The most important thing to get right with ACDC's tone is just turning a valve amp up high, and using a humbucker plugged straight into it with minimal gain. If you turn it up high enough, the amp will start to break up naturally on its own. A lot of people don't realise how clean Angus and Macolm have played their guitars over the years... It's just really, really loud! :D It would also be really cool to see you guys do Billy Gibbons/ZZ Top ;)
+scaredypicker In fact, Angus uses the Schaffe-Vega, which compresses and expands his tone (In the 70s it was a Wireless Device), and his Amp gets really boosted. The Powerage Album has some really Overdriven Songs, compared to earlier Albums.
+scaredypicker this strategy is so true it actually worked just as well with my Marshal MG 80 combo back in the day through my Les Paul studio. Any good solid state amp (not digital or modelling) will pull that off nicely because at low gain there's still enough dynamics coming through, and that's half of Angus' tone.

You're wrong. On many albums Angus has really distorted sound. Malcolm too. While playing live, especially in Highway era, Angus had super distorted sound, Malcolm minimaly. Let's listen to some live albums...
+scaredypicker Generally you are correct, But they have used distortion before especially in earlier albums and some live performances for various reasons. The important thing if you use distortion just a small amount and it sounds very close to AC/DC. The biggest secret though is picking. Malcolm young plays and picks very hard on the chords and notes which also gives them the distinctive sound.
Low gain, high natural distortion. Malcolm has been using a specific wireless device which adds lots of fuzzy nasty hairy sound for decades, and that's the secret to his extremely touchy sound.
As I'm watching this, Malcolm died a few months ago, it's pretty sad especially that he fell victim to dementia but I'm sure he would love to know that his music will carry on and be known for generations. Rest in peace, one of the greatest rhythm guitarists ever.
I know Angus's rig inside and out. To be truly authentic, you need a Phase 90, a Boss Metalzone (with the gain maxed out) a Clyde wah pedal, a Line 6 amp (the Spider will do nicely) and a Behringer delay pedal, with a Electro-Harmonix Cathedral reverb box to smooth it all out. See? I told you I was an expert. Did I miss anything?

Am I the only person who wants to see a sound like Slash by busting the bank. I just wanna hear these guys go all out with the ultimate Les Paul/Marshall tone

As an AC/DC connissure/nerd, I'd like to point out that Angus NEVER uses effects pedals. he just goes straight into the amp. Great video/playing otherwise man. Matt, you nailed it on the Malcolm tone though dude. 😃😃😉😉
What they are doing is using pedals in a smart way to emulate the boost given by Angus’ old school wireless and later the preamp built to emulate that wireless.
Great work Rabea and Matt! BTW, Thanks to you guys I bought a DSL40C and I absolutely LOVE it! I've been playing for 37 yrs and have owned countless tube amps but the DSL40C is the best all around amp and best value of them all. Keep those videos coming fellas. Rock On!
Excellent series! It's entertaining and educational. I have a suggestion for a future installment that should both be a worthy challenge. Tom Scholz (Boston). Tones from the first two Boston albums were a clinic in how great the electric guitar could sound.

Angus used to use in the 70's a Schaffer-Vega Diversity System, created by Ken Schaffer. Not available anymore, but a guy called Fil Olivieri over 30 odd years worked out what it was that gave Angus his sound and with Ken's help created the SoloDallas Schaffer Replica. Hope that helps :)
+TheZooropaBaby haha i'm assuming you know it's just a bass player and a drummer. i suppose they could go through the bass players process and some cheaper stuff to sub in but your talking a bass, a guitar amp, a bass amp, a TU-3, and some pedals. gonna cost some $ no matter what your using
they should try it BY busting the bank but unfortunately they can't get the DG335 so they'll most likely get an ES335 or something that's like that with a Mesa Boogie Double Rectifier for Chris this time they will hopefully use his Telecaster
For Malcolm I use a Blackstar HT40. Clean Channel, Boutique. Volume and tone on full, master volume at about 10 o'clock. Those cheap Gretsch really rock the Malcolm Young. Just a a little boost for the Malcolm intro's.
Hey bea and matt, Angus uses no pedals however the booster/ compressor is a unit called the schaeffer vega wireless unit. Look up solodallas on youtube who has a lot of info on it and makes his own replica pedals (andertons would be interested in stocking it maybe) it really makes a difference.

Stevie Ray Vaughn please. Would be entertaining to watch the two of you sound like the Scorpions. (Cover "No One Like You" Bea)Great work and I like watching the selection process at Andertons.
I really enjoy these videos even when you do a artist that I have never listened too. I particularly like the pedal section where putting the comp before the boost. Since I am new at playing the Guitar I find the pedal usage and the line chain important
All you got to do with the dsl is crank the volume and gain up to 10 on the clean channel. No need for anything other than plugging it straight into the amp. I like keeping it pure.
I would love to see a sounds like Megadeth episode. The Misfits would be a good one too since not much is known about the equipment the original lineup used. It would be also cool to see the tone from the 1995 Misfits replicated too. Doyle's tone was MONSTROUS on Famous Monsters and American Psycho.
I do. But it must sound like ACDC, or why bother? To be honest, I have no idea how ACDC gets their awesome sound. No one seems to be able to duplicate it.
***** Its not about sounding like ACDC, its about sounding CLOSE to it. If you want to sound exactly like ACDC and have couple of grands to spare, then be my guest.
Heavy Gauge I've found that you can get a very close tone with an MG50FX, Fulltone GT-500 Pedal, and an SG Standard (I'm using a 2016 Standard T, neck pickup sounds closer to Angus than the Bridge). All of this cost about $1500. SG for $1200, pedal for ~$120, MG50FX for $200 (All USD).
Love this series guys. I think purely because of how much fun you dudes are clearly having haha. Glad to see the store part back again. Have you done a sounds like metallica? Its a common one im sure but purely as i would enjoy seeing your take on it i reckon it would be cool :)
As a big AC/DC fan and owner of a Gibson SG and DSL40, I personally find the crunch channel to give a closer Angus tone. Whilst the compressor and booster certainly made the ultra gain channel sound more classic, for me, it was just too modern and gainy a sound. Just my opinion.
The most important thing to get right with ACDC's tone is just turning a valve amp up high, and using a humbucker plugged straight into it with minimal gain. I really enjoy these videos even when you do a artist that I have never listened too. I particularly like the pedal section where putting the comp before the boost. Since I am new at playing the Guitar I find the pedal usage and the line chain important
Without busting the bank by buying a gibson SG which for USA is like 1500 dollars
Actually that’s the special faded. I had one I bought for $600. It got stolen and I found another for $550
All you got to do with the dsl is crank the volume and gain up to 10 on the clean channel. No need for anything other than plugging it straight into the amp. I like keeping it pure.
Korn please ( :
Yessssssssss
+Luka Aeschlimann An ibanez APEX20 is a good starting place
***** in your futile opinion
+kkboxer20 Are you a millionare? Are you in a successful band? No. Therefore your argument on dissing korn is invalid.

Ha! You're wearing the same shirts you nerds!
Thanks so much for finally doing AC/DC... now please oh please do Judas Priest, Screaming for Vengence era!
sounds nothing like m.young but angus was sort of near...
Sounded like Malcolm had too much treble rolled off.
+Lorna Woollett Agreed, playing style was all wrong as well.
sounds like someones nit picking
Not nit picking if it doesn't sound anything like the guy he is trying to sound like...
my favorite sounds like so far, great job
Watching this video in 2019 "I will be Malcolm" "Hope he's doing alright" Well..
That was spot on guys! Great job!
Sounds like Metallica
Uh no
Too late my friend
+Earl Hickey never too late to correct such a false statement.
OMG no I know what you thought lol. I was suggesting that they should do that. Sorry for the confusion mate.
+Earl Hickey ohhhh haha my bad.
This filtertron pickups sounds sooo good!!
That's nothing like ACDC
u obviously dont understand the "without busting a bank" part
Heavy Gauge Don't forget the Super Slinky strings and the Extra Heavy Fender picks that Angus uses.
That sounded awesome, probably my favorite so far...might be looking at one of those DSL40s
