    I keep returning to this excellent and inspiring performance as I get to know my new Arabic Oud - 6 classic songs: "Midnight Sun", "Ah Ya Zein", "Zeina", Raqsat Al Gamal", "Qadduka Al Mayyas", and "El Rey Nimrod" - all played with such energy, heart and soul - WOW!

    I've been listening to this type of music for awhile now. I love the rhythms and melodies.
    I've finally acquired an oud. It took me awhile to find out what type I had. It's an arabic oud, that way I could find out the tuning and strings to get. Fascinating history. I play guitar and various strings and percussion instruments. I have found your site to be the most informative. I have a lot to learn, but you are a great teacher. Thank you.

      If you live in the Middle East I recommend finding a teacher to get you started.
      If you live in North America or Europe, register on MikeOud Forums. just search for Mikeouds.com. At this forum, you can ask if anyone is in your area and if anyone knows any players or teachers in your city.
      If you have absolutely no music training, it helps to have a teacher in the beginning. But if you have even a little experience playing any music guitar, or piano then you might want to try taking online lessons, either downloadable video lessons or even Skype lessons with a teacher.
      If you live in North America, the best place to buy a good starter Oud is at Mauriceoudshop.com. This is my highest recommendation.
      Good luck and let me know if you need anymore help. Also check out my website at www.oudforguitarists.com

    How is called the technique you use since 1:08 in the video? I'm learning to play the Oud by myself, and I learned the first part of this song until there, but from here on I'm completely lost haha, it sounds like the drone tremolo from one of your other videos, but I can't really tell as I'm new to it. Thanks in advance!

      I'm a music enthusiast, and even though I haven't really learnt to play the guitar, I played for 3 years the violin, and lately I've been trying the mandolin. Since I really enjoyed that but wanted something more "oriental", I went for the oud. And man, that's great to have found your videos. They are helpful and it's motivating me so much! I'm not in a good situation unfortunately, but if I can, I'll put money in your lessons from your website!

      @@gurbeykeskin8256 because the Quran is the sacred scripture of God should be recited in a certain way. You hear beautiful recitations on youtube by professional reciters and sounds beautiful but some others try to bring different melodies into it which is fine as long as it doesnt imitate singing which was forbidden to do by the Prophet Muhammad pbuh not to imitate the jews and christians who would sing. The Quran is the most divine as you can tell when you listen to recitations. My favourite is Qari Minshawi which you can listen to, he does different maqams but can tell hes not over doing it like some others which makes it like singing. Qari Minshawi Mujawaad which is is a slwoer recitation

I was so confused when you said, that hijaz is critisized by shoolars or evenshould not be applied in quaran reciting (totally my missunderstanding though). Now I got the point! Thanks again

      It depends on where the problem lies with your posture and holding the instrument. There are some things that make it easier, like a foot stool or a carpet stopper material on your leg where the our rests. Some people have a hard time holding the oud. I did too, but the problems disappeared after a couple years. I think it's just time and allowing your body to adjust. I've seen small women play big bowl ouds with little difficulty, so I think it comes down to adjusting your posture to your body type and getting used to it.

      Buy one of those grip Matt's with holes in it that you can get for cabinets and drawers. This will keep you oud from slipping

      I've had good success twice now with sala muzik. They ship worldwide and their ouds are better than darbuka planet imo if you're looking for a beginner oud that is. I own a flat electric and a charred Syrian bowl oud with guitar pegs from them and they're both beautiful sounding

      I have experience with Syrian ouds. From my experience best Syrian ouds are made by Sabsaby. Zeryab makes nice ouds, a bit cheaper than Sabsaby but they are also good. Another notable maker of Oud instruments is Farabi. They are from Aleppo, same quality as Zeryab.

    Maqam is the arabic word for scale?

    • @OudforGuitarists
      @OudforGuitarists  5 років тому +1

      Kind of, but in very simple terms, yes. A maqam is more accurately a "mode". Ultimately you can use scale to talk about a maqam. But there are scales which are virtually exactly the same but are played differently so talking about it like it's just a scale is going to reduce it to the intervals and pitches whereas a maqam can be much more than that.
