP.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Hopefully you were not just blowin' smoke! ;) A couple months ago I saw the camera and short zoom for $999. Now that is a bargain for a FF. And yep, Canon is not known for dynamic range, so one must be a little more careful to get it right --- shoot over and under when possible on important shots. Or use bracketing -- I assume it to have. Yes, I am 9 mo late in seeing this, but when I saw something about RP, I clicked on it. Canon is made in Japan and lens in Taiwan, which is good to see -- freedom countries and supporting homeland jobs for Japan -- way to go!
Hey Dustin,The RP has almost the same price as the XT3 here in the UK. Being almost same megapixels as the XT3 do you think the image quality is better on the canon compare to XT3 and also high ISO performance?
Look at the lenses and decide what system you like better. Fuji has a very robust system. Image quality doesn't necessarily favor the Canon, though high ISO performance does. The X-T3 has a much more robust burst rate and is more of action.
I just bought a used 5Diii but the price for the RP is quite close right now.. do you think I should sell it and get the rp? I like the flippy screen and the weight savings but I can't decide in terms of IQ. Or maybe wait for the R6 price to drop a bit haha
Ot is really nice camera both for video and pictures. I really liked size focus stacking and how video looked like straight from the camera. Would consider it for sure if i am not already heavy invested in Sony. Prefered usability of this camera over my a7riii.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I think that Canon did nice compromise of features size and price. Most people are not pushing or pulling their files that heavy anyway and i bet they will be more then happy with video as well. You and i ppl like us are minority but i think that there is plenty of fun in this camera for nerds like us too....
Hey Dustin, I know you recommend this camera over the 6DII. My question is does this camera have 4k time-lapse? And if so, is it the same or better than 6DII. The main reason I'm even looking at the 6DII is because of the 4k time-lapse. I have the 5Ds and it can only do them at 1080 unless I want to spend hours of post-processing creating the time-lapses from images, which is what I do now and I find myself not doing as many as I want because of the time involved. Anyway, keep up the great work, brother!
Hi Mark, I would personally choose the RP over the 6DII above all for the vastly improved focus system. Yes, you can do 4K timelapse with a fair number of options.
Hi Dustin, as a fellow 6D Mk 1 user back in the day, how would you say the RP compares to it? I love the IQ of my 6D, the reason for thinking about upgrading is simply my frustration with the limited autofocus capabilities. Thanks for another excellent and informative review.
I think it is a reasonable upgrade, actually. Not because the sensor is much better (it's not), but the overall shooting experience is better. The AF system is far and away better on the RP.
Great final verdict Dustin! However, I am sorry you didn't mention the limitation of "silent shutter" mode of EOS RP. "Silent shutter" is one of strength function in mirrorless system should be able to change in PASM mode. However, Canon RP can't do that...
@dustin thank you again for the honest review. Now I am struggling for a long time already. I have the Fujifilm x-H1 with the XF90mm and xf56 - great lenses. But would like to step up and do portraits on FF (especially with sigma 35mm 1.4 ART). Is the RP image quality good enough for stunning portraits or would your rather recommend the a7 iii ? I would rather not go Sony because of the legendary canon 135mm f2 L and 85mm 1.2 L. I just don’t know which camera is right for me (save money and RP is good enough for portraits with some color grading afterwards or invest more in the a7 iii but maybe being disappointed by Sony Glass, menu and color science). Hopefully you can give me any kind of answer - thank you in advance
Hi! I am a lover of Canon colors too! But I have finally made the switch to Sony A7III and have been using the Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM with Sigma MC-11. I can honestly tell you, there is a difference in the colors between 6D and A7III, the A7III has colder rendering. However, the 135mm lens has its own rendering of colors, which makes my photos soothing too! If you are considering the switch, just get the A7III and keep using Canon lenses. The most recent firmware update from Sony is very good, makes Canon lenses act like native, and you will love the real-tracking Eye AF.
Abu Sufian Mohammad Asib thank you for your honest opinion! A friend of mine has the Sony, I guess I will get the lens first and try with his camera. Or maybe search the internet for raw files of this combination. It’s very very tough these days to get the “right” camera. Could tell me maybe, if the eye-af keeps up when model is running towards with mc 11 and canon 135?
Another brilliant video Dustin, now that my beloved 7D MK1 is showing it’s age and weight in my kitbag with my other lenses & 5D MKIII, I am seriously considering going mirrorless as a back up to my 5D, but also for zoos, wildlife parks, macro & of course holidays. Now without extreme spending, would you say that the RP is ideal for what I want to use with current glass like 70-200 MKII, 100mm 2.8L, Tamron 100-400, Tamron 24-70 G2, Samyang 14mm, as well as my Kenko Teleconverters & tubes ?. Many thanks.
Dustin Abbott thank you, I was originally considering a APS-C Mirrorless but figured that Full Frame would be better, so was thinking either the RP or the Sony AR series.
Hi. Thanks for the video. Question. I want to buy either the R or RP. Budget I can buy the RP with the lens or R without the lens (RF24 - 105). Both comes with the adapter. I am leaning towards the RP to get the lens with, but I have 5 Canon lenses including the EF 24 - 105 f3.5 lens. Your advice would be appreciated.
I think that depends on your priorities. The R is the more complete camera and has the better sensor, and you could easily use your existing lenses via the adapter. If it will be your primary camera, I would probably recommend going with the R.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Sorry, I mean in general. I heard RP supposedly works with Simgas lens. I have 85mm Art and just brought RP(on the way). I'm still kind of nervous what if it doesn't work well haha
Hey Dustin , cool video as always. How is the video bit rate on the RP ? is it the same as on the R ( in 4k the R has almost 5 times more data then the Sony has, and in 1080p over 3 times more) ? actually I find the R to be the best 1080p hybrid video camera, if the RP is the same then it's a big plus. What about the RAW file sizes compared to the R? And how is the sensor stack on this compared to the R? as good in producing tonal details & deep color gradations? I find the R to be a great camera , if the RP is close then it's a damn fine option.
The RP unfortunately takes a step back on the video front, though it is still pretty good at 1080P. Read my text review for more analysis on all your questions.
Sir love you unbiased reviews. I’m a still photographer only and a m43 user. I’m trying to decide between the RP and Sony A7mark 2 . As per you which would serve me better as I shoot Portraits, food and l lifestyle. Not much of a landscape mode photographer. Your advice will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance
G Westerneng i dont hear people buying rf glass for the rp except the kit lens. Are the images that come out of the rp exactly the same as the eos r with the same lens?
@@DustinAbbottTWI Hmm... I read from multiple sources that 1080P is disabled on RP when EF-S lenses are mounted. For examples, fstoppers.com/gear/why-canon-eos-rp-sucks-video-341404 However I don't know if they disable 1080P crop video mode for EF lenses as well. The reason I ask is I want to use my Sigma 18-35 1.8 to shoot 1080P on RP.
It was filmed on an a7R3, which is usually pretty solid. I think the smoke drifting across the scene is actually the problem...and yes, I suspect Canon would have had a similar issue.
An excellent unbiased review good job. I certainly don't consider the RP wish Canon would do something more pro as good as the A7 series or my favourite A9. cheers.
I have so enjoyed your unbiased, unspun reviews, thanks! As one who just returned his RP due to the sensor, would you mind doing a true A/B test between the A7III and the EOS R? I've watched all your videos on these and what I'm really trying to determine is a blend between ecosystems and ease of use with technical prowess. Cost is a factor and the availability of inexpensive used EF Canon lenses is as compelling as is the variable screen and IBIS. So specific questions (If you have the time... or anyone else). 1. Is there a viable vlogging work around for the flip screen with the Sony (such as Canon's CanaonConnect App)? 2. Is the A7III EVF on par with the RP? (The RP was good enough for me). 3. How much effort does Sony post require with the difference in color? I actually prefer cooler, higher contrast, saturated finals. 4. How easy is it to alter OOC Jpegs in Sony like Canon's profile settings (Standard, Landscape, etc.). Thanks for the help!
Hi Chad, I'm afraid what you are asking for isn't really possible. I've thoroughly reviewed both of those cameras already, and my review schedule is already booked solid months in advance.
Well, the important thing is that you have never blown smoke in your careful reviews. I intend to buy the RP since I have a number of EF lenses. I shoot mostly stills. The low price-point and light weight are irresistible. (That's why I like the RP better than the R and the Sony A7III.) And I do believe in the benefits of EVF. In time I might succumb and buy the R 24-240. Thanks for the report!
Dustin Abbott hopefully! It came out in March of 2019...so i am not holding my breath for an update anytime soon. But i am looking forward to when they do. I think Canon has a real winner with such an affordable compact FF mirrorless camera. It could be the go to camera for travel vlogging.
Shooting Canon for near 15 years. From a XT to pro FF bodies and lenses. I kept my Canon family and added a SONY A7iii... one year's use lead to the in-body image stabilizing sensor failing, rendering it useless until I sent it off to get fixed (all good now). I adapted EF lenses and just don't like the system and the results... the learning curve was obnoxious. I often fall back to my Canon rigs for critical work and still yet keep the A7iii around for sports. I bought a RP and like it way better than the A7iii with exceptions. Both focus fast and are responsive. They have some similarities as mirrorless cameras with great new features and the SONY is just flat out better for video... but I am a stills shooter. RP is better to handle physically... the grip is deeper and the touch screen and menu is better thought out than the SONY (gripped too). RP images are BETTER for my taste than the A7iii (the A7iii does win with low light high ISO though). SONY wins at frame rate, ability to switch to crop mode on the fly, silent shutter mode, High ISO performance, battery life, ports for the cards door/battery/and other hookups/USB charging. With the RP I have had issue with the HSS on 3rd party strobes (GODOX/FLASHPOINT) black banding from the shutter curtain and bright striping over 1/500s. I'm still trying to sort that out hoping a firmware update will fix all of that like it did the EOS R.
I tried this camera out for a day with the 35mm f 1.8Rf lens and for people walking by or barely moving I was getting mostly unsharp results. It was very disappointing. It’s fine for unmoving objects. Form factor is amazing as is the touch screen to move focus. Can’t wait for the 5D mk 4 mirror less replacement.... Great vid as always!
Hi Kevin, I'm not sure what went wrong for you, but that should not be the case at all. The autofocus system is in most ways more sophisticated than that of the 5D Mark IV. Something wasn't right either with the settings of your technique, as autofocus accuracy is generally fantastic.
I’m aware the R is the Mk4 equivalent, but there most likely won’t be a 5D Mk5 dslr, it’ll be mirror less . That’s what I’m looking forward to. .. Yeah I don’t know what the problem was but it was happening while testing it in Henry’s with the help of the staff as well . I had my Mk4 with me and I was getting sharp results with it under the same conditions. .. I bought it and took it out for the day and still got soft images. Anyway, I took it back.
Great honest review! Every other reviewer sugar coats the review of this camera. I had this camera for a couple weeks and hated the sensor. Way too noisy at 100iso if you bump the shadows just a tad. I know for the price you get a weak focus system and poor video which I can deal with, but a poor sensor in 2019 is just poor on their part. It’s a shame that Canon still has poor sensors, because their new RF lenses are amazing! I sold off all my Canon gear and went with a Sony A7III. What an amazing camera that is for the money. I no longer need to bracket shots. Files are so clean, shoots fast, and video is great. Love the clean and clear colors of the new Sony files. They finally got the colors right.
@@DustinAbbottTWI one of the things you do especially well is to maintain balance and keep things within context (context of price, use cases and systems). So many other reviewers are swinging wildly positive or negative and losing credibility. With this balance in mind, it's interesting to get updates on products that I cannot buy as I'm in a different system. My guess is that your reviewing style also attracts a more balanced and less hysterical viewer ;)
I know this video was uploaded 2 years ago, but I just got my Canon EOS RP. So I'm just wondering, are you just trying to get rid of the mosquitoes or you want to preserve yourself with all that smoke? 😂
Those are some serious strong lungs and eyes with all that smoke! Subtitle should be something like "Smoking the Canon EOS RP, final review" ‘^_^ No really, Thank you so much for the honest review, it has helped greatly to take a better decision about my next purchase Cheers
Unfortunately, you keep comparing a $1,000 camera to a $2,000 camera and criticize the $1,000 camera for not being the $2,000 camera. That's like expecting a 3 series BMW to be the equivalent of a 7 series BMW.
Precisely that is important when you want to know how far you are from a better quality product. Dustin knows and does not want the RP to be better than the 5D4, but the comparison is interesting to know what capacity the RP has to offer.
I was actually pronouncing all three letters - there's some dispute over that, but typically when you have all caps, it is more of an acronym than a word.
Mh... this Canon EOS RP for 1450€ or the A7II for 850€ (including the 150 cashback) or even the A7RII for 1500€ (also including the 200 cashback) ... in my opinion this Canon doesn't stand a chance againnst any of those two last gen Sonys! ... not to mention the missing native glas for the EOS R/RP...
Hmmm, kind of hard to just a brand new system on a lack of lenses, particularly when the largest catalog of lenses on the planet works perfectly well with it via the adapters.
Detailed analysis as usual Dustin, but what possessed you to shoot across a BBQ. Very distracting. Suggestion: Shoot it again....same ananlysis.........NO Fire/BBQ.
Canon is an unethical company. I am disgusted to find out that they deliberatedly disabled full HD video for EF-S lenses. I sold the RP and every single piece of canon equipment. Disgusting company.
I don't think that Canon tried to hide that. I went to look at the listing for the RP on Canon's website, and they state that clearly. You are, of course, fully entitled to spend your money however you like, but I'm not sure you can make a claim of them being unethical.
Man gets lung cancer - live stream, lol. Not mad about it. More pixels than R6, but battery is horrendous and no proper focusing during that cropped 4k.
There's some truth to what you say, but the greater point is that we really aren't restricted by focus points any longer. You've got the whole sensor covered in them.
Your reviews are much realistic/honest when comparing with other channels. Thank you and make the great reviews in the future.
Thank you. That's certainly my goal
Take care!
Good to know that a longer term user has had similar experiences.
Finally found an unbiased and honest reviewer
Thank you for uploading this video
Subbed👍✌️
I do my best.
always enjoy your reviews, even if i dont plan on buying that camera
And that's always a high compliment to me.
With the wiltroxs adapter my canon RP makes sounds. The motors in the lens run loudly ten seconds after I take the picture.
You don't mention what lens you are using, which is relevant, but that sounds like a matter to take up with Viltrox.
It's a lovely upgrade from the SL2, for sure.
That's correct.
Interesting anecdotal feedback. I can't say I agree on the nature of the screen, but if you never shoot in vertical position....
I agree other than the no HD comment. It has a number of full HD options from 24FPS, 30 FPS, and 60FPS.
Thanks a lot for your interesting review 👍
My pleasure!
Fascinating. Detailed, useful review, as usual. No one else seems to have mentioned a lot of the things you picked up on such as the sensor quality difference (R vs RP). Thanks!
You're welcome.
Hello, Dustin, or anybody there who can answer this question. Please help me to decide between Canon EOS RP and Sony A7ii. I take stills and some video. One thing that bothers me about Canon, is that there is no image stabilizaton. Thank you all.
That’s true. The RP has nicer ergonomics and focus, but the a7II does have IBIS.
Thank you for the review. I was waiting for your final verdict👍
Glad to help out.
Would a 24mp full frame camera capture more detail than an 24mp apsc camera? Ik that full frame is better in low light.
More detail - not necessarily. But full frame captures a smoother gradation of color and light and delivers IQ that I personally prefer.
Dustin Abbott THANK YOU!
The EOS RP is the most compromised of Canon's full frame mirrorless options. It would be nice if you could get the EOS R or R8 instead.
Canon r ? Canon rp )Welche Kamera für Fotos kaufen?
At 10:20 Does it work with STM tho ?
The idea of bad low light banding still bugs me tho. like say holiday lights typo of shots.
STM is simply a type of focus motor. I was testing on an STM lens (RF 35mm). So no DPAF at 4K regardless of focus motor in the lens.
Thank you in advance for your answers,
Sincerely,
Philgood ...
Sincerely,
Philgood ...
Yesssssss
I'm glad you've sorted things out.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks a lot for your answers. now I'll do some more testing adjusting the sharpness settings to find the ones that work best for the Portraits. I never work in P.A.S. Modes, only in Manual.
Sincerely,
Philgood ...
Would this a good upgrade from t7i?
I think so, but I prefer full frame over APS-C
Will focus reset when the camera RP is shut down (not at all good in a studio setup).
The 50 mm stm does (on my 6d2 but no other lens does other than the M-system) rendering it unuseable.
That's probably lens specific. In the case of the 50mm, it is actually retracting to its "safest" storage/transport position, so that won't be necessary for most internally focusing lenses.
Thank You
Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts, always appreciate it.
My pleasure.
Dustin, I just bought the Canon EOS RP. What perceptional Megapixels can I get with 24-105 RF lens compared to the EOS R 30 megapixel same lens? Gary R.
I think the lens is capable of resolving the full sensor, so roughly the same difference in the megapixel rating of the camera.
If that's a question, it's not one that I can answer. I don't cover Nikon and don't have any opinion on the Z6.
There are no better reviews than yours on UA-cam.
That's kind. Thank you.
I would probably go with the RF lens if you don't feel you need the F2.8. The RF 24-105 is perhaps the best of its kind.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for your reply! The RF optic seems absolutely amazing
Hey just want to ask at the end the photos of what appears to be a hotel that looks a lot like the hotel that was in the Shining
Are you asking if it is that hotel? I wouldn’t actually know.
Dustin Abbott That’s OK I’m just curious is this in or near Portland by chance?
Not for this review. I have shot some in Portland.
What about someone that has a Rebel T2i that is looking at a Rebel T7i or the EOS RP?
I personally would go RP. I think most of Canon's development is going into mirrorless right now.
I'm not a fan of mirrorless. I have large hands. They are just too small for me. Not liking the battery life either. I prefer my big work horse 5D mark 4. And my 6D mark 1 as my backup. Great review as always!
I know what you're saying, though the RP is better than most.
@@DustinAbbottTWI that's what it definitely looks like it. Maybe I'll check out how mirrorless go down the road.
I'd like to see at least someone experiment with a DSLR-sized body with mirrorless component. Going smaller isn't always the solution, particularly when full frame cameras still require large lenses.
@@DustinAbbottTWI that would be great. Hopefully that happens.
The EOS R grip is very similar to the 5D iv and the RP can be comfortable as well with the extension grip.
They haven't announced many compact primes, though.
well Canon 70-200mm 2,8f R that they announced not so long ago is smallest design 70-200mm lens.
Is the EOS RP still missing 24fps for video? This is important for cinematic video.
The only 24FPS option is in 4K, but unfortunately you lose DPAF focus as a part of that transition.
My pleasure
I’m about to get the a7r ii, but before I get it, is there any more high res cameras at the same price or lower?
Not that I'm aware of.
I bought RP and got to say I love it, now it have great eye-af and af in general with fw1.3 - such a great camera for such a low price ;)
btw - great review as always, you got it at point as I was also torn between R and RP - R does have bigger and better evf and lcd and DP in 4k but it is also almost double the price and it is not by far "double better" camera so to me and probably a lot other RP is just what we need ;)
Isn't that the truth (re: smoke)
Best review by miles!
Thank you very much!
Great job! I was surprised by the af noise when pulling focus on chessboard. Disappointing considering you had a native and modern lens.
It's true, though that's more on the lens than the camera.
Dustin Abbott and I guess it was a very silent environment. thanks for replying.
I thought i was the only one
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks. I guess you would pay the extra bucks for the R?
Again, maybe, maybe not. It would depend on what I wanted it for. I personally own half a dozen cameras, so I might consider an RP just for access to the system, but the R is the more complete camera.
To me the perfect camera would be EOS R with IBIS and maybe a couple of improved professional video features! R with ibis and weather sealing would be its little brother. Thank you again for another great review!
I was looking for Canon 90D, but now it's Canon Eos RP. Better quality pictures I believe?
Thanks for an in-depth review!
Blessings. 🤗🇩🇰
The advantage of getting your lenses to properly focus is SUCH a huge advantage for mirrorless!
@@DustinAbbottTWI That makes sense, I guess I can make do with The M50 a little longer. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
How are you reviewing images? I can’t get RAW files to open on my MAC. No one has support for the CR3 raw files.
Really? I'm having no issues in Lightroom
thanks for the smokey review
LOL - it didn't quite work out as planned.
The R6 is the best choice, for sure, but I personally would choose an RP over a 5DIII.
@@DustinAbbottTWI oh really? Hmm maybe I should sell the mark iii..
Ot is really nice camera both for video and pictures. I really liked size focus stacking and how video looked like straight from the camera. Would consider it for sure if i am not already heavy invested in Sony. Prefered usability of this camera over my a7riii.
It really does handle nicely. I just wish the sensor was more competitive (along with the video codecs)
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you :)
Great final verdict Dustin! However, I am sorry you didn't mention the limitation of "silent shutter" mode of EOS RP. "Silent shutter" is one of strength function in mirrorless system should be able to change in PASM mode. However, Canon RP can't do that...
It's hard to cover everything in a camera system in 15 minutes, but that is a valid point.
@@framed-tales , how does A7 iii autofucs performs in video with canon lenses...i am also torn between RP and A7iii...please suggest
@@ghufran2668 Hi.... I haven't tried doing video with any Canon lenses on the A7iii. So cannot say anything. But I think the MC-11 works fine.
@@framed-tales , can you please do a small test, and tell us?
The RP is a nice pick for non-action work. It looks like the R5 (sure to be expensive) will the first real action mirrorless camera from Canon
Dustin Abbott thank you, I was originally considering a APS-C Mirrorless but figured that Full Frame would be better, so was thinking either the RP or the Sony AR series.
Once again, thanks for the great verdict !
My pleasure.
You are a hero, sitting in the smoke like that
LOL - stupid, I think
Can you do a RP review with all the 3rd party lens?
All? Thats dozens of lenses. I'm afraid not.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Sorry, I mean in general. I heard RP supposedly works with Simgas lens. I have 85mm Art and just brought RP(on the way). I'm still kind of nervous what if it doesn't work well haha
Ahh, I've actually thoroughly covered that in my text review. The Sigma lenses work perfectly (better even than DSLR as focus is better).

@@DustinAbbottTWI another question: What kind of a bird is that in your area? the big one on the ground at the end of the video. Turkey?
Yes. We have a lot of turkeys.
What happened to all the snow? 😋😊
It finally melted about 3 weeks before I shot this episode.
The A7II has a better sensor, but the RP has better handling and autofocus. As long as video isn't a big priority, I think I would go RP
Thanks very much
@@ravirajkande7568 which model did u buy and how has been the experience ?
Its about the glas glas glas... glas! That's what makes the RP interesting (RF lenses).
That's definitely the exciting (and expensive) part of the R system thus far.
G Westerneng i dont hear people buying rf glass for the rp except the kit lens. Are the images that come out of the rp exactly the same as the eos r with the same lens?
Thanks for the review! Is 1080P disabled only for EF-S lenses or EF lenses in manual crop mode as well?
I don't think 1080P is disabled for either.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Hmm... I read from multiple sources that 1080P is disabled on RP when EF-S lenses are mounted. For examples, fstoppers.com/gear/why-canon-eos-rp-sucks-video-341404
However I don't know if they disable 1080P crop video mode for EF lenses as well. The reason I ask is I want to use my Sigma 18-35 1.8 to shoot 1080P on RP.
Interesting. I never ran into that, though, I suspect the Sigma 18-35 might behave differently because it actually has an EF mount.
RP or 6D Mii?
For me definitely RP
Thank you. Your reviews and videos are second to none
Thank you for a honest and fair review.
Can you film in PAL 25fps 4k and 60fps 1080 Full HD in the USA ?
Yes to both of those.
@@DustinAbbottTWI cool thank you
Was this filmed on the A7RIII? I am not impressed by how the rectangular plant "pot" thingy goes in and out of focus. Do Canons have the same issue?
It was filmed on an a7R3, which is usually pretty solid. I think the smoke drifting across the scene is actually the problem...and yes, I suspect Canon would have had a similar issue.
I am glad that I am not interested in 4K, as my video's are for me and family.
Then it works for you!
Yup. Same here. I'd rather have some solid 1080p than mediocre 4k.
Thanks Dustin.
You're welcome!
Good review, albeit distracting smokes coming from fire pit!
Yes, filming next to that fire did not go well for me!
An excellent unbiased review good job. I certainly don't consider the RP wish Canon would do something more pro as good as the A7 series or my favourite A9. cheers.
We'll see what Canon's next round offers. The RP is fun, but it doesn't hold up in a number of areas compared to competitors.
Shut up sony fanboi
Well you have R5 now , much better than A9II
Dustin AbbottI have no doubt, worth asking though. Thanks for the response.
nice smoke effect
LOL - that didn’t go well!
Great Video. But seriously, that smoke must’ve hurt 😞
LOL - that setup really didn't work out the way I hoped.
not sure about the setting....
Blowing smoke? ;-)
It didn't work as well as what I would like. The smoke kept blowing across the scene. The outdoors are...unpredictable.
If Canon fixes the 4k video issues(crop & lack of dual pixel auto focus) the EOS RP would be the perfect travel/vlogging camera.
That won't happen on this camera, but it might on a future replacement of it.
Dustin Abbott hopefully! It came out in March of 2019...so i am not holding my breath for an update anytime soon. But i am looking forward to when they do. I think Canon has a real winner with such an affordable compact FF mirrorless camera. It could be the go to camera for travel vlogging.
I have no clue why he sat in the smoke for straight half an hour. Nice Verdict by the way.
LOL - you and me both!
Fair enough. I've had no physical issues with my a7RIII after two years. But yes, different people prioritize different things.
EOS R is the mirriorless version of the 5D iv
Anyway, I took it back.
would the IQ of this camera be better than the DSLR APC-S Nikon 5600?
I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the D5600 (I'm not a Nikon shooter).
Same boat here... So close Canon! I ended up returning mine and am now back to the EOS R vs. A7III quandary :D.
Can't disagree. There's a lot of good with the RP and the R, and other areas where they just aren't competitive with the market.
Chad Cohoon what do you shoot? That’s the most important part.
@@ryanb8736 Americana landscapes (Montana, Yellowstone), and my 6 fast kids :D.
I thought you cleared THE SMOKE well, of Canon qualities.
LOL. Very punny
I just came for smoke jokes
As always, wonderful review. Even when I have committed to an alternative and have no interest in this new system. Thanks Dustin.
These comments are the most flattering. I'm glad that people find my reportage engaging enough to watch even when they have no stake in the outcome.
That's probably true. My channel growth is more gradual as well, but does grow consistently.
I know this video was uploaded 2 years ago, but I just got my Canon EOS RP. So I'm just wondering, are you just trying to get rid of the mosquitoes or you want to preserve yourself with all that smoke? 😂
That was an idea that did NOT pan out!
Final? 🤔 Time to judge it again! 2 firmware updates has been released since you tried it.
I've done a second EOS R video, but I can't recover everything that gets a firmware update. Too much else to cover!
@@DustinAbbottTWI rp 😉
Those are some serious strong lungs and eyes with all that smoke!
Subtitle should be something like "Smoking the Canon EOS RP, final review" ‘^_^
No really, Thank you so much for the honest review, it has helped greatly to take a better decision about my next purchase
Cheers
Yes - that setting did not work out as planned!
Thank you, this was a great review of this not so great of a camera.
LOL. Glad to help out.
Unfortunately, you keep comparing a $1,000 camera to a $2,000 camera and criticize the $1,000 camera for not being the $2,000 camera. That's like expecting a 3 series BMW to be the equivalent of a 7 series BMW.
Except for all the ways I praised the $1000 camera for doing certain things better.
Precisely that is important when you want to know how far you are from a better quality product. Dustin knows and does not want the RP to be better than the 5D4, but the comparison is interesting to know what capacity the RP has to offer.
You sound like you could be a preacher or a inspirational speaker
That's because I'm a pastor.
i often respect DA's opinons and vids but this he just drooled on. i thought he nit-picked some really minor details. sadly, unimpressed.
This is an indictment without specifics. What specifically did I miss in your opinion?
I'm distracted by the pronunciation of EOS here. I've never heard anyone say "ee-ahce"--always "ee-oce" until today.
I was actually pronouncing all three letters - there's some dispute over that, but typically when you have all caps, it is more of an acronym than a word.
I think u burn that burger already😥😍
LOL. I agree :)
Mh... this Canon EOS RP for 1450€ or the A7II for 850€ (including the 150 cashback) or even the A7RII for 1500€ (also including the 200 cashback) ... in my opinion this Canon doesn't stand a chance againnst any of those two last gen Sonys!
... not to mention the missing native glas for the EOS R/RP...
Hmmm, kind of hard to just a brand new system on a lack of lenses, particularly when the largest catalog of lenses on the planet works perfectly well with it via the adapters.
I think Dustin has at thing for fires...
I do, actually, but that might be a symptom of living in one of the coldest countries in the world :)
I added a like for the final value for money comments..
Thanks ;)
Detailed analysis as usual Dustin, but what possessed you to shoot across a BBQ. Very distracting. Suggestion: Shoot it again....same ananlysis.........NO Fire/BBQ.
That's a fire pit, actually. And yes, the concept didn't work as well as what I wanted due to the wind.
Dustin Abbott Not to worry Dustin. Keep reviewing. I really enjoy and respect your detailed analysis. Cheers.
I have got to say that shooting this vlog in front of a smoky fire was really distracting, so much so, that I bailed after 4 minutes.
I get it. I wanted the vibe of a crackling fire, and got smoke blowing in my face instead.
Dustin Abbott lol. I loved the smoke. Wanted to get my marshmallows!!
LOL - that's not far from the truth.
@@DustinAbbottTWI well we all hope you are in good health.
4000.00 focus points.. Ha ha no sorry that is marketing.
There's some truth to what you say, but the greater point is that we really aren't restricted by focus points any longer. You've got the whole sensor covered in them.
Pls do not produce anymore video with smoke .. terrible
Not really in my plans. It didn't work out like I hoped.
Thanks Dustin.
You're welcome.
