This guy has been fantastic in introducing the Oud. One thing he told me that has really struck me as profound was his explanation of the Oud as an extension of our primary instrument, that is our voice, but one we sing through our hands with. The idea of the Oud being a part of my voice means that if I can sing it, I can play it, which actually demystified the lack of frets for me. Anyway, my first maquamat (partial scale) will be Maquamat Hijaz, and if anyone is interested in exploring arabic music, I cannot recommend this teacher enough Big love
Let s start a Makam Forum to discuss theory & practice in the Makam World...including Byzantine Modes or echoi. Thumbs up and Applause for Navid who has put effort and time in teaching the Makam System, an important system of microtonal music. Tolgahan Çoğulu from Turkey is promoting a microtonal guitar with movable frets. Now there is also a microtonal keyboard whose keys make up to three sounds depending on what portion of the key you press. These are important news in microtonal music practice.
Wow! Man, thanx for sharing such a knowledge. Just singing those "strange phrases", as my first music teache classsified me Asian music, created a definite feeling that it is now possible to memorize the right ones. Also I liked your saying "You don't have to be a best singer, just do your best". I liked it quite a lot.
Now I wish I had an Oud. Love persian music, especially this instrument and love the way you are teaching it. I teach guitar in a very similar way. I do own a fretless guitar.
I was trying to improvise in Hijaz looking at the wrongly written notes that were not giving the difference between the ascending & the descending sequences. The book I was using is for the even tempered Greek bouzouki.. luckily E. Voulgaris presents microtonal makam theory in Greek. Murat Aydemir presents Turkish makams in their tonal division based on the 34 pitches per octave. His book is in English. The difference between Turkish and Arabic tonal systems is Visible on two neys from the two cultures and on two kanuns from the two cultures. Turkish kanuns have more levers/mandals under each triplet of strings for each note.
Many Thanks Navid.......I cannot read music, so have been looking for the " simple tab " for the various maqams. I can actually see what notes you are hitting in the Maqam. I have looked everywhere for this just like the scales for the guitar, Dorian being one of my favorites!. This is an old video but one I am glad I found. Thanks again
Great lesson🙏..just discover your chennal. Its awesome.👍 I have a question What is the difference between maqam and hijaz. Is it same thing? Plz make a video on basic information about great arabic music their instruments, scales, modes and anything you think is important for us to know. Thank you
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Could you help me with this doubt... I hear a different sound (sharper) of the note A when you play all the notes at minute 2.34, compared with the same A note that you played at the begining of the video... Thanks again
I have no idea. I don't know the western terms for these. You'll gain more though if you try not to compare these to anything you already know from western music. Although it can be helpful sometimes so I understand.
RhythmAddictedState Yes, I have a complete ear training program for about 17 maqams. I'll be announcing enrolment at the end of February. To hear about it, sign up for the newsletter at oudforfuitarists.com
Ohhhh, when tuning the Oud i recently purchased i am constantly have to push the tuning pegs in to get them to stick......seems a good word to me...is there a way to remedy this? I bought this from Amazon and it had some pretty good ratings but...................nobody mentioned this. Plus I guess it could be a one off!
hello navid, wanted to ask you about your the masterclass course. Does it contain farid alatrash rabeei taqseem, if no then where in which course do i find it. Second, what does notation even mean... does it mean you will show me a video about how to play it or simply notes on paper.
I had bought a used oud and known nothing of tuning, strings (it may need a new set of strings) I would highly appreciate your reply. Where are u? Are u in the US or elsewhere?
I'm in Canada. first you need to figure out what type of oud you have, then you can choose strings. email me at support@oudforguitarits.com and tell me about your oud and send some pics and I'll try to tell you what type it is. as for strings and tuning visit oudstrings.com.
You will be sent an email with the link to download. Check your spam folder, or promotions folder in your email if you didn't get the email. E-mail me at support @ oudforguitarists.com if you don't find the email.
Hi it's D, Eb, F#, G, A, Bb, C, D. Sometimes it's played with B quarter flat. It's not possible to play that on piano. On guitar just bend the Bb slightly
That's a good question. But for this exercise it's irrelevant. I don't think I use any particular temperament, but it would be closer to just temperament, but only for the 4th and 5th in relation to the 1st.

Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you're gaining something from these videos.
That's kind of the same thing Fred McDowell used to say--he'd make his guitar sing what he sang with his voice.

You are an angel sent down from heaven. THANK YOU!!
This was so easy to follow and practise.
This video is really really good. I usually sing the notes as "sa ri ga ma pa dha ni sa" or "do re mi (movable do or fixed do)."

Maqam refers to "mode", Hijaz is the name of the mode. Maqam Hijaz can be translated as Mode Hijaz.
Thank you so very much !
So the hijaz scale (starting from D) is D - Eb - F# - G- A- then a quarter-tone between Bb and B - C - D?
that quarter tone only occasionally... normal form is with a Bb, at least in arabic maqam, turkish is a bit different overall...
You are amazing
Glad you enjoyed it.
thank you sir
Man.. this is so fucking helpful!

In the ascending direction
Is the Maqam Hijaz the same as the Phrygian Dominant Scale?

Thank you! That was very helpful.
Hi, why can't I download the music sheets? I would really appreciate assistance so I could follow your entire excellent lecture! Thanks in advance.
I just tested it and it worked fine for me, but if it's not working for you just email me at support@oudforguitarists.com and I'll email it to you. :)
hello Nabih whats your oud name i like the sound
Thank you so much! Do you have any ear training videos for the other maqams (bayati, rast, kurd, etc...)?
RhythmAddictedState Yes, I have a complete ear training program for about 17 maqams. I'll be announcing enrolment at the end of February. To hear about it, sign up for the newsletter at oudforfuitarists.com
What is the oud tuning please?
So much out there
I usually use CFADgc low to high string

Peg compound is good, everybody knows about it. It's helpful. Pencil graphite also works wonders if you're having problems with sticky pegs.
the melody from the hijaz lesson sounds so familiar, anyone can help me with classic song names that were based on that tune?
It's a standard klezmer scale
Lots of tunes
Fifth mode of the harmonic minor scale
Prince of Egypt “river lullaby”
Misirlou is a classic song that uses this maqam
What kind of scale is that
Beautiful!
It's not only a scale. it's maqam hijaz.
Hello ! Thank you for the lessons
Please may i know what wood are made of your oud’s back and face ?
Cheers
Mohamed Benjelloun face is Canadian spruce, the back is rosewood, and something else I forgot.

May be by teaching a maqam or what ever it's better say a famous example like maqam hijaz and messenger film music directed by Egypt director
Doesnt let me download accompanying sheet music after typing in my email and name

Hey man question
Is this the same Oud that Charbel Rouhana uses?
Maybe not the same brand but the number of strings and the tuning should be the same.
Hi , what base tuning are you using for this?
i think he uses C-F-A-D-G-C from the low string
wow
Can you please do a song only video, just playing the song a bit slower at first
You can slow the playback speed in the setting up there☝️
is this Butrus Bishara oud? sounds good
It's a Dimitri Rapakousious Oud.
ASALAM O ALIKOM. sir ALLAH bless you and all. sir my recvest is replay me in comment this notes on piano and gutire thanks
Hi it's D, Eb, F#, G, A, Bb, C, D.
Sometimes it's played with B quarter flat. It's not possible to play that on piano. On guitar just bend the Bb slightly
Dude, the link took my email and didn't direct me to a download!

this training vocal?
You use your voice as your main instrument.
How many maqams are there in total?
At least 7 but each one has varieties so it is safe to say hundreds!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic_maqam
I am obviously new to this so you might, if not already, hear from me from time to time......lol
Level of sound should be higher
Teaching method is ok
please the tablature and notation
El SI lo cantas desafinado, lo haces occidentalizado.
stp a faire une version en arabe
