I was active in the US Navy between 2011-2017, and did 2 deployments in amphibious fleets acting within the 5th fleet (Middle East) and 7th fleet (Pacific) in 2013 and 2016. We had to act as "presence of force" in the South China Sea during both deployments as we crossed through 7th fleet, and moored in multiple ports of the surrounding states. China always has multiple subs and spy planes following our fleets to act as bravado, but it's crazy how easily we could blockade China from our positions all throughout Southeast Asia, while the US literally sits on the complete other side of the world.
That's why I dont blame them for taking up positions in the SCS, they know that Americans wants to keep them down. This is also why they have hypersonics ready to go in the SCS incase America gets uppity.
@@sleepyjoe4529 Except that pendulum swings both ways. China's also attempting to "keep down" It's surrounding neighbors through influence of force and expansion. While the matter of arguing who's in the right is subjective, it seems that the US, it allies, and China's neighboring states are objectively viewed as more favorable in virtue in their defense against Chinese expansion than China's demands for control of the South China Sea.
In part its true, China is vulnerable if they suffer a blockade, but the chinese goverment control a big part of mundial economy, and the key fact, the public debt. Probably the blockade of China is not a feasable option for the United States.
Someone finally thought of the smaller US carriers. Most of the time, people only mention the supercarriers, but forget about the "helicopter" carriers, all of which either currently can or could easily be modified to carry Harriers and/or the F-35.
The USMC specifically has been well ahead of the curve. They've been moving back to their roots for several years now and have been toying around with some next level stuff. A lot of the drone use we're seeing in Ukraine has already been tested by Marines going back several years. They are increasing the size of the fireteam to make use of these small surveillance drones that can also pack a top down punch using remote grenades. They want close air support on multiple scales. Keep in mind it was the USMC that first experimented with close air support in WW1. So now an assistant squad leader will help with mission critical and future cyber warfare capabilities on the squad leaders right shoulder, and a dedicated drone operator with 40mm remote grenades and likely other portable suicide drones on the squad leaders left shoulder. Every single squad will have the new Carl Gustaf. That's a lot of punch. Bye bye light machine gun. Every Marine sans the Gustaf gunner has the ability to lay down suppressing fire with the M27. They not only ditched their tanks but are also in the process of ditching most tubed artillery in favor of HIMARS which they proved can be fired from moving ships. Also eyeing the ballistic missiles in a shipping container concept. They are restructuring for island fights in a major way and with some serious ingenuity.
@@RJT80 - speaking of island fights, the U.S. has the only military in the world with a history of serious island hopping capability. While the Japanese occupied many islands it was seldom in the face of more than token resistance - and besides, those who got island experience were almost entirely annihilated by the U.S. in the course of the war. When I was a kid I read a bunch of books about that campaign that had been written by veterans with young readers in mind, and the ingenuity of American soldiers was amazing. In many cases they simply built the equipment they needed for a particular landing when the need arose, in theatre.
Technically if one thinks of aircraft carriers as being able to host fighter jets instead of just helicopters, then yea, the smaller LHA & LHDs of the US Navy counts. And recently the US Navy managed to bolster their arsenal further by successfully testing out the conversion of their 2 America-class LHAs, USS America & USS Tripoli, into being able to host 20 F-35Bs. So now the number of US carriers that can send F-35 jets into combat have increased from 11 to 13, without even building any new carrier. And the number of those LHAs will gradually increase overtime. Another thing this video didn't mention is Japan's Navy ("Self-Defense Force"). The Japanese are now even converting their 2 largest helicopter carriers into aircraft carriers to also being able to host and operate F-35Bs, and additionally the Japanese Navy has about as many destroyers, frigates and submarines as the Royal Navy & French Navy combined. All of Japan's naval assets will definitely be in full support of the US Navy in the event of war with China and their misguided fantasies of invading Taiwan.

Malaysian here - that was done during the time of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi, when the Malaysian government ceded some of the oil wells in Malaysian EEZ to Brunei, so the Brunei will recognise Limbang as Malaysian. For non-Malaysians, Limbang is an exclave outside Sarawak (Malaysia)-Brunei border. The people of Limbang had to cross the Brunei border to get to the other side of Malaysia; the other possible way is through the jungle. Malaysia's and Brunei's claims seem the most re seasonable. Obviously they have to work out the overlap that sticks out from Brunei. Give Brunei a bit more fishing area to let Malaysia travel through freely? Vietnam's needs about half cut off from it on the outer parts. And same with the Philippines. Obviously China is nuts.
That is because they are claiming as 'islands' which extend its reach. However many of these were not islands but shoals and reefs sometimes submerged and obviously inhabited. China though just dredge and reclaim to make them to islands.
actually the reason the Vietnamese claims are so vast are due to our millennium long occupation of both the paracel isles and the spratley isles which could go back to upwards of hundreds up to a thousand years in which we were the first and practically only populated integrity of the area, our Fishermans fished there for years and throughout the ages we claimed those isles as part of our civil ruling, until in recent times that is when China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei started expanding as well and asserting their claims, relative to them, we have proper documentations from ancient times of when we were first there and were recognized to be apart of our nation by the olden French Empire, the Qing Dynasty and the other powers within the region at the time, now China is claiming they were there first, illegally killing our soldiers stationed there in 79' and has been reasserting themselves ever since.
I might note that the "northern passage" route you describe goes right by Alaska. Yes the gap is a lot wider than 1.5 miles but radar sees a long ways and giant tankers and container ships aren't at all stealthy. If the US was blockading Malacca it wouldn't give ships trying to avoid the blockade by way of Alaska a free pass.
@@lomiification When we are already risking nuclear war by blockading Malacca? Why not? By definition if we are blockading Malacca we either at or willing to be at war with China and it's friends. Hostilities are already happening.

Especially, as you've noted, trying to do so almost literally in sight of a US coastline. Sigh.
To be honest, he also should’ve mentioned the Andaman and Nicobar islands (India) which are close to the malacca trait. Since India is a QUAD ally that has bases there, it’s conceivable that they could move to seize it before the Chinese and then wait for the US Navy to join in from their Diego Garcia base. @@1992kleenex If my country of Norway put up a blockade we would be in direct conflict with Russia, since they would have a massive interest in taxing this much shorter route in global trades. Norway as NATO member would be at war with China through the union with the US. But it would be a different beast to aggravate the Russian neighbour. We would effectively help "destroy" Russia's "only" source of trade partner China. This would threaten the existence of both as a superpower. So if the US dont want to fight China in Alaska, and fight Russia in Norway, the easiest step would be to just mine the bering strait or threaten private LNG companies with sanctions/sinking if they use the route.
But it's also next to Russia, which in someway, a Chinese nuclear-power ally. And you don't try to blockage Alaska route when even poor but crazy Russian Navy is nearby.
“China can use this new northern passage to avoid choke points like Mallaka” *shows a root passing straight through tiny spaces directly next to Alaska, a US State*
If anything, the Bering Strait is probably an even more vulnerable spot than the the Strait of Mallaka if for the sole fact that it shares coastline with the United States. Also Russia doesn't have forces deployed anywhere near the Bering Strait in any sizable numbers while Hawaii (& Pearl Harbor) is relatively nearby.
There are reasons the northern route was deliberately avoided 1) it's very seasonal. 2) it runs between 2 major supposed superpowers... Which means a worse off death trap if any of them two prefer to kill off china (citing past century of Russian/Chinese relations)

The ultimate problem with BRI is that while it might have some great political and social benefits, when it comes to moving goods... moving by land is 8x to 12x as expensive for $/ton/mile than shipping the same tonnage by sea. At some point China has to sell goods to someone else, and their cost to produce those goods is higher if they need to move raw materials in, or finished goods out via land.

Maybe i'm just being dumb but I can't see the Northern sea route being massively better as to get through it you would have to pass the Bering strait which in theory the Americans could stop or atleast make incredibly difficult if tension continued to rise or became a hot war. After all the other path shown just goes back through the strait of Malacca anyway so would this mean China would change from having a Malacca dilemma to a Bering dilemma. After all do we think both the Americans and Russians aren't going to be interested in building a base at such a strategic point when global warming makes the arctic more accessible
The US could block Chinese access to the Bering Sea because they control islands in the Bering Strait and there are also many bases in Alaska where ships could be sent to blockade China
Half of the Bering Straight is Russian. The Russians and the Chinese are allies. The Americans could block the East side of the Bering Straight, but would be unlikely to fire on Chinese ships travelling along the coast of Russia, as this could force the Russians to escalate in retaliation.
As long as they play friendly with Russia that shouldn't be a problem. They just need to hug the Russian coast. The US has no interest is going to war with a nuclear power even if it's a heavily stagnated one like Russia.

I learned much of this in school, some 20 years ago. Back then it was mostly about driving a wedge between communist regimes - the latest gas reserves were unknown (like in Ukraine...), but the importance of Taiwan and the region was already abundantly clear. Same for the support for dictators and Israel in the Middle East, or the invasion of Vietnam for that matter. The latter aimed to thwart China above all else - done more successfully in South Korea: creating an ally next door to China (the invasions in Iraq and Afghanistan have a similar origin, right next to Iran). The fact you compare this (and books, dedicated journalists - real information) to TV and the news (mostly entertainment) is just baffling. The latter want ratings and are nearly always shallow, short tempered and near sighted... The former often has little money, doesn't get (nor wants) much attention, but loves his/her work. You'd expect them in places like this, or in some obscure magazine/website. People like woodward and attenborough stand out, but it took them a long time to get noticed (since it wasn't about being noticed - not about them, but about their love). But better late then never I suppose. Quality takes time. It's easier to just keep peddling fear, temptation and sensational but pointless events. Makes money a lot easier and people who invest money just love that. This is the main problem with MSM (and to some extent politics) these days; their audience became too big and the MSM are offering the lowest common denominator in an effort to maximise profit - the achilles' heel of capitalism. Ideals are a lot more difficult to sell, they take effort... The dude here still believes in informing people and objectivity. That's rare in big corporations, especially when they are present on wall street, when they have stocks and a lot of people who just want money. In the end, all of this is about money. And the power it holds over people and their greed. Finding out the motivation behind a narrative is very important, each and every day - most 'impportant' people tend to be very manipulative. The number one reason why we don't like lawyers and politicians - and these days, oh so many journalists and tv hosts. The majority make a living by selling lies. And now there are conspiracies everywhere as a result...
You forgot to mention Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar islands which are way closer to Aceh, Indonesia than mainland India. It has a huge military presence and India is increasing that. Andaman and Nicobar Islands are our unsinkable aircraft carrier. India and China aren't really friends either and in 2020 there was a deadly skirmish leading to deaths in Himalayas. In case war breaks out and India is dragged in, India will inevitably ally with US and give Americans access to Andamans. Through Andamans, Indian Navy itself can choke strait of Malacca. A quad imposed blockade of Malacca through Andamans is a logical possibility happening if things go south.
That's a very good opinion, my friend, but in my opinion, Indonesia itself will determine the direction of geopolitics in Asia and world powers. So far, Indonesia is still clinging to the non-aligned movement that was formed with India, Yugoslavia. They still have very good relations with China. as evidenced by the abundance of investment and culture in the country, on the other hand, they also have a dispute with China over the Natuna island, just like India, which also has a dispute. Indonesia also maintains good relations with the United States and India. The question is how long will they maintain their neutrality?
In my opinion, countries like Indonesia and India must always be neutral in order to maintain the balance of the world because these two countries have a very important influence on the region and the world itself.
well I doubt India will choose for the United States. India does have an alliance with the United States because they want to beat China. I think India doesn't trust the United States either
India should realize the US can easily block Malacca, Hormuz, and Bab ai-Mandab from India as well and India have no alternative to Middle East oil and gas. Both countries are developing nations seeking to break the world order imposed by centuries of imperialism. India should understand if China isn't there it becomes the prime target of NATO attention

Genocide means the mass killing of a certain group. If genocide is happening in China then how is this video showing Uyghurs walking around and even having their population grow? Many Americans including myself did not know this but the Han Chinese were limited to one child, meanwhile, the Uyghurs did not have this limitation. The Chinese are pretty bad at genocide if you do your own research. Do these education/concentration camps exists? Probably. But keeping them alive in these camps does not follow the definition of genocide. Furthermore, do people ever wonder why they are in concentration camps? Here is a hint, they did things like what happened on 9/11.
RLL did another video focusing specifically on the Uyghur genocide as part of his Modern Conflicts series over on Nebula. He was necessarily brief about the issue in this video because YT gets REALLY sensitive about conflicts and more coverage would put the whole video at risk of being either demonetized or deplatformed. Definitely worth checking out on Nebula (which is totally worth the subscription).
@@npc2480 RLL did another video focusing on the Uyghur genocide over on Nebula. The thing about land trade is that it’s easily destroyed. Rail and pipes could be taken out with a couple well placed air strikes and I’m sure they would be put out of service for at least a couple weeks which would give time to make more strikes and with them extending so far you could treat it like futile warfare and attack and pull out all along the lines effectively ruining the supply for good.
They’re usually quite deep in the country that sending fighter jets would be a one way mission. Should the pipelines run through Afghanistan that place is as far from the sea as one can get. As for railways in Russia the aircraft would need more fuel than its operational range.

It may be that wide in some areas, but what RLL meant is that its most narrowest, the Strait is indeed 1.5 miles wide. I know if I were an American military strategist, I’d be blockading from the narrowest point, not the most widest. It saves resources that could be burned on other stuff.

To pass through the Arctic Ocean, you'd have to pass through the Bering Straight.. Alaskan USA on the east, Russia on the west. I don't think the US would risk nuclear war to blockade Russia's arctic trade route. Since the US cannot legally dispute that territory, they have no options to use when justifying a blockade. Russia would also have perfectly legal justification to attack in kind
@@LancesArmorStriking Russia would be taking the same risk by attacking. The question isn't if attacking is legal or justified, the question is _Would_ Russia attack the US if they blockaded the the straight. Consider that Russia is no match for the US, and that the risk of nuclear war is true for both sides, I don't think Russia would take the risk. The US however would, and I can demonstrate why: The US is already disputing China's territorial water claims by sailing their warships within those respective boundaries. If the US is ok with risking war with China, they'll have no problem doing the same against Russia.

A conventional war between the US and China would be the greatest loss of human life in the history of mankind and 95% of that would be Chinese.
China would definitely lose a war with the US!
US doesn't need to modify anything.
Harriers are no more. F35s suck. Try again.

Nuts is correct, China is in fact the biggest producer of both walnuts and peanuts
That is because they are claiming as 'islands' which extend its reach. However many of these were not islands but shoals and reefs sometimes submerged and obviously inhabited. China though just dredge and reclaim to make them to islands.
美国最疯,世界警察?😅
😅😅😅
actually the reason the Vietnamese claims are so vast are due to our millennium long occupation of both the paracel isles and the spratley isles which could go back to upwards of hundreds up to a thousand years in which we were the first and practically only populated integrity of the area, our Fishermans fished there for years and throughout the ages we claimed those isles as part of our civil ruling, until in recent times that is when China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei started expanding as well and asserting their claims, relative to them, we have proper documentations from ancient times of when we were first there and were recognized to be apart of our nation by the olden French Empire, the Qing Dynasty and the other powers within the region at the time, now China is claiming they were there first, illegally killing our soldiers stationed there in 79' and has been reasserting themselves ever since.
Thanks
I might note that the "northern passage" route you describe goes right by Alaska. Yes the gap is a lot wider than 1.5 miles but radar sees a long ways and giant tankers and container ships aren't at all stealthy. If the US was blockading Malacca it wouldn't give ships trying to avoid the blockade by way of Alaska a free pass.
Russian waters are also right there. Is the us going to risk nuclear war over trade in the Arctic?
@@lomiification When we are already risking nuclear war by blockading Malacca? Why not? By definition if we are blockading Malacca we either at or willing to be at war with China and it's friends. Hostilities are already happening.
@@lomiification Is Russia going to risk that? You have to keep in mind that Mutually Assured Destruction is still a thing. There is no Nuclear war, only global destruction. It would be ridiculous to suggest one side is risking something that the other isn’t.
He also completely ignores that ice isn't the only problem, shallow waters and a lack of decent harbours are also driving forces here. Having to use mini-tankers to load from shore pipelines and then rendezvous with proper mega-tankers AT SEA to cross-load, generates problems that this kind of wishful thinking simply leap-frog. Especially, as you've noted, trying to do so almost literally in sight of a US coastline. Sigh.
Was going to say the same thing. US won’t allow that passage, obviously.
China is already heavily militarising its land borders with India. I don’t like to think about it, but this whole situation involving at least 3 nuclear powers gives me the shivers

27:00 I'd warn against assuming that the north sea route is less dangerous for China than Malacca. After all, it passes right beside Alaska.
They can navigate exclusively within Russian waters. No one, including the USA, is gonna trespass into Russia for a 3rd party using Russias waters.
Not to mention, Norway, Britain, Iceland and Greenland/Denmark.

“China can use this new northern passage to avoid choke points like Mallaka”
*shows a root passing straight through tiny spaces directly next to Alaska, a US State*
If anything, the Bering Strait is probably an even more vulnerable spot than the the Strait of Mallaka if for the sole fact that it shares coastline with the United States. Also Russia doesn't have forces deployed anywhere near the Bering Strait in any sizable numbers while Hawaii (& Pearl Harbor) is relatively nearby.
Excellent point
in 2015, a small Chinese fleet transited though US territoral water of Alaska, and at the time Obama was in Alaska
There are reasons the northern route was deliberately avoided
1) it's very seasonal.

The People's Republic of China has a lot to worry about. Their lack of water, the population crisis, the chaotic weather brought forth by climate change, teetering economic collapse, social unrest, schisms within the ruling party, and now the consequences of Wolf Warrior diplomacy. If the PRC doesn't act carefully, this could cause the CCP to fracture at best, and collapse at worst.

That's exactly what I was thinking, and I'm surprised he didn't even mention that
Half of the Bering Straight is Russian.
China is also a nuclear power FYI

There is so much useful information in this video, combined with the beautiful graphics, it's excellent
This was absolutely fantastic. What an amazing job. I am so thankful for this channel's existence and content. Thank you!
India is too close to Russia now, sounds unlikely

A cruise missile in strategic places taking out all 3 plus a blockade of Mallorca would completely destabilize China and tank the world economy.
"I appreciate the length"
That's what she said
Genocide means the mass killing of a certain group.
China has imprisoned somewhere between 1 and 3 million of the 12 million Uyghurs, forced mass sterilization on them (the birth rate has fallen 85% in Uyghur dominated areas), enslaved hundreds of thousands, and on all of them have a surveillance state so incredibly invasive that the Chinese government tracks the whereabouts of essentially every Uyghur 24/7. Yes, some Uyghurs have been terrorists and carried out suicide bombings... after China dominated and repressed them, ala the Kurds, the Rohingya, the Jews, and the Native Americans. Is terrorism bad? Yes. Is incarcerating and slowly murdering an entire ethnic group bad? Much more so.

4:10 the Malacca strait is not 1.5 miles (2.4km) wide. A quick check on Google Maps shows it's around 30km large, and then small islands divide it in multiple smaller channels of 5-6km width or lower
It may be that wide in some areas, but what RLL meant is that its most narrowest, the Strait is indeed 1.5 miles wide. I know if I were an American military strategist, I’d be blockading from the narrowest point, not the most widest. It saves resources that could be burned on other stuff.
It may be that the navigable waters (deep enough for cargo ships) are only 2.4km wide at the narrowest point.

This is all well and good, but it overlooks the elephant in the room. Pipelines are extremely vulnerable. One man with a satchel charge can disable one for months.
Especially since defending a pipeline that stretches thousands of miles over lots of countries from a handful of saboteurs is basically impossible
The other elephant in the room, yes that trade route will thaw but will China even be liveable at that point? Along with a lot of other parts of the world. This channel doesn't recognize climate change. If China and the rest of the world keeps ramping up hydrocarbon usage we all will have to move to Russia and Canada and wtf will we eat? Chicken raised in farms with AC? And what will we feed the chicken with when the planet becomes a giant desert? And how will we even exploit that trade route when tornados will be an everyday phenomenon.

China has a lot of weaknesses...that China could have resolved by making careful assessment and involving her neighbours to agree on a better deal...but China is obsessed with looking strong therefore preferring to coarse instead of a little understanding and humility.
Now the international community is awake and her neighbours that have been waiting for good deal are making deals with Powers China has been trying to keep away...
For a nation that thinks she has long term goals and long term thinkers, this is very shortsighted from Beijing.
It’s all about saving face and hearkening back to the days where they were on top and everyone nearby was a tributary state. As much as the CCP tried to erase tradition and looking to the past they have fallen hard into it
Maybe things would be different if the US would stop treating every country that challenges their position as a global power like an enemy.
It's all the party and the values. Sure, the people of China could be so much better off if China worked properly within the international community. Instead, they are alienating countries that represent half the world GDP (Europe, North America, Oceania, East Asia). Why? Because projecting power is how the party believes it can best keep power. One would think that they would move to massively increase their solar, hydro, and wind power capacity (maybe nuclear as well, but Uranium is also a resource), not for green reasons, but just to curb reliance on oil and gas. In general people that are against green energy seem to miss that this is a national security question, even before the ecological question.

To pass through the Arctic Ocean, you'd have to pass through the Bering Straight.. Alaskan USA on the east, Russia on the west. It would be really easy for the US Navy to blockade that small passage too. Frankly, I don't see a win here for China as far as Ocean routs are concerned. I think their best bet is to develop land routes.
The pipelines are certainly a concern... If they're underground. Aboveground pipelines would be very easy targets for the US Air Force.
@@TheMacC117 using pipelines need some sort of booster pumps. Just bombing those pumps itself is enough to crippled the pipelines
@@calvinnyala9580 True, and I don't know a lot about pipeline infrastructer but if those pumps are located in or around Russia, it would be difficult because they have a lot of good AA battery. About the only good thing they do have, it would seem.

I wonder if this also speaks to the West's desire to promote emissions reductions to reduce the rate of global warming - and also the probable futility of it, given that the de-icing of the Bering Strait will have huge advantages for Russia and China in terms of energy independence.
