    Beautiful trees.
    Neighborly gatherings.
    Quaint old houses...
Lots of potential, that's for sure.
Good to see kids at that community center with the volleyball courts.
I've always wanted to move back home to Jax.... its just not safe anymore though. Too many random shootings. Right before I moved away in 2014, I was in Regency mall & caught in the crossfire of a shootout between some very young kids... luckily, I didn't get hit, but a lady behind me did, and there was blood all over.
14 yr Olds arguing over something stupid.
But, back in the 80's, Jacksonville was epic... amazing place to grow up

I lived in Jacksonville when I first moved to Florida for a year. I rented an entire home for $650 a month. It's a rough neighborhood, but unless you're looking for trouble most people just mind their business. I used to walk to the gym and work, morning and night never had any trouble. My neighbors got used to me and it was somewhat homelike after awhile.

Looks green and full of life. I read some of the comments and people are saying that it's not safe so I'm not romanticising it but if you look at some of the streets in rich neighbourhoods - empty, high fences, neighbours don't know each other and don't care who lives in the castle next door (Bishop's Avenue here in London for example)... Compared to that these streets are full of life like 1:43 whilst those sparkling ones are lifeless and disconnected. Tnx Charlie.

This area is Called Durkeeville off Myrtle Ave. if you would have continued down 6th street towards the highway and the Reed Center you would see the old Sandstill creek where they still have African American Headstones Dated back to the late 1800’s /Early 1900’s back in the wooded area of the park. This area is historic to the HOOD and the Rec center was built on top of many old graves. Also there is a man buried on the sidewalk named Thomson and he was killed protecting a white woman in the early 1900’s. The city protects the gravesite like a landmark.

@Born-to-Run it’s located on the the grounds next to a sidewalk built around it. It’s about 7 feet long and sits about 8 inches higher than the actual sidewalk. It has a large headstone On its stone marker, an inscription tells, in 31 words, the bare outlines of the hero’s tale: This tablet marks the grave of Thompson Williams, a Negro who died on October 28, 1908 from wounds received while endeavoring to protect the honor and life of a white woman.
There’s much more to this story, of course.
For a few weeks, 107 years ago, it was big news: A woman’s cry for help. Two shots. One man fleeing, another gasping for life, a bullet in his stomach. Ten children and a wife left behind. A footprint in the sand. A sheriff vowing justice. And a terrified man - labeled by the press a “brute” and a “fiend” - pleading his innocence.

@@BORN-to-Run this was 1908… a black man was killed. There was no justice to be served during these times for people of color. The woman lived to tell her side so there was local recognition for Thompson by the Times News. Look I’m just a Jacksonville resident who knows about the history of Duval county and especially the Durkeeville Area. Streetlights didn't work. Fire hydrants didn't work. Burned out cars on the side of the road.

Not as bad as some in Detroit, Chicago, Philly and some of the other hoods in the bigger cities with half crumbling, burnt down houses with garbage all over. Proverbs 28:27 27 Whoever gives to the poor will not want,
but he who hides his eyes will get many a curse.
