I have never programmed on the NES but generally using time for random variables is very common even nowadays. Computers are not truly random and the random number generators just use a series of calculations to produce a sequence of numbers that appear random. The first input in that sequence is commonly called the seed, if you start the sequence with the same seed you will get the exact same sequence of pseudo random numbers. I order to add some more randomness we usually don't hardcode the seed into the software, but we use something like the time instead. Because the users will not all start the game at the exact same time it will appear random to them.
I imagine you'd need emulator brute forcing tools to find all those favorable Bowser/firebar patterns to chain together. And is there a limit to how long a runner can reasonably wait on the title screen to advance the RNG? And with such low odds, suppose the first favorable pattern required several minutes of sitting on the title screen - would anyone even bother?
@ADEBISI ADEBISI I don't think I'm making it sound as impressive as it actually is. It already takes a long time just to have a run that makes it to world 8.
Great video! I'd predict that 18:58 is pretty much the human limit for a full warpless run. If someone gets a 18:57 in the future and I'd still be shocked. Hope to see a warpless TAS explanation & history video soon. :D

I don't. Imagine when somehow somewhen we reach perfect TAS time. Literally no time to improve, not even 1 frame. Literal perfection. I find it incredibly satisfying. Just like it happened with Dragster.
I’m not even the biggest gamer, but I find the world of speed running (especially SMB speed running) totally fascinating! How people discover these glitches and how to perform them consistently blows my mind.
Great run in GSA, I was rooting for you from the very start. It was a good time watching you dude. Your first match against Oshi, was legendary, with one life and 1 chance... Man, it was great. Awesome time!
The part that always gets me about SMB runs is that it's at a point where "better execution" isn't ever the solution. It's always about adding more and more tricks. No matter what there's zero room for error, you have to pick the fastest route you're capable of executing flawlessly.
I'd like to see people do "Double" versions of the "warpless" run. So you have to do the normal run, and THEN the very slightly different run with the buzzy beetles. The few very slight changes would make muscle memory a bit harder.
always look forward to your videos man, if you wouldn't mind doing other speedruns too like another SM64 one, or perhaps another popular speedrun I'm sure tons of people would love that. keep up the great work man!
Well, technically you would be able to match the TAS's record of 18:33.500. However, even if you were allowed to use left and right in your runs, most of the things the TAS does that current runners dont are not humanly possible. So while someone could technically achieve an 18:33.500, it is just not physically possible.
It'd be really easy to mod the controller like this, but you wouldn't save any time in a verified run. The rules for the leaderboards specifically state that 1) hardware modification aren't allowed , and 2) L+R presses aren't allowed.
So, in order to get good patterns... I guess we will have to do something similar to Paper Mario, where people reverse engineered the RNG and saved a lot of time by just jumping a bit more.
