I am a 1970's California guitar player raised on Santana and playing his music as long as well. You did an out standing job recreating his tone and style with this rig and pedals. So much so that I am going to investigate this equipment even now 3 years later. You guys always represent the equipment and the artists in outstanding ways. I tell everyone about your demos about equipment and ability to maximize the budget.
Considering that Carlos Santana uses a PRS with all Brazilian rosewood neck ($4200), and two Dumble overdrive reverbs ($50,000 +) and his original snakeskin boogie (priceless), I think you did a really job recreating his rig with £1500 .
Gherkin Flout Tubanomeister The $4200 one is probably the one they sell to the public. Santana's is most likely a one off made specifically for him with even more highly custom woods and shit haha. Idk just speculation.
Jonathan Dean yeah he has 2 main ones, one with brazilian rosewood neck and one with indian, so he can take the indian one into europe without them taking it
sounds great, Carlos Santana was the 1st guy that I saw that made me realize playing guitar was just as cool as singing and could be as effective in getting a point across
Prince had a lot of guitars that were designed just for him, plus he was a master of post-recording production. I think, it could be really hard to get his tone right.
Fernando Samaniego Totally. And what I really like about Rabea's playing is that he's got all the chops, but he's also got tons of soul and has a great sense of melody. Not all players have these. I really wish I was as good a guitarist as Rabea.
Guys you're all clambering on what they should sound like next. How about giving some mad props for completely nailing the Santana sound. Dude that tone is just bang on point gentlemen. Damn.
"Sounds like... Sounds like without breaking the bank." We've faced a wall of DSL-40s at each other. We have them set on full volume with just a little bit of gain, with nothing connected to the input jacks on either. Then we put an 400 quid epiphone with a locking tremolo (that's a steal) inbetween them. Then we left a backpack with a tube streamer, a xotic ep booster, and boss chorus in a bin a petrol station. And then we went to the pub for a pint.
Roger Comer no, just shows that "the tone is in the fingers" is absolute bs. If I played Europa instead of Santana, with the exact same rig, it would be really, really hard to hear even the slightest difference.
@@adrieldiaz6402 thats a question of skill and proper technique though. Take a professional guitar and give him santanas gear and he will probably sound really close. Not discrediting santana or tone but thats just how it is. Also I think spectre sound studios did a video about this a while ago and came to the same conclusion
@@HimTortons - Given that Santana sounds like Santana whatever gears he's using and yet no one really sounds like him, I do rather doubt that. Santana's sound is what's in his head. Once he's played it clever people can almost duplicate it, but until he's played it.... Honestly, can you, can anyone, really 'see' what it is he's hearing as he continuously twiddles that volume knob?
I was wondering how you guys were going to 'get around' the high price of Mesa amp gear. Well done. Sounded very much like Carlos. If you wanted to be pedantic about nailing the sound Rabea could have used a thicker pick and gone lighter in strings, but gee, for the price you paid for that rig, the soundalike is impressively close.
So many negative people , nice and informative video . I'll never gig, but it's good to have someone to show you what might work for you. Thanks Guys !!!
I've used the Tweaker 15 combo with an SE Santana for a few years now. Great instruments that cover a broad range of styles/tones. Nice to see you guys playing some of my gear!
+Thomas Scheltens I think that Tony's using a relatively simple rig, almost all of his guitars pack humbuckers because he uses a great deal of distortion
Ooh well, I would be really interested in the old sabbath sound, first two albums mainly, cause it had a kind of mix between english classic rock and early heavy metal, but I mainly think its kinda weird that we haven't seen a hendrix rig yet?? I mean comon...
Best one yet guys, really enjoyed the playing ! The tones achieved were pretty much on the money and all for a relatively modest budget. The late great Stuart Adamson of BIg Country would be interesting challenge as he had a very defined "bagpipe" sound and used primarily Mesa amps in his rig . Keep up the good work guys ,i always look forward to the "Sound like " series especially the interesting gear choice and stunning playing technique.
As muchs as I love the sound with the PRS (current and hard to replicate) he recorded his greatests hits (before Supernatural) with an SG. That should have been addressed IMO.
Actually Santana used to play a Gibson SG in his early career. In the '70s he played a Yamaha sg 2000, and from 1980 or even earlier passed to play exclusively PRS. Well before releasing Supernatural.
Yep. Did a pretty good job for sure. Would be interesting in the vids to hear the 'sound on a budget' A/B'd with the expensive stuff that the artists actually used so ppl can hear if they are getting much more for all the extra dosh, or can be content.
Carlos used a Gibson SG cherry at Woodstock and most venues of the era. His sound was unique to him at the time. I like that better than the PRS he now uses, more raw and gritty.
and don't forget the Yamaha SG2000 phase. i've got one (a recent model, to be fair) and although it was sort of meant to be a Les Paul-ish guitar in construction...mahogany neck, body and maple cap, the pickups are definitely a bit brighter than your average Gibson 'buckers, and especially with the child taps. So i guess the SE with HBs is probably a reasonable substitute, too.
Carlos peaked back in the SG days. Santana's Greatest Hits album was extraordinary. He's lost his mojo as of late... he's just playing notes - lots of them, very fast, but just playing notes.
What about Sounds Like Matt Bellamy - that could be tricky for 1500 quid. Another good one would be Sounds like Kim Thyall or maybe even Jerry Cantrell. Cheers guys.
for matt bellamy you just need a tele shape guitar with hbuckers or the cort sig for pedals maybe a big muff or a fuzz factory, phase 90, and a distortion pedal for the amp you could go with the dsl40 lol that's pretty much it tho if you had a bigger budget you could get bareknuckles i think i went PAST 1500 quid so idk
Those are 6V6's in the 15 watt, the 40 watt has the 6L6's...but I like the 6V6's, they seem to have a smokey overtone to them and they also have the early breakup. They don't produce a lot of power but in 5-15 watt applications they sound awesome. Good job, I might buy a PRS Santana and try it out...thank you for the video, keep it up m/
I love the boogie sound & am looking into the flux drive vs flux 5- if I already had a graphic eq pedal, would there be a point in getting the flux 5 (the one w the eq) or should I just get the flux drive? Would a flux 5 & graphic eq pedal sound different than the upgraded/more expensive MB flux drive with the built-in eq?
Very enjoyable and informative video, as always! Thanks! I can't help but wonder how much difference an MXR Dynacomp would have made as the first box in the effects chain. Cool video once again; that tone is great. My wish - might be tricky for budget because of out of phase pickups etc, but Sound like PETER GREEN would be amazing. :)
when doing black magic woman you improvised some little speed runs through it but it sorta sounded like cliffs of dover by eric Johnson so you can achieve that tone aswell
I bet they couldn’t get close, he was such a tricky guy with the studio processing. An integral part of many of his sounds is doubling very different sounds together

By the way, at Woodstock Santana used an early Big Muff but it`s reckoned that he has used an Ibanez Tube Screamer frequently over the years. Currently his only pedal used live is a Dunlop 535Q wah with a TC Electronic D-Two rack mount delay.
they did it and before you start going nuts screaming "V V" there wasn't any so they went with an Epi les paul custom and without going around the bush they got that one, you know... that one, the one they said not to do anymore but they lied about it! the DSL40C and for FX they got MXR Distortion +, Micro Chorus cos there was no Stereo chorus, Micro Flanger cos they didn't have the right Flanger in either, Boss GE7 cos there was no MXR 10 Band EQ's and finally a Dunlop Wah
Cool video. I'm glad you added the gear list in the comments, I couldn't understand what you were saying half the time! I went to the end of the video 1st--you got the sound, or awfully damned close considering your budget. Thanks, guys! This will be my Christmas present to myself and my brother, I'll leave it all at his house to play during the week!
I think the ringer here is that Bea has an amazing touch with vibrato, and just emulates guitarist really well.....I'd love to see a Brian May or Richie Blackmore video...
Insightful and entertaining as ever. I dread the day that you run out of people to sound like. As this rig is under budget the extra money could be used to buy a straw trilby for a bit of visual to compliment the sonic.
Awesome Vid guys. One of my favourite artists. Can I just ask a (simple / dumb) question? I notice in a lot of your vids you choose to use a Reverb pedal when the amp you use already has reverb. Why? Do one of Carlos when you bust the bank..
So expensive.
We'd be game for that!
Hell yeah! That's what I've been waiting for! Do it!
Yup, literally needs to bust the bank, the central bank to be exact 😅
Sound Like Prince - Without Busting The Bank!!!!!!!!
With OR without I just want to hear them play some Prince.
Prince had a lot of guitars that were designed just for him, plus he was a master of post-recording production. I think, it could be really hard to get his tone right.
Blinki18284 compared to other artists they’ve done, I think it would be a great video.
Nicholas Kopp all boss pedals and a fender USA Tele special
I can do that kind of video. I know his gear and was able to create some Prince sounds. Some of his gear is not expensive at all.
I could watch Rabea play guitar all day. The guy's a sick guitarist.
+Lee Hutchings same here, lots of incredibly talented virtuosos out there, but bea's always fun to watch playing

One of the better episodes you guys have done, the tone is spot on.

carlos santana by busting the bank please
sound like Alex Lifeson
Yes!
+Richard Hawkins I've been requesting this a lot too
Yes That would be the best one
Omg i was litterally just about to suggest that and then i saw your comment! Alex lifeson would be a good one

there is a cantrell signature by G&L. Sounds really good

+Lalairu Andertons doesn't carry G&L though do they? I've never seen them demo any.
+angrypig24 doesn't matter, the signature JC guitar is above budget. They have a cheaper option I think.
That sounds glorious. Just confirms why I love the 808. That flux drive sounds great too!!

PLEASE. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. DO MATTHEW BELLAMY OF MUSE.
+Fender maine i'm agree but i think they can't do it because no have mansons guitar

It would be awesome! they dont need manson do that either
