    I just recently started using wild lettuce. I forage and extract it myself. At 500mg, my asthma completely clears up, flemm and all. I don’t cough like I normally do and the lung freedom is way better then Albuterol or Symbicort. It takes about an hour, but it also clears my sinus cavities and is better then a typical nasal spray to me.

    I've made wild lettuce salve. It works incredibly for pain. Typically I would not share with as it is homemade. My two friends used small amounts. One for knee pain, the other on back pain. They were both flabbergasted at the relief.

    That's wonderful that you have both gotten off of your thyroid medication! And as an Agnostic person, who has two science (Biology) degree, I TOTALLY agree with you that nature is meant to sustain us, not all these synthetic drugs. I'm 52 and don't take any medications whatsoever. And I don't have pain or any maladies. I just eat organic and try to avoid sugar and stay as close to nature as I can in all parts of my life. I think one of the huge things ALL people, regardless of how we define our spirituality, could agree on is that our physical vessels are of this earth and the earth is what nourishes and sustains us. I've studied ecology and animal behavior and one of my heroes is a scientist name Edward (E. O.) Wilson. He wrote many wonderful books but one of his greats is called "Creation: An Appeal to Save Life on Earth" was a plea to religious people about protecting our mother earth, their God-given home. I recommend it. He's a wonderful man and many young biologists and ecologists have spent their lives trying to live up to his legacy. Thanks again for all your awesome and important educational videos! HUGS!

      There are many different herbs that can do the same things as the ones I grow do that may grow better in your area so it is good to have a list and then find what grows best. Mullein for example prefers much dryer climates than ours but is excellent for lung health and more. For us, we can get old man's beard which is a lichen that grows all around here and it has similar attributes as mullein. That is just an example but I have quite a few lists put together such as one for pain, one for antivirals, one for antibiotics, and many more. You will find them in this playlist and I still have more to add to it: ua-cam.com/play/PLzVtTPDzFPKEs8fB5HCfYibacHLnA645a.html

    So with your recommendations, I'm on the hunt. I have a black walnut tree, which is the neighbors, but it's invaded our yard over the 50 to 70 years that the houses have been here. I'm learning that a lot of the herbs I may be interested in will grow under it. The previous owners of the 2 houses had a huge flower garden that we dug under as new 20-year-old homeowners. Now that I'm interested in herbs, I'm realizing that there were a LOT of these herbs in that garden. There were even fiddle head ferns growing by the house that we dug up. I kick myself now, but I will get a small section of that back. You may not be a licensed expert, but you share enough knowledge to help get us started. For that, I'm thankful. Now I'm off to hunt for a book specific to the upper midwest. Have a great day!

      @@adolfpanzerbjorn8308 When we moved in to our house we were in our early 20's & did not want them. I certainly wasn't going to care for it. I hate working outside in the heat. I hate weeds & bugs. So we dug it up and planted grass. 20 years later, I've changed a little and want about a fourth of what was originally here. So I'll make a new herb & flower bed under the old walnut tree & see what happens. Maybe by the time I'm 60 I'll know what I'm doing.

      @@Minnesota_Mama_Bear but if you didn't want to take care of it you could just not take care of it and it would've lived or died either way you it wouldn't be any work for you but by digging it up you are expending more effort to intentionally kill them, I don't understand the mindset behind that

    Another bookstore that I try to use is Half Priced Books. HPB started in the Pacific NW. (And it is not Amazon, although Amazon also started in the PNW. 😝 ) If a HPB store is close to you, you can call them and they will actually look for the book you want for you and then transfer it to your local store. But, they have an online store for used and new books. Their service is top notch!
    If you can get to a store, they also buy books, videos and all forms of music, LP albums, CDs, etc. My favorite bookstore since 1980s, and they have lots of branches now.

    Good morning Heidi. So glad you brought back this herb video. You have chosen my favorites to talk about! Rosa Rugosa is amazing. My brother-in-law forbids me to grow it because it gets in the hay fields. We already have an invasive rose that we are burning out. The Rugosa has more vitamin C than orange juice. I will buy the rose hips.
    Another one of my favorites is Rose Geranium. I use it for cake batters. Place a leaf or two on the bottom of your cake pan, cover with parchment paper and pour your white cake batter. The geranium will scent your cake like rose water. Comfrey makes me bervous. I use it for fertilizer tea or a salve. Love- LOVE Borage! It attracts our bees to the garden and is loaded with Omega 3. Super Bees :-) I like to sugar the blue blossoms and use it in the oil form. Thank you for sharing these herbs Heidi. Yes, do refer to a reliable herb reference book.

    Since I live in SE Alaska, (a few hundred miles north of you :) ) I also have a lot of red elder growing (Sambucus Racemosa). The berries are edible both raw and cooked but if they're eaten raw they can cause diarrhea. I make a syrup of the berries and strain the seeds out (the seeds are supposed to cause severe digestive issues as they contain an alkaloid) and add it to my blue and black elderberry syrup. It is excellent for viral and bacterial illnesses as well as kidney issues. It also contains more vitamin C than the other elder species.

Along time ago, coming to know that weeds were wild edibles, and their medicinal values, and knowing the creator of them, far outweighs medicines of man which can cause more problems. With the way this world is heading, it would be nice to grow them all, having ones own pharmacy will be a good item to barter with. Though with the time it takes to learn and know them all, I think I’ll start with the basics, the ones for colds and flu, antibiotics, and pain. Ur awesome Heidi! Thank u

    I agree, we've added herbs every year, some have been failures for our zone but many more have been very successful. We also love horseradish and horehound. We also grow cilantro, I can not stand the smell or taste but when it goes to seed it' coriander and we like using this in our sausage and meat rubs. Speaking of vitamin C , we also use mountain ash berries( after a good frost) for making jam( tastes like orange marmalade) and dry the berries for use in teas because of the high vitamin C content. Buffalo berries are similar, but picking is a challenge with the thorns. Among our medicinal and culinary herbs are also dyeing herbs, that we grow to make our own dyes for wool, soaps, and other craft projects.

    What a great video :) Thank you for sharing your information.
    I appreciate the effort it takes :)
    I think our gardens would have a great cup of tea together, they are so similar!
    I can testify to Comfrey healing my 'abdominal separation' [basically like a tummy hernia, from caring a bambino 24 years ago who put her foot through the muscle wall [that was weird] - and then too much building / heavy lifting] - BUT - a very simple balm made with home grown and dried Comfrey in raw Coconut oil is healing the muscle wall very nicely - and will be keeping me off an operating table!!
    Hari Bol! Praise Be!
    And my other big ones are Calendula, Thyme, Sage, and Tulsi too - especially made into strong tea and used as a mouth wash - it will heal gum and membrane issues, and has kept me away from the Periodontist ... or just drink as a hot tea for colds and flu type bugs... And it has healed my friends eczema - he hates 'hippy stuff' but was willing to try anything to stop the eczema from driving him crazy - now he tells everyone about it!! :) ... Just dried, and steeped in Coconut oil, then strained and ready for use - nothing fancy here :)
    Or putting the dried flowers into a 'bath bag' and bathing in Calendula cleans the skin right up from such ailments - great for babies / infants who have eczema and / or dry skin - simply put Calendula flowers in the bath too ! Easy peesy with such amazing results :)
    Gosh I love plants!
    So if using herbs can keep me away from such things like surgeons knives and dentist bills - the happier I can be :)
    All these wonderful plants where created for a reason - we are blessed to have the ability to have our own pharmacies in our yards - or even a pot of basil on the window - I think we are blessed to have such amazing plants around us - and the handed down knowledge of how to use them - I could rant forever :)
    To return the info favor and thank you :) - one of my fave herb books is called 'The Yoga of Herbs' ... is is written by a Western Herbalist and an Auravedic Doctor - the combination of the two perspectives is awesome, but not really for beginners - so much info - and very handy quick reference tables too.
    Thanks again for your work!
    Hari Bol, God Bless and Praise Be :)

    I am currently taking meadowsweet tincture for pain (added benefit is it is good for the tummy) which I am attempting to grow this year. I looked into the feverfew and catnip (after watching your videos), however, I am also on a daily regimen of turmeric tincture, for anti inflammatory properties, which is an anticoagulant of which feverfew is as well. The catnip I was unsure if cats are attracted to it when it is growing and we already have plenty of "barn" cats in the neighborhood what with the grainery a block away. Did not want to fight with them tearing up and pooping in my herb beds. I hope the meadowsweet does well here. I was diagnosed with RA & AS 12 years ago and after constantly getting sick and having infections I quit taking the pharma (with my doctor's approval too) and started working on my diet in addition to herbal medicine. I am doing very well most times and can tell that the herbs do help me. I feel my best during gardening season too! Moving around and having all those fresh vegetables and herbs is great for the health and the soul. Thanks for all that you share as I do believe you help so many with your experiences and guidance. God bless.

    Very pleasant site. Thank you. Love to talk herbs. I grew wild lettuce in my garden one year. Was excited to use this wild plant. Dried the leaves and made tea several times and found that it seemed to 'leach' calcium from my bones each time I drank it! Tried it several times to make sure I was not imagining this effect, but my arm and leg bones actually hurt after drinking. The last time my teeth hurt so haven't tried it since. This was dismaying for me as I like to use herbs in lieu of other pharmaceutical remedies. As I write this, wonder if the effect was putting calcium into the bones? Is that possible?

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  3 роки тому

      I really cannot answer that as I have personally never used wild lettuce. I suggest you do some research into it. I do have a video list on natural pain relievers I can link you to if you want to look into different ones (not everyone can or should use the same herbal remedies as another):

      @@RainCountryHomestead HI Heidi, was just commenting on my experience with wild lettuce. I am an avid forager and med plant connoisseur.Of the self taught variety as you. A few classes here and there, but mostly self. Have lots of great books and resources gleaned over the years. As I said, love to talk herbs. While all the research touted the benefits of natural pain relief, stress reducer, sleep aid, etc; I found that it really hurt my arms and legs when I drank the tea leaf. When it hurt my teeth is when I stopped taking and composted the dry I had. God Bless.
      Glad you are here.

    Wild Lettuce isn’t toxic at all. I’m not sure who said that but my husband and I eat it straight off the tall stem but it doesn’t last long so I get the leaves and dry them, I also put it in vodka, and I save seeds but so far I haven’t had to use the seeds, they come up everywhere in our yard. It works for mild pain and alleviated even severe pain but not like you would want it to. We also have a purple flowered ground cover that I don’t know the name of for a pain killing plant. We also use passionflower and Valerian along with these if the pain is more extreme. But the passionflower can give you a mild sort of hangover. In the morning after sleeping all night it’s harder to wake up but once you get up n get going it goes away. For some people ginseng can wake you back up but on a few people it has the opposite effect. On me it depends on whether it gives me energy or not. Twice it didn’t work and made me feel just relaxed. I’m not sure why or what I did that made this happen. I don’t use it all the time but just when I’m wanting a boost. Maybe it can’t be mixed with coffee, I really don’t know what I did or didn’t do that caused the relaxed problem, rather than the boost of energy I normally got. Afterwards I talked to a service person in the phone complaining they were tired and I told her about ginseng and she said she tried it and to her it was a sedative affect. So the only thing I can say is try the ginseng to see. Almost all the times I felt like I was on some sort of speedy gonzolas day. I wish I could pinpoint what I did or didn’t do.
    Anyways I wanted to share our experience with the wild lettuce.
    And we put it in salads and ate it for Passover.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  4 роки тому

      Thanks for sharing on the wild lettuce, you are the first I recall sharing that. I had looked it up and every place I went to said it can be toxic, not just one, all of them. I am sure it is like anything though, it is the amount that matters. Even too much raw kale can be toxic.

    • @joyceobeys6818
      @joyceobeys6818 4 роки тому

      Rain Country oh wow, I didn’t know raw kale could be dangerous, We use kale and blueberries for smoothies almost every day. I don’t know if it’s too much nor what too much might be. I will check this out. I do know too much of anything is not good for anybody.
      We had a pile of the wild lettuce with our bitter herbs on Passover and we had no ill affects. We ate a lot but I don’t know how much too much is for this lettuce either. But I can say I had no pain, LOL.
      The only ill affect we have had is too much Passion flower causing that morning tired feeling of not being able to open your eyes. We actually prefer magnesium and just a tiny bit of valerian for sleep.
      I’ve got a funny story. Just last night my husband and I watched a video about herbs and it was sharing about rosemary for nerves. So I picked a bunch of rosemary out of the greenhouse, we usually only have just a bit of it, we ate a bunch to see what the affects of it were and it made us so sleepy, it knocked us out! LOL I never knew it could do that.

    What I do is look at the herbs already growing in your yard or around your area. I live in the country and was teaching my grand kids about herbs this summer. I looked out the kitchen window which is under a big shade tree. Just looking out the kitchen window I pointed out to them more than a dozen herbs that just grow naturally in folks yard all around the country. Well might have been one that was not natural lol garlic. But one would be surprised at what grows in your yard many think of as weeds like dandelion, wild lettuce, clover, plantain, thistle, black berry, curly dock or yellow dock, to name a few. Then look up what these are used for and how to use them. Then you already know what herbs grow naturally and specific to your soil type and area and would be good to collect seeds from and grow in a garden if you decide to could use more of them. Start out simple and expand from there. There comes a time when doctors and western medicine is a needful thing but most things can be cured not just treated with natural herbs many of which grow right in your yard.

    A note on growing mint: I have two methods I use that keep it tamed: shade, and neighbors that can fight back. It isn't nearly as prolific in my shade garden, and it is surrounded by a columbine, a hydrangea, and a blackberry bush. It has not spread at all into any other part of my garden. If anyone sees this and is worried because they've heard horror stories of it taking over the whole yard, that is not always the case.

    Wonderful, informative video! When we finally get settled in Washington, we need to get together for a crash course on Pacific NW herbs.
    I can attest to the problems in the pharmaceutical world. I've been given medications that needed other medications to deal with all of the side effects. I am on one 'poison' that I am weaning myself off of after 15 years. The withdrawals are horrific, but doctors don't tell you about that, mostly because they don't know.
