Before I was even 25% the way through act 3 I had already achieved Ghost of Tsushima status, with every single piece of weapon and armor upgraded. Arigato to the team at Sucker Punch, tbh I don't speak an ounce of worth of Japanese but this game feels weird to play without the Japanese dub. May the story of the Bushido's Blade live on forever.
Wow, it’s interesting to hear that the Kamakura period isn’t represented much at all even in Japanese media. I never thought the Mongol invasion would be a time period people just skip over. Lots of cinematic potential there if you ask me. I also really loved seeing the Japanese professor’s unbridled excitement and how _happy_ both Japanese men seemed to be to experience such respect and attention to detail for their culture. It’s like... just wow. Words fail me. Now, I wonder if a Japanese studio could or would do the same for a western setting and historical period. How far would _they_ go to be authentic, if not strictly historically accurate?
I imagine it's something like the Western obsession with WW2 over WW1 aka "The Great War", where most people preferred to tell or do stories covering the Second World War. It's only in recent years where there's been interest in the gaming sphere in telling stories from the First World War, like with how successful Battlefield 1 has been on that front.
All Japan cares about is the Sengoku period followed my the Meiji oh and genderbent Nobunaga. 99% of anime and period pieces from Japan takes places exclusively in those time periods.
40 years of poring over only texts to try and build a mental image to then have it brought to life in near perfection. The old professor seems so ecstatic during the whole video even being childlike in his excitement at some points. Makes me happy to see him be so immensely grateful to have someone bring his 40 years of effort into moving life, even if it was fictional and unintentional.
The respect given to both Japanese and Mongols army in the game is incredible. Devs made more than just a homework. Huge respect to Sucker Punch digging deep into the cultures and history, not even trying to make a historically accurate game. I hope this game will be a perfect example for others on how actually you should create a good game. And yeah, fuck Ubisoft!

Hamburger samurai! Sounds nice! Because until now Japanese have made a lot of American soldier games and European Knight games.(Sushi soldier and Sushi knight?) That was reversed this time.
Really? Any particularly good ones? Ones with really impressive amounts of research and attention to detail? Maybe with an interview segment like this one, only with a western historian and a Japanese dev? Lmao
@@2yoyoyo1Unplugged There are honestly so many Japanese games that make games with western style settings. The question is if they are based on real life historical events, and how much are those games historically accurate. Take that into account and it will certainly be rarer. But generally, most games have some western elements to it. Japan has already been westernized since Meiji restoration so it's hardly surprising to see western influence in everyday Japanese life, and that naturally means games, too. For western games, I don't know much that has East Asian settings. They're def on the rarer side regardless if they're based on real life events or not.
Great job Sucker Punch! I would also like to compliment the company for getting the natural scenes right in accordance to the different habitat where those different trees thrive in and their appearances.
Ghost of tsushima was so good. They really really made a great original IP here. Lots of potential for sequels and building off of this game they created.
@@kaybee2286 Hate to say it, but I think that's a terrible idea. Tomoe's side quest was probably the weakest in the game because of its ending. And Tomoe is a survivor, she has no cause to fight for, and I didn't like how her character chalked up all her crimes to her 'need to survive', as if that's excusing her of betraying Tsushima and slaughtering innocents. The most logical thing to do is continue following Jin; potentially seeing him creating the clan of Shinobi/Ninja, with its own beliefs and rules; it's own creed. Because we are all so emotionally invested in his story and character, it doesn't make sense to ditch him in favour of some other character. This way, the sequel will be able to retain its "samurai" aspect whilst further expanding on the "Ghost" gameplay (more stealth mechanics, more weapons), as Jin tries to further refine the 'Way of the Ghost' and recruits people to his clan.
@@hagoromootsutski9058 I just finished the game and Tomoe's conclusion just feel really flat but then again I didn't like her all that much 🤷🏻♀️ If we get a sequel I hope that we wil play as Jin again!

the voice of fhe professor when watching those armours, you know that he finally can really see how it would looks like living in that era. he can finally see and no more imagine. he truly have the heart of a historian and a japanese
it's historically inaccurate, but it dramatically and thematically accurate. the armor, katana, and hwacha were from different time periods, but the way themes and drama were accurate to the perception of the time period. in some ways, fiction can be more real than history. this is one example.
The excitement and emotion of the history professor when seeing bits of the game is so endearing to watch. I mean, imagine spending your entire career researching a period of time and putting together the imagines in your mind of how those warriors and their Zeitgeist might have looked like based solely on historical written records... and then see it come to life in a game like this❤️ I was surprised to learn that the Samurai back then used to work on a similar reward system (promised lands) as the German Ritter in Feudal time. I'm researching this for a novel WIP and, for what I hear the professor say, the Samurai also used to get lands from their liege in return of their loyalty and defense. The many medieval castles in Germany were built by Ritter with money from their lords. They used to have one or several villages of farmers under their command to work the land and they had to give the Ritter up to the 30% of each harvest. In return, the Ritter was responsible for their housing and protection. I just finished playing Ghost of Tsushima and I'm now with the EP Iki Island. It's a masterpiece. Nothing less can be said. I strongly recommend it. It's quite a journey. I've taken so many screenshots because the game is so photogenic and breathtakingly gorgeous. Congrats to Suckerpunch for this work of art! I really hope Sony doesn't screw up the film adaptation and that they respect the original cast of actors for each role🙏
The difference between that game and ghost of tsushima was research Sucker Punch actually went to the island and thoroughly did their research and was smart enough to involve Japanese historians. Ubisoft relied on a liar of an author
One thing this game actually did was that it also painted the mongols in a more fair and realistic light. All too often when you see the mongol empire, or mongol armies in games or movies, they are depicted as an invading swarm of tribal, tent living, uncouth barbarian savages that rode horses and would rape and pillage anything in their path. Basically Khal Drogo and the Dothraki in Game of Thrones are based on these stereotypes. How they would overwhelm opposing forces with sheer numbers, when really the Mongols were incredible horseriders, swordsmen on/off horse, archers on/off horse and tacticians that had a vast number of cultures and type of weaponry spanning a huge empire. You don't take over half the world by just having numbers
He’s right about making people interested in history. I know a lot about genghis khan and the mongol empire but didn’t even know the mongols made it to Japan. I once heard a video on the subject say the mongols failed to make it to Japan because they were terrible at sailing.
Not really , they successfully conquered Tsushima and then headed for mainland Japan (twice) but both times they were destroyed by typhoons, it’s actually a crazy historical fact and almost unbelievable but it did happen
Correct me if I'm wrong, but "Yamato Takeru-no-Mikoto", the legend the professor was referring to, I think Garzey's Wing (greatest anime of all time) was talking about that too??
finished the game, story was a bit paint by numbers but had the right emotions, much like a period piece drama. would have loved to see them talk about akira kurosawa
Congrats on 9.73 million sales! I am very disappointed that a Japanese translation of this video will not be posted and about the quality of the Japanese lip-sync in Tsushima, which was added in the update.
This game was hands down game of the year for me and by far one of the best games I played in my life. I love it so much! And you can tell the people working on it out their heart and soul into the game.
The game was great but i wish if it were more kamakura period faithful in terms of armor and the tachi and bow, it’s more edo period but it’s still a great game.
Samurai clan armor and gosaku (older armor) are the correct in the time period and that's about it. Kamukura is so old that weak armor are destroyed except for the preserved o yoroi exhibit so there wasn't much variation recorded. That's the only armor you can get if you follow historical accuracy and it's not fun. Tachi is accurate in the game in terms of size and curvature except it is named Katana and bow is just bow.
@@valeriansage no that’s wrong, the samurai clan armor is Sengoku period and the gosaku armor is not that great, the swords in the game are only katana there’s no tachi, the tachi is a long more curvy sword worn upside on a hip belt used on horseback, like i said it’s a great game but not accurate at all.
@@anas-432 You might want to read what distinctive features of Kamakura period armor to later ones and tell me...the tachi you're right but the japanese version still localized it as tachi.
Very interesting. Very Ubisoft AC Creed like move to go for Historians as experts for their games. Everyone told them to make a Japanese Samourai-Assassin game. I'm from Montréal and I remember telling Ubi-Mtl to make one and that people, everywhere, wanted one & would buy it. They didn't. Big mistake. Lol! Well done Sucker Punch. The game is a beautiful work of Art and the fighting is on a superior level.

The small Mongol bow was OP as hell, actually. It had a double recurve, and also the first composite bow in history, so it's draw weight was comparable to much taller traditional bows. Even the people of Central Asia/the Middle East, who had fought in the mounted archer tradition since before the time of the Roman Empire, had trouble effectively resisting them. Nomadic Steppe people have been widely feared/respected as some of the best warriors since antiquity.
This game belongs to the top of any list of best games ever!!! Right there with games like Zelda, Metal Gear and Red dead redemption. Ghost of Tsushima is a MASTERPIECE!!!
American studio or not they absolutely kicked ass with this game. Far better than any shit that a Japanese studio would have tried to make, so many years to make an epic samurai game and not a single Japanese studio could do it. Bravo sucker punch!!
As someone with a History degree and as Dr. Hongo says it's ok to take certain liberties in entertainment such as a video game. If 80% of the game is true and there are no glaring "jump the shark" moments it's ok. Love Yoshida's sense of humor at 2:34 too. "It's like a 'Cheeseburger Samurai' game." "I don't eat cheese on my burger."
I really hope we see other games take the same ideas from Ghost of Tsushima and RDR2 with me personally thinking a game centered on the Romanticized Chilvary era of Knighthood in Medival Europe. I'm talking Knights/Princesses/castles/Duels/armor and Swords etc.

Facts, Facts! Me too son, me too!
To Nate Fox and the sucker punch team, if any of you guys read this comment for some reason at all, I want to personally thank you guys for making one of the best open world games that I have ever played. I would even dare place the game in my personal top 5 best games of all time. Your other PS4 game infamous second son was the only game that I got the Platinum trophy for, there hasn't been a game that I played that was made by your company that I didn't have an absolute blast playing. I unfortunately missed out on the sly Cooper games and rocket robot on wheels, but I would be willing to play them all if I were to get the chance. Basically every game you guys make is amazing. Ghost of Tsushima is truly a milestone in gaming, and it will in my opinion always be one of the best games ever made. So once again thank you Nate Fox and the Sucker Punch team.
They made the most realistic samurai game and yet so impactful. The game doesnt have giant snake, oni devil, no super human strangth. Just a lonely man struggle with his cause. Its beautiful. Its my fav along with God of War 2018.
I picked up Ghost of Tsushima the other day and It's sucker punches best game.
Easily
This was a great interview and loved what Professor Hongo offered in his knowledge of the subject.
Bought the Collectors Edition with the samurai/Jin mask....Its doubled in value allready......great investment and collectible
For me ghost of tsushima is a best game I ever played in my life
@@hindurashtravadi2563 it’s seriously up there for me as well, and I’m considered an old school guy now 😂(31 years old) but it’s up there with ocarina , Witcher 3, tales of symphonia, ff7 for me , you know games of that caliber . That title sequence still gives me goosebumps lmao
where can I buy one?
@@rovosunny1687 The Samurai mask from the collectors edition is probably on Ebay...Its expensive, but worth it....It looks beautiful.....I drink sake and put it on...I sit there and grunt at my wife....
@@mookiestewart3776 It was a little bit repetitive for me to put it up there with those titles, still a great game. If they can add even more gameplay ideas to a sequel then it will definitely be up there with the other masterpieces.
I watched this on my playstation
I was suprised how entertaining it was
Wow, it’s interesting to hear that the Kamakura period isn’t represented much at all even in Japanese media.
@@StrikeNoir105E "The war to end all wars."
"It ended nothing."
All Japan cares about is the Sengoku period followed my the Meiji oh and genderbent Nobunaga. 99% of anime and period pieces from Japan takes places exclusively in those time periods.
There have been a few manga covering the western era post the Civil War.
Sony, in spite of their recent flaws, truly achieved something remarkable with this game
This should have no less than a million views...How does it only have a few thousand
Incredible video. Thank you so much for posting this. This is the type of game that defines this medium. This video reminded my why I feel this way. Sucker Punch and Sony for backing their studio to take on such a daunting task of making this game are absolute gods. I will never forget this game.
Told my gf when this game came out that this is why I play games , every now and then we get something so good it’s difficult to describe , it’s simply art
And those wack ass “game” journalists said this was cultural appropriation or that Japan hated this game. They couldn’t have been more wrong! They tried so hard to cater to TLOU2 but the people spoke who was really GOTY.
You know you REALLY love a game when you're done playing it for the day, but look up interviews on it.
The game is a love letter to Japanese history and Kurosawa films I love it. 6:11 and I'm pretty positive somebody will probably will come up with the idea of making a movie based on this form of history.
Hamburger samurai!
Sounds nice!
Because until now Japanese have made a lot of American soldier games and European Knight games.(Sushi soldier and Sushi knight?)
That was reversed this time.
36:15 sucker punch might want to take the Professors story here as inspiration for a DLC weapon.
Ghost of tsushima was so good. They really really made a great original IP here. Lots of potential for sequels and building off of this game they created.
If they do a sequel, it should follow Tomoe’s story!
@@omdhdk yeah I was hoping she would face her crimes honorably or at least stick around and die in battle for Tsushima as one last honorable act.. but no she just books it to the mainland. She definitely doesn’t deserve a game about her
When I found out an American gaming company made this I dropped my soup.
the voice of fhe professor when watching those armours, you know that he finally can really see how it would looks like living in that era. he can finally see and no more imagine. he truly have the heart of a historian and a japanese
Only criticism I have is there should have been some groups of Mongols that fought with bow on horseback. That was the empire’s huge tactic.

That's the thing that makes me really happy about games being well founded in history
it's historically inaccurate, but it dramatically and thematically accurate. the armor, katana, and hwacha were from different time periods, but the way themes and drama were accurate to the perception of the time period. in some ways, fiction can be more real than history. this is one example.
thanks for the interview! great to watch after you beat the game!
The excitement and emotion of the history professor when seeing bits of the game is so endearing to watch. I mean, imagine spending your entire career researching a period of time and putting together the imagines in your mind of how those warriors and their Zeitgeist might have looked like based solely on historical written records... and then see it come to life in a game like this❤️
I was surprised to learn that the Samurai back then used to work on a similar reward system (promised lands) as the German Ritter in Feudal time.
I had to watch this and then watch assassin creed shadows and was wondering why tf was there no japanese on the interview of assassin creed shadow
The difference between that game and ghost of tsushima was research Sucker Punch actually went to the island and thoroughly did their research and was smart enough to involve Japanese historians. Ubisoft relied on a liar of an author
i can kind of tell the Japanese language adopts a lot of English into their sentence nowadays, even for a history professor.
That happened to most languages, actually. Probably since World War 2 ended and USA became the most influential country on earth.
I go back here after i saw Assasins Creed Shadow trailer...
27:11 was the most happy moment ...
I do love the straw hat and no-armor samurai look also because I love Jubei from Ninja Scroll.
Because of this interview I started game again. And I had completed the 2 times and I'm my third run🤣🤣🤣Because NG+
Professor expression at 29:55 is priceless
He’s right about making people interested in history. I know a lot about genghis khan and the mongol empire but didn’t even know the mongols made it to Japan. I once heard a video on the subject say the mongols failed to make it to Japan because they were terrible at sailing.
Not really , they successfully conquered Tsushima and then headed for mainland Japan (twice) but both times they were destroyed by typhoons, it’s actually a crazy historical fact and almost unbelievable but it did happen
@@mookiestewart3776 and those typhoons is why Japan had a belief for “Kamikaze”.
You missed out on playing the game "total war shogun". That game informed me about the mongol invasion over Japan.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but "Yamato Takeru-no-Mikoto", the legend the professor was referring to, I think Garzey's Wing (greatest anime of all time) was talking about that too??
Greatest anime of all time is bebop but yes I think you’re correct lol
91 hours, I spent 91 hours to finish the damn game. and every hour and minute was well spent.
Why doesn't that dude like cheese and why did it sound like he was pissed of at the mere mention of cheese
lactose intolerant?
Would be awesome to talk to the composer about the musical choices. Great video, and emotional listening to the Professor
this was a great game. just sunk 45 hours into it. SP needs do another of these, maybe with some Ninja clans.
They actually nailed it. Even tho It`s leaning to fantasy/fiction.
You can tell that those two guys that just trolling him because that guy shows so much love for the game
I love this game I want a part 2

Just no
It’s 99% likely. Sucker Punch has done sequels in all their franchises ( Sly Cooper , Infamous )

What an amazing interview , I really appreciate the respect and appreciation between our two countries , it’s a really beautiful thing
finished the game, story was a bit paint by numbers but had the right emotions, much like a period piece drama. would have loved to see them talk about akira kurosawa
i never saw this interview before like when did this happen?
it is the deluxe and collector's edition bonus content
Lew De Lara Also available as a separate purchase on the PS Store now.
Ghost of Tsushima isn't a game, it's a weirdly long interactive Kurosawa film.
this is so cool to see. All these guys clearly love what they're working one
Completed 5-8 times, 200-300 hours in and still can't get enough if it 🔥
Congrats on 9.73 million sales!
@@valeriansage bro the o yoroi from the Kamakura is well documented and there’s many o yoroi sets in museums.
@@anas-432 You might want to read what distinctive features of Kamakura period armor to later ones and tell me...the tachi you're right but the japanese version still localized it as tachi.
Why don’t you type Kamakura armor on google and see for yourself smh.
Beautiful and well-edited conversation! Great game, too!
Great interview.
this is the best game ever , to me
GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME. CANT WAIT FOR DLC‼️‼️‼️
Need the sequel... For my all time favourite:- Ghost of tshushima
You can feel the love, its the same i feel as a player of this game..i say it to myself often.. also, now lets see a historian see the new assassins creed game😂
Absolutely one of the best videos I've ever seen on youtube!
In the beginning for a second I thought Bill Burr was doing the interview.
game finally came out on PC, i just finished everything. what a game man
Ghost of Tsushima > AC Shadows.
American studio or not they absolutely kicked ass with this game. Far better than any shit that a Japanese studio would have tried to make, so many years to make an epic samurai game and not a single Japanese studio could do it. Bravo sucker punch!!
The best game of mine in 42 years.....action, honour, graphics (PS5).
Best interview for sure
What a game and what an experience..
As someone with a History degree and as Dr. Hongo says it's ok to take certain liberties in entertainment such as a video game.
If 80% of the game is true and there are no glaring "jump the shark" moments it's ok.
Love Yoshida's sense of humor at 2:34 too.
"It's like a 'Cheeseburger Samurai' game."
"I don't eat cheese on my burger."
I really hope we see other games take the same ideas from Ghost of Tsushima and RDR2 with me personally thinking a game centered on the Romanticized Chilvary era of Knighthood in Medival Europe. I'm talking Knights/Princesses/castles/Duels/armor and Swords etc.
To the developer can your remaster The #1 Game Called Heavenly Sword for The PS4.
