Absolutely! It drives me crazy when I see a news story about some guy who stuffed a bunch of great cars into a warehouse or barn and then just left them to sit and decay. I don't mind a rich guy who actually uses his money in a way that gives others some pleasure too, like Jay. I'll never own anything like these cars, but thanks to rich guys who don't just hide their jewels in a vault, these men share their love with us plebeians.
Jay, this without a doubt this is my favorite all time car. It is beautiful beyond description. I remember when I was a kid and saw a Lincoln Zephyr in a garage in Petaluma Ca. I thought it was this car. I was young and dumb but I was young. I so enjoy your web casts. For an old gentleman like me who is not wealthy but an avid car fans it's like I actually get to experience these wonderful pieces of art. Thank you so much. John
I love this episode, I've watched it several times. It's an absolutely spectacular car, and the look on the old guys face when the transmission doesn't work is priceless. It worked before Jay lol
Most beautiful cars ever made. I had a book of the worlds greatest cars as a child back in the 1970's and I'd stare at a picture of a light blue colored Talbot Lago for hours. I decided then that this was absolutely the best looking car ever made, and I still do consider it that way.
The pre select gear box sounds cool. I was disappointed it didn't work and it looked like Peter was frustrated about it not working also. but that's the life of a car enthusiast, something like this seems to always go wrong especially at special times like this when Jay Leno is driving your car... Beautiful car btw.
Dealing with a complicated electro-mechanical device like an 80-year-old pre-selector gearbox is like unto keeping an antique watch working correctly - hard to find the "guy" to get it that way; hard to keep it that way; likely to be as much a frustration as a pleasure. Great when it's working correctly.
Sorry Jay but no one's going to confuse this for a new concept car. It looks like a 30's era car and that's ok. It doesn't have to be timeless to be beautiful.
I understand why you posted that comment. But if you know Jay you understand that some of his comments are meant to compliment the forward thinking of the design and engineering. Figoni and Falaschi created some of the most stunning artworks in automotive history, with achingly beautiful designs. If you think something like this is amazing in a video, it pales in comparison to witnessing in person. I've been fortunate enough to see some of these very artworks at a few Concours events, and they're just drop-dead gorgeous. I've even seen the 1939 Delahaye shown on the turntable in the brief footage of Mr. Mullin's museum, which also made an appearance in one of the Transformers movies. These Figoni and Falaschi designs always attract enormous crowds at such events, as you might well imagine.

well, you literally have to modernize it in order to put it on the road today, but the car looks absolutely amazing, far better than any driving around today
Well, I just learned I've been mispronouncing the name of my very first car for 61 years!! I grew up not too far from Jay, in Reading, Ma and in 1958, at age 14, I wanted an old car to work on. My Dad was in an English car phase (He had a Hillman) and somehow, his friends at "British Continental Motors" in Boston convinced him they had the perfect car for me to work-on. For $100.00, they delivered to my driveway an English 1949 Sunbeam Talbot 90. Since then I had always pronounced it "TalBOT", now I learn it's "TalBEAU. I guess you're never too old to learn a thing or two. Though it didn't run at the time (and never did) the body was in great condition and had a lot of the design elements of the Talbot-Lago: similar front end though the headlights were in the fenders, those fenders were gracefully curved in that same teardrop style, into the rest of the body, the back half of which was rather boxy. Unfortunately, even just getting a set of Whitworth spanners took 6 months and getting engine parts near impossible. It ended up departing my driveway the same way it came: on a hook.

He did ages ago. Pretty much all of his older (more than three years) videos were deleted around the time that they started putting videos on here vs. his old website. I sure miss his 1934 Packard 12 video as well as his Duesenbergs! :(
Chris Stockslager yes. I sure wish they would upload, or make them in the newer 20-30 min format. I know that’s asking a lot given the amount of cars that would involve, but these videos are a undying archive of these fine cars/ vehicles.
In the late seventies my dad bought a Bugatti Type 57 with a one off body from the english coach builder Gurning Nutting. The car had previously been on display in the Briggs Cunningham museum in Irvine California. My brother and I used drive it around the neighborhood before we had our licenses. He sold it in the late eighties to someone in Switzerland who apparently still drives it.
People my age (29) always talk about their poster car when they were kids. Mostly it's the Countach, Testarossa etc. But no joke, mine was this exact car, in black! My grandma gave me the poster as it was my grandpa's favourite car. I still think this is the ultimate when it comes to beauty. Thanks for the vid, and maybe do a new vid when the gear selector is working.
Worked for a company that did security for Merl Norman. They were building a Talbot almost from scratch in about 2005. Most beautiful car I've ever seen.
This guy explaining why he thinks this is the most beautiful french car, and the whole "teardrop" and "nature" thing gosh it just completely blew my mind. He sounds so authentic and enthusiastic because, actually, it's true, you just can't improve on nature, this car as it stands still looks so right and i just can't see anything wrong with it. Huge respect for that gentlemen. I'm not a huge fan of vintage cars but this changed my way of looking at cars forever! Great Video
A painfully beautiful car. Almost surreal. Perfect shape, timeless lines!!! We need to leave it to the French that their car production in pre-war time was unmatched in performance and style. Breathtaking...
Peter Mullins is to be commended for assembling a museum of all fantastic French cars. In Oxnard no less. I better start planning a trip. I'd love to see them before i die. Honestly, i think it will give my life greater meaning.
If owned that car, I would have looked sick too. I'd be terminally embarassed my car wouldn't performed correctly. Even more so with the whole world watching.
What a special car! So cool that Jay does these videos, one can really learn a lot about cars and car history watching these episodes. Hats off to you Mr. Leno!
@@gregorytimmons4777 The Cord has an electromechanical preselector, this is a purely mechanical preselector, that may or may not appear to work similarly..
Jay made the point early in the video that it is a VERY complicated mechanism... and as anyone should know, the more sophisticated the plumbing the easier it is to clog the drain.
These are my favorite cars of all time and the Mullin Museum in Oxnard is a must visit for any car lover. Thanks to Peter Mullin for making it available to the public.
Mr. Pinkshirt....the perfect shape in nature is a sphere. A teardrop is the shape of a liquid attached to something just before it breaks free. A raindrop may start out as a sphere but due to wind resistance its shape distorts as it falls to Earth. At no time will it become an aerodynamic "teardrop" .
Nothing more beautiful than Art Decô cars. Same goes to building architecture and designs in general. It has the perfect balance of looking techy and classic at the same time
It was disappointing that the gear box was stuck, but I have to admit that the car is so special that I'd be afraid to even touch it. I'd put my paws all over a Veyron, but this car is really an art object. It is to me one of the few cars that really deserves the velvet rope treatment.
Ya know .. It is really awesome to actually see these cars actually on the road ... My father had a Packard Duesenberg for years and never drove them .. I asked him why not . he said the cost to get it repaired wold bankrupt him .. Thanks Jay for sharing your collection of priceless cars ...
Except Morgan screwed up the front-end by putting the headlights into the fenders .. just like Jay said "lesser designers" would do.. :D Don't get me wrong: I like the Aero, but that cross-eyed look on its face always ruined it for me. Well, that and the very rear which looks "stuck on". This thing however .. wow! They really don't make em like they used to ...
1SaG The rear end on this is a little mixed compared with the front ...... but I think the rear is often a little bit of an after thought , and sometimes in large companies designed by a different designer .
Glad there are people who recognize and preserve these beautiful old vehicles. You get the feeling Jay still enjoys them the way they were intended. This other guy, less so. Kind of a crime to just fart around discussing the dry facts of its existence.
+bcdhifi Leno owns more valuable cars than this old fart ever set eyes on. If Leno "Hurt his precious gem" he could and would make it right and make it work. Lets put it this way, who would you rather spend a day talking and working around cars with, Leno or this old pretentious dude.
+rheniformer Honestly you don't know what you are talking about and must be ignorant of Peter Mullin. I'd guess jay broke it, frankly jay is an awful driver and he couldn't even hold a slide in an frs. I love you jay but you need to spend about 6 months at bondurant and then another 6 at skip barber. Btw thats also about a 5-8+ million dollar car that will only go up, but remember he has had it for 30 years but does he sell it? No he spends his money on it and taking it around so fans can see it. Talbot Lago is just as respectable and sought after brand as Bugatti. I love how everyone judges a guy by how he looks instead of all the wonderful information he provides. You Sad humans belong under my shoe.
+rheniformer I forgot about this comment and don't know what kind of soap box I was on that day to make such strong comments about the man and his car. Reading it today I recognize how I would feel about it if it was someone else's comment I will leave my original comment on to remind myself and validate your responses. I just own some crappy get me to work vehicles and I might have a worse look on my face under similar circumstances. I don't really think Jay is a bad driver and I may have got carried away in Jay's defense because of what a big dent it would make in my bucket list to spend an hour in his garage.
There is a reason he owns this car . . . I think the key to all this is that Jay wasn't pushing the clutch all the way down to the floor. Apparently the mechanical linkage required the disengagement and shift, and Jay didn't achieve the shift. A follow-up showing a reset or adjustment to the linkage would have made a great clip . . . Yes, he was grimacing as Jay drove it! Reminds me of the first time my Dad let me learn using a clutch/5-speed in his Fiat 124 coupe. I did manage to learn in one session the W-clutch/accelerator moves and even doing turnarounds.
This is a real car. I work at an oreilleys yesterday a lady came in and asked for a light on her hyundai elantra. She didnt know it was called a headlight. Car culture is really really actually dying. Im 18 i own a 68 chevy impala. Please more young people get into car culture. Its dying. You can do it! Dont doubt yourself!

I also have a 2101 from 1971 (got it when I was 17), but this is stored in a garage at the moment and I should carry on the body restoration which I started few years ago. Then I have 21063 from 1988 which is a summer car and my daily driver is Ford Sierra 1987.
Do you know what Clutch is for Women? I don't see it wrong if they just regard a car as a transportation. Actually it's nice if you don't have to worry about touching your car and just hand the credit card instead of trying to fix on your own. think about that.
It's good to hear that these museum owners have such a high level of appreciation of the gorgeous creations that they would sit and look at them rather than buy an investment and hoard them. Beautiful period for motoring.
The most beautiful pre-war... Could never visit the wonderful collection of Mr.Mullin, but had the chance to see some of the cars once at Retromobile and Concours of Elegance, like the Hispano-Suiza Dubonnet... Very very good taste for cars!! So special ...so beautiful...
I thought the same but I wasn't going to say anything that guy there just might have the power to have one of his minions in several different countries chase you down and whack you and if you really piss him off just might eat you
Gorgeous car in and out. Too bad the gearbox malfunctioned on Jay's watch. I know-how the owner felt. I let a distant relative drive my MGTF back in 1973 and he dogged first gear and broke some teeth. Making matters worse 1st and reverse shared the same cluster gear which was unavailable for years to come. I sold the car at a loss to someone willing to hunt down another working transmission. Always regretted letting that guy drive my car. In this case it did not look like Jay Leno mishandled this Talbot Lago. But by the owner's expression it seemed he believed it was Jay. Thanks for a great presentation.
I think Jay was drooling over this car. When he opened the door and looked inside and said oh man. You could tell he really, really likes this car. It is beautiful. Those tires are so skinny!
It turns out that Jay doesn’t always drive the cars brought in. There are episodes where the owners are the ones doing the driving, although, as I am typing this right now, I can’t tell youse guys exactly which ones they were, but I’ve seen a couple over the years! Keep an eye out for examples, they are out there.
A truly exquisitely beautiful and fast car of the era. My Daimler Special Sports has an overdrive preselector gearbox but coupled with a fluid flywheel. No clutch just a pedal to shift. However you must understand how these gearboxes operate and adjust engine revs a little to match then changes are fast and seamless. I am sure Jay was well aware of all this but elected for discretion. Parts basically don't exist. So if you need a part. You get some one to make it as I have done. Magnificent, thanks for sharing.
Thank you Mr. Mullin for bringing this automotive gem and letting jay drive it, which by proxy we came along for the ride. word being Many say the most beautiful automobile of all time. many people were right.
Here is the problem with this cars ( in current time ). You can see on the owners face that he almost get's a heart-attack by even touching it. With that there is now way to actually enjoy the car.

The face on poor old Peter in the car after Jay relished the gear select is broke. Peter is probably saying to himself, I just drove It a thousand miles than gave it to you to drive and you break it!.
Some of this tech in that day and age truly is amazing. I like the Cotal pre selector concept as it immediately changes the gear without a button, pedal, etc
Jay - PLEASE do a part 2 after someone gets the tranny repaired. It was too sad of an ending to such a romantic and otherwise near perfect episode on one of my favorite cars. PLEASE?

A painfully beautiful car. Almost surreal. Perfect shape, timeless lines!!! We need to leave it to the French that their car production in pre-war time was unmatched in performance and style. Breathtaking...
Absolutely timeless car - thank you for showing us this masterpiece
@Hello Jeffrey how are you doing?
Peter Mullins is to be commended for assembling a museum of all fantastic French cars. In Oxnard no less. I better start planning a trip. I'd love to see them before i die. Honestly, i think it will give my life greater meaning.
Notice : Jay didn't lean on the paint job for this car.
One of the most beautiful cars ever made. Wish someone would do this today.
"What's this red light here?" - "It goes on when we have a problem." - "Ah, okay."
😁🤪👍👍👍
Yeah that was a funny answer
I wonder if it came on when the car failed to shift.
Elegant, beautiful, and timeless! I think I'll give this video to my brother as a birthday hint for my upcoming 71st!
Thank you for sharing this.
During the drive the owner looks like he is going to be sick....
This is a multi-million dollar car, I guess he was worried about somebody else driving it.
Leno!
i think it didn't shift right cause jay was doing something wrong, and the guy didn't want to make Jay look bad
LucasLand Jay owns a Cord with the same type box. Probably knows how to work it.
Jay's problems started when he couldn't get it into neutral at the garage.
and i think your opinion is pointless and not worth too much, since you don't have a car like this.
These are my favorite cars of all time and the Mullin Museum in Oxnard is a must visit for any car lover. Thanks to Peter Mullin for making it available to the public.
Absolute masterpiece!
Very seriously, the first car I ever fell head over heels in love with.
The "tear drop" was the most beautiful shape in early automotive design.
one of my favorite Hot Wheels of all time was a Talbot Lago that looked just like this- absolutely beautiful piece of art
Honestly not a huge fan of the color, would much prefer to see the original blue. Hard to fault a car so stunningly beautiful however.
I dunno, I love the color. It would be interesting to see the original though.
Now that's some serious craftsmanship and a amazing restoration.
Flick Cogswell
*slow clap...
Now we all know where the styling from the Morgan Aero is derived from
looking for this comment :D
I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that Morgan's were derived from 1940s Jaguars maybe some inspiration from this too
Except Morgan screwed up the front-end by putting the headlights into the fenders .. just like Jay said "lesser designers" would do.. :D
Don't get me wrong: I like the Aero, but that cross-eyed look on its face always ruined it for me. Well, that and the very rear which looks "stuck on".
This thing however .. wow! They really don't make em like they used to ...
YouDontWannaFightMe XK 120 ...............
Kind of a crime to just fart around discussing the dry facts of its existence.
that gearbox is pretty cool!
well it seems I spoke too soon ahha
It's kind of like the first generation automated manual transmissions.
@@RussellRobinson77 hahahahaa
A beautiful area. I had I Talbot Lago T26 GS Saoutchik Coupe in red for 32 years in the uk.
That guy had the whole "look, don't touch" thing going on. HERE LET ME HELP YOU OPEN THAT
+bcdhifi Leno owns more valuable cars than this old fart ever set eyes on. If Leno "Hurt his precious gem" he could and would make it right and make it work. Lets put it this way, who would you rather spend a day talking and working around cars with, Leno or this old pretentious dude.
+rheniformer honestly both seem like good people the elderly man is just more serious about things.
I have to give the Frenchys credit... This is one of the most artistic cars I have ever scene... thanks guys..
Dont doubt yourself!
my man! im 22 and work at the oreillys in michigan and i couldnt agree with you more! my cars a little newer than yours but its part of the family. 1977 Corvette 4 speed!
James Bukkaki I'm also 18 and I have a 1977 Lada 2101 a real classic!
James Bukkaki 68 impala 🤤🤤🤤
I also have a 2101 from 1971 (got it when I was 17), but this is stored in a garage at the moment and I should carry on the body restoration which I started few years ago. Then I have 21063 from 1988 which is a summer car and my daily driver is Ford Sierra 1987.
Do you know what Clutch is for Women? I don't see it wrong if they just regard a car as a transportation. Actually it's nice if you don't have to worry about touching your car and just hand the credit card instead of trying to fix on your own. think about that.
Solid piece of automotive history. Thanks, Peter and Jay,
it would be cool to hear what was wrong with the gearbox. beautiful car :)
This car is so beautiful, so refined, that it really does take ones breath away.
really nice video! never seen this before and so in depth!
love me some Jay Lenos garage
It's good to hear that these museum owners have such a high level of appreciation of the gorgeous creations that they would sit and look at them rather than buy an investment and hoard them. Beautiful period for motoring.
The old guy was freaking out when Jay was driving
The most beautiful pre-war...
Could never visit the wonderful collection of Mr.Mullin, but had the chance to see some of the cars once at Retromobile and Concours of Elegance, like the Hispano-Suiza Dubonnet...
Very very good taste for cars!!
So special ...so beautiful...
That dude would make me uncomfortable. Actually he did, and I wasn't even there.
Couldn't have said it better myself
He has a look on his face like this activity is beneath him..and actually, it might be lol
@Hello Charles how are you doing?
Jay, your turn signal IS ON (19:00)! "I always turn them off", what a laugh.
Not just at 19:00, but for the whole drive! (see my previous comment)
I think Jay was drooling over this car. When he opened the door and looked inside and said oh man. You could tell he really, really likes this car. It is beautiful. Those tires are so skinny!
I'm thinking that maybe it would have been better to let the owner drive it in this case. He didn't look the least relaxed about it. Just sayin'...
El Kabong would you? He wanted that experience
Yes, but people bringing their cars to Jay Leno's garage know that he's going to drive it
It turns out that Jay doesn’t always drive the cars brought in. There are episodes where the owners are the ones doing the driving, although, as I am typing this right now, I can’t tell youse guys exactly which ones they were, but I’ve seen a couple over the years! Keep an eye out for examples, they are out there.
@@elkabong6429 Oh, actually now that you mention it, I think I have seen one before
RandomCity Almost all of the guests let Jay drive their cars, fahsure, but once in a while...
Jay broke it...
Now he can make an offer to buy it...
Sneaky, but I doubt that guy is ever giving that up. He looked like Jay was taking his daughter out on a date, he was so nervous but brave as well.
With that there is now way to actually enjoy the car.
ilcool90 But he said he just drove it on a 1,000 mile rally in Europe.
ilcool90 So you didn't actually listen...
Esa Edvik
Yes I did. He used it on a special occasion.
He said he races other talbots than this one. Who isn't listening?
***** Very well said, Sir. I agree with respect for you.
OUTSTANDING.!! .. THIS IS WHY I LOVE YOUR UA-cam CHANNEL JAY..!!
Thanks to Peter Mullin for Sharing this Beautiful Automobile with us.! EXCELLENT CAR.!
That's what Peter gets for dissing Jay's Bugattis.
Love the respect Jay shows for this work of Art!
The face on poor old Peter in the car after Jay relished the gear select is broke. Peter is probably saying to himself, I just drove
It a thousand miles than gave it to you to drive and you break it!.
Bet the transport guys broke it....preselector gearbox...what's that?
Some of this tech in that day and age truly is amazing. I like the Cotal pre selector concept as it immediately changes the gear without a button, pedal, etc
Art Deco.... such a beautiful aesthetic. The height of western civilisation?
No. The ancient Greeks.
@@AmericasChoice that wasn't the height, more the wonderful beginning, surely?
@@Dave.S.TT600 No. It has all been downhill since then.
Jay - PLEASE do a part 2 after someone gets the tranny repaired. It was too sad of an ending to such a romantic and otherwise near perfect episode on one of my favorite cars. PLEASE?
@Hello Gran how are you doing?
Jay subscribes to the you break it you bought it credo. Great way to score this car from Peter.
Man, that is a beautiful car when stationary. But when moving, it is otherworldly. Absolutely stunning.
…even with the right-hand trafficator permanently out? Jay was just taking it for a quickie "around the bock" :)
1936 Mercedes 500K roadster has to be one of if not the most beautiful car ever.
I have watched this video so many times. Beautiful car. Not what a rain drop looks like but doesn't matter.
Amazing! more Deco cars please!
Thank you Peter & Jay, Beautiful beautiful car!
When is Jay opening a museum
I have believed that the most beautiful car I’ve ever seen was a Hispano-Suiza that Mr. Mullins also owns. I think I might have a new favorite with this car. Thanks for doing this video!
