The Streamliner Case - Mercedes-Benz original

  • The restoration of the 540 K Streamliner represents one of the most complex projects ever undertaken by Mercedes-Benz Classic. Virtually every part needed no longer existed, so every detail either needed to be created or tracked down in the Mercedes-Benz Classic Collection. But how far back in time did Mercedes-Benz have to go to complete this complex restoration project? All the way back to 1938, when this vehicle was first built, to help build a unique, one-off creation. In 1938, the Special Vehicle Production Unit at the Sindelfingen Plant spent every single day, year after year, building the very finest exclusive cars. The plant developed a certain routine, and their modern-day successors at Mercedes-Benz Classic encountered the question time and time again during various stages of their work: “How did they do that?” Overcoming these challenges and improving the original methods helped make the new 540 K Streamliner restoration as precise as possible. lol, you haven't worked on many modern ones then, they don't support bugger all, a MB is just a status symbol now, normal run of the mill day to day vehicles are made BER by the time they're about 15-20, never mind reaching 70 like this.

@@glennmoore5880 I don’t know how modern we’re talking here. The most modern MBs I’ve owned have been the M113 and M112 engines with the 5g tronic trans. That set up has worked great for me. I’ve seen some modern fails like with my mother’s W203 (c class)that had transmission issues because of coolant getting mixed in the trans fluid. She has a C207 (E coupe) now so the verdict is still out on that one. Any Mercedes I buy is second hand maybe third so I look for tried and true and I’m not even considering cost cutting A-classes or C-classes. Quality may not be what it was back in the good old days but I think parts will still be available for them.

@@glennmoore5880 My experience is that my US-made R-Classes (I owned two different ones) were less than perfectly made with issues with the self-levelling suspension and the gasoline engine in my R350 (the diesel in my R320 was fine), but the repairs were handled under warranty including a malfunctioning HID headlamp. My 2001 C-class wagon was fine, but was a pig in the snow. My wife's SLK320 was flawless, period. My 2014 GLK250 has been e joy from new, but it did require a replacement particle filter (handled under warranty) and a steering box recall because on some cars some bolts were corroding and it was also subjected to the worldwide Takata airbag recall.

@@omostim2385 The big caution with buying a used Mercedes is that it needs to come with a full service history which must also show that only approved fluids were used and all the work was performed by a competent marque specialist. If it doesn't have that, you should walk away no matter how attractive the price. MB has always had entry-level models and they are still supported by the factory.
Edit: on 2nd thought, I don't imagine the X-class will have much support in the future, being that it's a rebadged VW and not at all an actual Mercedes.

Great Car, Great recovery and reconstruction, Great team, Great company, Great history, Great video. I and my wife have owned 17 Mercedes Benz Automobiles over the last 47 years. My first one was a 300 SEL 6.3 L sedan, and after that car, I was hooked. In 1993 I had one of the first 500E automobiles that came to America. And I will say that I once went 140 miles per hour in one of my Mercedes automobiles. And now I am till driving a Mercedes SUV at the age of 77. And I will continue to purchase and drive a Mercedes forever.

Likewise, I have owned many Mercedes over the years, the 1st model being a 1956 220S which my father gave me when he purchased his 'new' 1963 220SE😁
Fast forward over 50 years and (having tried a Jaguar XJ6, a Volvo 244, Open Ascona, Citröens) i am still driving Mercedes cars to this day.
My favourite was my beautiful W140 S320, what a sweet engine that car had and the drive comfort was sublime.
I am just about to purchase my late friends W124 300D which has only covered (a Mercedes-Benz documented) 53,000 miles from new👍🏻

These were the major pioneering times for the auto industries were almost every day people were bringing completely new ideas to the design table. These days it is more about details than major steps with common parts and unified layouts to keep production cost down.
Without cars like this we would not have the cars of today.
My favourite bit is when the Head of Mercedes Historic just says we will rebuild this car there is never any discussion of budget or outright costs .
For sure the car value can never be worked out it would break all sales records if sold on the open market I would guess even as an fully rebuilt car.
I am glad they did this before Covid hit and the Financial fall out that we are now starting to see taking place .

Years ago I had a Mercedes, serviced by the dealers. A truck ran into the car while it was parked. I had a good friend who owned a bodywork repair company. I first took the car to the dealers, mentioned my friend could repair it. The service manager took my arm. He said you are free to take the car there. But we would prefer if you would use us. Many appreciative comments already made here and below, and somehow one very important point has not been addressed. Whilst every country and society has added much to the development of humanity forming our modern world, no group has ever out classed the developmental engineering accomplishments of the 1930s German people. it's this kind of stuff that made me want to become a mechanic. too bad these days no one cares about quality anymore its just how fast you can get a vehicle in and out of the shop and not pay attention to detail. as long as it runs who cares!

I don't know much about cars, but in the United States at least, Mercedes has always been synonymous with quality, style, and performance. This video is proof that it was as important in the 1930's as it is today. Incredible!

Everyone has done a remarkable job of producing the car and the documentary!!! But I'd especially like to thank ERIC HANSEN, the voice-over talent. What a marvelous voice and fantastic delivery - smooth, exciting when necessary and dramatic at the right moments! Extremely pleasant to listen to. Yes, this is coming from someone in the voice-over industry, but I RARELY hear the quality he delivers in this marvelous production! Thanks ALL and thanks Eric!!!!!!!!

Danke. From the discovery of the frame to the final test run this has been a gripping well produced story of an engineering and design masterpiece allowing us to see this beautiful Phoenix rising from the ashes to its full glory.
Watched the M-B video about the Silver Arrows just before finding this video. The Silver Arrow video brought to life the stories my father told me about his fascination with those wonderful racing marvels as a young boy in the thirties, following the newspaper stories and the news reels. Wish that I could have shared these videos with him before he passed.
    Again, thank you very much.

He looks like a WW1 soldier. I would expect him to climb out of a submarine. But when he talks, I can spot where he comes from in a 15km radius.
Where I was born, within 40km, there was an car company, that build such a car in a small series. The Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic, same type engine, but only 3.2l, 190km/h with the 175hp version, and up to 225 with slightly more compressor pressure.
      Back to Mercedes:
Unfortunately MB did not produce this car. The Americans would have bought them all.

@@christopherdesbaux5950 they said American (or British?) soldiers took it away from the Goodyear test area. So I expect it was after May 8th 1945.

    It’s a love for such attention to detail that has led to my owning at least one of every S-Klasse (or predecessor series) since my 1955 W180 220a, including W111 220 Sb, W112 300 SE coupé, W108 280 SE, W116 280 SE, W126 300 SE, and C126 500 SEC (my current driver) - 17 in total (though none of them purchased new). I've also owned two W201s (a 180 E and a 190 E) and a W124 300 E.

WoW that was amazing 🤩. Now this is how classic cars should be built and we can put in the modern emphasis like the headlights in air condition the comforts of today's cars yet having the classic look of yesterday. Car manufacturers to take this into account and do these retro cars as some of the production cars and their sales 💰💰💰would go up. Amen 💥👍😇
