- Sound Like Eric Clapton - Without Busting The Bank
Watch Rabea Massaad and Matt Hornby attempt to sound like your favourite artists on a budget using the most accurate but affordable gear they can find from Andertons Music Co.
In this episode they attempt to sound like one of the founding fathers of blues rock guitar, Eric Clapton!

Here's the gear they chose:
Squire Classic Vibe 50's Strat - tinyurl.com/y2xqrj3c
Fender Bassbreaker 15 1x12 Combo - goo.gl/vkIvLG

I had such a blast doing this. I can't thank Clappo enough for his late 80s stuff - that was such inspirational music for me. Cheers to Matt & Rabea for letting me crash the show.
CaptAnderton
i watch all your vids and ive noticed you gotten better as a player. your more relaxed and let it flow and this vid is a prime example of it.
keep up the great vids and keep up the relaxed natural playing.
ITS EASY TO PLAY SOMEONE ELSES SONGS, YOU DONT JUDGE A GUITAR PLAYER BY HOW THEY PLAY ANOTHER PLAYERS SONGS, IF THAT WAS THE CASE THEN THERE ARE MILLIONS OF GREAT GUITAR PLAYERS OUT THERE, YOU JUDGE A GUITAR PLAYER BY THE MUSIC THEY CREATE THEIR SELF, THAT BEING SAID THOUGH HE HAS GOTTEN ALOT BETTER OVER THE YEARS BUT I SAY THAT FROM HIS STUFF HE COMES UP WITH ON HIS OWN, ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL IF SOMEONE PLAYS ANTHERS SONGS, SO I AGREE WITH YOU EXCEPT FOR THE PART OF THIS VIDEO BEING THE PROOF, WATCH HIS OLD VIDEO WITH CHAPPERS WHEN DID A SOUND LIKE CLAPTON, THE THINGS HE PLAYED IN BOTH VIDEOS SOUND THE SAME
would have been a fender pro junior a good choice?
thanks
Rockerx1997x THEY NEEDED SONETHING THAT WAS GOING TO BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE EXTRA GAIN THE MID BOOST WAS GOING TO ADD SO I THINK THAT'S WHY THEY WENT BASSBREAKER 15 BECAUSE IT HAS THAT GAIN ON TAP ALREADY SO THEY KNEW IF THEY SET IT TO A CLEANER TONE AND PUT IN THE MID BOOST IT WOULD SOUND GOOD, THE BLUES JUNIOR MAY HAVE NOT HANDLED THE MID BOOST THE SAME WAY, DOES THAT AMP HAVE MORE GAIN IN IT THEN THE BLUES JUNIOR?
thanks for your answer,
i never played with a mid boost neither i played a pro junior with single coils, i only have humbuckers so i don't know, but i will check it out
You're definitely going to need to do a "by busting the bank" for clapton in the future!
psychofmse I second this idea.
psychofmse with all eras of clapton!
Lol, £4000 for a Soldano alone.
This tone ☺️
That'd be awesome
You should do a spin off "Sounds Like..." series where you only use the classic vibe Strat and the Marshall DSL40C and try and see how many artists sounds you can come close to.
Yes!
totally!
Anyone
I think Dave Simpson has a series of videos on his channel where he uses an Orange amp to get a bunch of Artists' sounds.
Eric is really basic ,, know what your playing really well ,, superb vibrato , note selection & phrasing & Time ,, you will sound like him no matter what ,, just master those !!!
What if one of you guys "busted the bank" while the other stayed on budget as a comparison?
pickledblues they've kinda done that, but not in the same video
You owe us a sound like CREAM then...
Yup
Yes please
I feel like Clapton is a perfect candidate for BY busting the bank
I feel so sorry for Matt when everyone keeps cutting him off when he tries to speak. Story of my life lol
Got to do a Mark Knopfler sounds like!!
ua-cam.com/video/aT4jJ1nCEWY/v-deo.html You are welcome :)
Awesome guys!! I don't know how the hell that one slipped by without me seeing it!!
sean toner the bank is broken just from your suggestion
Just a guitar, without any effects 😊
Good episode! I think it'd be really cool to do see a *by busting* and *without busting* in the same episode so people can get a feel for the difference these rigs make when trying to get the same tone. Just a suggestion. Cheers!
Oh PS - you guys still wanting to do a redo of John Frusciante?
Sound Mind If I had access to all of that gear. I would do this for free. Let alone do it as a job.
some people do like staring in cameras and talking to themselves....
Sound like Mick Mars! Huge tones for a one-guitarist band
That's true!
KnapfordMaster98 yessssss!!!!!
Yes sir! I second that! I'd like to see them do Jake E. Lee. By far the best tone out of Ozzy's guitarists.
pfff, sif better than Rhoads...wake up to yourself son
Looks like u got ur wish
Bad Love is such an awesome guitar song. Clapton is a fairly simple player but makes the instrument sing with passion. Can never get enough EC.
The Captain nailed Layla spot on!
SOUND LIKE PRINCE!!!!!
FaZe with that realllllllllyyyy long username got to have Danish Pete in that one he loves the guy
yes please
just go to hendrix & swap the strat for a tele
This was another good choice! But you know why I'm here...
Sound like Johnny Marr!
(It would also be cool to do a proper Sound like The Smiths, since Andy Rourke was an awesome bassist with a unique tone, which was primarily solid state)
You read mind!
12ealDeal yesyesyesyesyes
12ealDeal Marr is essential
I would like to see a, "sound like Zappa."
I love seeing Captain going back to what he loves - classic blues/rock.
You guys NEED to make eddie van halen, with or without busting the bank
Sound like joe bonamassa
TheGuitarGuy11 yesss pleaaaase
***** you could write that under every Sounds like Video. It is in the Fingers, you're right but people want Joe B. tone without busking the bank
maexle01 it's all in the fingers with joe, you need his fingers to get his sound no matter what guitar you use. His rig is super simple when he plays live, two bassmans and two twins with an overrated special and a wah. Oh and a hell of a lot of vintage guitars
froggatt24 some people don't have the money for a twin or a Vintage guitar
maexle01 I just said you need joe's fingers no matter what guitar you use
JOHN FRUSCIANTE:
a) without busting the bank redo
b) BY busting the bank
I'd love to have a Rabea Bobble Head I could connect to my metronome - would make my sessions much groovier! :P
Lmao
blues before sunrise.... best song ever i have always loved clapton and everything he did really i play the tx lace pickups and really you can't get his sound with out some kind of pedal or active some thing...always a pleasure to hear guys playing blues... his new album was alright as well..dear old memory lane and all my influences as far as blues could always have a few of clapton... there is the sound cool cool wild.. the tbs switch is it when it comes to sound, i love being able to play with sounds and back off the bass and tree and gain awesome setup.. i have been told a lot like a gibson but much less lighter... as far as guitar like the stratocasters.. wicked guitar captain i did the same thing with my squire 50 strata caster excellent sound from that stylish guitar...way cool..
Finally. Now do Eric Johnson please.
Yes please
First you need to be able to play Eric Johnson
aidanscovers very true lol
Christian Augustin I've been requesting this one for a while now :/
+aidanscovers ^ He's insane. Some mad pentatonics going on there.
Sound like Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead.
Dilton Aguirre sound like radiohead
Dilton Aguirre YESSS
Squier Classic Vibe Tele - 417.00
Vox AC15 w/Celestion Greenback - 580.00
Boss SD1 - 45.00
Digitech Whammy Ricochet - 129.00
EHX Nano Small Stone - 61.00
Boss RE20 Space Echo - 199.00
Total - 1431.00
I'd skip out on the Carbon Copy since the RE20 that he actually DOES use is in budget and the Small Stone is more of a staple sound than the envelope filter, and the ricochet is the cheapest way to get a whammy in your rig. It might not nail everything 100% bang on but it'd get you pretty close
Yes!
Yes! Please do it!
Some suggestions
- The Beatles
- Primus
- Van Halen
- ZZ Top
- Chuck Berry
- Aerosmith
- Smashing Pumpkins
- Radiohead
- KISS
- Queen
Andrew Pappas Radiohead
yes!! yes!!!
jordan74 Yeah, Radiohead would be cool. They'd probably need to find a Fender American Standard Telecaster, maybe Vox AC30 and whatever pedals Jonny Greenwood uses (I think he has a pitch shifter for his solo on Paranoid Android but I can't really tell)
I don't think that the American standard could keep them in the budget. Either Mexican or Classic Vibe, depending on the effects budget.
Dodge Hattrup You never know
Awesome job as always guys!!! Great choice on getting The Captain in to do this one. Like Rabea said, I couldn't think of anyone else better to do it. Eric Clapton is a sick blues guitar player and so is Lee.
Great video, love seeing the Captain here. Would love to hear a Sounds Like Duane Allman! His Fillmore tone is probably the greatest rock tone ever.
love rabea and matt but who the heck is the new guy?
motus he's the owner of Anderton's😁😁😂
I'm assuming you're just being sarcastic and you do actually know about Lee Anderton who is the owner/operator of Anderton's Music Co and is it a LOT of the videos on the channel, just not so much THIS series.
Lee Anderton, he owns the store.
the captain!
He's the Captain. ;-)
This was right up our alley, great job Lee!
Absolutely loved it, great job.
Sounds like Smashing Pumpikns or Weezer pls
- Brother Neroooooo
+- “PibbzY” DELETE!
OBSOLETE!
James Nguyen JAMES NGUYAAAHN PREPARE TO BE DELETED, AND BASK IN MY BROKEN BRILLIANCE
I didn't there were so many wrestling fans watching here
Good job, guys. Lord knows it's not easy doing your usual gig with your boss. He thanked you for inviting him so many times that I have the sinking suspicion perhaps he invited himself.
Whilst I love the sound/tone that Lee is getting here, with the mid-boost and having bought new pickups, I was gobsmacked by the Clapton Strat sound he got in the 2013 video referred to here ('Sound Like Eric Clapton for Under £1,000 - (Chappers Favourite Sound Like So Far)'), and the ingenuity with which he approximated that sound (quite closely).
In fact, I was so impressed that I went out last week and bought the Spark Boost and GE 7 Equalizer pedals that he used to get the Clapton Strat tone in the video mentioned above. Using those has been a revelation, and even better, has enabled me to get that Clapton sound I have been after for so long.
And those pedals cost me just over a hundred quid, secondhand, so that is a much cheaper route to go (even if you buy pedals new), and gives one a much more versatile set up than having to mod a guitar to achieve the sound.
Thanks Captain Lee.
The minute Wonderful Tonight started in the intro, I knew the Captain was playing. Perfect choice. And you got a great tone.
I also think it would be awesome to do a "Sounds Like Clapton by busting the Bank",obviously featuring The Captain...but I think it would be really nice if either Matt or Rabea did a late '60's era rig and the other one a more Fendery sort of thing...Cheers!!!
The solo to Bad Love still gets me. Definitely in my top 3 solo's of all time - tone, feel...!
Agreed one of my favourite solos by Clapton
My god that Sunshine of Your Love tone sounded so good. Really need to get my hands on a classic vibe strat.
I've been watching the Capt play for years anow and every. single. video. he absolutely nails whatever he's playing. I think he's my favorite "not famous" guitar player. Even if you add the famous players, he's still right up there.
Sounds like:
- Ritchie Blackmore
- Alex Lifeson
Get Dave Simpson in - the guy knows his onions 🎸🎶🎩👍🏻
Love Rabea's rock face during "Bad Love" and Captain channeling Eric🤣
Thanks a ton for making this vid. Was really helpfully
Do a sound like Cliff Burton, it'd be really interesting to too see you guys do a bass player
noooooooooooooooooooooo
They've done Lemmy for Motörhead so Burton would be freaking awesome, plus he's one of the guys that made me want to play bass as well as guitar
the Reverend Billy F. Gibbons!!!
Clapton live from hyde Park 96,97 was the greatest concerts ever, i got to see him in 98 in Phoenix, was also one of the greatest concerts ever, blackie was screaming, couldn't belive the bends he was doing, had a big screen each side of the stage zoomed in on his fingers, you had to come out of your seat, chill down your spine.
"Wonderful Tonight" is my parent's wedding song. Great vid, and great tones! Would love to see a Sounds like Weezer with/without busting the bank, next!
Sound like Sonic Youth?
Jaspertine YES
Yeeeeeeeeeeeees
I just wanna see how Matt and Rabea will get those weird tunings SY has
Great vid, can you do a sound like Richie kotzon please
Yes!!! I second this and he has his signature OMG! combined footpedal that could be used!!!
Yes! No plectrums allowed!
James Hartman Absolutely amazing how he can play some of those runs without a pick!!!
Sounds superb!! Love Captain's CV Strat, might have to get myself a Classic Vibe and do those mods because the sound is just great!
I’d love to hang out with you guys for a day. Thanks for all your vids! I’m learning a lot!
Nice job guys!! And the new guy did a decent job! ;-)
abit too much gain to my ears... that being said, my favorite Clapton era was the astonishingly short 2 year run of Cream. YES, Cream were only together for TWO YEARS 1966-1968 (although a final album was released in 1969 after the band had already called it quits), which shows how amazing they were considering they broke up 49 years ago(!!!) and they are still talked about & influencing musicians to this day.
I make Clapton's 'great' era as even shorter. From 'I feel free' through to 'Disraeli Gears'. He started to go downhill right after that. Which means that this demo is pointless to me, to get the Clapton sound you need a 58-60's Les Paul (Although I did get pretty close with an Epiphone Sheraton and a Musiwewe Purple/Blue pedal right out of the box. Unfortunately after someone touched the knobs I lost it...).
@@larrywharf1583 an sg would be better suited, he only used a les paul fully for fresh cream. Disraeli gears was recorded with the fool sg
Great job Lee! Eric Clapton, David Gilmour and Jimmy Page were my inspirations. Love these videos.
Great stuff! Love the Bassbreaker 15!
Sounds like soundgardennn
Do a sound like Duane allman pleeeeeeeease
Agree!!! Going back to what inspired you is an incredible feeling
Yessss thank you soooo much!!! I love you guys!!
Ahh Lee! I know you love the Clapton mid boosted Strat sound but I was hoping for the Bluesbreakers and Cream era...
8:20 sounds like Slash's knocking on heavens door first solo
Same bend :p
Simeey yeah
Lee, your playing and feel were great here! Well done
Great episode! The Captain's Classic Vibe Strat is pretty badass. Looks like Rabea has lost some weight. Looking good dude!
Sounds like NOFX! I will comment this until you guys do it just been waitin for the right time
Yes!
Roberto Reyes YES I love that band
Sound like Johnny Marr
I saw tons of the captains videos. But i never recognized him so much as a wonderful Guitar player like in this Video. Great and tasty playing. Thanks!
I did the same thing with my Squire Vintage Modified Strat! I added the Clapton electronics and some nice scooped-sounding pickups and it ended up being a Mayer/Clapton hybrid. Sounds monstrous to this day!
we need a sound like THE BEATLES
Sound like Deep Purple
Sound like Free
Sound like Jeff Beck
As a huge guitar fan and player, watching your videos and gear demoing, I've always assumed the captain was holding back a little with his guitar playing a little. Now after watching this (not a huge Eric Clapton fan) it seems the captain came out of his shell and just let loose with good feeling and soul. To me, that's what a cracking guitarist is. Well done guys.
Awesome! Thank you very much!
1.Avenged Sevenfold
2.Iron Maiden
3.Steve Vai
4.Megadeth
5.Jimi Hendrix
6.The Beatles
7.Scorpion
8.Van Halen
9.nick jonas
10.lil wayne
Lil Wayne? How to sound like shit by breaking the bank, meth. Lots and lots of meth.
To be fair to Lil Wayne, he did about as well as anyone who has never picked up a guitar in his life could have 😂
sound like John petrucci
Zachary Walsh become god that's the only way
Petrucci actually has a few sound-like vids on one of the Mesa channels where he goes over his tone on all 3 channels of his new sig head. Like, knob for knob, when he uses the EQ, what those settings are, etc. Will be hard to do that on a budget, but he'll give it to you for the JP-2C.
TheDarthsteve316 I know the gear he uses however I don't know how to do that on a budget. Also was wondering if they would use ibanez or music man.
i've added a rig together for a without and a BY busting version
Without:
Ibanez RG350 - £400 (this is because he used to use ibanez in the olden days before he switched to Musicman, he had a signature ibanez called the JPM but it's now discontinued)
Egnater Tweaker 15 - £430 (because they can't afford a Mesa Boogie and Marshall DSL is overrated)
Ibanez TS808 - £180
Boss DD3 Delay - £115
Boss CE5 Chorus Ensemble - £90
Dunlop John Petrucci Wah - £200
Total - £1415
BY:
Musicman JP - £2295
Mesa Boogie JP2C - £4100
Mesa Boogie Cab - £1400
MXR EVH Flanger - £150
BOSS PH3 Phase Shifter - £110
Ibanez TS808 - £180
Boss CE5 Chorus Ensemble - £90
Boss PS6 Harmonist - £130
Boss DD7 Delay - £135
Boss CS3 Compressor - £80
Dunlop John Petrucci Wah - £200
Absolutely smashing the bank open with £8870
This was great, thanks!
Thank you lee, thanks for inviting me (to appear on the channel of the shop I own) lol. Great episode, no one better to appear than the captain.
The Beatles, pleaseeee~~~ I love the Beatles as much as Lee loves Clapton
do a sound like Ritchie blackmore pleaase!!!!
Well done Captain. Nice solo work.
That's the Best One yet !! My favourite !! I'm defo getting a Eric Sig !! 🎸
Sound like Grateful Dead please
SOUNDS LIKE THE EAGLES/SKID ROW
Cap's tone is what I've always been wanting! New goal.
I was getting so frustrated towards the end because you hadn't played Layla yet, and then when you did, it just made my day! Nice one lads!
Life goal: to meet the captain.
Also: SOUNDS LIKE AVENGED SEVENFOLD PLZ
Great job, boys! By the way, can you do a "Sound Like Eddie Hazel", please? Thanks in advance!
EC is indeed a strat guy now but he was a les paul guy in the beginning and sg. He also used to be a AC-30 back in the old old days. Modified a custom Marshall "bluesbreaker" amplifier too. He favoured the Vox wah. Used a slide on occasian. His strats had a mid boost effect built into his Strats.
I never realized how good a player the Capt is. Great playing, Sir.
Please do a sounds like Motley Crue or Metallica by busting the bank
And megadeth
Caveman Plays they did Metallica already
Will York Music but they haven't do by busting the bank yet, they only did it Without busting the bank
And frank zappa
they did Mick Mars from Motley Crue recently! but if they're doing metallica with unlimited budget
for James: ESP Snakebyte,Truckster or Vulture, Mesa Boogie head and cab or Roland Jazz Chorus, with an overdrive pedal
for Kirk: ESP KH, since they don't stock Randall use either Marshall JVM/JCM or another Mesa Boogie amp, some chorus and the Dunlop kirk Hammett Wah
I'm still waiting for you guys to show me how to sound like Van Halen.
Thats definately the nicest playing I have heard from the Captain. Its like he is at home.
Yeeeeesssss I've been waiting for this
sound like an old deep Purple pls !
Zoso Sound like ritchie blackmore !
SYLVIE FONTAINE Yep !! but an old ritchie blackmore sound, like in the deep Purple's mark 1
Oh.Personaly i prefer the ritchie blackmore in rainbow era ;)
To get his current live tone you need to buy a used Derek Trucks.
I agree Bea ,the SG era is best. Great playing by the captain ! that thing does sound good (classic vibe)
Captain really nailed the Clapton touch. Nice playing.
Sound like Van Halen please !!!
Haven't watched yet but I'm guessing they're gonna use the classic vibe strat they always do..
Godammit
Hahahaha, you definitely know whats up
That was a really fun episode. I now realise what makes the "Bad Love" solo tone.
Sounds like weezer! Love Rivers' and Brian's thick, fuzzy guitar tone
Mr. Clapton deserves a sounds like by busting the bank
WEEEEEEZER bois.
Thanks a lot now I'm gonna have to mod my strat! Another great video guys cheers!
Lee is such an amazing blues player!
