I love how Ryan says that and spends the rest of the episode pretending that real life works like horror movies, where a train might just keep running in the same direction forever and where an old man with a missing leg who warns you that it's dangerous to stand on the train tracks in a tunnel is a threat.
Anon: Did the conductor have stroke? Check on them. Hasumi: The window is blinded and there is no responses from the conductor. Everyone: I see absolutely no problems with this situation.
I don’t know how Japanese trains work, but on the subway where I live, the window to the conductor’s cart is a one-way window; they can see you, but you can’t see into their cart. If you’re having an emergency, you push the emergency alarm (as opposed to approaching the conductor directly…there really isn’t anything they can do for you except the same thing they would do if you pushed the emergency alarm). If the conductor himself is having an emergency, I don’t know what they do tbh lol
In most trains in Japan, they close the blinds behind the conductor when it’s dark outside (in tunnels, during nighttime etc ) so that the reflection from the inside of the train on the front window doesn’t distract them.
If the conductor had a stroke, the ARS or ALS of the train would bring the train to an emergency stop eventually. ARS (Automotic Regulation of Speed) driver would overspeed, cause an overspeed alarm, and be incapacitated so he wouldn't be able to clear the alarm, which would activate emergency brake ALS (Automotic Locomotive Signaling) driver would drive through a red signal, running over a tripper and causing an emergency stop
I want to say something about Ryan and Shane asking if Hasumi deserved to go to "hell" or wherever the train was taking her. Quite often in Japanese horror, no one has done anything wrong, if you so much as GLIMPSE something supernatural, that's it, you're done, game over. Supernatural things in Japan DO NOT take prisoners no matter what.
That's really interesting, that just random witnesses who don't even know they have seen the supernatural will be killed. I guess modern western horror mindset is pretty puritanical in comparison.
It’s like the Day of atonement series. You just happen to be in the wrong place wrong time, and ghosts will fuck you up. Edit:one game you play a cat that happens to see a ghost cat and that’s how you get mixed up with it
So what you’re saying is the absurd nature of bad things happening for no reason to undeserving people at anytime part of life has been internalized and expressed in Japanese horror fiction? That’s pretty cool, their horror is simply the horror of living in the world where bad things happen for no reason.
@@Everilid There’s this one manga (Japanese comic) I was terrified of when I first read it as a high schooler, I forgot the title but the legend of the story went something like: There’s a young girl wearing a gothic Lolita dress beneath a sole lit lampshade, the little girl only asked one question something along the lines of “Do you have a little sister?”, anyone who replied “yes” or “no” regardless will simply be affected by this supernatural event. The little girl - regardless of the person’s answer, will follow or disappear and become the individual’s “little sister” and crave the individual’s attention. Attention MUST be given to the Lolita, any attention not given to the Lolita will affect those close to the person. In the story the person had a little sister (?) and the Lolita grew jealous, harming the sister and haunting/killing the sister later on. Long story short: Those who answer the lolita’s question become affected.
きさらぎ駅 (kisaragi-eki) in hiragana, could be written in kanji as, 如月駅, or 鬼駅. Both would be pronounced the same but the latter takes on a much sinister and evil meaning because the character 鬼 literally means demon (and/or the dead). So, kisaragi station could mean demon station/station of the dead. You wouldn’t notice it at first because station names are usually written in hiragana so everyone, especially those who can’t read kanji, like children, would be able to read it.
actually this one and the one where the woman was trapped in the elevator are the scariest ones of the whole series to me. the thought of falling into some fucked up dimension where time is wrong and you can’t escape scared me so bad.
The elevator game scarred me so bad as a kid I subconsciously worry I’m gonna end up in some messed up alternate dimension or Backrooms situation if I do something wrong

Wow, this story is sending me back when I was in Japan for the first time. My friend and I took a train to visit a location not far from Kyoto and when we wanted to go back to our hotel in Kyoto, we took the wrong train. We noticed inmediately, so we got off in the next station, which was a small stop in the middle of the mountains with nobody around. At night. We had to wait like 15 minutes for a train to Kyoto to come. It was soooo weird.
@@AKAmainframe yeaaah, I'm so glad my friend was there tbh! At some point we recorded a video Blair Witch style where we joking said "if you found this video, we've probably disappeared so...". We were so relieve when we arrived to the hotel lol.

The interesting thing is: Theres actually a train station in the middle of nowhere in Japan. It's call "Seiryu Miharashi"-Station and was built only to enjoy the view from the seaside. There are tracks but they aren't connected to the any rail line.. So there can never be a train there. Maybe this story relates to that "ghost train station"
I love how at the beginning Shane was talking about how he missed going on trains and at the ends he’s like “Well I guess we shouldn’t go on trains anymore.”
so, at this point, ryan has called shane "not his daddy" on camera and shane has directly addressed ryan as daddy. hm. okay. love a supportive friendship!
I've read this from someone, it said more or less like this, "the stereotype of Japanese horror is, someone (or a group) who get cursed for being at the wrong place, at the wrong time. You can be completely innocent or unrelated (to the event) but you can still get cursed for being unlucky that one time." I can't get over this since then 😂
I love that Shane thought about the smartest things to do from the perspective of a woman (don't go down the tracks, duh!!)....up until he said go talk to the one-legged man.
my japanese cousins told me this story as a child and my take was always more fantastical, like if hasumi was chihiro in spirited away and she just accidentally entered the realm of the yokai. never knew that it was horrorifying for most people lol. good work on this one guys!
This is the correct reading, yes. A lot of westerners tend to interpret things that bad things only happen to bad people and that can often be due to cultural and religious upbringing. It's...a problem. Now we can sit here and talk about storytelling and morality but... that takes to long. The tl;dr is that bad things can happen to good people and stories that come out of Asia tend to acknowledge this early on. We don't see these stories coming out of Europe (and history largely ignored African storytelling for centuries, thanks a lot history) for hundreds of years. So we've got a bias. Hasumi innocently falls into an unseen world where humans normally aren't allowed and doesn't return. She didn't do anything wrong. It's very Alice in Wonderland but with a sinister twist and since she stumbled upon it, now she can't leave. It's a lot like stories about fairies coming out of Ireland and Scotland. Play with the fairies at your own risk. They won't let you leave after a while. This took me a long time to understand cause yep, westerner. I had a lot of reading and growing to do. It's less "oh the devil gonna getcha!" and more of interfering with an unseen world. Even if you didn't mean it... you're gonna either get killed or kidnapped. That's how these forces work. Kisuragi Station DOES inspire some pop culture where they do involve morality stories. But... yokai gonna yokai. If they feel like tormenting you over cheating on your wife the can do whatever they want to scare you. That's less of the devil and more of "no rules, am supernatural being, gonna part my cheeks and shit on your chair."
I really appreciate that banter the channers are having. "Follow the sound of the drums. Someone has got to be playing." "Where are you planning on taking Hisumi?"
hasumi: just trying to make it home. is seemingly innocent and truly afraid every supernatural phenomenon in the general vicinity: so i took that personally :))
Yeah, in Asian horror stories supernatural creatures don't give a shit if your innocent or guilty, they'll fuck you up if you step even one foot on their turf.
I liked this one. The only thing I was wondering about was the person who mentioned that Kisaragi is a game. Would've liked to hear more about the game.
As soon as they mentioned the game I seriously thought that she had entered a game world somehow and was being directed by people online bc they were the players!
I looked this up in Japanese, and apparently this story is so well known in Japan that people sometimes post about also having seen Kisaragi Station and somebody submitted to Google maps that the station is inside of the University of Tsukuba xD
I went to Japan to visit relatives with my Mom, and we took the bullet train that goes from the main island of Honshu to Hokkaido, which passes under the sea of Japan. Just as we entered the tunnel to go under the sea, my Mom says, "A lot of people died making this tunnel. There was something wrong about the rocks and there were many cave ins. I don't know why I'm telling you this, but I thought you would like to know." No. I did not need to know that. Really ... no. I spent the entire time in the tunnel paranoid, counting the seconds between the flashes of the side access tunnels (?), so that just in case there was an accident or something I would know which direction we should go. Thank you, Mom!
My first thought of the old man is that he’s a ghost who lost his leg on the train track and died there and he’s just trying to help her not make his mistake 🥺
I have listened to this creepypasta multiple times on different occasions but I always remember the ending being different, where Hasumi was on a taxi instead of a train towards the mountains. Both are terrifying situations but I always imagined Hasumi being on the passenger seat beside the "man" while whispering nonsense, the distance between them creeps me the hell out. Anyways, great content as always! I truly enjoy the tandem and chemistry, sometimes I don't know if I'm watching a creepy video or just having a good time and laughing with some buddies. lol
I looked up the original Japanese thread, knowing that vgperson had a tendency to make some striking translation errors (at least back during the time she translated this thread, I'd imagine she'll have improved since then), and yes, the man called Hasumi a car to take her to the next station, not a train. (How would one call a train anyway...?) Incidentally, something else I noticed while skimming the Japanese thread is that that one anon speculated that the man could have been DISPOSING of a corpse, not that he was a corpse himself... lmao
i think whoever made the translation got it wrong, bcs the word train and car share one same kanji, '車' (this kanji is for car), while '電車' this is for train (more specifically for electric train). So i think its possible if they make a mistake, but i dont know
Just started the video and I have a tidbit to share: VGPerson is not someone made up for this story, they’re an actual translator known for their work with Vocaloid music and translating indie games such as The Witch’s House or Your Turn To Die. Just wanted to give that bit since I knew it!
I'm well accustomed to reading their translated works, and was really surprised to know they translated this! I was looking for someone who knew them lol
Big up for the anons who allegedly tried to help Hasumi in this story, I'd hope if I got stuck in a hellscape train station someone would try to help me as well
also at the beginning of the convo when the anons encouraged hasumi to share what she had to say even though hasumi believed that it might’ve been her imagination/insignificant, and the check ups by the anons on hasumi after a bit of no response
17:23 I love that the people who were giving her instructions were like: Wait. Our advice worked?! Also, these people in the story who are trying to help her are way more serious then I thought they would be.
I don't know why but I'm always really excited when you guys cover a story I'm already familiar with. It's kinda like the feeling when a book you like gets a good film adaptation.
There’s a lot of stories and urban legends of haunted train stations and ghost trains in Japan! There’s even a manga called Dark Metro that has stories about it. :) This one sounds similar to a train for the dead. It appears like normal but none of the stops are ones you know and full of the dead. It’s taking you to the afterlife and there’s a 50/50 chance of you returning home. All the other passengers tend to be spirits too.
I lived in Hamamatsu for 3 years and I’ve been on this train line. It’s about a 30-minute ride from Shin-Hamamatsu (in the center of the city) up to Nishi Kajima (more of a rural area) and then it turns around and goes back down to Shin-Hamamatsu. It’s only one straight line of about 20 stations total. And that’s it. It doesn’t branch off anywhere. And there are NO tunnels on that line. If what happened to Hasumi happened to me on that train, I’d be questioning my sanity because it’s too many things that are simply impossible. Especially the tunnel. So, yes, I would be scared. That being said, there are also some details to this story that make me quite certain it’s made up. So, no, I’m not scared.
This story is scary because, we all would like to think we would tackle a situation like this with logic and critical thinking. But... in reality emotions come over you like waves, that need to be out of danger and safe can take over. You can make THE most unintelligent and thoughtless choices in a state of panic. Getting lost and unable to figure out your location is terrifying, especially for the vulnerable. I do enjoy listening to these stories.
@@Pixel3572 actually no, I don’t believe in ghosts. she wasn’t being irrational, even though ghosts don’t exist she is still in a dangerous situation. being alone in a train station and having no idea where you are is a very scary premise. a new one to her as well, so she wouldn’t know what to do in that situation. I probably wouldn’t do exactly what she did but under stress I can see where she’s coming from. in fact, she was pretty calm given the circumstances.
LOL, I had a similar but way less dramatic experience around the same time! I was at Pride in SF with a friend, and we decided to try pot brownies for the first time. And then because we were idiots, tried a second. We ended up tripping balls, and taking the wrong subway. While on the train, I became convinced that we had died and were going to hell. Once we figured out we were going the wrong way, we got out at a station that neither of us knew, that was dark and completely abandoned except for us, complete with a locked gate at the top of the stairs, so we couldn't get out. Creepy shit while sober, terrifying while high. We ended up making it back to the original station, then taking a cab downtown so we could take the BART out to my friend's parents' house. I didn't become convinced that we were still alive until we got off the train! But yeah, I've always felt a little odd about trains and subways ever since.
this is definitely the best story so far, it's subtle, it's creepy, the characters are realistic. Plus, it's not the one with the eyeball devil, so that's another positive.
Hearing vgperson's name out of nowhere like that caught me off guard... haven't heard that name in a long time... really appreciate all the work they've done for the online translation community. Without them, so many indie japanese horror rpg games might not have had as large of a western audience as they do today!
I think waking up the people on the train was a good call. I probably would've done that than getting off the train in a station I don't know. There are some stations in Japan where a train only stops a few times a day and since it was late at night, that would've been the last train.
If this really was her personal hell train, though, chances are they either wouldn't wake up or they'd be too out of it when they woke up to be of much help.
i don't think i've seen anyone talk about just how good the intro for this series is in face-to-face contact cause like seriously it's just *chef kiss* every time i see it i get chills up my spine and it's wonderful
for me this was one of the most genuinely unsettling stories yet….. picturing myself in that situation is terrifying there have been some bangers recently, with the intense creepiness of this episode and the brilliant writing of the last one
This is a popular legend in Japan! I think there’s several games depicting this story- not this one directly, but Kisaragi Station always has certain beats and characters present. One I remember enjoying was by Chilla’s art, I can’t remember the name though. It’s a little weird during the train sequence but it hits most of the story beats found in this legend, especially at the end, where there is a possibility to survive.
as a japanese person if I were in this situation I'd fucking get off the train man like you don't want to get further from your actual station (especially if the train's been going for an hour you don't know when the next chance to get off would be) and it's really easy to navigate your way back to the right train using signs and stuff (unless it's a hell station ig) so yeah I don't blame her for getting off 🤷
@@catalinaaguirre3151 sure, but would you have the guts to be like "hey sleeping stranger can you get off the train with me"?? this poor girl apologized to the police for the inconvenience 😫

ARS (Automotic Regulation of Speed) driver would overspeed, cause an overspeed alarm, and be incapacitated so he wouldn't be able to clear the alarm, which would activate emergency brake
ALS (Automotic Locomotive Signaling) driver would drive through a red signal, running over a tripper and causing an emergency stop
Edit:one game you play a cat that happens to see a ghost cat and that’s how you get mixed up with it
Asian horror be like that.
So what you’re saying is the absurd nature of bad things happening for no reason to undeserving people at anytime part of life has been internalized and expressed in Japanese horror fiction? That’s pretty cool, their horror is simply the horror of living in the world where bad things happen for no reason.
@@Everilid There’s this one manga (Japanese comic) I was terrified of when I first read it as a high schooler, I forgot the title but the legend of the story went something like:
There’s a young girl wearing a gothic Lolita dress beneath a sole lit lampshade, the little girl only asked one question something along the lines of “Do you have a little sister?”, anyone who replied “yes” or “no” regardless will simply be affected by this supernatural event.

I've read this from someone, it said more or less like this, "the stereotype of Japanese horror is, someone (or a group) who get cursed for being at the wrong place, at the wrong time. You can be completely innocent or unrelated (to the event) but you can still get cursed for being unlucky that one time."
I can't get over this since then 😂

my japanese cousins told me this story as a child and my take was always more fantastical, like if hasumi was chihiro in spirited away and she just accidentally entered the realm of the yokai. never knew that it was horrorifying for most people lol. good work on this one guys!
oh wow thats kinda accurate XD
Yea that's accurate lol
@@jamie1602 I love this reading of it. This is so insightful!
A theory,
What if the one legged old man was a victim of the station too and was trying to warn her of the man in the station?
I really appreciate that banter the channers are having.
"Follow the sound of the drums. Someone has got to be playing."
"Where are you planning on taking Hisumi?"
hasumi: just trying to make it home. is seemingly innocent and truly afraid
every supernatural phenomenon in the general vicinity: so i took that personally :))
That last sentence applies to every SCP breakout. A random Class D tries to escape and then every SCP just attacks them.
Yeah, in Asian horror stories supernatural creatures don't give a shit if your innocent or guilty, they'll fuck you up if you step even one foot on their turf.

(How would one call a train anyway...?)
Incidentally, something else I noticed while skimming the Japanese thread is that that one anon speculated that the man could have been DISPOSING of a corpse, not that he was a corpse himself... lmao
I’d jump out of that car if I were her
i think whoever made the translation got it wrong, bcs the word train and car share one same kanji, '車' (this kanji is for car), while '電車' this is for train (more specifically for electric train). So i think its possible if they make a mistake, but i dont know

It’s only one straight line of about 20 stations total. And that’s it. It doesn’t branch off anywhere. And there are NO tunnels on that line. Like the one where the guy wonders why his dead girlfriend's FB account is still messaging him and the author attached screenshots to make it look real.
the thread is actually real, but yeah it’s likely that op was just making up a story but i do believe the responses were real
ryan: if she’s going to hell she’s rlly beings played with
shane: but isn’t that the devil’s favorite thing?
yeah, im sure you’d know that, wouldn’t you, *shane?*
not him miming the devil puppeteering when he himself is a master puppeteer
I want to like this but 333 likes is too perfect and I don’t want to mess that up 😂
Had the same thought haha....his description was very suspicious
*Train horror story*
Enmu: "Sounds like a plan"
he was the one that put everyone to sleep on the first train
Goddamn it Enmu
I love the voice of the woman who read for Hasumi. For some reason it made me feel calm even with a creepy story.
It was Marielle Scott! An up-and-coming actress... and Ryan’s fiancée. 😁
How did the man “call” a train for her? Are there private railways in Japan where you can just schedule a train to come when you want it?
Was that supposed to be “taxi” not train? That would make sense, though I don’t think Hasumi would get into the cab with a total stranger once it arrived.
in the original story the man called a taxi for her
Y’all really upped your game for this ep! The voice actors made it so much more immersive (Mari killed it) and the story seemed just unsettling enough to feel realistic and super scary. I also love how because Ryan wasn’t reading most of the time it seemed like him and Shane just butted in to make their little comments lol. Great work!
“This is banter.” -Shane Madej, 2021
Ah yes, I'm glad the Watcher team uses the same stock audio used by Buzzfeed. Feel like Ryan and Shane never left.
"I'm glad I stayed on the train."
"...Not the time to joke anon."
I really liked this story, shows a lot more restraint than most internet creepy stories by not tacking on unnecessary lore or monsters or an ending that solves anything.
That is, if it IS a fictional story.... Which I'm choosing to believe it is.
This is my first time watching this series. I didnt realize they had their own show outside buzzfeed besides puppet history. Its still a bit weird and sad that there wont be unsolved anymore (esp true crime, those eps were my fave) , but the new content is also intriguing and fun (well, its actually spooky hahaha). Looking forward to more!
Having a third narrator for the story telling feels so much better for the transition and narrative flow. Love this. 💖 Please do more like that.
This story is literally a perfect example of why i always carry a power bank and never use public transportation in the dark unless i ABSOLUTELY have to (and then I always make sure my bus goes the right way)
SAME!!
the way ryan always reads the ads in his ~special voice~ always sends me lmao like chill dude its some headphones not a horror story.
lol he even makes sponsors sound terrifying 💀
He makes capitalism sound as horrifying as it truly is, there is no better ad read. In this essay, I will-
I'm going on a vacation with my family next month. It will be an overnight journey. We will be travelling by trains. Thanks Ryan
it'll be fine, at least you won't be by yourself like hasumi was 👍
