I really irritates me, that you get told, when you first start, that you need cover every surface on the model, when your sitting here an basically ruins every method I've been told to do, when your painting. Nothing is smooth, its all a mix of colors, and i can basically just slap some paint on the model with a sponge, if i have a little understanding of where projectiles or dust often hit the armor. And yet i know its because of years of experience that your able to do it so well and so fast. I could have done so much with a lot less training, if i was a model could/should look like this. I might be due to popularyty over time... but alas... very nice vid... can´t wait to do this on my marines too.. what's a good base color for chips/scratches, to icy blue marines?.. my guess is silver or white, with a darker tone upper corner.
I would be interested in seeing what you could do with Alpha Legion. People like to add effects of them dropping out of a camouflage or adding a color shift effect.
it would look more realistic when the area of the purple and red on the heat dispenser is smaller, the temperature range to make metal purple is so little that it turns realy fast from yellow to blue. and red is almost imposible. as a watchmaker iam talking from experiance :D
If you love this grim dark style, Richard Gray has some great 'simple' stippled schemes for a whole load of chapters that really gel with this aesthetic.
It seems that the sponsor also unlocked the music in this video! The flamer looks amazing, but I think that the taint in the eagle was a little bit too much. Great vid, as always
I'm so happy to see the Salamanders getting some Grimdark love. This is an incredible paint job and I definitely learned a few things from watching this video. Well done Trovarion!
And he should do Logan Grimnar on his sled. As it would combine everything the Wolves are known for. Tons of details, ornaments, trinkets, totems, etc. 😄
This method is awesome! Used it on my own marines, and the results are so good (and I'm by no means a great painter). It's really easy to replicate, and nails the grimdark look without leaning on a thousand technical paints. 10/10 would recommend if you're a bit sick of the same old 'paint-by-numbers' method of painting your minis.
Nice job on the heat treatment. Most people get it backwayrds. With flamers it's a bit simpler since the hottest part is at the muzzle, but things like melta guns will be hotter on the inside where the beam is emitted inside the barrel, not the exit point (where the beam would be coolest, relatively speaking). Like in the image references you showed, it's more blue and violet on the engine side of the exhaust, not the exit side. Awesome cool green tone and freehand, too. Love the look. I've always liked the Salamanders, but so many go for a yellowish green, a color I'm really not fond of on a vehicle. Looks amazing.
These videos are FANTASTIC! I really enjoy your grimdark style. I especially enjoyed the heat staining on the flamer weapon. I've been looking forward to doing this on my own models. As for next chapter my vote goes to a metallic chapter to see how those behave in this style. - Grey Knights - Celestial Lions (the chapter I've settled on)
Loved the breakdown of the steps and why. Truly nice for me as a Salamander to see it done. Usually go with Caliban Green for the 'under' armour and Warpstone Glow for the 'plates' with highlights done with Moot Green or Tesseract Glow as it matches almost to the Moot. Also gives the benefit to make it a nice use when I want to use the zenithal I put on to guide me for lighting. I will use your method for the flamers though, I use a bronze metallic, Magos Purple and Grey Knights Steel to get the effect but it's a pain to do most of the time. Thank you for the showing of it :D
Any Tips on how i can remove my old Space Marine shoulder Plates without damaging them. (i want to use the Upgrade kit for Salamander for shoulders and head)
A pleasure, as always. I only use this style when painting Space Marines, it looks great, and is a fun and satisfying way of painting as well. I really like how the flame thrower turned out, I want to try that out my self, and you make it look easy - Im guessing I wont feel that way the first time. Thanks as always for keeping up the good work and making your corner of the internet such a pleasant one.
As a fan of you who asked for a dark angel tutorial, and a man who likes the brighter green much more than the original dark angel green, this is accepted with a like :D
Fantastic. The reason I like your grimdark videos so much is that not only does the end result look incredible- I feel like it's also achievable for someone of my skill level.
I'm curious how this grim dark style would apply to a Grey Knight. Trovarion, your paintings have continually inspired me through several armies and many display quality miniature gifts I have been able to make for my friends. Keep up the amazing work!
I would love to see you paint up something bigger one day and just go by your own preferences and create something you feel would be fun and exciting. Imagine like Bel'akor or something with your own colour scheme. Everything you have done up to this point has been truly amazing work. So let Trovarion decide basicly! A model and paints of your choosing and go nuts! at least i think that would be exciting 😅
Outstanding as per usual!! Every time you paint this way it makes me want to copy it... I really love how the Sons of Horus turned out on the bolter body...
That painting style is sick! Unfortunately my blue boys keep their armor pristine in the lore, so this style doesn’t really apply to my ultrabros. But I may put a couple characters in with this style just to mix things up. Great vid!
That's true, but if they've been entrenched for months, it's not always possible. You can absolutely make your blue Bois and dirty as you like and it'd still be lore accurate and dope.
Iron warriors would be great to see or celestial lions. Silver or gold in your grim dark style would certainly add to the solid tutorials you already have. Love these man, keep em coming
That stippling technique really give miniatures an very distinctive and interesting look. Though I like much more the method you used with the Blade Guard Dark Angel. Furthermore I would love to see you painting a Space Wolf. For once I couldn't find any video of you ever painting one and secondly the fur, trinkets, totems, ornaments, tons of details, etc. might actually be a challenge, if taken time and care ofc. So give it a try and why not go for the big Great Wolf himself? He is one of THE heroes of the Imperium, the only Marine known of ever beating a Demon Primarch in close combat (Magnus), Logan Grimnar.
This serie is very inspiring. I might try this with the Space Marines I have, painting them as Crimson Fists, replacing the Ultramarine Blue from the ultramarine tutorial with Kantor Blue maybe?
I use a pretty similar palette for my salamanders, but instead of Caliban Green I use waaagh! Flesh and I edge highlight with Averland Sunset. Also for the blacks I use Abaddon Black, and then do my highlights with Mechanicus Standard Grey and Dawnstone. P.s. Thanks for giving Salamanders some love! They're the underdogs of the space marines in terms of fan attention hahah
Gives me a lot to work with for my salamanders kill team, love the end result though i will likely use scale 75 greens for.mine, still time to experiment on a test marine
Please do a bit on using pigment powders for the base. Everyone seems to have a different opinion on whether they need some sort of setting medium or not if they're going to be transported and used for actual games.
As for what chapter to paint next, since you're only missing a few of the first founding chapters/legions at this point, you could do Iron Hands, White Scars or Raven Guard next. I personally really like the Iron Hands but Grimdark white armor would also be cool.
Actually using metal for edge distressing makes sense even though "ceramite" isn't technically metal I doubt space marine armor would just be paint over ceramite. Real world vehicles and machinery have layers of primer, laquers and heat resistant materials, nickel plating, etc between the top layer of paint and the base material. I imagine space marine armor would be the same. Isn't asbestos dark and shiny?
I'm a newbie, yes, I studied art but heck the minies world is another thing, also super thanks bcs i always needed a good tutorial for salamanders like this
I would love to see you do a Legion of the Damned marine. It's been my dream to build an entire army of those since I first saw them way back in 2nd edition.
I'd love to see what you do with the Raptor Legion. Their colour scheme has changed over time and is currently a drab green, but I feel like there's an opportunity to bring a little more heraldry into it. I feel like the fundamentals suit your style, but you could really bring a fresh take that would make them more exciting.
You make it look so easy. I might just give this technique a try. My Salamander green is made up of a 50/50 mix of Vallejo goblin green and dark green over a black primer.
Grey knights or similar Grey themes would be amazing next. Your grimdark method has changed my painting forever. Started a new chapter of SM Green funnily enough, so i could do some coloured Grim Dark. Also maybe some grim dark thousand sons/alpha legion/2world eaters would be awesome.
Other UA-camr’s: you should only have paint halfway up the bristles of the brush in order to not clog the ferrule in order to prevent damage over time Trovarian: GREEN BRUSH
Hi this is such a cool technique - looking forward to doing my BA (will use your black templars recipe for my death company). Do you put any water in the paints for the sponge/brush stippling? Also any tips for metallic armour (thinking sanguinary guard) not sure if the metallic pigments will work like this?
I loved this! I had been thinking of using a similar technique on my new Deathwatch when I get around to painting them and then I stumbled onto this video! I'd love to see your take on deathwatch and how you highlight up from black, what colours you use etc
This has me even more hyped for my box, can't wait to paint my minis. I would love to see a complete lineup of your grim dark style of every chapter because each one so far has been amazing and I feel like I learn something new with each one
Once again a great tutorial! Hopefully we will see you doing White Scars one day, as their scheme is of course among the harder of all the scheme's of first founding chapters.
Thinking about this grimdark style, I wonder how this sort of technique would work with Grey Knights. Does anyone have any experience or have tried it?
I'd suggest to do Grimdark White Scars. They're not super common, and im interested to see your take on how to paint battle damaged white armor without doing the usual "make it rust and brown" approach.
This is great - and thanks for the hint of dark reds on blacks. I have a primed and pendind Death Company Dreadnought and still working on the colours for the off-black areas. Was thinking colder blues in the highlights and edges; the red would be interesting in the recesses. One question for the broad armour/battle damage/grimdark/primer. Would it make sense to paint the "non damaged" green areas in , and then use the sponge with browns for chipped areas? The difference in this order is that the recesses are still mostly green, but all the edge chipping would show the brown. Or maybe the shown order works best because the brown in the edges is from chipping, the brown in the recesses is just shading. Anyway, thanks for this!
I mean if you don't want or need the Terminators, I can come pick them up somewhere, being in Vienna and all XD Also I wish i would keep a painting journal, cause I painted Salamanders in the past, but only remember having moot green as a highlight and no clue what else I used.
Takes me back to the Grimdark Blood Angel Marine that you painted and that was kick-ass. Wasn’t too keen on the flames - I think Algerothen wins hand down on those 😅👍
Would love to see you adapt this technique for the Horus Heresy models. Specifically the MKVI “beakies.” The edges of the armor being different makes me wonder if I should still leave a dark area or how to translate this approach. I know you want (and we want you to do what YOU want to do) to do other things but maybe you could do a HH space marine with this approach in the future?
Excellent work, your Salamander marine looks good and gritty with a convincing heat stain to the heavy flamer, a much more realistic looking space marine then how GW presents them. What chapter to paint up next? How about the Imperial Castellans?!
your painting technique is so cool and i never see something like this before! Witch green would you pick instead of the warpstone glow for a dark angel? (Sorry for my english)
Love these vids so much, particularly the blood angels 😊. Thanks mate for another outstanding vid, the mini looks fantastic and the tutorial I really easy to follow
Great scheme, this style is really nice to build up a whole army. One small critique: the verdigris on the chest symbol has taken away some of the metallic shine. As the eye is naturally drawn to this area, a few highlights on that area would bring it back nicely.
Hey Trovarion. Couls you do some videos about color theory? All of this talk about primary colors, value, etc.. I would really like explanstions and what it means to us.
Howling Griffons might be interesting, balancing two different colours that are equally prominent. But considering how it may be too close to already tread ground (red and yellow), doing something like a cool white ala white scars or luna wolves might be cool. Heck maybe grim dark GSC?

Awesome tutorial!!
As a huge Salamanders fan this is everything I wanted. Your grimdark method just makes the minis look so real and worn down. I love it. Thank you!
Yeah, this is awesome!
It's official, I'm starting a Salamanders army using this guide as a basis for the overall look. Awesome paint job and techniques!
That pencil with some sponge was the real MVP 😂
It's one hell of a high tech tool!
btw, are using blue tack to fix that sponge? or just shove it in?
@@sloggiz superglue!

Dude that little flash of the finished salamander freehand inbetween the montage is amazing! great video as always 🔥
"now draw the rest of the owl" ;)
@@nvcn86 Haha I love that joke
The metal heat discolouration is such a fun effect to do - if you use an airbrush you can even use it in speed painting
This is pretty much the only channel you need to watch if you like to paint space marines
Dude did some amazing Nids as well.

This technique gives a real look of weight to the armour. Great to see new ways to paint. Awesome!

Awesome cool green tone and freehand, too. Love the look. I've always liked the Salamanders, but so many go for a yellowish green, a color I'm really not fond of on a vehicle. Looks amazing.
On the box of the primaris eradicator set, the ends of the meltas' muzzles are blue though
that cut in the montage to the finished symbol was very nicely done!
Darker Space Wolves would be great. Maybe a bit more in the grey blue direction instead of the bright ice blue.
the skill in this is absolutely fantastic. made me want to try a paint scheme like this
Yes! I have been struggling with a more worn look for my Salamanders and this is perfect!!!
These videos are FANTASTIC! I really enjoy your grimdark style. I especially enjoyed the heat staining on the flamer weapon. I've been looking forward to doing this on my own models.

Any Tips on how i can remove my old Space Marine shoulder Plates without damaging them. (i want to use the Upgrade kit for Salamander for shoulders and head)
I would love to see some Space Wolves, mainly to see how you would do the fur and preferably face and hair! Thanks for awesome videos!
Thank you for introducing this method here. The result speaks for itself. Such an awesome style!

Love the free hand stuff, thank you for showing us how to do the flamer heat shield metal blending that was pretty cool!!
Those eyes are perfect! Awesome tutorial, thanks.
I was looking for a good guide on grimdark Salamanders, and this was everything I wanted, thank you!!!!
Fantastic. The reason I like your grimdark videos so much is that not only does the end result look incredible- I feel like it's also achievable for someone of my skill level.
Surprisingly i'm already using some these techniques for my Marines Malevolent army. Love me some sponge painting
Heat warped flamer is 🔥As always your grimdark style is both easily achievable and looks fantastic.
Stunning. I’ve been waiting for this one since the Blood Angel video. I think what the world needs to see now is your take on Grimdark Ork skin.
I'm curious how this grim dark style would apply to a Grey Knight. Trovarion, your paintings have continually inspired me through several armies and many display quality miniature gifts I have been able to make for my friends. Keep up the amazing work!
That gun casing process is sick - def using that on mine.
Good for a grim dark look for sure. Brighter colors seem to work well for this method 👌

I really liked how you did the flames. I don’t know if I’ll ever have a reason to freehand flames but if I do this would be how I do it
Love these last three videos. I don't have the patience to do smooth transitions, this rougher style really clicks with me.
very impressed how fast and effective the commentary is in this video Trovarion, perfect and easy to follow!
That stippling technique really give miniatures an very distinctive and interesting look.

sure, why not!
I would kill to see a video on a proper dark angel scheme in this style with deep greens!!
I use a pretty similar palette for my salamanders, but instead of Caliban Green I use waaagh! Flesh and I edge highlight with Averland Sunset. Also for the blacks I use Abaddon Black, and then do my highlights with Mechanicus Standard Grey and Dawnstone.

I would love to see this technique on black armor. How would you build up highlights?
Trying to paint jade green salamanders. Thanks for working with green.
Astounding work! I'd love to see your take on a grimdark Grey Knight, this is something that no one seems to have done yet.
Would it be possible to use the same steps but with different shades of grey going up to white for apothecary’s or white scars?
Can't go wrong with salamanders awesome paint job keep up the great work!
I've been wanting to try the heat effect and I'd like to see your take at a darker Space Wolves scheme.
You make it look so easy. I might just give this technique a try.
My Salamander green is made up of a 50/50 mix of Vallejo goblin green and dark green over a black primer.
Love this style, would be curious to see if it can be applied to white armor!

Trovarian: GREEN BRUSH
YOU GOT TO SLAP THAT PAINT MY DUDE!
Hi this is such a cool technique - looking forward to doing my BA (will use your black templars recipe for my death company). Do you put any water in the paints for the sponge/brush stippling? Also any tips for metallic armour (thinking sanguinary guard) not sure if the metallic pigments will work like this?
This was exactly the style and colour scheme I was hoping for
Your videos have gotten so much better man ❤
Well edited awesome lighting and sound/music
Sweet model and tutorial!!
you could ofc do the same grim dark for Tau, Votann, Imp Guard etc to great effect
Yeah, i thought about doing something like that. Just need a good idea how to package it into a video 😅
Once again a great tutorial!
Hopefully we will see you doing White Scars one day, as their scheme is of course among the harder of all the scheme's of first founding chapters.
I love your tutorials. You should do a grim dark tau! (Farsight enclaves maybe)
These paint schemes are so good. Please do a space wolves one I’ve tried myself and can’t get the right paints
Thinking about this grimdark style, I wonder how this sort of technique would work with Grey Knights. Does anyone have any experience or have tried it?
what paint did you use for the brown initial paint layer?
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I’ve been trying to figure out how to up my game on painting my salamanders and this will help a lot. Thanks again.
Iam always amazed how much depth the stippling technique creates.
I'd suggest to do Grimdark White Scars. They're not super common, and im interested to see your take on how to paint battle damaged white armor without doing the usual "make it rust and brown" approach.
I'm hoping we get some new Grey Knights soon, I'd love to see ow you would approach them in this style with the very bright armour.

Or maybe the shown order works best because the brown in the edges is from chipping, the brown in the recesses is just shading.

T that is an absolute show stopper!!!
That heated metal effect was so well done
I mean if you don't want or need the Terminators, I can come pick them up somewhere, being in Vienna and all XD
Also I wish i would keep a painting journal, cause I painted Salamanders in the past, but only remember having moot green as a highlight and no clue what else I used.

your painting technique is so cool and i never see something like this before!
Witch green would you pick instead of the warpstone glow for a dark angel?
(Sorry for my english)
Love these vids so much, particularly the blood angels 😊. Thanks mate for another outstanding vid, the mini looks fantastic and the tutorial I really easy to follow
THANK YOU THANK YOU for showing us how a master painter handles a salamander!
Great scheme, this style is really nice to build up a whole army. One small critique: the verdigris on the chest symbol has taken away some of the metallic shine. As the eye is naturally drawn to this area, a few highlights on that area would bring it back nicely.
