Okinawa was my home for 20 years, and you've got some things wrong. Nevertheless, this is very interesting. Those F35 are probably Marine birds from Iwakuni, and they would be B models. There are about 13 different US bases on the island in addition to a lot of Japanese forces. Respectfully, Gunny T sends

USAF Firefighter here (belonging to the Civil Engineer squadrons). I was stationed at Kadena and also worked on Futenma from 2012 to 2014. Believe it or not, give it like a day or less-especially with the new airfield repair methods available on site now. AirPower will continue to be generated. USAF civil engineer squadrons are trained to respond and recover from a full spectrum of attacks. Not only that, but it’s no secret that the Kadena main runways aren’t the only options to utilize for fixed wing aircraft. Like you said, there are also other rings of defense not illustrated here, but I’m sure there would be more tricks up China’s sleeve too. COOL video guys, thank you. Gives chills thinking how very real that could be!

I wouldn't be surprised if the UN and NATO do nothing if they invade Taiwan like Russia n Ukraine. China is well off Why does Taiwan matter? Seems like a waste and unneeded risk to be burdened with. I get the south china sea for the oil. We did worse in the mid east for oil. I think they are smarter than that. Just keep hacking everyone's IP and chill out lol.

More importantly, at the south-west end of the Kadena AFB runway is the base golf course where in 1972 I spent most of my HS senior year playing golf with other military dependents. We'd play a side (always walking carrying our bags) and then sit in the clubhouse lounge drinking some fine ice tea and snacking on crisp french fries while we watched the stealthy Habu blast off into the sunset with engines burning beautiful shades of red and orange. The lounge was upstairs over the pro shop with a wall of glass overlooking the runway and the East China Sea. What a lovely place to be. I dated a little Japanese girl, explored the island some and had not a care in the world. VP Spiro Agnew came to the island that year to officially turn it over to Japan and implement the Yen as the currency replacing the USD. The Okinawan people weren't too thrilled about that.

What a cool memory. My dad was AF too but we never went overseas. My dad was an engineer working on guidance and tracking systems for missiles so we were in Colorado Springs and later at Kirtland/Sandia Labs.
I liked that, I knew he had an important job but my best memories of being an AF brat are limited to the bowling ally on Kirtland. We did have fun though, we had a group of girls that practically lived at the bowling ally. We would dress funny, wear dark sunglasses and just get silly. They always stuck us on the far end so we didn't bother everyone else. lol Good times, just in a boring place.

Hey guys! Was stationed at Kadena for 6 years. You did miss a few important assets: Japanese Air Self-Defence Force (JASDF Naha Air Base): 204th & 304th Tactical Fighter Squadrons (F-15J/DJ), 603rd Squadron (E-2C), US Navy: 7th Fleet, Carrier Strike Group Five (USS Ronald Reagan, 4 squadrons F-18 E/F) based in Yokosuka would likely be deployed, Also VMFA-121 (F-35B), VMFA-242 (F-35B) out of JMSDF Iwakuni. It should also be noted that US stateside squadrons regularly deploy to Okinawa and Japan on 6-month rotational tours. Typically include F-15, F-16, F-35A/B, F-18 and F-22 squadrons. Any would be alert-ready shortly after arriving on deployment. Also, Kadena hosts 909th Air Refueling Squadron (KC-135R) and E-3B/C Sentrys are the 961st Airborne Air Control Squadron. I remember as a kid watching F4s and F16s scramble in Korea. They took off slightly offset but side by side in flights of two down the runway. By the time the first 2 where about halfway the second set would start the turn onto the runway. They would kick afterburners and start rolling. There was a second runway that could be used for take off but I personally never saw that one being used. Very similar layout to Kedena AF. They would have about 12 in the air in a few minutes, did not take very long. Then they would to a series of touch-n-go's. By the way, if you ever get a chance, Okinawa is beautiful. Palm trees, blue water, sun... hmmmmm

We need to factor in the human issues. We don’t know how well trained or brave the Chinese are. The army is known for its rank cowardice. Chinese manufacturers are notoriously corrupt as is the entire military. We don’t know how well materials and Chinese maintenance will hold up especially with long distances involved. Another huge issue is prior warnings that an attack is being readied. We have satellites and numerous ways of monitoring everything the CCP is planning. The US has assets all over the world and several allies who might be available. With a few days warning the US could even strike a preemptive blow . If the US and the EU simply ceased doing any business with China the CCP would have a total revolution on its hands while dealing with being attacked and destroyed world wide. The Chinese dictator like Putin is a bully and will never take on any adversary that has any chance of winning. Nevertheless your war games are thought provoking even if they lack real word entropy.

Also have regular air patrols with fighters along with AWACS which would extend warning/launch time along with reinforcement from Kyushu islands and from Korea as needed. Not to mention the destroyers, cruisers, and carriers in the area and in range to assist or the carriers to launch aircraft. On top of that, we would have early indications of large flocking. Runway repair won’t take long either, especially considering no support infrastructure was damaged. Temporary repair can be done to allow aircraft to land if necessary, but full operations for heavies would be very soon.

Got at least (1.5) problems with the Scenario: Chinese intermediate range ballistic missiles have a range of 3000 km. There might be a 100-missile barrage on the military installations before any attack is even launched... not to mention they've already demonstrated hypersonics with global range. Their 'conventional' Hypersonics have a 2000 km range, also within striking distance. The Chinese will not line up and engage in a scenerio where they're half shot down before they even close the distance to scrambled defense.
IF the make their move later instead of sooner, Okinawa may not even have a base anymore: the locals are insisting on reducing its footprint. Nobody wants to be our next proxy battlefield.
have 1.5 more problems with the scenario: China has an increasing naval advantage. They have hundreds of hypersonic anti-carrier/ship missiles specifically to control the waters off their coast. They also have an advantage in numbers and concentration... They're not protecting Europe.

Good one, Cap. Great imagination. I was stationed on Okinawa in 1984 at MCAS Futenma (pronounced Futema), as a KC-130 copilot. Kadena AFB had a great golf course, club system and of course the SR-71 Habu. Habu is an agressive snake native to the island. Habu Saki. Everything stopped 15 minutes before the Habu took the runway. You knew it was coming because a couple KC-135's would take off. Plus ground control would announce over the radio for all a/c to hold in place. We'd clear customs there vs. Futenma, and witnessed a few Habus in the pattern. Futenma was about 5 miles away to the south. Not there anymore. Moved to Iwakuni.

There's some things about the scenario I feel are a bit off.
    - fuel and general defense strategy. You mention fuel requirements for the Chinese especially. This is something the defending American/Japanese side would be aware of completely, and as such I dont think they would just dive headfirst into the fighter escort. They would likely want to delay the fighter engagement as long as possible to make the fuel issues for the Chinese more prevalent (The further out they push, the less fuel they have, the earlier they need to turn around). You maybe take a couple 4 ship flights take R-Max Aim 120 shots, put 48-64 missiles in the air (Chinese have to honor these shots and burn fuel evading), and then RTB. All the while, AWACs/orbiting fighters are looking for the real threat: The cruise missiles. THOSE are the targets the Blue side would want to dive onto in force, as they are what will do the damage.
    - JASDF: This is an attack on Japanese soil, and their assets are just left out. Naha Airbase has a squadron of F15s and a patriot missile battery (Cant find it quickly looking at google earth, but the 5th Missile Defense unit is there. Naha doubles as a public airport so possibly tucked away). In addition, youd have to think additional assets would be deployed here if things got that tense with China. Theres also additional tanker support, AWACS, etc here as well.
    - Other Naval assets. The US 7th Fleet is forward deployed to Japan, meaning a Super Carrier is always in the region. As such, you would expect to see a carrier nearby giving additional Fighter/AWACS support OR alternatively, there would be land based assets deployed either directly to Kadena or MCAS Futenma which is nearby.

First, I want to make this clear. I'm perfectly content with the US's military capability. I write this stuff before I even see the result of the video and just after Super Cap finishes the briefing. I write this stuff in an effort to help educate some of the more casual humanoids on current US defense capabilities in the real world, the best I can as a civilian enthusiast using public information and analysis I read/view from those with more expertise than me. I enjoy attempting to spread a bit more factual information about US capabilities due to how old DCS technology is (as modeled) and due to the numerous amount of bugs within both DCS and the mods utilized. However, I still enjoy the war games videos a lot and encourage Cap and GR to keep making them! Thank you guys.
To begin, I personally have no doubt the US intelligence community, between human and signal intelligence sources (including intercepted communications, military personnel leaks, satellite imagery, and orbital sensors) would be able to detect the logistics involved in preparing an attack of this size. I don't believe any large military action by any country can be coordinated without detection in modern times, particularly a time-on-attack aerial assault launched at US assets on a constant level of high-alert due to the specific proximity of the Chinese mainland. If the US launched this same type of attack, I believe China would also have advanced knowledge.
On to the game! A modern Patriot battery consists of 6 (or 8 from another source) missile launchers by default (each battery is logistically capable of a maximum of 16 networked Patriot launchers per radar/command & control system; it's also important to note the US uses a fully integrated radar network. Therefore, data obtained from the F-35 radar and other respective models, including data from the F-15C's Data Link 16, the E-3 Sentry, and the E-8C J-STAR jets also stationed at this air base would all feed into the Patriot calculations. This also applies to any other US air-defense systems such as Aegis, NASAMS, Ground-Based Midcourse Defense, and THAAD when they are present.
The default loadout is 4x PAC-2 older missiles packaged and mounted in a 2x2 container and either 6x PAC-3 or 8x PAC-3 MSE improved missiles, which are packaged and mounted in a 2x3 container for PAC-3 or 2x4 container for PAC-3 MSE. The PAC-3 itself was a significant upgrade over the PAC-2 for anti-missile defense in addition to the higher quantity per battery, and the PAC-3 MSE upgrade offered additional agility and 50% increased range per public sources.
Therefore, the four Patriot batteries on the island would have a magazine of 96 to 128 PAC-2 missiles and 144 to 192 PAC-3 missiles for a total of 240 to 320 missiles (with the lower/upper bound determined by 6 or 8 launchers for each of the four Patriot batteries) using the default PAC-2/PAC-3 2/6 launcher loadout. It's safe to say (at 99% certainty in my opinion), that the Patriot is modeled to be much weaker than its actual real-world capability. Given the number of missiles launched by China in this scenario, the number of Patriot missiles deployed in the real-world, and the fact the PAC-3 MSE missiles would have much better agility/range than in DCS, I believe it's safe to say the Patriot modeled per real-world specifications would be able to neutralize most, if not all, of the incoming missiles for a majority of the hypothetical war game simulations.
Although I don't see a report with the US deploying this, a smaller and more maneuverable launcher using just the improved PAC-3 MSE missiles with 8 per launcher is called the MEADS air-defense system.
Since the US is patrolling the South China Sea with Carrier Strike Groups, USMC Expeditionary Groups, and individual Arleigh Burke Aegis Guided-Missile Destroyers, it's also somewhat likely there would be at least one ship with guided-missile defenses, a carrier air wing from a supercarrier, or a detachment of either AV-8 Harriers/F-35Bs from an LHD/LHA Amphibious Assault Carrier within range to assist in defense of the island. It's obviously not a guarantee, but I wanted to mention the amount of USN activity in the region. As an example, at this very moment, the USS Tripoli (LHA-7) is currently located in Okinawa, and it typically carries 8 to 12 F-35Bs, but is one of the new America-class ships designed without a welldeck, increasing the maximum F-35B complement to 20 airframes if they reduce the number of helicopters. It's also important to note, the ship has 42x SeaRAM missiles loaded, which may help in a potential incoming attack. Including a modern USN destroyer with the longer range of modern SM missiles (considerably further than what DCS models), it could potentially make all the difference.
Now, back to the video to see how this actually plays out! Cheers!
Here's a great overview of the Patriot system for future GR videos (a claimed 80 hours of research effort coming from a US Army Reservist)! ua-cam.com/video/RDJgQErMSdA/v-deo.html

      @jamison884 Рік тому +25

Based on a bit more research, I stand behind the conclusion (and most details) of my research on the Patriot being MUCH more effective, and absolutely capable of destroying this missile attack (and much larger attacks). However, it appears the full data-sharing integration of "all" other US-based air defense systems is an upgrade currently in-progress and to be completed in 2023.
Per my best research, it still receives updated data directly from E-3 and E-8C sensors, both of which are based in Okinawa. In addition, I believe the PAC-3/PAC-3 MSE missiles are designed to communicate with the Patriot battery during flight, I'm just not certain as to the limitations of that communication. The missiles have integrated radar, so my interpretation would be a combination of the communication capability from Patriot command & control combined with integrated missile radar would mean Patriot missiles fired on radar tracks would not self-destruct shortly after launch as seen in the war game. The missile calculates the predicted intercept point at launch and any self-destruct function would only be utilized if it went beyond that calculated point and didn't receive any electromagnetic signal from the designated target, or if the Patriot operator ordered a manual self-destruct. All my best guess/interpretation, but it's a difficult subject given the complexity of this system. What I do know is DCS is way off in modeling the Patriot system even if DCS is only modeling a much older version.

F-15s wiping out a numerically superior adversary is not unexpected, and the buffs the Chinese have in game make it even more impressive. The only thing I really take issue with is the stealthiness of the J20. I've read quite a bit about it, and it has some serious flaws that give it a much more sizable radar cross section than a stealth aircraft should have.

Home of the 554th Red Horse Squadron. My afsc, Pavements & Heavy Equipment, our mission would be that if the runway did get cratered like this in real life, we would have it up and running in 4-6 hours. Obviously with this many hits and damage, we would probably be logistically overwhelmed, with not enough heavy equipment and man power. In those types of situations though, you'd have to believe that we would use any available personal and resources to get the mission done though. Air Force Civil Engineers main mission is that Runway. So we would all be focused on it. Get planes in the Air and for them able to land. It would be a chaotic mess, but that's when we're at our best. There's a book with rules for everything. When shit hits the fan, the books are thrown out the window and training kicks in.

Question / modified scenario: Assume that the tension in the region was ramping up and the US, having run this very wargame, decided to beef up the Kadena / Okinawa defenses with a single Arleigh Burke DD off the west coast, say 15 miles from the base, until such time as additional SAM's can be brought in. ChiComs spotted the DD and hurriedly added a small leading anti ship element to the strike package.

When the B-3 comes on line imagine having a few B-2’s retrofitted as stealthy airborne refueling aircraft. Put four F-22’s with each one and use them to disrupt Chinese AWACS and/or bombers much closer to China. The use of F-15’s as missile carriers (10-12 AMRAAMs) and mix them with F-22’s are other options. F-35B’s armed for air to air would be safe away from airfields.

Before I watch the simulation, I want you to know that you have left out several important things. First, there are three air bases with fighters, Kadena, Futenma, and Naha (actually a Japanese Air Base shared as the civilian airport) there are also several peripheral runways on nearby islands. Secondly, There are many more air defense assets available, both US and Japanese, on Okinawa and nearby islands. Thirdly, the Navy has many capable assets in the area that could participate in this scenario. Lastly, it would be impossible for China to mount this attack without being noticed and possibly even preempted. This type of simulation is educational and thought-provoking but not very close to reality. By the way, I live about 2 miles from Kadena AB.

@@SlopedOtter Notching is a maneuver used to hide from certain types of radars by going vertical relative to the enemy radar, causing said radar to filter you out with the ground clutter (therefore hiding you from Radar missiles or locks).
I never tried it myself, the people who I know have said it rarely works properly.

    • @danielclark9193

@@SlopedOtter There are several types of filters in the electronics world. High pass, low pass, band pass, and notch are among them. A notch filter passes all frequencies EXCEPT for the selected frequencies which it blocks. By maneuvering the aircraft in such a way that you appear to be virtually still from the perspective of the enemy radar, you capitalize on this notch filter and the radar breaks the lock. Usually this is done by flying perpendicular relative to enemy radar. I hope this helps.

This is the first time I am watching one of these videos and I have to say, it was pretty awesome to watch and listen to the players interacting with one another and watching the whole thing come together. There are a few carrier strike groups floating around the area that are on standby at all times and when tensions rise between the US and China and or Japan and China those carrier strike groups are ready to go. Considering how this simulation turned out, if the carrier strike groups were included it would have been a bad day for China. There are also assets in the air basically at all times and you seem to have missed Marine Corps Air Station Futenma which also houses F-35's and such. Also, where is the JDF and all of their air assets, lol? Either way, awesome video, awesome narration, and awesome players to pilot!

@@Tyler-rs3wy yup definitely. And it doesn’t cover any diplomatic war implications. The CCP Military would have to neutralize Okinawa…which has several US bases. It was given back to Japan in the 60s. So it ALSO houses Japanese air, Naval and some ground forces. Thus CCP forces would be attacking Japan, not just Taiwan ROC. According to the treaty that ended WWII and demanded complete disarmament of Japan for a time, then stipulated only defense forces, a provision of that treaty is that the Allies (practical, US )are responsible for the defense of Japan from outside attack.
This kind of attack would begin at least a region wide war in Asia…if not WWIII. India borders China to th south and is already hair trigger with China after China ambushed border troops a couple years ago. They killed some Indians…then the Indian troops just went beast and put the entire invading force in body bags after HAND TO HAND combat.
