I am pretty sure that I read/heard somewhere that Mark was playing a Music Man HD 130 at that time. ( an amp Leo Fender had his finger in on too). But its hard to say. Some says he started plying MM in 1976, the song is from 77/released in 1978 while some says he didn't started with MM until 1978 :) It's a twilight zone her. Leo Fender was the man though, no matter what.
I played this with my band for years. It doesn't get old. Of course, I used a Strat on the #2 position (bridge and middle pickup, out of phase). All went fine for a long time. We played it well and were satisfied until one day I missed the #2 position, (my Strat had a three-way switch) and I unknowingly played it on the middle pickup. It sounded better than ever and we all wondered what made the difference until I discovered the pickup switch in the middle instead of in its usual place stuck between the bridge and middle pickups. The amp I was using was a Vox AC-15 which characteristically produces lots of mids and upper-mids that enhances the sound of the middle pickup. Anyway, I suggest that this tune be played that way. See if maybe it sounds better or at least as good. Cheers. P.S. I just saw a vid of Knopfler playing Sultans. The pickup switch of his red Strat was set on the middle position.
Nailed it, veeery nice. I think, the beauty of learning song like this is, that every repetition is easy to accent and phrase differently, while staying musical.
Guillaume - did you not know that you can only nail the sound of Sultans Of Swing just when wearing a neon hairband??? - hahaha. But seriously - cool playing and explanation - thank you! 👍👍👍
Absolutely appreciate the great Mark Knopler and the famed red Strat. Guillome by far my choice would be Pink Floyd and the legendary David Gilmore. Love Thomann and of course Julia..Thanks guys
Playing this song in a band and around for years, I realized there's some kind of chorus on it. Like 70s chorus not quite 80s. And also ever so slightly tremolo.
i don't think Marks compressed sound was added later like you said. I think he used a compressor in real-time. When using a compressor you play different because the attack is different. Good point about the finger picking style.
Probably too much reverb (although it sounds nice). But I think the key is the second position into a Fender amp. I have heard so many people try to get this tone with all kinds of amps and pedals and it's really absurd. This is great.
I play it with a pick and you are 100 percent correct about the sound. I cant finger pick for anything. Its one of my greatest regrets not being able to really get the sound down because of it.
if you finger picked half of the total time played from when u posted this to now, you would have already begun to see so much improvement. never too late to learn!
Great video man, definitely is marks tone live. However with a lot of research and videos i have looked at I believe the pickup used on the record is the middle pickup. Still a great video and the tone is awesome🤙🏼
You should give it a go with SRV`s Lenny that he wrote for his wife. You will find that this melody is one of the worlds best bluesballads ever. Some of the most beautyful guitarplaying. And last. millions try to find Stevies sound. No easy task to hit 100 %

@@ArturBrzozowski444 I just came up from the basement after doing some Sultan's on my Strat which has a DiMarzio fat Strat 1 in the middle, it's close but I really feel like he used some effects on there with a subtle chorus maybe a hint of a flange definitely delay and Reverb and compression n all that stuff was done in the studio as well. I don't have too many hairs left to pull so I'm just going to accept defeat and do what I can to have fun! Lol 😊
I couldn't figure this video out. There are so much opinions on fingerpicking but diffuse this at the end when the demo was not like the recorded version. Tone was OK
Great tone! I think the rhythm sounds good but is not 100 per cent accurate as Dire Straits played some kind of rumba. You can find isolated tracks from the original recording here on UA-cam. When you listen to it you will hear what I mean.
Haha good eye! But that's a Boss looper that I had on there to try and get the intro going on a loop but it didn't work so well and didn't make the final cut ;) //G
@@ThomannsGuitarsBassesthanks for the video. would be very useful if you also did a how to play the song tutorial. Hit the tone is fantastic but for people trying to learn the song there aren't always videos available to help with that. For viewers, just hitting the tone is like wearing a Nascar driver's outfit without actually having a driver's license 😄

I love this “head to toe” series!
Again I’ll ask, When tone fingers will be in stock? Smarter fingers than mine anyway?
Request for sometime, Desire buy OZZY!!!

Yes! MK, the master himself! 😍🎸

You nail it!!!
I was actually listening to sultans of swing the very moment I saw the notification for this video
Good playing, good sound...well done!
First video I like from this series.
Anything by the “Hives” would be amazing! Cool video, thank you
Guillaume - great job, you seem like a nice fella too. Thanks for all your hard work. My request is for Ram Jam - Black Betty 👍
Thank you so much Michael! //G
FINALLY thank you!!!❤️
Oui oui oui ! 🎸

Great Video. 👍 what about Blackout from the Scorpions

I would love to see some fleetwood mac.
Great lesson. Next, do Apostle or Albatross by Peter Green.
First off... Thank you. You got it right. All of it. It's yours. Now it's up to me. If I want to make it mine....? I need to go to work. Later!
He used "Music Man" amps a lot in the beginning. (also by Leo Fender 😉}
Could you pls do the calling elvis sound. And maybe money for nothing and brother in arms sound. I really want those sounds
Great video man, definitely is marks tone live. However with a lot of research and videos i have looked at I believe the pickup used on the record is the middle pickup. Still a great video and the tone is awesome🤙🏼
Nailed it. Would love to see some Buckethead.
Day 2 or 3 i dont remember 😂😂😂
Can you make mr Crowley ???? pls!!!
The Fender hot rod deluxe tweed should be your signature amp on Thomann
There is another consensus which i share in which he changed middle pick up with an FS1 Di Marzio
If you listen to the isolated solo, I think we can clearly hear he uses the middle pick up!

Well Mark have also some "Les Paul" tunes for you. 😉
To name a few: Brothers in Arms, Money for nothing, Whyaye man
Challenge: comfortably numb tone 2nd solo from the Pulse live version!
Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms
Billy gibbons should be Nice Guillaume , continue ton bon travail ;)

Great video! We need Come Together from The Beatles!
Anyone ever asks me what people mean by strats having “bell like tone” I just point them to Dire Straits. 😀
Tu vas finir par me convertir à la guitare... 😅
Julia, à l'aide !
Hahaha rejoins le côté obscur de la force 😂🤘//Guillaume

pretty carolina by jontha links
Anything of metallica
He might have used just middle pup for last solo as well as neck middle ...orange squeezer
no reverb on vibrolux...done in studio..I think. But most important- you play it well and tone is pretty dam close. Bravo
Next Song, no joke, the title melody of the animated series "super Wings" in the German version. That would be funny🤘
Hmmmmmmmm i wonder why i can see a DS-1 on that pedalboard 🤨

Languishing longingly for lovely legato loops lost ... WE’LL FIX IT IN POST!!! 🤣🤣
Show de bola
Yeah really god tone
Funk 49 - James Gang
Get to the tone of the Rolling Stones. Start me Up would be cool. Or Satisfaction but that is probably a little bit overdone.
That's been recorded and will be coming out in the following weeks !:) // G

NiCE clickbait ! Where is Mark
A banjo song played on the guitar. Even the solos. Go figure. 😄
