Some of Tsushima clan members live in Aomori, the northernmost place on the mainland Japan. They are the descendants of the refugees from Tsushima when Mongols attacked the island. yeah there are not so subtle hints that Jin sakai may a proto-shinobi, first of all, jin attacks for the shadows, uses f*cking kunai, poison, smoke bombs, and perform assassinations, second historically speaking the shinobi were actually born out the idea that after centuries of wars and skirmishes it was becoming clear that the way of bushido while noble was not practical, and shoguns would use them kinda like black ops squads and bodyguards, I would love a sequel where Jin goes down further that path, maybe see him start his shinobi clan with his allies from the game.

The Mongol invasion of Korea was actually glossed over here, but it was actually a pretty interesting campaign in its own right. It took over 2 decades with the Koreans fighting tooth and nail to keep their country. Korea fought the Mongols with their regular army and "Righteous Armies", private militia groups that engaged in unorthodox tactics due to their small unit size. They utilized their mountain fortresses to stage defensive war on the Mongols, and the war ended up taking 6 campaigns before the Koreans, ravaged by the war and racked with famine, sued for peace. Korea was then given autonomy under the Mongols in exchange for one of their princesses marrying a Mongol prince, a fairly uncommon arrangement for Mongol subjects.
yes it was interesting. it took many attempts for the mongols to finally conquer Korea. these are the only nations (as far as i know) that managed to defeat the mongol invaders and maintained their freedom: - japan (reportedly, the samurai on ships halted the mongol advance with constant suicide attacks, until allegedly some storms destroyed mongol ships and stopped their invasion) -vietnam (by warfare on the sea, the vietnamese repelled two or three mongol occupations but were still subjugated to tributary payments. like the japanese, the vietnamese made use of the mongols' primary weakness, fear of the sea.) - Afghanistan (mongols were heavily defeated at the Battle of parwan and in smaller battles with afghan tribal warriors . it was the first mongol defeat ever. Afghan (Pashtun) tribes kept their sovereignty, but some afghan cities in the north were still sacked and destroyed) -india under Afghan rule (though india was ruled and protected by a Muslim Afghan/turkic empire (khilji dynasty). therefore the credit goes to these Afghans and Turks, and not to indians. The Afghan khilji empire killed so many mongol troops, that they built a tower made of the skulls of the mongol army) - chechenya (mongols were utterly defeated twice. both mongol invasion ended with the complete destruction of the mongol army) - java in Indonesia (jungle guerilla warfare forced the mongols to withdraw) honorable mentions: before mentioning the biggest and most impactful mongol defeat, here are some mentions of nations who were conquered by the mongols but only after a strong display of resistance: -vulgar bulgars (turkic muslims in modern-day russia. they defeated the mongols in the battle of samarra bend. BUT later, the mongols invade again and won.) -korea. it took the mongols like 6 or so attempts to fully subjugate the korean peninsula. now most decisive and mongol defeat: - egypt and Syria (ie. mamluke dynasty. mongols were decisively defeated at the Battle of ain jalut and in many other battles in the levant (like in the battles of Marj al-Saffar 1303, 2nd homs, elbistan ect). mongol rule pushed back and started to significantly decline.) it needs to be mentioned the mamlukes in Egypt and Syria were the only ones who decisively defeated the mongols in several conventional battles, effectively stopped their advance and repelled them. then, the decline of the mongol empire started.
@@zizouace4890 wow when you put it that way it seems almost like a world war, these people fought all kinds of other people who never even met each other
Only reason it took 6 campaign to conquer Korea was that in general every time Mongols invade Korea, they went "Peace, peace, we give up don't hurt" and when the Mongols left because of something that happened elsewhere that needed more attention, the Koreans went "Ha, we deceived you, fuck you".
Ghost of Tsushima is such an outstanding game! I love how Sucker Punch took a brutal event in history and made it even more brutal and fascinating in their game. It's highly addictive.
They actually sanitised it. The game is very much not brutal compared to what actually happened. What Sucker Punch has done very well is make a distant point in human history more personal to the viewer.
@@josephmoore9706 sorry for being late, but the game designers and story writers at Sucker Punch did say that they are not trying to make 100% authentic experience because doing so might offend some people. According to Nate Fox of Sucker Punch Productions: "This is a game that is entirely grounded in reality. We're trying hard to transport people to 1274 Japan. We're inspired by history, but we're not building it back stone by stone. We're not trying to rebuild Tsushima island. Our protagonist is a work of fiction. We actually thought about using some historical figures, and we asked some people who are more culturally aware than us and they said that it would be insensitive, so we didn't do it."
Influence of a storm on this war has been overstated as a whole. A storm was adjuvant after all. Yuan army made a decision on a tactical retreat at their war council because they suffered a great loss in combat with Kamakura samurai bands. They forced withdrawal by ship at nigh though any night navigations were very dangerous those days. And then, their ships were overtaken by a windstorm during their retreat. Consequently, a lot of them collided against a cliff, wrecked and sank off the coast on the way to their homeland.
I've always been interested in feudal japan, or just any country's history during the middle ages. But GoT definitely got me more interested of the mongol army, and their sheer power.

The myth that Samurai relied on Typhoons to repel the Mongols was actually something that the Kamakura shogunate created. In reality multiple battles happened between the Samurai and the Mongols, and the former more often than not came out on the top. The shogunate however propagated the typhoon myth to discredit the Samurai, in order to give an excuse for not giving out rewards to the nobles and warriors who did the fighting for them.
@@adenyang4398 What source? stop bullshiting with the romanticized version of Glorious Shogunate. I live in Japan and almost every school and everyone tells that they got lucky and Samurai at the time were not the same as Edo Period Samurai that actually had the chance to fight. Most Samurai at the Kamakura period didn't even had Katanas , Japanese scholars (Go watch Japanese documentaries if you bother) If the Ianding was successful Japan would've been devastated against 140'000 strong heavy armored with steel and chainmail army marching with explosive precursor grenades and wielding variety of weapons from different empires they just conquered with big ass shields that the Samurai never seen before. Emperor and Shogun's only reason to use this miracle of an event "Kamikaze" was for the National Spirit and religious unity and cultural revolution for all Japan, NOT for that you just said. Samurai were credited more than ever after that Event fool ( HOJO CLAN) (Shogunate is the Samurai! Shogunate discrediting Samurai makes no sense.)
growing up and listening to my dad talking of japanese history and culture and then jumping to now, where I can play a fully fleshed out mongol invasion as a samurai, feels so unreal.
If not because the weather, mongol would do the same to Japanese as of the rest empires from Russia to Israq that disrespected them. It would change Japan completely. Extremely good luck Japan has.
Many people attribute the defeat of the Mongolian army to the typhoon, but in the second invasion the Mongolian army was unable to establish a foothold on Japan's mainland for two months. The samurai's reinforcements arrived one after another from all over Japan, and even without the typhoon the Mongolian army would have been defeated because they could not supply.
I love how you guys drop content perfectly to coincide with gaming developments. As a child, one of the channels in the Bay Area showed annual NHK shows, what some call samurai soaps, and Hojo Tokimune was one of those. Good to see the broader context of what historically occurred as I continue my Ghost of Tsushima binge.
If it does it probably won’t be against the mongols. It’ll be him vs the samurai. Just like his uncle said at the end “the ghost will always be hunted” and says he is a traitor. 🔥
1281, the 2nd invasion of Tsushima which is 6 years after the 1st game. The "Ghost" is hunted by the Shogun yes, but the Ghost is good at hiding. Regardless of whether you killed or spared your Uncle in the game, the results is the same, the Ghost is a 'outcast' and is hunted down. But the peasants supports the Ghost, and most likely will not support the government in hunting him down (Jin single-handedly helped pushed back the mongol invaders in the game of course, he's a hero in the peasants' eyes). I can see Ghost of Tsushima 2 taking place in 1280-1281, where Mongols/Korean/Chinese forces invade Tsushima again, but this time, the Ghost is prepared and trained the peasantry in the ways of 'stealth' and espionage maybe. Late 13th century, ninjas were not acknowledged nor exist as a job/role. It's in the 14th century where they are 'rumored' and acknowledged, and 15th century is where they exist officially in the eyes of the public. It's also possible to have Jin have a "adopted" son in the sequel, where you play as his son in the post-game years after the invasion of Tsushima ends and the 'Ghost' was hunted unexpectedly (maybe Jin helped the Japanese forces and once their mutual enemy is gone, they stabbed him in the back). In this part of the game, you are facing the samurai now and is not technically the Ghost, but similar. Just like how Shiramura adopted Jin to be his son (and was killed or spared afterwards), we could have the same 'adoption' methods used by Jin instead?
What do you expect? Teletubbies group hugs? It's a useful strategy and there were way more creative uses of Humans. Like tiring the city defender's kids on your siege towers.
@@Humster The Japanese would do much of the same with Prisoners of war or cheap conscripts. They would aim guns and bows at them and say- if you survive the battle you're free. Send them forward and shoot arrows, firearms and sometimes explosives through, over and past them. Essentially if you weren't a samurai in Japan your life was SHITTY, even royalty was often taken hostage to capitulate other warring factions and for land. ALSO Japanese would test their swords on prisons... got a new blade? just take a guy out his cells and chop his ass in two... then complain the sword wasn't sharp enough and do it again. It became such a problem during several phases of Japan where Samurai would instigate minor offenses just to cut down civilians.

It's kinda strange, we failed to take Japan in the 13th century and Japan on the other hand failed to invade Mongolia in WW2. We are not meant to fight each other xD The Japanese invasion attempt was also covered in this channel by the way. Huge fan keep it up guys 👍
Yeah the myth that the Samurai were completely reliant on the Typhoon for defeating the enemy deserves to die, even more so considering the myth started out as a way for the Kamakura shogunate to discredit the warriors as an excuse for not giving out rewards.
Aden YANG I thought both the japanese and mongols agreed the thypoon was the major cause of mongol failure. Khubilai Khan wanted to save face, while japanese try to discourage another invasion and raise their own morale. It's a win win.
In 1281, the Mongolian army attempted to occupy Japan with a larger army. However, Japanese samurai were analyzing their tactics after the first Mongolian army attack on Japan. They built high stone walls on the coast of Hakata Bay, blocking the Mongolian army's collective tactics and firearm attacks. On the contrary, the samurai attacked the Mongolian army's ships at night and caused great damage to the Mongolian army. The Mongolian army left the coast once and settled in a bay on the island of Takashima to prepare their corps. This time, a typhoon visited there.
In the book Ghenko - The Mongol Invasion of Japan by Nakaba Yamada from the year 1916 it states the number of invaders during the 1274 incursion to be at around 40,000 onboard about 900 ships which if you do the math is about 40-50 men per ship accounting for sailors and troops. To me, this makes much more sense than 1000 ships at around 20 men per ship. Thanks for the video.
For a Malaysian who is eagerly waiting for his pre-ordered Ghost of Tsushima, he was thrilled of the mentioning of "Malaysia" at 13:50, a present country that he never would have thought to be mentoned in this video.

Korea was then given autonomy under the Mongols in exchange for one of their princesses marrying a Mongol prince, a fairly uncommon arrangement for Mongol subjects.
yes it was interesting. it took many attempts for the mongols to finally conquer Korea.
these are the only nations (as far as i know) that managed to defeat the mongol invaders and maintained their freedom:
- japan (reportedly, the samurai on ships halted the mongol advance with constant suicide attacks, until allegedly some storms destroyed mongol ships and stopped their invasion)
-vietnam (by warfare on the sea, the vietnamese repelled two or three mongol occupations but were still subjugated to tributary payments. like the japanese, the vietnamese made use of the mongols' primary weakness, fear of the sea.)
- Afghanistan (mongols were heavily defeated at the Battle of parwan and in smaller battles with afghan tribal warriors . it was the first mongol defeat ever. Afghan (Pashtun) tribes kept their sovereignty, but some afghan cities in the north were still sacked and destroyed)
-india under Afghan rule (though india was ruled and protected by a Muslim Afghan/turkic empire (khilji dynasty). therefore the credit goes to these Afghans and Turks, and not to indians. The Afghan khilji empire killed so many mongol troops, that they built a tower made of the skulls of the mongol army)
- chechenya (mongols were utterly defeated twice. both mongol invasion ended with the complete destruction of the mongol army)
- java in Indonesia (jungle guerilla warfare forced the mongols to withdraw)
honorable mentions:
before mentioning the biggest and most impactful mongol defeat, here are some mentions of nations who were conquered by the mongols but only after a strong display of resistance:
-vulgar bulgars (turkic muslims in modern-day russia. they defeated the mongols in the battle of samarra bend. BUT later, the mongols invade again and won.)
-korea. it took the mongols like 6 or so attempts to fully subjugate the korean peninsula.
now most decisive and mongol defeat:
- egypt and Syria (ie. mamluke dynasty. mongols were decisively defeated at the Battle of ain jalut and in many other battles in the levant (like in the battles of Marj al-Saffar 1303, 2nd homs, elbistan ect). mongol rule pushed back and started to significantly decline.)
it needs to be mentioned the mamlukes in Egypt and Syria were the only ones who decisively defeated the mongols in several conventional battles, effectively stopped their advance and repelled them. then, the decline of the mongol empire started.

Ghost of Tsushima could literally have a sequel 🔥🔥🔥
If it does it probably won’t be against the mongols. It’ll be him vs the samurai. Just like his uncle said at the end “the ghost will always be hunted” and says he is a traitor. 🔥
It could have three games. Tsuhima, 1st Attempt on Kyushu, 2nd Attempt on Kyushu. The map sizes on PS5 could be even bigger.
It's hard to make sequel you have 2 ending to kill or spare
Hellgatyr they can make one canon and the other as an excess choice to see what might happen

I love this guys commentary
In 1281, the Mongolian army attempted to occupy Japan with a larger army. However, Japanese samurai were analyzing their tactics after the first Mongolian army attack on Japan. They built high stone walls on the coast of Hakata Bay, blocking the Mongolian army's collective tactics and firearm attacks. On the contrary, the samurai attacked the Mongolian army's ships at night and caused great damage to the Mongolian army. The Mongolian army left the coast once and settled in a bay on the island of Takashima to prepare their corps. This time, a typhoon visited there.
Really makes you think how much infleunce the battles of the past could have for the future of history.

For a Malaysian who is eagerly waiting for his pre-ordered Ghost of Tsushima, he was thrilled of the mentioning of "Malaysia" at 13:50, a present country that he never would have thought to be mentoned in this video.
Also a Malaysian here, I didn't expect the Japanese pirates to raid all the way to the peninsula
One small correction, - the women captives that were tried to the ships were stripped of clothing.. This animation shows them simply tied to the ship,.. it was more gruesome in reality
The sponsorship so smooth it made me think ghost of Tsushima is a free to download medieval mmo strategy game
:( my uncle used to tell the story, how Tsushima fight back. RIP 1899-1992
Spartans: *300*
Japanese: *80*
Spartans actually fought well but samurais, they just got demolished by the mongols.
@@fybrogen7473 as the video said the them take give heavy blow to the Mongols including killing a commander so I guess some credit is due however the story told in this video may be more in line with War Tales, also Spartans managed to held up for so long because of the location when their enemy learn to get around that they got demolished,
They also were not alone they had help from 7000 other Greek soldiers.
@@eagle162 bruh regardless of whatever you say, it's said in history records that tachi and chokuto wasn't able to penetrate mongol armours cuz it was breaking or chipping while cutting through the armor so how are they gonna give heavy blow to the mongols when their swords are basically trash? It's merely the typhoon that held back the mongols.
@@fybrogen7473 okay I reply to before so not going to make this too long, swords were not even the main weapons of the attacking Force or any army ever( unless you include the roman) that comes from war Tales which a few years earlier
Talks about swords cutting metal helmets like paper, chokuto were not even used during that time they were long outdated, the storm did not save the day like I make mention before in a previous comment.
@@eagle162 i know it wasn't the main weapon but why they have to mention the chipping of sword in history records? It is most likely that samurais had bad archery skills or couldn't use yari against massive shields so they had to fight with their secondary weapon/backup weapon and it was completely useless...
I'm really fell in love with the samurai's spirit
