    The most interesting thing about magneto is that he is such an amazing contradiction. He is a villain and terrorist using the tools of his enemies but he's also a multi-genocide survivor who makes a lot of great point and charles can be super self righteous. In fighting for his people, he has become the thing he hates but you understand how he got there. He's acting completely out of trauma and taking way to far and now harming mutant to don't side with him

    My god what a refreshing take to see someone call out Magneto.
    To be fair I don’t think the show has done a bad job at all, I’m more disappointed with an overwhelming amount of the audience thinking Magneto is justified. Everyone seems to have ignored all the lessons super hero comics have taught us from a young age. An eye for an eye is cool and genocide is a natural reaction….

    For real like Magneto isn't right he's constantly tried to destroy all of humanity and not just the bad bigoted humans he hates so much nah he wants all of humanity dead including the good decent people in the world who treat mutants with love, care , decency and like equals, also like you said Magneto wouldn't bat an eye to kill a mutant that goes against him I mean hell he came extremely close to killing the professor in this episode his own best friend so No Hell No Magneto is not right.

    Magneto EMP'd the earth to stop the attempted genocide of mutants and there is collateral damage. If Magneto stops, the Prime Sentinels turn back on and destroy or enslave humans. Even the X-Men need Magneto to keep the power off until they can defeat Bastion. And if they fail to defeat Bastion and Magneto dies, mutant kind will be enslaved or destroyed.

    I think the show made an attempt at going aganist Magneto's argument with Xaviers speech for coexistence in the space episode but it wasnt as flashy as Magneto dragging a couple of a dudes in space so I think people ignored it.
    I also like that this show has shown that Wolverine is the most loyal to Xaviers dream and he sees the bigger picture of what Erik is really doing.

      The problem I feel is that the speech is all just words. We've viscerally seen Genosha. I think where the show and X-men comics as a whole fail is that they don't do enough to prove that humans are actually receptive to Xavier's dream. The dream requires both sides to be willing to reach out and we have decades of examples of mutants being willing, the X-men as a team are a massive example of that. But we have far fewer examples of humanity being willing. So often it comes off as the X-men being naive. When I consider what Magneto being right would mean, it's in his fundamental belief that "either we exterminate humans *OR THEY WILL EXTERMINATE US.*" And to be frank, he has lots of evidence that they will, and far less evidence that they won't. I think the counterpoint to Magneto's belief isn't the argument that "genocide is bad", it's the argument that "genocide isn't inevitable."

    If the X-Men '97 is lacking a sympathetic non-mutant character to anchor the show then they should bring back Carly and continue to develop her relationship with Hank.
    Carly was the young woman who Hank helped to restore her eyesight in the episode 'Beauty and The Beast.'
    For bonus points Carly's father was bigoted against mutants, and Hank was anxious that Carly would react poorly when she finally saw his blue, furry face but Carly always knew Hank was a mutant because (of course!) she was used to "seeing" him with her hands.

      They have treasure trove of human characters to choose from. Sadly, most of them are tied to storylines that were altered to exclude them or characters that haven’t been introduced yet (Gabrielle Haller, Charlotte Jones, Lee Forrester, Fred Duncan, Colleen Wing, etc). Then there’s Dr. Peter Corbeau.

    I would say that the human race would have empathy towards of what Xavier was saying however you missed 1 vital part where the previous episode showed a news report of a Xavier being alive and on the Shera empire. According to Bastion the death of Xavier was a lie and was to be gain sympathy of the humans, but now that news was out and he had returned not many humans is gonna trust him after that.
    And keep in mind when Magneto returned in the first episode to be take charge he went and follow Xavier's dream and become a hero instead. It even led to him having the government declare Genosha
    a nation until it's downfall thanks to Bastion's Sentinels.

      Yeah I respect DJ but I think he’s conflating the #Thanos or Magneto was right sloganism with what the show or movie is actually presenting.
      The UN lady last episode straight out said what the situation was. Magneto simply knew we would give into our innate fear and allow a genocide or murder not out of anger but just apathy. We see mutants killed and just move on with our day.
      Bastion isn’t saving humans from mutants either. This isn’t even about co-existence, it simply who will live to see the future. Magneto is just ready to abandon Earth. Bastion wants to enslave mutants to Sentinels. Not humans.

    Magneto is right about the problem but wrong about the solution. And while it would have been nice for Magneto to just go and kill Bastion and call it a day, people always take out their frustration when they are discriminated against, on the weak people on the other side, not those who hurt them directly. A lot of shit talk about Crash (the movie famous for stealing Oscar from Brokeback Mountain), but that movie, though about racism, it shows something real, that when experienced racism, the person instead of fight back, they went and attacked those that depended on them. Their husband, their wife, their children, their workers, innocent bystanders. Anybody except the one that did harm to them.

    I was thinking about your point just a couple weeks ago. I agree with you that the whole Magneto is right thing is in fact wrong, and I agree that the show should have put a sympathetic face to humanity, but I think doing that is about more than just making the audience agree that genocide is wrong. Magneto is wrong to want genocide and that is just fundamentally true. I think when people start to say Magneto is right, what a lot of people are reacting to is the fact that we're rooting for mutants, the stories are from their perspectives and we want them to come out okay. I think the show and even the comics consistently fail to actually prove to us that Professor Xavier is right. The X-men always talk about the importance of the dream and of peaceful co-existence, but we so rarely get to see evidence that his dream can be reached. Genocide is bad, yeah. Very bad. But where is the evidence that humans won't be the ones to genocide mutants? We have lots of evidence that they will, and it's only the X-men who've stopped them.
    I think that the trap the comics and to an extent the show falls into is that they present a situation where it really seems like co-existence isn't actually on the table, where it really seems like either humans will exterminate mutants or mutant will exterminate humans, because how many times have humans tried to exterminate mutants? Sure it's always small bigoted groups of humans, but we hardly ever see humanity as a whole trying to stick up for them. Which is why I think having that human face, someone sympathetic to kind of symbolize the truth of the dream is something very necessary that's missing.

    • @OnlyStupidAnswers
      @OnlyStupidAnswers  4 місяці тому +1

      It's designed to provide the X-franchise an endless supply of conflict, but you're right, it undercuts the message of "coexistence is good", and it strains the metaphor of "mutant=marginalized community". It'd be nice to have them show at least one alternate future where things work out! haha - DJ

    • @velemamba260
      @velemamba260 4 місяці тому

      @@OnlyStupidAnswers I get that it's a conflict generator, but I'm sure you could still get that conflict while dialling back on just how universal the hate and fear seems to be amongst humans, and how easy it is to turn humanity against mutants. Just within the context of this show, I think it really could have done with showing more humans trying to support Genosha. Maybe do a thing where they show governments weren't providing enough aid but there were non-profits and just regular people coming to provide support. That kind of show of solidarity wouldn't have taken much time, but it would have demonstrated that yes, there can be co-existence.
      Something else I wish X-media would lean away from as well is dividing humans and mutants on a biological level. Bastion's claim in episode 8 that mutants will "replace" humans as the dominant species should be met with a response that mutants ARE humans, in every way that matters. They can do weird things, they look different sometimes, but they're born from humans, they feel and think the way humans do, with the odd exception. It's like saying if humans were suddenly just becoming taller on average than the previous generation that "tall humans are replacing short ones." Bastion wants to turn humans into some techno-organic hybrid like himself, how is that actually different from mutants? I hope they're setting up for that argument in the show, they seem to be with that bit about how Professor X actually went to Bastion as a child to bring him to the school.

    Gonna be a bit hyperbolic here, but this is a wild take. No sensible person is saying “magneto was right” to mean literally every action he takes is correct, magneto is right because his ideology is right. Professor X is an upper class liberal who loves the fact he can hide behind his white privilege. He had cerebro, could detect so many mutants, and who did he pick for his original team? All the conventionally attractive white people, he left the morlocks to live in the sewers, he did nothing for Genosha. Xavier’s dream is for mutant assimilation, he wants them to just be accepted, but wants the status quo to remain unchanged. Magneto wants liberation, magneto wants self determination for mutants, his first two acts after inheriting the mansion was to use Xavier’s wealth to actually help mutants and stand trial for his crimes.
    The magneto was right line wasn’t said after he did an EMP shutting down the planet, it was when they realized Charles dream will never happen, no matter what mutants do they won’t be accepted, so magneto is right to want a mutant nation, a mutant state, mutant laws. And Charles response? He was ready to kill magneto, knowing it would reactivate the sentinels, consequences he damned. Charles will ALWAYS sell out mutant kind to appease humans. Magneto fought on Genosha, magneto stopped the sentinels from capturing every mutant. Magneto IS right. History has proven him right, the comics have proven him right, the last writer who thought Magneto was irredeemable was Morrison in the early 00s (which was an incredible run) everyone else afterwards didn’t buy it, and the recent Al Ewing run finally out the issue to rest.

    • @OnlyStupidAnswers
      @OnlyStupidAnswers  4 місяці тому +3

      Magneto's ideology is inherently supremacist and isolationist and that's a recipe for authoritarianism and violence. That aligns him more with figures like Bastion. To say "history has proven him right" is not only incorrect, but implies that coexistence isn't a worthwhile endeavor in our own world. Should we all only congregate with people like us and violently oppose everyone else? I don't agree with that ideology, and would, in fact, say that is wrong. - DJ

    • @DrFabs671
      @DrFabs671 4 місяці тому

      @@OnlyStupidAnswers wanting a mutant state isn’t inherently supremacist, isolationism is a valid response when the whole world time again tries to commit genocide against you. History has proven magneto right, just look at current racial issues in the US today. Xavier‘s idea of assimilating has been tried, and while, it’s an arguable, Are better than 200 years ago, there’s still clear examples of societal and systemic racism happening in the US every day, playing nice with and giving concessions to your oppressors does not lead to liberation. And that’s why magneto is right, because unlike Charles he realizes there’s no common ground to be made with the people who want nothing more than your entire culture and people erased from the face of the Earth. Again in this episode, Charles was willing to sacrifice mutants by getting rid of magneto, knowing it would lead the sentinels to turn back on Charles’ whole deal is taking young impressionable people, and turning them into child soldiers (the O5 team). He’s not the good guy here.
