    It's interesting now that I'm starting to learn about herbs I'm noticing that a tea brand that my family always bought from has some of these herbs you talked about. The teas are from Tadin and the 2 most common types we would drink for someone who was stressed/anxious or just worried was Seven Blossoms and Linden Tea. The Seven Blossoms mix included Lemon Balm, Passionflower, and Valerian Root and now as I'm writing this I just remembered that the seven blossoms tea always smelled weird to me which now I see was probably due to the valerian root!! My mother told me a long time ago that the Seven Blossoms tea saved her from a time when she had lots of panic attacks it was the only thing that sort of cured her which is why she swears by it and still buys it to this day. Its crazy how something I thought was just a random tea my mom loves has all these herbs that I'm trying to learn about. So eye opening !!

    CAUTION about Tulsi / Holy Basil: Last year I planted Tulsi for its sleep properties. I am so grateful that I planted it in our old fishing boat that we converted to a raised garden. This Spring I was out of town when the snow melted and the soil warmed making it was time to plant a few vegetables.
    When I returned in mid-June the tulsi plants from the previous year had shot roots all over the boat and the plants were over a foot tall. The roots were so densely rooted and invasive that it took me a week of hard labor to eradicate it from the soil before I could plant my seedlings. Thank God the roots are thick and white which made them is easy to see and remove.
    Has anyone else had this problem? I Love Tulsi tea, but will always grow it in a closed container.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  3 роки тому +1

      That is not an issue here because it is hard for me to grow any kind of basil outside, I have to do it all in the greenhouse and even then what I get comes back from seed, not the roots. I do have ONE little plant I am trying on the deck and it is finally starting to look healthy.

    This was an excellent video lots of info I did not know. One of the beauties of herbal medicine is plants often treat several issues. We used linden leaves and flowers in our dog soap this summer and it was amazing for our ten year old husky/Australian shepherd who tends to get hot spots the past couple of summers. It worked amazingly. I put 2 teabags worth in the lye solution water container before tarring out the container and adding the water (in this case aloe gel instead) so I wouldn’t affect the amount of liquid in the lye solution at all. I figured it would be equivalent to steeping the tea. I also added 2 tbsp of honey, 2 tbsp melted bees wax and a couple of handfuls of oatmeal to the Castile base after trace. The combination worked wonders on his skin and fur. We have had no hot spots on his skin since.

    Sadly, I'm one of those folks that are extremely sensitive to Valerian root. It makes me extremely nauseous! I wonder if I should try the leaves and/or flowers. ? I could go to the health food store for catnip or holy basil. My borage isn't big enough to harvest but will sure keep it in mind. I am growing spearmint, which I love in tea. Thank you Heidi for this expansive list.

      Also, here is a video I did about problems with the FoodSaver tops and ways to remedy them, also, it is best when you double up the lids that you turn the top o ne upside down or have a designated one with a hole it in so you can get them apart after sealing (you will see what I mean when you get to that part in the video): ua-cam.com/video/CjkzxitE9UY/v-deo.html

      I do crush them sometimes, depending on the herb to get more strength but usually no. I also will sometimes add more water, again depending on the herb or blend and let steep again. Some can turn a bit bitter though if allowed to sit for too long.

    Valerian Root smells like someone stepped in 🐶💩! My mother-in-law brought some dried valerian root to the house that she had picked up at a health food store. We checked the bottoms of her shoes first then narrowed it down to her bag where the culprit was! Had to put her bag outside, none of us could stand it! Needless to say we never tried any of it.

      While I never thought it smelled like that, at least not the valerian I have bought or grown, it is certainly not the most pleasant smell, at least not the roots. The flowers and leaves are not bad though and I have eaten the leaves fresh from the plant and the flavor is also not bad but the root, that is another story!

      I will be selling valerian seed on our store once it is ready, which I should have some ready real soon as well as the pineapple weed. I also am selling calendula and several other seeds but have many more I am waiting on to put up for this year such as lamb's ear, borage, and more. I do have feverfew, marshmallow, and some others. I will not be selling catnip or wild lettuce but I am sure you can find seeds for those on other etsy stores. That is where I buy a lot of my seeds these days

      Just to clarify, there are herbal teas and true teas. Herbal teas are more properly called infusions because true teas all come from the same plant, does not matter if it is black, oolong, white, or green. I have never been a fan of any true teas but always have liked the herbal ones, even the store bought ones if they are a good blend but since growing my own herbs and creating my own blends, yes, I like them better than any I have purchased at the store

    I mistakenly bought cat mint instead of catnip this summer. I hope some time you will get a chance to go into the differences a bit more. I was attempting to buy catnip because we read that it has sedative properties for dogs and the bombs our neighbors like to set off in the summer (actually shake our house) really affect our dogs.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  3 роки тому +1

      I am thinking what I have is actually catmint. It has been a topic of confusion for years and is very difficult to find specific information that talks about the differences. I do have a catnip video coming out soon and I do not recall if I mentioned the only real differences I could find (and that was a hard one to dig up) and that is that true catnip has white flowers while catmint has purple. This is why I do not sell my seeds for these because I do not want to sell mislabeled seeds like what has happened to me. However, I see people on Etsy and nurseries that sell "catnip" with purple flowers and most sites you go to to try to find out more information will say they are the same thing. ARGH!
      Regardless, I can testify that at least in out what I have works for me for the sake of soothing pain and calming nerves so I would assume their benefits are very similar. The one clue that has me thinking mine is catmint is that the neighborhood cats leave it alone. But then again, I gave a start of mine to a friend who has a cat, and her cat would not leave it alone and eventually destroyed it. So....go figure

      @@RainCountryHomestead yup that is the info I am finding, too. I read about the flower color difference just now and the formal names differ slightly catnip is Nepeta cataria and catmint is Nepeta mussinii. They say the catnip is more weedy and the only one to make cats intoxicated, but so far nothing on the medicinal differences which could be a lot. The search continues. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer and God bless.

    Can you consume the NOW essential oils?

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  2 роки тому

      It is not the brand that matters when it comes to consumption, it is the specific oil. Certain ones should never be consumed while others can be in small amounts. I use peppermint and orange for flavoring such as when I am making peppermint patties or orange cream chocolate.
      Brands that claim their oils are the only ones safe to consume are lying and they are usually those MLM ones that are way over priced.

    A note of caution on lemon balm for anyone with low thyroid, Hashimoto's, or who are taking thyroid medication - do your research and talk to your doctor before using lemon balm for stress and anxiety. It can interfere with both your medication and your thyroid function. It's wonderful, but maybe not the best choice if you have thyroid problems. 🖖🏻

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  3 роки тому +1

      While we do not drink lemon balm tea a lot, we tend to enjoy it when it is coming in fresh in the spring. Patrick and I used to be on thyroid medication for 15 years each but successfully removed ourselves from it over 9 years ago and have no issue with the lemon balm. I think as with anything, it is a matter of not doing anything in excess and this is also why have several herbs that can do the same thing is wise so one can switch it up. If you are interested in how we took ourselves off thyroid meds, here is the video we did a few years ago: ua-cam.com/video/toj7Sh4vNGY/v-deo.html
