    It sounds cliche to say that tone is in the fingers, but when it comes to Knopfler, it's 99% true.

      Well it is for him more than others because of his picking style and just overall hand-skill.

    Mark Knopfler is THE reason I picked up the guitar as a kid, and even now in my 30's still makes me want to work even harder on my finger picking technique, still prefer a plectrum. Love the video guys.

    He didn't work in the shop... he was visiting the shop, in New York, and overheard one of the staff watching MTV and saying those iconic lines. He tells the tale on a Parkinson's interview...

      I love the irony. Guy griping about rockstar making money. Behind him, is a rockstar, writing down his gripings, to make one of the most iconic rock songs ever. Which will no doubt be playing on those same tvs later that year, and he will probably be saying the same things about the song written with his lyrics.

      That was truly spot on, sounded great and indeed for a fair price :)
      Now, can I give suggestions three truly hard ones if I may:
      Alex Lifeson from Rush (Can do Geddy too, his sound should be slightly easier)
      Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree and oh, so many other projects
      Adam Jones from Tool
      These should be a right proper challenge for ye lads, eh?

  • @mkguitarproject

    Another video to prove that Knopfler's sound is the most underrated in the world. People start thinking it's easy. Then they start thinking it's possible to replicate it easily. Then they record a video to say they have succeeded. And then they fail so miserably that they realise the only easy thing about the whole process is that: to fail.

    The source for Money for Nothing wasn't someone he met at work when he was young -- MTV was only founded in 1981. It was some "meathead", as he called him, in a shop some time in the 80s. The song was recorded on a Les Paul, not a Strat and the rhythm parts on Sultans (5:18) and all the songs on the first two albums were by his brother, David Knopfler.

    I'd love to see Rabea pull off that dumb riff from Electric Wizard- Dopethrone. SUPER bassy and insane. Otherwise, sounds like Steve Howe? I just want to see Rabea pull off some of his licks and solos... And if I was president of the universe, I'd make Toska cover some Yes.

    Well... this just proves that I will never be able to sound like Mark Knopfler no matter what I spend lol I give you a lot of credit for trying the harder stuff, like Brothers in Arms (deceptively not simple to play. He put a lot of feeling in that one)

    • @mikearkous8379
      @mikearkous8379 8 років тому +1

      Michael Lloyd tone comes from the hand and learning his phrasing. Mark has such amazing dynamics. I have been studying his style for years. I can get his Les Paul tone on a Roland cube for brothers in arms and money for nothing I can get his assault and sound with the same set up it's all about adjusting tone knobs and feeling the song

    in an interview he said he was in a electronics shop in new york wandering around and there was some fat construction builder on a lunch break watching one of the tvs with his mates in the shop and he was the one who said all the one liners "money for nothing" and stuff like that. Also in the music video there is a cartoon builder sort of character watching a tv who was based on this person.

    Money For Nothing was from a rant Mark Knopfler heard a guy say in an American department store whilst watching MTV. The challenge with nailing the Mark Knopfler tone/style is that is style is so unique to him physiologically it's almost impossible to copy. It's more about getting a feel for his style than actually nailing it, but that's a good thing cause it causes you to aborb elements of his style but inadvertently develop your own style

      +Canadaguitar yeah but its kinda outdated now because dorje sounds a lot more refined in their recent ep than they did on the first one

      +Nathan Butler You could use the same gear, but I think it'd be more fun for them to do it with non chapman and non victory. Plus the kraken isn't exactly budget

    • @Legallydistinctswampcreature
      @Legallydistinctswampcreature 9 років тому

      Still a bit expensive. I'd say ML3 Modern might be a bit more realistic, especially since they used it quite a bit for the recording of the Catalyst EP. Ghost Fret is awesome, don't get me wrong but I think they could get quite close for just that extra bit cheaper, maybe get an RD1 with that bit left over.

    Great video - apparently the reason why a lot of sound engineers use Money For Nothing to check levels is it was one of the very first songs where every part was levelled to come out at different parts of the speaker/headphones

    Sultans of swing: middle pickup, amp a little crancked up, chorus, and specially: D MINOR CHORD HITTING ALL STRINGS (Making a Dm with bass on A). He didn't use brige-middle position in early stuff because his 1961 Fender Stratocaster did't even have a 5 way selector.

    He went into a home appliance store, and there was a delivery guy at the back watching a wall of TV's tuned to MTV saying those things. He's told that story a hundred times.
    The signature model was in Hotrod red, not fiesta. It had texas specials.
    The quilt top WAS Pensa, not Schecter. He used Schecter strats too.
    Brothers in Arms is on a Les Paul too.

    In 2000, Knopfler appeared on Michael Parkinson's interview program and explained again where the lyrics originated. According to Knopfler, he was in New York and stopped by an appliance store. At the back of the store, they had a wall of TVs which were all tuned to MTV. Knopfler said there was a man working there dressed in a baseball cap, work boots, and a checkered shirt delivering boxes who was standing next to him watching. As they were standing there watching MTV, Knopfler remembers the man coming up with lines such as "what are those, Hawaiian noises?...that ain't workin'," etc. Knopfler asked for a pen to write some of these lines down and then eventually put those words to music.Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx, in misinterpreting the lyrics as coming directly from Dire Straits rather than a character based on a store employee, claimed that the song was about his band, and that the members of Dire Straits were in an electronics store where a row of TVs were all playing Mötley Crüe.[7]The songwriting credits are shared between Mark Knopfler and Sting.[8] Sting was visiting Montserrat during the recording of the song, and was invited to add some background vocals. Sting has stated that his only compositional contribution was the "I want my MTV" line, which followed the melody from his song "Don't Stand So Close to Me".

    Great video! Keep e'm coming guy's.
    I think you got about as close as someone can get to the Brothers in Arms tone without actually having Mark Knopfler's gear and hands. Great tip about rolling off the tone on the guitar and increasing the treble on the drive pedal. I've been playing for many years and never thought about doing that.
    It's so simple yet....LOL....just goes to prove that an old dog like me CAN learn new tricks!
