I've had the P20 Pro for about a week now. It truly is the next level of smartphone photography (albeit some issues in automatic mode)
So happy to see that a professional photographers view confirms this. Mind blowing! (I think he's gonna get one ;-)

Ehh nothing will ever beat the iPhone. I want to like the P20 but I’m really disappointed in the color accuracy. iPhone captures colors in a way that DSLR’s would. The p20 just doesn’t have it.
Gio Galvez No they don't, latest iPhones are all over the place, sometimes oversaturated, sometimes overcontrasted sometimes plain dull.
The Pixel with HDR+ is way more consistent with colors.
@@Mistygio that's false simply because every DSLR had different colours. + You can shoot raw with the P20 pro which means you can adjust the colours in post processing

Sacchi oh yeah since they make the Pixel phones. Most people won't go through the hassle of trying to get the P20 Pro in the States.
Maybe Google could try increasing the Megapixels of the camera which would help in capturing a more detailed photo. Google already have the best software optimization for its camera, a boost in the Megapixels could make it the best smartphone camera ever.

Took some photo's today of an underground early warning bunker. Sony A77 with the Sony 16-50mm F2.8 lens and took some of the same shots with the P20 pro. As some were very low light, such as an active radio room with digital displays etc without a tripod the Sony Struggled a bit, could either use the flash and have things a bit on the bright side and lose the atmosphere or try and tweak things out of camera. Then I tried the night mode on the P20 pro and hells teeth they were decent shots. I don't think it will be long before Sony or others feature this in their cameras because whatever this thing uses it is damn good.

Nice video, I think the Huawei P20 Pro is top of the line in the photography mode.
It really isn't though. Too much processing, portraits looks smeared, textures look weird, night photography is great though.
Isinox as for now, where the technology has reached I do not expect any smartphone to capture images like a DSLR camera. The point I'm trying to clarify is that I never saw a smartphone that captures fine images such as this one the Huawei P20 Pro. even with too much processing is still appreciable. Again, it is a 40mp camera which has a lot of room for zooming-in and cropping
Its is actually and even better in Pro mode. All phones have processing in them because it a consumer product and a professional one.
I totally agree with your points. I take random fast street photos all the time and this phone will be very useful for me. The advantage is that I always carry a small light weight phone that can take great shots quickly instead of a bulky DSLR camera which is heavier and takes more time to shoot the target. Yes, I will still use DSLR cameras in my studio or street photography when it is in my plan but, it is worth to get a small powerful phone camera like Huawei P20 Pro that can fill the gaps quickly.

The Problem you mentioned at 5:40 with the lens is actually the Bookah Effekt which is applied even when deactivated. This is a common Problem on the P20 Pro right now...

I have been using this phone for 3 weeks now and I can tell the camera's hardware is high level the problem is the software. I think auto mode was thought for Chinese market. Pro mode is other story it performances incredible. I really hope Huawei updates the camera in the Occidental market.

I really don't care about those reviewers who wish to shot everything in auto mode, there are many people like us who care how much this phone can be push the boundary of phone camera to a bigger sensor one so that in case I don't have my camera with me, I can still take useful photos with my phone
Camera is just great. It doesn't have ultra wide sensor like LG has, sadly. But BW or "monochrome" sensor is doing his job very well to achieve the true dynamic shot. Otherwise there should be a better bitrate for 1080p or 4k video. It lacks OIS or EIS as well in 4k and 1080p60fps mode as well. Overall, for a good money you'll get really good smartphone camera.

Regarding the P20, I would say the Pixel 2 is still the king (and it won't change anytime soon) in auto mode, but the P20 Pro is very appealing for manual\pro mode.. and the night mode is also crazy.
I currently use the V30 and extremely happy with it and its camera (with google cam installed) so I won't change anytime soon.

Currently own the p10 but this camera is another level. Getting this next year when contract is up and hopefully this becomes cheaper.

America can get it, but the USA can't (at least in stores). For example I can grab this phone in any store in Canada, or even Brazil, just not the USA, which is not America but USA!

Its an amazing camera (phone) but in all honesty only in 40mp raw and BW pro mode.
The other files are very oversharpened. If they lower that in firmware they have a killer camera that can also call :) I've created a series of reviews and images on my site and agree that this is the first phone that can be considered as a good camera.

Why do people always compare the night mode to normal shots on other phones? As you said it's an hdr image..
How do I stop my photos coming out blurry with this phone , if I take a picture indoors the pictures come out blurry where the sunlight comes through and reflects of objects I guess
At least show us the actual photographs, not a video recording of another screen showing the photos.

I have been using the P20 pro for three months now and I can safely say that the auto mode is shit. However, the pro mode is amazing! It sometimes delivers pictures indistinguishable from one's taken with a DSLR.

The lens IS NOT made by Leica. The camera software is. He got that wrong. You should've given him info to revise.
Well it says Leica Vario Summilux on the phone body so one would assume they don't want to miss sell something and be sued. It will be made under license and you cant expect the performance of a high end prime on a full frame cmos sensor but there is something very clever going on in the night time shots and the phone/camera does seem to punch above it's weight.
retepyam5858 leica made the software for my p9 pro. Huawei used a chinese company to make the sensor. They confirmed it. If you do a simple research you'll find this is true. It doesn't say leica lens like it should on the phone does it? Like carl zeiss lens. It's not miss leading because huawei have never said or branded it as a lens made by leica. But the software is developed as a joint partnership.
the thing is.. probably in a very near future someone will come with a photo app that will take most of the ai stupidity out of the equation or am i wrong? i hate the excess of processing

Sri Dhar my s9+ for me though p20 pro looks good I guess. Better battery life etc but sound media consumption and screen quality go to s9
Sri Dhar There was a very good pre order deal in my country with the p20 pro . they are definitely trying hard and working well to steal apple and Samsung custermers with that sort of offer. I already have a s9+ though and don't regret apart from battery life on the exynos version. hoping a fix will come out

He liked it but also pointed out the overprocessing of the photos. It's because he only uses a iPhone 7, so he doesn't know better that there are more smartphones who make great shots like Pixel 2 and S9 without over processed photos.
Not to mention the not so great video capabilities.
He knows and the point was to focus on what this camera does and how it takes images. Not a comparison. Check out the video we did with the S9+
Pixel and S9 photos have tons of processing, I mean LOL Pixel is famous for HDR+ which is a processing orgy

I'm surprised a professional photographer would hype the P20 Pro camera this much. I'm just an amateur but I do have high standards and I'm less than happy with it and the camera might be a dealbreaker for me.
For one, the over-hyped Leica camera is pretty useless in both Auto and Night mode. The oversharpening makes the photos basically useless, you get huge auras around contrasted objects in the photo. The only mode you don't get the oversharpening is in Pro mode, but then you don't get the expanded dynamic range of the Night mode. So overall the camera is no better or more useful than in any recent Samsung phone.
Fortunately I have a 14 day window where I can return the phone or replace it with a different brand but I feel sorry for people in countries that don't have these consumer rights. I really really wanted to love this phone but I'm going to swap it for the S9.
