how to tap into your cars fuse box safely by using A add a fuse add a circuit PIGGYBACK fuse tap into a car / vehicle fuse box. A complete guide to fitting a add a fuse and where to and how to install it. helps when fitting dash cam fuse tap or car audio. A add a fuse can be a grate way to install something into your car without having to add a fuse to the wiring and just tap a fuse in the fuse box for a feed like how to wire a dash cam/ camera #addafuse #fusetap #piggybackfuse
Finally someone explains the correct way to install a fuse tap well done that man 👍
No worries most people don't watch the whole video so I think most are fitting them wrong lol
Only just found this video and its probably the clearest explanation, with visuals i have come across. 2 Years late, but cheers!
I've been looking around on how to install a fuse tap without a multimeter because I don't own one and I'm glad to see that you showed us how to at the end of the vid. saved me money and saved me from possible electrical issues thx
Legend! Thanks so much. Made it simple, well explained. Perfect. *skips off to fuse box*
Thanks. Didn’t realise you could get the adapter upside down. Great advice!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I had to do this in order to install a dash cam and I had not idea how to go about it. You made it very easy. Thanks!
Thanks for the explanation 👍
Very well explained.
Great to point out that they need to be connected the "right" way, not sure if you have explained the consequence of connecting the wrong way around, which is that the main circuit is still protected by the larger fuse, but the extra circuit is fed through the main fuse, then through the extra fuse, this means that both circuits still have fuse protection, but if the main fuse blows then both circuits are dead. You seem to suggest that the wiring was at risk (its at no more risk than any other fuse protected wiring).
Thanks for this vid. Explains it very well. Answered all my questions 👌
Great Tips, Good Stuff 👍 Thanks!
Great video. Thank you
Very well presented and articulated!!!
Happy New Year 🎊
Thanks!
well done buddy ! great presentation .
Great video. Many thanks. Appreciated.
thanks
Really convenient locations for fuse boxes eh!!
the new merchandise and bmws are ridiculous. got to strip out so much to get to them.
Instead of pulling fuses to test which are ignition controlled use the tiny metal contacts on the outside of the fuse, that's what they are for. A test light works best due to the finer point on the probe but a multimeter can be used. By randomly pulling fuses to install the "add-a-fuse" just for testing you may inadvertently erase some memory circuit. Glad you added the part at the end about correct installation of the "add-a-fuse", thought you were going to leave that part out.
Most people wont have a test light or know how to use a multi meter or own one. The only real issue some might come across is wiping their radio memory or reset the clock by removing its fuse. Everything else will remember its information.
Thanks for your comment.
Good information
Thank you🙂
good lesson. i make car fuse and fuse tap .
Hi, great video very explanatory, as I’m trying to wire something in parallel with the original fuse is it ok not to insert a new second fuse but to use two small wiring spade type terminals into the second fuse holder and put a fuse in the positive new wire to protect the circuit so I can connect the accessory to the two new leads
Sorry it’s long winded
Neil
Just the video I needed for my C tek split charger set up in my Ford Van.. not explained very much in the instructions, but thanks to your video all my questions were answered, clearly, and simply, so thank you for taking the time to make it.. and a big bonus in my mind was, No thirty min American type introduction, and no mind bending "music" or bad attempts at comedy.. Very useful, so thanks ..
No worries glad I could help you out.
Decent video …. Thanks … I need to put a 1 amp inline fuse on mine for my dashcam ..5amp will fry it but that’s straight forward I think …
Putting a high rated fuse does not cause the dashcam to draw more current (as long as there are no faults in it) You could put a 50 amp fuse in and it will still only draw what it is supposed/needs to. The lower amp fuse is to protect the device when there IS a fault. still a good idea to fit the correct one though for its protection in event of a fault.
Yours was a 2 amp that came with your fuse spur. Does it matter if you have a higher fuse that comes with the spur?
What if you cant find anywhere to put the negative. I don't have any close area for the negative lead to go .. especially without paint on.
Also would interior light fuse be OK?
great video, i am going to use it for my first tap and have subscribed. am wondering if on some vehicles the fuse box cover won't go back on because of the elevated tap and what one does then
Haven't found a internal fuse box with a cover that close yet the new aldi and Porsche fuse boxes have a purple cover that fits on top of the fuses ,but you can cut a bit out of one side and it goes back on and helps hold the fuse tap in.
On a old Toyota there was a cover that wouldn't go back on but it was under the dash out the way so left the cover in the glove box
For reference if needed.
Are all piggyback cables side load fuses? ie fuses are at 90deg to the cable plug? I need to add a piggyback but there's a relay either side so no room for the sticking out fuses. Trying to find a piggyback cable you can top load the fuses. Any ideas?
Hey, nice vid. I wanted to hard wire dash cam, but I can't get the fuse tap adapter in the cigar fuse because of some plastic thing next to it. I was wondering what's the next good fuse to tap? I was thinking maybe audio or seat warmer?
Yes anything that switches with the ignition that's not important, like radio, heated seats, rear screen heater.
That splice though :O Needs abit of electical tape. gj though
yer that's was a previous install I sorted it out couldn't leave it like that.
the addendum to the video is correct as long as you have a fuse in the top only (the device side post doesn't connect all the way through, only the source side). that way the difference between the correct way and zig-zagging current through both fuses is determined. without any fuses there will be no voltage/current passed through the add-a-circuit either way.
Exactly what I was trying to get across in the video. Thanks for adding it in the comments aswell👍
My camera system came with mini size fuse taps but my new Ford uses micro fuses so I bought some micro taps. After installing correctly I get no power to cam. Did I miss somthing, is it possible that you can’t just convert from mini to micro?
Hey there so i bought a 2.1mm x 5.5mm DC extention cable and cut one end off
The 2 wires where red and white ?
I was expecting red and black... Any Help ?
Hi thanks for the video. Just have question: the positive comes through fuse tap so where to connect the negative or ground to power a camera? Thanks a lot
Any metal behind the dash . What car do you have?
I wasn’t sure thanks a lot it’s a skoda superb
@@Dehkada driver side or Passanger pop the dash end panel of it's just on clips and you will see a nice bit of unpainted metal earth it to that.
Just what I needed to know. I wasn't sure which way round these things go, so by testing without a fuse in the fuse tap I could confirm I had it in the right way. Thank you!
If my girlfriend is giving me negative vibes can I ground to her?
Good video. I'm about to add a boost gauge to my car which has 4 wires. 12v / 12v ignition / lights / ground. I have tested wires to car stereo with multimeter & found the wires I require. Why is it better to use these tapped fuse connections rather than splice straight into stereo wires with crimped connections? The stereo will already run through fuses at fuse box, so do I really need an extra fuses for the boost gauge or is it simply a neater way to connect rather than cutting stereo wires? Thanks
It's a easy way for people to add items to their cars without removing to much and it's easy to remove when selling the car on and wont interfere with warranty on new cars.
Your car will be modified and I'm sure when you come to sell it on the boost gauge will be staying alone with the other mods so in your case I would wire it to the fuse box or radio or behind the clocks depending on the location of the boost gauge and ease of wiring. Hope this helped
Im going to hardwire a dash cam, I bought two fuse tap for my connections red and yellow. In my case, I have a fuse space that is empty "spare". I just need to hook up the fuse tap adapter into the spare space (no need to put any fuse in the adapter at this point since it was originally empty? )
you might have to put it in both orientations to find it only works one way round.
Quick question, no vid or forum has been able to clarify, but what is the correct orientation of the fuses being added into the fuse tap? So original fuse near fuse side and new fuse near wire side, but which way should the fuse ratinnng numbers be facing? Should they be upside down from each other or both readable from the same side? Thanks. Great vid btw!
it makes no difference as the fuse can be used any way around. it will work any way hope this helps.
What fuse location other than the cigarette lighter is good for a switched feed item like an antenna with a battery connection lead? I've got dash cam in the 15amp ciggy fuse
Is it for a antenna feed? Your radio will have a feed dedicated to a antenna feed, its listed as remote out. Or you can use the 12v switch feed for your radio. Any other questions just ask.
can it be used to power up a 12v reverse camera?
I am trying to hook up led lights motorcycle is that a mini curcuit that i need
Most probabaly you draw from a 10A fuse. In case you need to get power from a fuse of 15-20A, then you need a better fuse adaptor? In most shops and e-shops the adaptors are for 10A. I checked for a 20A one and seems having three times the cost of the 10A one. Also i can find only for mini fuses and not micro like my car has.
What did you want to connect into your car? These are mainly used to get a ignition feed for a dash cam or aftermarket radio. You may have to wire into the fuse box for a higher amperage feed. Most fuse boxes in the car are for 20amps but not much more.
What are you installing?
@@MADMODS Stuff like the ones you wrote allready, dashcams etc.
But if i want to put a 20A device, do i need an adaptor for 20A; Most adaptors say 10A.
Thank you for explaining thoroughly. Noob alert here! So to summarize. Original fuse from car is placed lower near the prongs (on the fuse tap), while the higher/upper fuse needs to be lower amperage than the tapped fuse and at the same time is for the accessory you plan to power up.
Question: if I have a multimeter can I just take out the fuse or find vacant ones to figure out which one has the load or is live?
Yes exactly. And a multi meter is the best way to check the fuses you can test them in place by touching the top metal parts of the fuse when there in place.
Thank you again. I tapped into my fuses for my dashcam and it must've been the reason why my radio blacks out and becomes unusable during the drive. On the 10th generation Honda Accord, it appears each column has alternating live sides based on what my multimeter was showing. So fuses and taps are in as taught and now I have no problems.
There are 2 wires coming off the double pole double throw toggle switch for my tailgate window motor... do one of these just get connected to body ground? I've been using an 18 volt power tool battery for the last few weeks after running new wires just connecting both to the power tabs. These fuse connections only have the one wire. Maybe this isn't the best solution for my bronco?
Electric windows will need to be run through a relay. I'm not sure what you are fitting but if it's a bronco its sounds basic. So I think you would need to follow the instructions that came with your electric windows kit.
Thank you for the video. Just a quick question, is there any polarity for the piggy fuse tap? I saw a video on UA-cam, saying the piggy fuse tap needs to be connected with the right polarity with the fuse box, which i didn't do it when i installed my dashcam. However it was working fine... I am confused.
to be extra safe it's a good idea to get the feed from the correct side of the fuse box but it will work both ways round.
For the last part of the fuse orientation, if the adapter does not turn in your device without fuses and then you put a fuse in while maintaining the same orientation of the adapter and your device turns on then it’s in the correct orientation correct?
Yes that's correct
I can’t figure out this simple step: is the lead from add a fuse used as positive or negative ?? Thanks
it's positive the cars body and metal frame work behind the dash is negitave.
Ok, so.. if I'm using the 12v accessory 13amp fuse slot with one of these. I take that original fuse insert at the top or bottom? and then do I need to add another fuse to that addacircuit bit? I installed 2 gauges in my car and they work but my accessory/cigarette lighter socket no longer works. I never inserted another fuse only the existing one that was in the box.
The original fuse goes on the bottom..
Hey, if I'm using an open spot in the fuse box, would it matter what rating i put on the first spot? I know you said the 2nd spot has to be lower than the first in general, so I can put a 5amp on the 2nd spot regardless.. How do I know how higher I have to rate the 1st fuse? Thanks!
Hi,if it's a blank spot see if you can find a diagram of the fuse box and see what that would normally be.
You don't need a fuse in the first spot if it's a blank space and I would recommend keeping below a 20amp fuse in the fuse tap. What are you using it to power? See if you can find the rating on the device you have and stick with that fuse rating in the fuse tap. Hope that makes sense any other questions just ask👍
Hi quick question, does the battery need to be disconnected at this point ?
no not at all for this.
Can you add 2 wires to 1 add a circuit? Like if I wanted to hook up a dashcam and radar detector. Could I use 1 add a circuit or should I use 2 add aad a circuits?
You can use 1 but will have to be big enough for the load. You are more likely to blow the fuse this way also
What is the wire called on ebay, the one that runs from the small biggy back unit wire all the way round to your sterio. Im having issues finding that wire that i will connect to the split power cable off the mains
it's just a length of wire
How do I️ know what fuse is required for the item?
Check cheap CHINA fuses as some don’t blow and damage circuit.
Quick question I have those car cam hardwire kit and it has a little black box to prevent the camera from draining battery, it has a label on the box
"FREE VOLT INPUT:12V - 24V
VOLT/CURRENTOUTPUT: DC5V/2A"
I currently have a 20AMP in the piggy back will that damage my dashcam? If so what should I replace it with?
Cheers
if the max draw current is 2 amps a 2,3 or 5 amp fuse would be ideal.
you won't damage the the dash cam with a fuse larger fuse.
@@FINDITFIXITRESTOREITBUILDIT
So "VOLT/CURRENTOUTPUT: DC5V/2A" is called a max draw? I'll stick a 5amp in that case, cheers!
@@elit3physique yes it draws 2amp so a 5 amp fuse will be perfect for it.
could i add a tap to my traction control fuze and just turn it on and off with a button?
in theory yes I would start by removing the fuse and see how the car reacts. make sure no warning lights come up on the dash and it actually turns it off.
if all is well you could add a fuse in line and a switch and it should work.
Hello, As someone who has no idea about fuses etc I am still unclear on a few points. I have a new Dash cam and hardwire kit for my Skoda, and have been told the blue 15a rear wiper fuse is the one to use for a piggyback/Fuse Tap. So I have located this fuse ok and have got 2 ATO size Fuse Taps but neither has a fuse on. I understand the Blue 15a goes on the fuse tap nearest the prongs, but I have no idea what amperage fuse I need to get for the top slot? and secondly I don't know which way up to install the fuse tap - and if I get it wrong will it do any damage? My hardwire kit has yellow and red wires and a black for ground. So I'm not even sure if I need to use both the yellow and red with separate fuse taps? but if both where does the the 2nd one go? as the Wiper fuse has only one slot... I'm confused!
OK so a 3amp fuse will go in the other slot you need a permanent powered fuse for the red wire and something like the wiper fuse for the yellow wire a ignition switching fuse to turn the camera on and black goes to a bolt behind the dash for a ground connection. it will make no difference whatsoever with way round you fit them in as you have 2 fuses in the piggyback.
hope this helps you a bit
Thanks! for help. This is certainly proving to be a much more complicated job than I imagined.. So I've ordered some 3amp fuses now and 5amp as well just in case, as presumably the Red wire will also need another fuse above it. I've gone back on the Skoda forums now to ask about finding a suitable fuse for the Red wire connection. What's really confusing is no one on any Dash Cam posts that I have seen - and I've read dozens of them, mentions the need to find 2 fuses to connect to? So maybe my new Viofo dash cam is different technology? @@MADMODS
no a lot of cameras now come with both feeds needed for parking mode and other functions. just use the manual for the fuse board and look at the items the fuses supply so a wash wiper or heated seat is ideal for the ignition fuse say it ever fell out while driving its not going to impact the car. and sometimes like the radio fuse or 12v cigarette scocket for the permanent feed just pick something that's powered but not essential to the cars running. hope this is more helpful. I'll film a video on this to help others out.
What if you’re putting the tap into a spare slot in the fuse box that has no fuse in it? Do you still need 2 fuses in the tap?
No just the one.
MAD MODS Into the side closest to the tap pins, I’m guessing? (Bottom)
@@jamietee89 yes it should be and you might find you have to try the fuse tap in both ways round as without the other fuse it will only work one way round.
I'm looking to order some piggy back fuses, which size are the fuses in the glove box fusebox standard, mini, micro?
I've seen the atm, ato sizes on ebay not sure which to get tho
cheers mate
you will need to find a ignition fuse in your fuse box and then order the same fuse type. I Don't know what your fuse box looks like and what fuse is ignition feed.
@@MADMODS Wow was expecting a viewer to hopefully answer me didn't expect from you, thank you
but yeah i have the same Corsa as you with same fuse box/layout
a user from a corsa forum suggested i use the fuse 14 to hook up my stereo
but i need one of those piggyback circuits you're using, appreciate if you can let me know, thanks
@@RealNormHall it should be a mini fuse as most of the fuses in a corsa are. I try to help everyone out that comments on a video of mine.👍
Can I use two 15amp fuses on the same add a circuit?
if the fuse in the fuse box is 15amp then yes.
Bruh, so I used a add a fuse for my constant power to my amp, and I used 2 different amps and neither turned on. I checked all my other speaker wiring, rca, power, and ground. Would a wrong size fuse have some effect on it??
You have to wire the amps directly to your battery with a fused power cable
A fuse tap wont be able to handle the power required by the amp and will melt wiring.
No like the remote turn on, I used 4 gauge that runs from my battery to my amp
@@benleon8219 cool could see you burning out your wiring loom. Bridge the power over to the remote and see if the amp powers on that will show you the earth is ground and it's the remote feed that is the problem. Put the remote to a known 12v and see if it powers on the amp then you know the wires not broken then you will have to find a switched fuse in the fuse box and use it to turn the remote on. Make sure your earth cable is bolted to bear metal for a good connection if needed scrape paint off around the bold.
I can’t find a micro adapter anywhere...
Can I have both of them having the same rating amp?
Yes you could.
How do you know its not in backwards
Brother, is it possible to connect fog lights with these fuse.
No you will need a relay and harness for them on there own. As they pull way to much currant to use one of these. Led fog lights as long as there low wattage. Check out this video how to fit fogs with a relay ua-cam.com/video/Vts1I4Jj5jI/v-deo.html
Hope this helped any other questions just ask 👍
@@MADMODS thanks for sharing that link brother. But in that video, they are showing connection to to the switch. The same switch positive connection can I connect from the fuse tap.
The switch feed yes along as the kit has a relay to feed power to the fog lights and that's connected to the battery. So yes for the switch it will be fine
@@MADMODS thanks brother
When I put the fuse in the centre console of my car started making a buzzing noise. Is that normal?
No sounds like its powering something up possibly a fuse is missing and using the fuse tap has re powered it. Find out what the fuse is for and go from there.
MAD MODS the fuse I was tapping off was for the electric windows
MAD MODS I did put the fuse back in on it’s own to and the buzzing still happens
5:52 Everyone better SubCribe
What about j case fuses
What fuse box are you tapping into? I haven't seen a j case fuse tap. It would have to be massive and I doubt it would fit in the fuse box.
ua-cam.com/video/oNOkp5dNG-k/v-deo.html
You could do this and just run a wire off for the fuse tap.
MAD MODS it’s a 40 amp that has a secondary air pump (smog) and the seat functions on the same circuit. I’m trying to bypass that circuit because the pump runs even when the vehicle is off. It runs until the battery dies.
MAD MODS thanks for that idea
What about the the ground wire you never explained that
anything in the car that is metal or attached to the chassis is ground. just use a nut bolt or screw for the ground.
how many amps would TWO!! 12 v LED lights pull?
depends on the power of the lamps.
How about the orientation?
it says at the end of the video.
I never knew there was a specific way to orientate this add a fuse! I always put it in any old way or which ever way I had room. Learned something new today from you! Cheers!
Your explanation last in the video is quite wrong. If you install It the wrong way around you wont be unfused. The load from the tap will instead run through both fuses.
Still a mess though.. 🙂
I'm a auto spark and never thought about it but your very rite.
OMFG... What the hell is that big wire wiring job? That is a **** show improper. It's one thing to do that but WHY is it not TAPED with electrical tape?
BTW, you shouldn't have been telling people to just "test" the circut by plugging it in and powering on your device. They should be using a "light" tester at least and they just poke the fuses to see what ones are constantly live and live only when the car Key is ON or in Accessory mode etc. Also, they shouldn't be plugging into certain fuse locations depending on what's powered there already and what you're powering, because those fuses/locations are rated to power ONLY what's there already, so you might need to power in a different way rather than tapping into the fuse box.
