  • What's up everyone? Zoltan, a true legend, sent me his late 2020 Celestion Vintage 30s with Y batch cones to test and find out of these already fall into the (possibly, sadly) short lived new smooth V30 era or not...
    So I popped them in my Grossman iso cab and gave them a spin

    I actually got a cab yesterday with a pair of 2021 V30ies with the Y cone. I shot them out against some 2003 v30ies and it wasnt even close. I basically saw identical results to what youve shown herem Thanks for all your hard work mate!

    the Vintage 30's here sound like they are actually different speaker models instead of different production runs of the same speaker. I think you should buy 100 vintage 30's fresh from celestions and run the same test to see if normal production variation is the cause ;) ... only 1/2 kidding.

    idk, by far I prefer the 2019 model - I'm not hearing the harsh "machine" sounds - I'm hearing more clarity and less clipping/scooping of the mids, but maybe those who like the early 2000's and 2022 model prefer more scooped mids for metal???
    personally I don't really use much other than my amp distortion and I'm typically looking for more mid range/high end boost for the crystal clear sparkly highs and smooth mids with less low end so hard to say, very subjective to anyones personaly opinion here.
    for reference I'm running a prs swamp ash special with mccarty pickups and blackstar club 50 - but it's slightly modified to get more high gain out of it.
    I typcailly play it mixed with a 2x12 celestion v30's and 4x12 with eminence legend v128s - the legends provide the sparkly highs and the v30's provide the thump - granted I'm probably going to eventually get rid of the 4x12 and run two 2x12's - it's just too big and I'm mostly just playing in my studio so the 4x12 is way overkill

    I for one don't need to see the actual unboxing - I prefer just an "exploded" view of all the contents as a brief intro where it makes sense.
    Also I find these shorter videos as addition to the speaker-roundup great!
    Cheers (to Zoltan as well of course!)

    John, have you compared the response of any vintage 30 alternatives like Warehouse Guitar Speakers Veteran 30 or Retro 30 to the early 2000s / 2021-22 batches? Since it’s difficult for most of us to check batch codes before we buy speakers, I wondered if there’s an alternative that would allow average consumers to guarantee a sound similar to the more beloved V30 speakers. Thanks for all your work!

      @@TheOtherJohnBrownecan’t wait to see what you end up doing with the v30 alternatives John. The eminence cv75 is another one which I reckon would be a killer speaker. I have the Weber grey wolf and silver wolf which are also in the v30 camp, worth a look imo.

      @TheOtherJohnBrowne  10 місяців тому +1

      Yeah! I have one "non scientific" test of one coming out today.
      I'd love to try a CV-75 but nobody in Europe is selling them at the moment. I wonder if they have been discontinued.
      The Weber speakers also look very intetesting but they are very expensive here. There is just one retailer here and he demands a premium and shipping costs about as much as the speaker when ordering directly from Weber

    Have you tried the 2024 models? is it in the same line as 2022? I have had several mesa cabs in v30 2012, 2008 and a 2017 engl and all 3 were very mediocre and harsh in the treble. On the other hand, I heard old mesa cabs in v30 which were incredible. the 2022 v30s look really good. you probably already explain this in your videos but my English is not great 🤦

    • @TheOtherJohnBrowne

      Hey man. I have not tried any V30s newer than December of 2022 and those were pretty much back to the tones of the speaker from between 2005 and 2021. It seems the smooth period from 2021/22 was short lived.

    How are you dating the cone batch codes? I've only found info on the frame and/or sticker codes. I've got Marshall G12's with P30 and R11 codes (all 444) in a cab made in 2015. Thanks!

    • @TheOtherJohnBrowne
      @TheOtherJohnBrowne  10 місяців тому +1

      I can't really date them as such but I have observed a pattern on all my speakers. From 2001/2002 on, the cones started to have this alpha numerical code that moves up in alphabetical order through the years. The numbers seem to be in reference to the letter.
      By 2021/22 they ended up at Z. After that they reversed the order of numberd and letter and went back to A.
      I have a 2014 with P18 on the cone and a very early 2016 with R28 on the cone, so the cones on your G12 are era correct.

      Yeah. I've been a Scarlett user for well over a decade. I used a 2nd gen 6i6 for the longest time and it was perfect for my needs... except when using the Focusrite control software when trying to reamp. I just can't figure that program out. Everytime I'd battle for ages with either no signal or screaming feedback. I know I am not the smartest peanut in the turd but I recently jumped ship to Audient and I could not be happier
