After the first few albums, he dedicated more and more of his time spent in production, leaving the drumming duties for Marky who is still alive.

Pretty sure they’re following Dee Dee’s count off (always the same “tempo”) up to the first note but *they all know the tempo of the song* from endless practice/gigs without much tempo variation. Johnny could have pulled that off. Was famously militaristic, and he, Dee Dee and Tommy were gifted (whether people who don’t play understand that or not). That’s my theory and I’m stickin’ to it.

The list of UK bands is long. The list of American bands is, Blondie, Ramones, Guns and Roses, Nirvana, Red Hot Chillipeppers. They create good solo artists but not bands for some reason.
I think everyone who was at that gig, including me, were privileged to see that band. They were on fire, and never let up for a second. For us young punks it was such a joy to be amongst so many like minded people. Great memories, and they are just actual memories, no iPhones in those days! Long live the Ramones!

Legendary Ramones concert. They were a music machine gun barely pausing between songs they hit you with round after round in rapid succession. The speed of their set list was only possible through sheer will power. Joey’s ripping vocals, Johnny’s warp speed down stroke on lead guitar, Dee Dee’s blistering bass playing along with Tommy rhythmically beating the drum kit like it owed him money. We will never see anything like the Ramones again. I’m glad videos of them exist so the world will remember what real rock looked like.
My friend Jack saw them do this show in Boston he said your hair was blowing back no one had seen anything like the Ramones….This performance rages it makes my day always and every time I hear it.
@@macematthewcolodny8452 wow new York really seemed to influence Boston music I heard a lot of Boston area musicians got into bands after seeing velvet underground and then Boston had a punk scene maybe after Ramones came to town
The things I like about the Ramones are the great melodies, short fun songs with the distorted guitars and the cool image with the hair and leather jackets. They literally redefined rock music which up until then was usually blues-based. The Ramones did not follow conventions. There is something infectious about them. I can't stop watching their videos. Rest in peace guys. You are forever missed!
Some of it may be blues based but most of it sounds like bubble-gum pop to me with distortion. Whatever it is, it sounds great and makes you want to jump up and down and have fun!
Now you're ready to hear the Ramones anti-thesis...Type O Negative. Start with their cover of Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid'. Then, search 'Christian Woman' and 'Black No.1'. ... and if you're REALLY feeling adventurous and un-PC, listen to 'Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity'. No better band (apologies to the Ramones) ever existed than TON!!!!
@@arthurbishop3173 Yes I just heard all those songs you mentioned. Type O Negative definitely have their own sound. It is dark and menacing and far removed from the Ramones. I like them too but for different reasons. Thanks for the suggestion!
I met the Ramones backstage at Antonino’s Pizzaria in November 1977. I remember them saying they were going to be the next Beatles, chatted with Dee Dee about his love for comic books, shared something they called “ Hemotonic “ in a squeeze bottle, and had all of their autographs on a bar napkin which I subsequently lost.
If not, for the existence of Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment, I would be prepared to agree with you, but that might be the most incredible musical artifact in the history of mankind.
+soulCracka1 Saw them here in Scotland, Edinburgh and Glasgow, early to mid 80s, 4 or five times, still have the ticket stubs, one is signed by Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee from the first time I met them. I was so star struck that I did not know what to say, other than "can you sign this" which they did as I took a few photos. Im sorry that you never got to see them, I have seen many bands over the years, Damned, Pistols, Bowie, REM, SLF, KISS, PIL, none left me as stunned as The Ramones.
The transition between “now I wanna sniff some glue” straight into “we’re a happy family” is so flawless and tight. They were so god dam professional. Simple song writing meets militant precision in live playing. Really fantastic stuff
In 1977 they were probably the best live band on the planet. They played fast here but as time went on they tried to play faster and faster which I think may have been to their detriment. This concert was perfection.
Exactly right. In 1977 they couldn’t be touched. I saw them 4 weeks after this gig and it was incredible. A false floor was installed at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and because people were still doing the Pogo the false floor went up and down. You could stand still and still be Pogoing. Damndest thing I ever did see. I saw them again in 1979 with Marky and it wasn’t the same. Tommy was better (for the Ramones) and they were playing faster which did not suit the material. Also, Joey had started to do the leave-out-some-syllables style that dominated his later years. It was lazy and I never saw them again after that year.
There is so much impossible stuff going on here - The speed at which Dee Dee’s and Johnny’s hands move, Tommy’s eighths on the hat, Joey’s rock-like stability at the center of the storm, the nearly identical tempos, the craziness and naked sincerity of the lyrics, Dee Dee’s insane jumps, the tiny dismissive gaps between songs, the “banter” (“After eating chicken vindaloo, I wanna be well.”), Dee Dee’s count offs . . . And remember how insanely LOUD this all was. Devastated everything in their path.

The band I truly miss and have seen live the most. I won 4 tickets on the radio one night working a grave shift. The DJ wanted the 10th caller. It was 3:00 a.m. and no one ever called in that late. I used to talk to this DJ frequently about music when we were slow at work. He turned me on to some genres I was unaware of and would play tracks so I didn’t have to buy if I didn’t like it. Back then 12’’ records were $5, doubles were $10 and sometimes you got a poster. He did his job requirement and made me call back until I was 10th and then, in a monotone voice, he said “yaaay, you just won 2 tickets to see the Ramones”. We laughed, I said thanks and I picked the tickets up at Tower Records down the street the next day. This was also before everyone had cell phones and gps. I looked up the venue in the yellow pages and got verbal directions from the bartender. It was a small blue collar joint out of the city about 45 minutes away in the middle of bumfu. . uh, nowhere. Maximum occupancy 50. I remember seeing that sign because I thought to myself, “Damn, we’re gonna be packed like sardines in a can”! By the looks of it though, they probably never had 50 people in there on a good night. I took my older roommate and his girlfriend. He said “Who? Oh the ramones, I remember them, they suck”. But he had a car. I convinced him to drive by giving them tickets and said I’d buy their drinks for the night. He was at least open minded hah. Rolling his eyes, he begrudgingly said “yea, but you’re paying for gas and if they suck we’re leaving”. I agreed and resigned myself to hitchhiking back if they left. Unbelievably, nobody else would take the 4th ticket because it was on a Wednesday or Thursday. There couldn’t have been more than 10-15 people in there at a time. Zippy was running around the bar in full dress with a Gabba Gabba Hey sign. The stage barely fit their gear but they played Exactly like this to an almost empty room. Full Bore giving it all they had. It was like we watched some Twilight Zone practice session. The bar had a free steak and potato’s buffet and we had a table about 3’ away from center stage. My roommates brain must have exploded at some point that night. By the time we left he was hoarse from screaming ‘’Hey Ho Let’s Go!!’’ He wouldn’t give my leather jacket back until the next day and bought himself one a week or so later. I think he might have even slept in mine that night. She had to drive us home and was unimpressed I’m sure (Bon Jovi/Nordstrom chick). The next day he admitted he was wrong, took back all the trash talking and my records went on heavy rotation Hahaa!! I saw them again shortly after that show with Blondie at the Moore in Seattle and even though they kicked ass, nothing could compare to the night I sawed up a couple steaks, ate potato’s, had shots, beers and turned my die hard rhythm and blues roommate into a Ramones fan. R.I.P. to the Greatest 3 chord Rock and Roll band that ever existed. ✌️
@@klausrain111 The Ramones formed in 74. McLaren, inspired by the Ramones and some other early punk bands in the NY scene at CBGB's, returned to England and got the band The Strand to develop in a more Ramones-like style. The Strand added a new singer, John Lydon, and changed their name to the Sex Pistols.
I saw them in a club a couple years after that and the loudness stands out as much as anything else in my memory haha. I was right in front of Johnny's Marshalls and next to a wall of PA speakers.
Saw them at an old bowling alley in Toronto''s west end 1980. About 100 of us spent the last 10 songs of their performance in a tight circle around the band singing their songs in unison and they played full-on. I was maybe 8 ft from them and I took a mental photograph of those moments. That is a cherished rock n' roll memory. After they were done, it was autograph time. The Ramones admitted in an interview that NYC, Boston & T.O. were their favorite concert stops due to the love shown them.
Wow! Outside of my music friends, I've never talked to anyone about that show. But it comes up in conversation every now and then. Club Kingsway was the venue and it was an all-ages event. What are your memories of that day? Does 1967 signify your birth year?
So, anyway, outside lining up there was this kid behind me.....maybe 12-13 and my friends and I were goofing around with him, asking him "How do you know about the Ramones? (his brother), stuff like that....and he starts making jokes about my height (he was funny) and I said to him, "Maybe you want to be taller?" Well, sure, I would," he said. "Ok, let's see..." and I get a hold of him by the top of shoulders of his jean jacket and lift him up slow about a foot off the ground. What d'ya think? You like like it up here? Get a good look" We were all laughing about that. "Ok, I've seen enough." It was a good time all around.
I was born in 1954...but in 1978 I bought a 1967 Pontiac, GTO convertible....my memories of that day are that I thought it was a very strange venue....I first saw the Ramones at the New Yorker theatre in Sep 76, and every show after that...the El Mocambo and again at the New Yorker theatre mainly up to that ...I think the Masonic Temple and Danforth Music Hall shows were later, and RPM was much later...I'd been going to concerts in Toronto since 1969, and had never seen a show at Club Kingsway before, and I've never heard of a show there since then....I have a vague memory that the show wasn't at night....is that right?
Your memory is correct. It was in the late afternoon on a summer's day. I'd never before heard of that club - or since. It was a shard of time. The Ramones shows before that you saw must have been really intense.
John H that’s a quote from an audience member at a show they did in London. Most people present at the show went on to be in some of the most influential punk bands of the time.
Simply the best ever live concert ever filmed. Filmed over 2 nights . Obviously edited brilliantly. The full concert is the album It’s Alive . Greatest live album of all time. When people ask about punk. This is it. 30 songs, 45 minutes, no time for solos, no playing whilst standing still, no playing facing the drummer or with back to the audience. Just 100% stripped down , played tight as ..Most importantly so many great songs. Awesome songs. And style ..

Still fucking awesome tho, a Ramones gig was like getting pummelled in the chest with a jackhammer, I'm glad I was old enough to see them
Boy. I think everyone here means well, but unfortunately there is a ton of incorrect info in this comment thread. I'm just going to set the record straight. 1. This video is from a single show (not multiple shows compiled), December 31st 1977 going into New Years 1978. Several Ramones shows were recorded around this time, with the intent to pick the best one for the live album, and film the entire show. This New Years Eve show was picked. 2. The live album/CD/vinyl version of this show "It's Alive" had the guitar, bass and vocals replaced in the studio. This video version however, features the real, original audio from the concert. Moments like Dee Dee briefly not playing his bass were fixed here by splicing in other sections of the live audio, not with overdubs. 3. Despite the full performance featuring 28 songs (as heard on the album version), this edited down video version only showcases 14 songs. This is mostly due to issues with the footage from this concert. A lot of it was unusable (damaged/out of focus/not a good shot), and some songs simply weren't filmed well enough from enough angles to make the cut. Even the songs shown here sometimes have brief clips spliced in from other parts of the concert, to fill in moments that didn't have a usable shot. These issues arose from the fact that this concert was NOT filmed professionally (there was no video control booth with a director coordinating things), but was captured instead by just having some dudes around the stage with film cameras. The footage is a messy jumble of efforts, and was apparently quite difficult to later sort through and sync to the audio. Due to this filming style though, there are a lot of cool and varied shots throughout. 4. The rest of the footage still exists, but largely hasn't been released. Edited down clips of "Rockaway Beach" and "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" have been shown separately from this video in documentaries. The footage of "Rockaway Beach" is on my channel with repairs to its damaged audio. 5. Despite all these issues, thank god this concert was filmed and edited together on any level. It may be incomplete and a bit messily edited, but it's an incredible piece of music history with some of the most amazing shots/moments of the original Ramones lineup in their prime.
@@HardlyRamone Sorry my friend, but it’s the other way around. . I bought the vinyl release when it was released, and the sound on that vinyl just can’t be compared with this video. If you work with music, or have a musical ear, you can clearly hear the overdubs in the video (I also have the dvd release) the difference is HUGE…
No set lists anywhere either. They had the whole damned thing memorized. I'm having to look at my setlist 3 times each song to not forget what song is coming next, lol.

The Ramones. SUCH a cool unique style/sound. They DID truly create their OWN universe. The look, the sound, everything all their own. The biggest thing I love about them is that while yes, theyre rockin,' they are POSITIVE and its uplifting music. Not evil or dark or demonic nonsense. Its about getting up and getting into action, like it should be. Love these people and their style. Inspired me hugely in my teens, and even to this day. Rare rock band, we need MORE!
I grew up listening to this band ever since I was 10. I am from Uruguay and even before I knew English I was just mumbling their words :) I was just blown away by their raw energy.
I’ve been listening to Ramones ever since I was about 7 or 8 when I watched the “School of Rock” movie, I heard Bonzo Goes to Bitburg. R.I.P. Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, and Tommy.
Anyone who thinks this is easy hasn't tried to make this kind of sound. Great musicians, every one. I will always love the Ramones and rebuke people who say they can't play! Dee Dee in particular is underrated, especially because of his Marilyn Monroe-esque dumb-blonde self negating defense mechanism. But man, his songs are great, and his bass playing is right on.
Patrick Weston they got this tight from constant playing and practicing. If you watch videos of the Ramones from '74 and '75, they were nowhere near this good. Just goes to show that the saying "practice makes perfect" is true
what johnny did was so much harder though, playing those full barre chords all the time with all downstrokes at the speed they usually played live is pretty insane. most punk rock guitar players just stick with the power chords but johnny played the full chords which gave the ramones that bigger wall of sound, but your right that dee dee is underrated. not to mention that dee dee ramone was by far the best songwriter in the band and an extremely tight bass player.....and his stage presence was so fucking cool as well! tommy ramone is probably the most underrated member, you dont hear much about tommy but the ramones were never the same after he left the band and he was a really solid drummer too, marky is probably a better drummer but he didnt have the whole package like tommy, tommy was kind of the leader of the band and the organizer of the band when he was there....
I agree. Without Tommy, there wouldn't have been the Ramones. I also agree that while Marky is a proficient drummer, the band was never the same when Tommy left the band for the producer's chair. The band just sounded right when Tommy was (begrudgingly) behind the drum kit. The first four Ramones albums are untouchable as far as seminal punk albums go.
Fortunate and privileged enough to have been at both gigs at the Rainbow mainly to support Generation X . Still have a backstage pass in my memorabilia... Iconic gigs with many punk faces present who were mingling in the crowd. Sid and Nancy, Joe Strummer, John lydon,Degenerate etc.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I saw them 9 times over the years and was even a crowd extra in the concert scene of their movie, "Rock and Roll High School", and I just absolutely Love this early era of the Ramones! They were truly and eccentrically great!!! What memories!!!
please tell me, did the Ramones understand in those years that they became a legend for all time? and this style with leather jackets and jeans, is it an accident or a tribute to the times?
@Biocombinat I can't believe for a moment that they would have any long-lasting legacy in music history. The T-shirt sales alone must still pay their heirs some healthy royalties! And how many baseball stadiums still play "Blitzkrieg Bop" to get the fans going? Certainly the Yankees, and I'm sure most others. They didn't sell many records, but their legacy is intact!
Saw them back in 1996, I was only 16 years old. Their last tour in South America. I will never forget when I saw Joey in front of me, I was very close to the stage. Adios Amigos tour 1996 @ Olympia, São Paulo.
Missed their first show in 76 at the roundhouse, so was desperate to see this one. About 20 of us walked back south of the river buzzing til the middle of March. What a fucking sweaty fantastic night it was.
I have listened the Ramones for the first time in 1977. I buyed the 45 rpm "Glad to see you go" in the far Catania (Sicily)...They changed, forever, my life....Today? I'm a quiet man but, under my skin, my heart beat at 300mph....thank you my Brothers...forever!

As a guitarist I've always marveled at Johnny and Deedee's right hand technique. It's human nature when the bpms get that fast to start alternate picking. They'd have none of that, too jangly and wimpy. Everything is on the downstroke. Their hands become blurred and if you watch the wide shots with both of them, they synchronized their picking patterns perfectly. Even just from the perspective of a physical workout it's remarkable and they often did it for 2 hours and then did it again the next night. I can't imagine how their elbows and wrists survived the abuse. This was one of my most played albums as a kid, and I learned every song in order. I could play every note, but I could never play it like johnny did.
I've heard that playing with the instrument slung super low, to have the arm stretched out, helps a lot with the fast downpicking. To be honest, just stretching my arm and doing the downpick motion, it seems way easier than if I bend my arm
it does help with the fast downpicking, but there becomes a point where it's so low it's pretty much just showmanship and style. it makes it a lot harder to play anything technical. with that being said most punk-type music is just spamming a bunch of power chords anyway @@HipsterNgariman
@@MrJohnnyDistortion technical guitarists definitely do wear their guitars at a more regular position typically. it's more of a stylistic choice/showmanship choice and has kind of become a staple around rock music. look at jimmy page and slash for example, they wear their guitars super low
Ake Hilding at this point in their time true. but in the 80's they tried to get a mainstream hit and made changes to attempt to get favor with radio people. Epic fail never fully got back to early way that they came to be known for
Didn't change songs. They made changes in song styles. Just listen to songs from early albums then songs from albums of the 80's. Varied from mainstream style to soft rock, and heavy metal/hard rock. I think som of their 80's heavy metal attempts did influence some other bands.
@heyhey heyhey These guys rock, but,FYI, did not know how to play ANY of their instruments when they started (Look it up). I have their greatest hits album-John in Texas
I miss them. I first saw the Ramones play when I was only 8 years old (1980) at the Agora Ballroom in New Haven, CT. My mom had to ring ahead and get permission from the club manager to allow me and my little brother (who was 5) into the show. We stood in line outside in the freezing cold with all the punks for almost 2 hours waiting to get in. When they finally opened the doors, we were carried inside on the shoulders of scary-looking (but very friendly) guys in spiked leather jackets with mohawks and chain wallets. They were just so thrilled to see two little kids who loved the Ramones as much as they did. That night changed our lives forever. I know that sounds like an exaggeration, but it really isn't. I'll never forget what I experienced that night. They showed me the TRUE power of music, in its most raw glory...and my ears are still ringing, over 40 years later... ;-) May they all rest in peace. The world is truly a lesser place without them.

It is not the whole gig, it wasn´t all released on film for some reason (they must have it somewhere). The whole gig is recorded on the album/cd ´´It´s Alive´´ at about 55 mins.
i think our peak as a band was that show in england in 1977 to 1978 new year we did, i think. said johnny ramone himself about it even in his book Commando
What's lkr? If your starting a fight with someone who replied Passionately to your post I think you need to rethink your social concepts turning a good post into a joke if I called Adolf Hitler a c++t do you think anyone would give a damn grow up your degrading the promotion of our shared love of the Ramones
his enthusiasm is not matched by the band's desire to play in a fast but sensible tempo his intros are the best though. one of the most thrilling things in music is: Joey starts mumbling an intro, DeeDee yells over him one two three, and four is drowned out by the crushing freight train of sound
Whenever I've checked my iPod over the past 8/9 years, Ramones Alive has consistently remained the most played album on my iPod. Nothing has ever surpassed it.
Saw these guys in Leeds UK, almost 45 years on still the best live band I have ever seen, had to buy a T shirt to go home in, mine was totally soaked through from pogo dancing, was utterly blown away by the energy.
i would dare to say this is one of the best live concerts ever recorded. to me at least. there is many good ones, but this is very magical. i have been listening to this record all my life and i still love it.
You are right, I only discovered it many years later. I know the Ramones since 1979 or so, later I found out they made this fantastic concert. It changed a lot in music.

This is not blues-based??? It's classic RnB, played at x3 and distorted - and great!
Some of it may be blues based but most of it sounds like bubble-gum pop to me with distortion. Whatever it is, it sounds great and makes you want to jump up and down and have fun!
Thats the key. Melodic and catchy. No soloing. Cut to the chase music. One singer, one guitar, bass,. drums. The mighty møtörhead shared the same dna.

They were never better than this. Just like some of the hard rock classic live albums that came out in the same period!
You make a very good point. I have been enjoying it for about 45 years!
This concert is something I would give my life for.
It's just SO good. Johnny is all down strokes as well!

I get goosebumps watching and listening to The Ramones LIVE. What energy.
Holy shit what a ripper! the energy off these guys is incredible .

Amen, bro...
This is a treasure. So glad this exists.
Put into context, there simply was no one like Ramones in '77. Completely authentic rockers. Seeing them was like a shared historical moment.
But isnt this after the Sex Pistols came out? Please dont ridicule. I was around back then but I cannot remember the events sequence.
@@klausrain111 The pistols have nothing on the Ramones. Not even close.
Ramones are the reason American hardcore exists, them and Iggy & The Stooges. Both bands impacts cannot be overstated

I saw them in a small venue in 1980.
My ears were ringing for 2 weeks! One of the best shows I ever saw. SLAM!
I saw them in a club a couple years after that and the loudness stands out as much as anything else in my memory haha. I was right in front of Johnny's Marshalls and next to a wall of PA speakers.
I feel fortunate to have seen these guys perform while they were still on this earth.
Wow I wish I could have seen them!!!
I love live Joey and his snarled twisted singing style. A true arteeest
I’d love to meet someone who was at this gig ,, absolutely fkn mind blowing ,, what a New Year’s Eve ,,
Saw them at an old bowling alley in Toronto''s west end 1980.
I was there too!
R.I.P. ......All four of these dudes. :(

Pretty much. Including me, we never got beyond the garage though.

Greatest Nearly Live Album ever - guitar and bass overdubbed in the studio - check Dee Dee's magic bass @7:04, he's not playing it as he dropped his pick yet the notes continue. Still fucking awesome tho, a Ramones gig was like getting pummelled in the chest with a jackhammer, I'm glad I was old enough to see them
Many overdubs though… I have the original vinyl. BIG difference
Every song is a classic! With no space in between. They just blast off the whole time. It’s incredible.

Rare rock band, we need MORE!
this is a fucking great comment...
The dark part is not true. Plenty of their songs are Dark AF. They are a punk band after all
At 57 years old I still feel a great emotion .. thanks brothers wherever you are.

I’ve been listening to Ramones ever since I was about 7 or 8 when I watched the “School of Rock” movie, I heard Bonzo Goes to Bitburg. R.I.P. Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, and Tommy.
Fuckin' ay..
8/26/20 ¡Guepa! mi compay. (Boricua-Cubana aquí - nací en Los Ángeles, CA.) No hay mejor que Los Ramones. 🤘💯
He was a great song writer. He just was too much of an addict.
You're right about Johnny R., tendonitis blues!
Fortunate and privileged enough to have been at both gigs at the Rainbow mainly to support Generation X .

They probably took vitamins.
I've heard that playing with the instrument slung super low, to have the arm stretched out, helps a lot with the fast downpicking.
To be honest, just stretching my arm and doing the downpick motion, it seems way easier than if I bend my arm
@HipsterNgariman
Almost all highly skilled guitarist wear their guitar at waist level or above I have noticed.
it does help with the fast downpicking, but there becomes a point where it's so low it's pretty much just showmanship and style. it makes it a lot harder to play anything technical. with that being said most punk-type music is just spamming a bunch of power chords anyway @@HipsterNgariman
@@MrJohnnyDistortion technical guitarists definitely do wear their guitars at a more regular position typically. it's more of a stylistic choice/showmanship choice and has kind of become a staple around rock music. look at jimmy page and slash for example, they wear their guitars super low
Mind blowing, these guys didn't give a shit and built their own universe, epic.
Ake Hilding at this point in their time true. but in the 80's they tried to get a mainstream hit and made changes to attempt to get favor with radio people. Epic fail never fully got back to early way that they came to be known for
+Michael Frierson what songs they change
Didn't change songs. They made changes in song styles. Just listen to songs from early albums then songs from albums of the 80's. Varied from mainstream style to soft rock, and heavy metal/hard rock. I think som of their 80's heavy metal attempts did influence some other bands.
Fuck Yeah !!
