      Thanks Scott! It's well worth taking the time to get to learn a device inside out, especially the camera as they're so capable now.
      And I'm glad you enjoyed the photos 👍 had to put that college photography course to good use somehow! 😁

    This was such a well done in depth review. I do wish it had been a little less windy when you recorded this, with headphones on it got a little annoying at at times.
    and seriously I have no idea how you edit your videos on a phone! I'm always super impressed by the quality you get out of it.

    • @DaveWestMedia
      @DaveWestMedia  6 років тому

      Hey Mitesh! Yes, the wind was super annoying but all I'll say is I was getting sunburn very quickly - it didn't look like it but the sun was blazing by the time I'd got to the video tests 🤣
      It's a good point though and I'll make sure to shield the device when it's windy and pick a quieter time to talk 😁
      Appreciate your support as always mate 👊

    So I own the phone almost 3 months... Camera is great, especially in RAW, normal JPEGs tend to be oversharpened, when there's any foliage/grass/trees present, but shots of buildings etc. are looking great. There's infact no OIS but AIS is doing it's job great, but the crop is too much. actually found a way to stabilize up to 3K videos when using open camera. The night mode could be better, it tends to get green hue and images are hit or miss, it's better when you set exposure to at least 8 seconds. HDR mode works either only when you set exposure to brightest or darkest part of the image, everytime it's different... Also shooting in 20mp is useless, there is no improvement in details, images often come out less detailed than 12mp.

    This is the review I needed mate, you really appeal to new UA-cam creators looking to find the right tech for videos when they’re not at the point of buying a DSLR! I was going to get a Panasonic camcorder for my videos but decided to get the p20 pro after seeing this especially as the audio is good.
    I was looking through YT and there are no videos on what to use and how to use smartphones for new youtubers, they all jump to camcorders or £300 cameras, maybe an idea for a niche?

    • @DaveWestMedia

      Hi there, really appreciate the feedback, thanks! I've already posted a video on 'What Makes a Great Smartphone Video Camera' - the video tanked lol but I will continue making that type of video. Smartphones can record excellent video now, there's absolutely no need for anyone starting out to purchase an expensive DSLR when starting out, that can come later!

    I must say to you, I loved this Video Describing every single feature in the cameras and how to use them is for me exactly what I was looking for. The P20 is my old Phone, but I still use it as a second one. Main Phone is a Samsung Note 10+ but I like the cameras of the P20 more. I know this is crazy but try to compare same Snapshots with both Phones and you will see what I mean. sorry, it's just my opinion.

    Thank so much for the info and I took a good look at the shots you took and I must say I'm very impressed at the shots you took especially the star trails one. These shots you took shows you don't need a pro dslr camera. This summer I'm planning to shoot the milky way which will be fantastic.

    • @bushcraftandastronomer.3775

      I went camping in Glencoe near Fort William and it's a dark sky area. I was using the Hauwei p20 to get superb shots of orion and even Cygnus and photographed the faint band of the milky way through constellation. I used iso at 1600 shutter speed of 15 secs. My last few shots of orion I got so many stars within orion and Taurus with the seven sisters looking the blue colour of the cluster as I couldn't believe it. This phone camera is under extreme low light is pretty impressive. Camera did pick up light pollution even though area is dark. I even got the Great Andromeda galaxy M31 which is faint just viable to the naked eye. I'm going to attach the phone to my telescope with the motor drive. Try photograph the orion nebula M42 with with phone attached to telescope eye piece so that will be interesting how it will turn out. Any advice on that?

    • @DaveWestMedia
      @DaveWestMedia  4 роки тому

      Hmmm I'm not sure how that would turn out as you'd need to ensure the focus on the image inside the eyepiece is tack sharp to get the most out of the setup. There is a manual mode so you could use that and set the focus using the manual controls. Increase the ISO to the highest (usually 3200) and ensure the shutter is around 20-30 seconds to allow the most light into the sensor.
      You'll just need to do a bit of editing with the finished result to adjust to your liking 👍
      Please do share you images! Do you have a Google Photos folder? You could share that way, would love to see how the images turned out!👍

      Great news! One of the most underrated and under loved phones on the market - you really don't need 3 lenses in every day use and this does the vast majority of the things the P20 Pro does (including the awesome night mode) for lower cost in a more pocketable design.

    • @DaveWestMedia
      @DaveWestMedia  5 років тому

      Glad you enjoyed the video 👍 in the camera app, scroll along using the carousel until you see the 'More' option. From the available options, select 'Light Painting' then use the 'Star Trails' setting. You'll need to ensure the phone is mounted on a tripod in order for this to work, as any sudden movement will spoil the effect.
      For a really amazing image on a clear night, leave it running for 60 minutes before stopping. Incredible!!
      If you just want to take an image of the stars, set the phone on a tripod, go into Pro Mode, set ISO to 100, shutter speed to around 30 seconds, and use manual focus to ensure it's looking correct in the viewfinder. Press the shutter key and you'll have a great image!
      The Night mode is excellent, you can get a decent result hand held but the phone can detect when it's on a tripod and will adjust the exposure time - most I've had is a 50 second exposure - crazy!
      If you want to see some examples, see my P20 Photo Album here photos.app.goo.gl/PE6zCjxhxxKoutLcA
      Also, top for you. Try using the Night Mode to take shots in daylight, especially sunsets - you get a pretty spectacular super HDR image such as this one I took here;

    • @DaveWestMedia
      @DaveWestMedia  5 років тому

      Hi there, first thanks for your kind comments, appreciate that 👍
      Due to my video editing software the slow motion footage would not play slowly in my timeline workflow which is a pain! I intended to make a separate video but as the device was on loan I ran out of time, sorry. But to answer your question, 120fps is 1080p and 240fps at 720p. I don't know how much recording time is possible at 120 and 240fps but I would imagine there's no restrictions as if only slows down a small portion of footage which you can select once recording has finished 👍
      Appreciate you stopping by, let me know if you have any further questions!

I guess its easier to trigger AI on/off the way I have it then through the icon next to the flash icon, I just havent realized. Still I wonder why it is not listed, I remember the first days I bought it, it did show . I guess updates just took it off the list

      The P20 Pro has 5x zoom whereas the P20 only has 2x zoom. Both record the same video quality and have the same night mode as well 👍

    You said that the 12Mpx camera has only EIS? It should have OIS but works only up to 1080p 30fps, however I hope they will get it working on 4k videos too, don't see a reason why they can't enable it, because it's only p20's downfall as far I can see... Also is it better to shoot photos in 20 or 12mpx (not including zoom), any difference in details ?

    • @DaveWestMedia
      @DaveWestMedia  6 років тому +2

      Hi there, apologies. The main camera uses OIS for stabilisation on still images and the video mode uses EIS up to 1080p 30fps. It's a shame as the lack of EIS hurts the 60fps and 4K 30 video IMO. I'm not sure if they're going to update but I'll do an update if they do.
      I just leave the camera in 12mp mode, there's very little to tell the two modes apart TBH as the camera is so good. You'd have to really zoom in to be able to tell the difference 👍
      Thanks for watching, appreciate it 👍🙏

      Dave West No worries, I thank you for your very detailed and quick answer, everything comes from Huawei's crappy marketing about their "AI stabilization", then many people like me are misleaded, the photo quality is just top, but still can't chew throught that lack of any stabilization during 4k recording, let's just hope for some firmware update...

    Hello Dave, I do not understand one thing: what does it mean that the 20MP rear camera is B&W? If I want pics in colors do I have to downgrade to 12MP? So sll the pictures you took were at 12MP?

    • @DaveWestMedia
      @DaveWestMedia  6 років тому +1

      Hi there
      The monochrome option is in the 'more' settings in the camera UI and this is handled purely by the secondary 20mp sensor.
      Yes, all of the photos taken were in 12mp as standard by the main sensor. Please do bear in mind that the 12MP sensor on the P20 is 61% larger than the iPhone X's 12MP one and 22% larger than the 12MP main snappers on the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. Megapixels are only a small part of the story now with camera's - hopefully the results speak for themselves.
      If you need any more information please let me know 👍

      Thank you for the reply. I'm aware that MP are not everything, but I was just wondering if they really put at 20MP camera only to shoot in B&W. So can I shoot in colors at 20MP?

    • @DaveWestMedia
      @DaveWestMedia  6 років тому

      Hi there, just checked this for you.
      You can set images to 20mp in colour but you lose the 2x optical zoom option (as it interpolates for a higher resolution image - in 12mp mode the 2x zoom uses the extra megapixels as 'head room' in order to maintain the resolution when zoomed in.
      It's very clever stuff and one of the best camera's I've ever used on a phone 👍

    Does huawei P20 has OIS?

    • @DaveWestMedia
      @DaveWestMedia  5 років тому +1

      Hi there
      Originally I was under the impression the P20 has OIS, however, the main camera uses Huawei's AIS which uses the phones AI engine to stabilise images (this works especially well at night when using the Night Mode handheld - it's very impressive.
      In Video mode, it uses EIS up to 1080p 30FPS, then the AIS takes over for 1080p60 and above. Trouble is, it isn't very good at all and lets down what is a very good imaging device.
      Hope that helps 👍

    • @Naveenkumar-he7uv
      @Naveenkumar-he7uv 5 років тому +1

      @@DaveWestMedia But how does image quality is so good without OIS, they call it AIS (which may use OIS), may be huawei marketing that way, bcoz i see lot of website mention OIS in specs like gsmarena, phonearena, though some mention as no.

    • @Naveenkumar-he7uv
      @Naveenkumar-he7uv 5 років тому +1

      I mean it should have OIS atleast for photos if not for videos with such a good clarity and comparable to pixel 2 also

      Can you imagine if that stupid Nadella hadn't pulled the plug on Lumia what they would be like now. I mean we had OIS, 40Megapixels and HDR way back in 2012..... Manufacturers don't want ppl to remember that. I get the feeling they are artificially holding back the progression in video camera technology....so they can squeeze every bit of profit from cheaper shittier hardware....

    • @DaveWestMedia
      @DaveWestMedia  5 років тому

      I get what you're saying 100%. I love the imaging capabilities of the high end Nokia handsets before it all went south - I'm actually featuring the Nokia N8 in a new upcoming video series, may even check out the Lumia 1020 as well.
      For me the current leaders in mobile video are Apple and Samsung without a doubt. Everything from bit rate, image sharpness and stabilisation is absolutely top notch. Huawei need to learn a few tricks if they want their handset's to compete in this area

    • @jasonking1284
      @jasonking1284 5 років тому

      Yep. You are right, Apple and Samsung are currently the best video quality... shame, no... ridiculous, you have to pay close to £1000 to get what was offered for around £500 with a Lumia 1020. Sure the video quality in terms of definition and maybe dynamic range is better but what use is all that if its out of reach of most people because its too expensive or like the more affordable P20 a shaky mess....
