Social media leads people to stay inside and have only online connections, which leads to depression and anxiety. Combined with unrealistic goals relating to bodies, travel, relationships etc. I personally don't think social media should be a thing. The "benefits" do not out way the cons of it.
@@TheNewblade1 what are u even talking about?! You live in the middle of nowhere with nobody around?? If you live around others you can sit in the grass and be social with others

@@TheNewblade1those places exist. But people don't care to go anymore cause of their phones. People stop going to the mall cause they can just shop on the internet😂
“Nobody uses social media more than someone who hates their job” is a very convenient excuse for over using social media as “my job sucks” is the most common human complaint ever.
I was chronically online. I had alot of followers and interactions, which led me to believe I had alot friends. In reality I was super lonely and those connections were superficial. I deleted my IG and now I have a small group of friends. Couldn't be happier and more fulfilled
Love this for you boo. Social media gives many of us the false perception that likes and comments on photos from followers equates to friendships irl which couldn’t be further from the truth. I’d rather have a small group of genuine friends than the false sense of community that social media can bring.
I don’t have children, but if I did, I would very much want them to be outdoors, imaginative, exploratory! Not bed rotting scrolling on social media outlets.
tbh i don't consider UA-cam to be social media and I was surprised that nobody said they got most of their news from UA-cam. I watch youtubers/tiktokers i trust not just any random person that comes on my FYP.
I was thinking the same thing lol as a creator I can see why he'd interpret it that way. as a viewer, though, even if you comment most of them go unnoticed, I don't think there's much of a social aspect to it for a lot of users
i , as an autistic teenager , have found that social media or movies ect. has helped me regulate my emotions and i learn from social media about how to do things and how to address people and so on ... i can definetely see the negatives but it has helped me so much , and honestly i wouldnt be here today without it
This is true. I have learned so much psychology or therapy techniques through social media. It definitely has its benefits, but everything in moderation. Also, not everyone's social media feeds are beneficial to their mental or physical wellbeing all of the time
same! every time ive had a question about whether an emotion i had or a reaction i had was normal/acceptable i would google it or ask reddit (more so when i was younger) and its helped me grow so much as a person.
Unpopular opinion (maybe popular): People don’t need to be as aware of everything happening in the world as they are. Nobody needs to know who’s being k!lled, what country is attacked what country, whose being arrested, who got captured, etc. NOBODY. needs to know what’s going on in the world all the time every single day.
Yes. Humans are not meant to hear so much bad news all day everyday. This is a mostly new thing, honestly, because of social media. For a long time, people only focused on their local communities and maybe the country if they heard news from word of mouth or the papers. Now our minds are filled with so much doom all the time over stressful things that we cannot do much to help with. It’s another reason why I deleted most of my social media accounts.. I’m very passionate about a lot of views and such, but as one person, I can’t solve all of the worlds problems, so why not focus on my own hobbies, family, etc. Sitting around feeling terrible about it won’t do anything except make us feel worse.
I agree to an extent but there are some things that definitely do need to be shared. Its ok if you don't care but like one of the guys said in the video the amount of activation done now adays is largely due to social media. I wand most others probably wouldn't know about Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan, the DRC, and many more.
@@matts5164 I feel like people who are obsessed with knowing every social issue are actually very privileged. They have the time to worry about these things, while people like me and the average person have everyday problems to deal with.
@@f0rxp3rt36 To an extent yeah social media is a great way to raise awareness, but there are definitely people out there who will shame you for not knowing or caring about those issues. Like, sorry, I don’t have time to get involved when I’m busy trying to pay rent or just take care of myself.
I keep my phone notifications to a minimum, only allowing FaceTime and phone calls to come through. Everything else-texts, news, social media-I check on my own terms. The central issue at hand is that individuals who struggle with addiction need to confront that challenge directly. This isn't just about the Internet; it's fundamentally about addressing addiction in a broader sense.
I hate the excuse of it’s the parents job to parent so we shouldn’t put laws on social media bc it’ll get rid of the accountability of the parents. But to me, they already aren’t parenting their kids that’s how we got here ! That part is not going to change and just get worse
It’s true that there will always be crappy parents and rebellious kids who will find ways to do what they want, regardless of rules. But law-makers need to still try. The way these massive tech companies are allowed to just take whatever information they want from you and sell it to the highest bidder or use it to train their AIs or otherwise invade your privacy - it’s insidious. Tech gives way too much power to the producer and not enough to the consumer.
Yeah, idk if it’s true but I heard that weird stuff was happening in their company or whatever. They’re probably just taking the sponsorship for money and don’t care or just don’t know about the allegations they’re in
I feel like we as humans were never meant to know and be able to hear everyone's opinions. So many people on social media seem to have a "main character" mentality and lack the introspection to see the flaws in their behaviour. Especially since the pandemic, people in general seem much more entitled to everything and are unable to take opposing opinions or criticism into consideration. This is made worse by the echo chamber that is created on their social media feed based on what they engage with.
So did I, also in 2019 after graduating from school. Sadly I‘m still very much addicted to you tube, TV, endless internet searching, world and sports news…the consumption is taking up my life. Human beings have to create something of value though to be fulfilled.
Why is there not a mix of ages for this? It would have been interesting hearing the different perspectives. I personally first used social media when I was 14. This was back in 2008 and I used Bebo and Facebook and even dabbled in MySpace lol. I had used computers since I was a kid but social media was a new concept. Not like it is today where kids have grown up with it and it's just a normal part of day to day life. I miss how the internet used to be honestly. Social media has ruined everything for the worst, I truly believe this. Defending it because it's your line of work isn't really a solid argument.
Why are they all Gen Z? They made a mistake. You should have brought on a few millineials, Gen x and even baby boomers to see generations opinions on social media.
@ I know. That’s why it would have been much more interesting to see a whole other perspective on those generations that didn’t grow up with it vs gen a who grew up with it.
As a Gen X, I can say I used to love FB until I realized it was changing how I viewed people I was friends with back in high school, especially when politics became so dynamic. I quit FB because I'd rather remember them as how they were rather than who they are now - and i don't miss it. I don't use anything else, basically bc i just never really got into it. I made accounts, but then never used them. I have to tell my mom not to believe every post on FB and fact check before sharing. I have 4 kids of all ages from 29 to 12. None of them use social media. Not bc I said they couldn't, but bc they don't care to - they're all boys, though. They'd rather chat with their friends irl while gaming than anything else.
I take social media detoxes like 3 months out of the year. I recently decided to no longer entertain celebrity news. What matters most is the ppl close to me not the ones that will never know me
I deleted my Facebook account a couple years ago and started a new one that was more professionally focused. There’s way less drama and polarizing content, and frankly, it’s boring. UA-cam is the only social media I use regularly these days, and my mental health is significantly better for it.
Technically it should be possible to make it not just be a check box to fill, but big companies who rely on children for marketing purposes would never allow it to happen.
The one guy at 16:26 who mentioned that he struggled to make friends in school without social media is relatable. I struggled to make friends too, growing up. Struggled to talk to / connect with people. I really think that our schools need to do better to help young people work through their social anxiety. Parents need to be aware too, but school is where young people spend most of their lives. An institution that has that much influence over a young person should do better to take care of them imo.
@@joker123344 What is there to watch on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram ? I mean when Insta was created it was ment to see nice pictures that's all ; Facebook has always been about keeping in touch with your friends and family ; Twitter at the beginning was about keeping informed ; UA-cam on the contrary has always been about content that could rivalize with TV, watching music videos and post qualitative content. Ofc you'll find shitty content on YT but their view count is rubbish. The main use of UA-cam is watching documentaries, or qualitative content creators etc, while FB, Insta and X are just here so you can scroll purposelessly. UA-cam is entertainment, it can also be a tool, 2 qualities that social medias don't have and were not meant to have originally. UA-cam was almost the only platform where you could watch real long content originally. It's so different to social medias there is no arguing

Social media has made us aggressive towards each other and have negative mindsets. People are really rude to each other in comments because they’re just a person on the screen and not seen as an actual person. Social media was supposed to bring us together, but it’s dividing us really badly.

I love this. Even as an adult, I'm realizing that my whole mind has changed since I've been consistently using screens for the past 17 years. It's very sad and I'm hoping to be able to reverse those bad habits and help my brain and mental health.
I can't imagine having anything except youtube. Its like modern encyclopedia with moving pictures. Things I watch regularly are Matt's off road recovery, Eva ZuBeck, Sam Holmes sailing, Soft white underbelly, this and all kinds of building, electric and machanic videos. As for my friendships - we show up at each others houses, call each other, go out and meet new people, sing, camp, work on cars, build things. I also have a home library. Real board games. I think social media is crazy.
The problem starts with parents letting their kids have the newest iPhone and tablets and giving them free range to look at everything and anything. It is possible to pass a law to make the age limit for social media 16. Those who disagree are the content creators who rely on those kids to rot away watching their videos.
@ a tea page posted that he collab with some artist and I commented something like “how much he pay for this?” And then he dmed me saying he has connections and that I should watch my IP 😭
1. there's tutorials on twitter, tiktok, instagram, etc. 2. youtube most defiantly counts as social media because its social. the way we're commenting right now puts the 'social' in social media. most of UA-cam features put the social in social media. the subscriber button, the like button, the share button, the way anyone can post a youtube video for the entire world to see, etc.
it uses the same pathways of addiction as an addictive drug, because the social media creators got the idea to use the same methods and even ‘optimisation companies’ that vegas use so very effectively. Just with a much bigger budget and a never ending optimisation team, it’s the perfect crime as ppl struggle to find a smoking gun
What I love about social media is that every possible niche to exist has a community somewhere. I tend to find interest in a lot of different things so for me personally that’s really helpful. But, it never ends that way for me. I always find myself doomscrolling and disassociated from reality. It never finished as i intend it to, you know? Plus I hate the fact that you literally cannot talk to someone without having social media play into it. It’s so hard to actually talk to people because they are literally glued to their phones, honestly myself included sometimes. I wish that there was a day where social media just shut down and people could spend more time with their own thoughts than with others.
All these kids are part of the generation they grew up with Social Media, I feel you really need to ask the 32-40 those are the generation that would just remember before and after. Social media is an absolute hazard and many of these influencers defend it because they get something out of it.

Social media leads people to stay inside and have only online connections, which leads to depression and anxiety. Combined with unrealistic goals relating to bodies, travel, relationships etc. I personally don't think social media should be a thing. The "benefits" do not out way the cons of it.
Social media does this, or lack of free public places to go and create those connections?
Exactly!!
@@TheNewblade1 what are u even talking about?! You live in the middle of nowhere with nobody around?? If you live around others you can sit in the grass and be social with others
@@TheNewblade1 parks? the mall? A sidewalk? There’s free open spaces everywhere. I think it’s people lack of desire, since it’s more convenient to just be home on their phones.

100%
Yeah, that one dude whos a megalomaniac narcissist also has the high follower account is insufferable. Clueless and def just focused on making $
You are the hate comments the video was talking about
???
“Putting the social back in social media” honestly just sounds like Kik and we all know how that turned out
Thanks for putting yourself out there, everyone! You have no idea how much I appreciate this video. Media psychologist, here.
I don’t have children, but if I did, I would very much want them to be outdoors, imaginative, exploratory! Not bed rotting scrolling on social media outlets.

Is UA-cam considered social media? It's more like curated tv.
From Oxford: “websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.”
tbh i don't consider UA-cam to be social media and I was surprised that nobody said they got most of their news from UA-cam.
It’s a weird one cause realistically 90% of us do not use this app socially
i , as an autistic teenager , have found that social media or movies ect. has helped me regulate my emotions and i learn from social media about how to do things and how to address people and so on ... i can definetely see the negatives but it has helped me so much , and honestly i wouldnt be here today without it
same here glad you’re here!
Oh they're lying! They definitely written a mean comment before especially if they started social media as kids. 🙄
After getting a 8-5 job my screen time has obviously dropped dramatically, and honestly I’ve never felt better mentally.
Ignorance is bliss. It's okay to admit that you can't care/be aware of every major problem in the world.
Getting off of social media has genuinely helped me mentally, I always suggest it to people
I keep my phone notifications to a minimum, only allowing FaceTime and phone calls to come through.
It's also not how we do anything else in society.

@@blazenfate should people not care? Nothing has changed from their business perspective since those allegations
Lack of hobbies contributes to doom scrolling. Mentally or physically, be active! Problem solved.

Quit instagram, Facebook, everything in like 2019? One of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Internet is pretty much the worst thing that have happened to humanity.
Why are they all Gen Z? They made a mistake. You should have brought on a few millineials, Gen x and even baby boomers to see generations opinions on social media.
they havent grown up with it though...
@ I know. That’s why it would have been much more interesting to see a whole other perspective on those generations that didn’t grow up with it vs gen a who grew up with it.
@@LernerMaraboth concepts are interesting.. nothing wrong with either lol

It doesnt matter if 'kids will sneak on and lie'- there needs to be age proof before being allowed on social media. this must be enforced
Technically it should be possible to make it not just be a check box to fill, but big companies who rely on children for marketing purposes would never allow it to happen.
@ it needs to be enforced by the government
@ in our society:
industry > government
The one guy at 16:26 who mentioned that he struggled to make friends in school without social media is relatable. I struggled to make friends too, growing up. Struggled to talk to / connect with people.
I really think that our schools need to do better to help young people work through their social anxiety. Parents need to be aware too, but school is where young people spend most of their lives. An institution that has that much influence over a young person should do better to take care of them imo.

UA-cam literally fits the definition of social media. Doesn't matter how you personally see it.
@anti-baka Idk dude, most people will never post a video or a comment on UA-cam they only watch content
@@Kriss352bro people do the same thing on twitter, instagram, etc. just watch content and never post. Cmon now
@@joker123344 What is there to watch on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram ?
If you ever feel like cutting down I suggest asking someone in your house to create a screen time password for all social media apps. Helps a lot. Take this as a sign to take the first step.

Social media has made us aggressive towards each other and have negative mindsets. People are really rude to each other in comments because they’re just a person on the screen and not seen as an actual person. Social media was supposed to bring us together, but it’s dividing us really badly.

I keep forgetting that UA-cam is technically social media.
that question about hate comments: everyone is a liar sorry lol
Having a portable computer in your pocket is why it's addicting. If social media was only on PC then that would be better
I couldn’t get social media until I was 15 😭😭
I am happy none of it was around back when I was in school. I didn't even get a cellphone or computer with proper internet until 2010. The only social media I use is UA-cam, but 75% of what I watch is science based or educational.
I love this. Even as an adult, I'm realizing that my whole mind has changed since I've been consistently using screens for the past 17 years. It's very sad and I'm hoping to be able to reverse those bad habits and help my brain and mental health.
anyone remember when Facebook was just for College students? simpler times

I don't feel like UA-cam counts necessarily like a lot of social media, especially when used as an education tool for tutorials etc
1. there's tutorials on twitter, tiktok, instagram, etc.
2. youtube most defiantly counts as social media because its social. the way we're commenting right now puts the 'social' in social media. most of UA-cam features put the social in social media. the subscriber button, the like button, the share button, the way anyone can post a youtube video for the entire world to see, etc.
it uses the same pathways of addiction as an addictive drug, because the social media creators got the idea to use the same methods and even ‘optimisation companies’ that vegas use so very effectively.
Just with a much bigger budget and a never ending optimisation team, it’s the perfect crime as ppl struggle to find a smoking gun
Everyone was lying about “hate comments” everyone has I’m sure of it😂
What I love about social media is that every possible niche to exist has a community somewhere.
