This should be in a museum when your done. There cant be many left this nice, mine is in good shape but no way as clean as this.
Haha thank you, I'm certainly going to cherish it!
this car is already nuts and I can't wait to see more.
Thank you! I can’t wait to share the rest of this build
Solid bushings are not that big of a deal especially on a subframe. For comparison, your front subframe is bolted directly to the chassis. Poly tears and wears fast too.
I am with this guy. They raise the subframe to correct the geometry as well as let you run tighter wheel fitment with less scrubbing as the subframe doesn't flex back and forth. Been running them for years with no noticeable increase in ride harshness or vibration.
Interesting! I wondering if this may be the case after the fact, maybe I'll put them back in. I did have them pressed out... Haha
It’s going to be so perfect I wouldn’t even want to drive it unfortunately.
I'm sure I'll feel a little bit of that and the previous owner sold it largely for that reason but I'm fully intending to enjoy driving the car, I'll just be careful when and where I take it.
coming along awesome man!
Thanks!
I love watching this series, since I am assembling my own hatchback and s14
Glad you're enjoying the videos and good luck on your builds!
solid subframe bushings are nice if u want more ground clearance for exhaust. raises subframe about an inch off ground. not noticeably harsh imo and not that noisy. i noticed solid diff bushings were what made my rear end noisy
Dang that’s good to know! Of course I heard all the benefits and that they aren’t that bad after I swapped them out haha
Solid subframe bushings are good if the rest of your arms are rose joint. If the rest of your bushings are hardened rubber / poly then go poly for subframe
A few others have said this as well, so I may end up running them after all.
they will cause more vibration but the plus is you'll feel everything that the rear is doing. After all the deadening leaving it solid may be a way to get some driving feel back
Go for brand new nismo rear subframe and diff bushings. I can dig you out part numbers if you need, some places sell them as full kits. Solid would be too harsh and polybushes can tear. Nismo ones are rubber and should last 20 years without needing replaced.
Way ahead of you! Already have the NISMO rear subframe bushings, just need to track down the diff ones. Been finding mixed info on the right part number for those since the S13 has solid mounted rear bolts from the factory and it only needs the front two.
I’m nervous for you for the inevitable left over bolts after you get them all installed 😅. I love how meticulous you are man this is such an S tier build.
You and me both! Haha I've been triple checking everything as it goes back together to make sure nothing's missing and being super thorough because I wasn't the one who took it apart.
please go AN Lines, you have done this much so far, and being in this position it shouldn't be much of a hassle (except for cost). Awesome series too. Also might look into getting a front-only HICAS steering rack over the normal as you will have a better steering input. also sus Bronze calipers to match the wheels imo
Yeah I'm with you, I pretty much have to do it. Haha and I 'll check that out, I hadn't heard of getting a front only HICAS steering rack before
i think having the arms silver add some really nice contrast then just black. great work so far cant wait to see the car at some local meets when its done✌
That was my thought too, adds a little contrast and makes the NISMO power brace part of a bigger theme. I ended up having the powder coat shop just add a coat of gloss to those 4 arms to make them match the brace better.
Excellent review of what's to come. A little concern with removing the bushing without damaging the subframe powder coating. Do your research to confrim the benefit of switching out. The performance upgrade may not be worth the cost and effort.
The bushings were pushing out before the new powdercoat was done, but may end up just using them.
Hi Do you need some light upgrade for your car to help you better driving, off-road? We're the pro auto lighting company for nearly 20 year and we're looking to sponsor some lights!
Probably a good call on the UI subframe bushings for a non-race application. Any clue what brand the solid bushes are? If you can find 'em, online it may help figuring out best way to remove.
I'm pretty anal, but I don't think I'd get the suspension bits recolored if it were my car. The variation is minor and the one item that is different is centered so I don't think it'll even be that noticeable... plus.... it's under the car... unless you're planning to give tours while it's on a lift, it seems like a waste of time and money to me. Now if it they were hot pink or something similarly out of place, that'd be a different story!
Now that Radium gear IS all baller... Probably overkill for a street car, but what the hell!
Last but not least that big piece of rubber tubing... It looks like the part number is 17228-31G01 which indeed is a filler neck, but I can tell you right now that's not for an S13... The filler neck is made of metal from the factory -- part number is 17221-40F01. There is also a rubber breather tube that goes from near the top of the filler neck down to the tank, but it's nowhere near the diameter of that one. Lemme know if you need help id'ing parts or need pics of anything -- I may have some pics of stock parts in my stash.
Not sure on the brand but we got them out and I have new NISMO reinforced bushings on the way to replace them.
And I ended up having them add a coat of clear to the arms, me and the shop owner agreed that was all they really needed to match better.
Who do you use for powder coating and dry ice blasting?
Certin poly bushings will space the subframe different then others FYI
I'd use the rubber with some push lok fittings and oetinker clamps.. Reasonable price and look professional/oemish.
I take them stuff to local shops that specialize in those areas. I’ll be researching all my bushing options, appreciate the insight!
@@avengednick I was curious what Shops, cause I'm local in Auburn and haven't had the greatest experience with my last powder coater.
@@flattratemaniff7554 oh, sorry didn’t understand you were local! For dry ice blasting I use CyroMode in Lynnwood and took my pieces to 425 Motorsports for the powder coating
Nice car, you need a stabilizer on you camera.
Thanks for the feedback!
What AC system did you go with? I have a 91' S13 and need an AC system.
Unfortunately, I still need to figure that out...
You are going to have a very difficult time switching bushings and you might just have to source a replacement subframe.
Those solid bushings are friction fit. You put them in a freezer and then press them in, so they will slightly enlarge the hole in the subframe. Also, when installing solid bushings you press out the entire stock bushing, including the metal sleeve. When installing poly bushings you burn out the rubber and need to keep the metal sleeve in the subframe to press the poly bushings into. Since you have solid bushings you're not going to have that sleeve. I doubt you will be able to source just the stock bushings to get that sleeve, and even if you could, it likely wouldn't be secure due to the enlarged opening from pressing in the solid bushings.
Solid subframe bushings really aren't that bad, I'd just roll with them.
I did end up having them pressed out the day after I filmed this, but I may end up keeping them based on what I've learned since.
Poly really isn't all that great. If you're going to swap out the bushings, go with the hardened rubber Nismo units.
I didn't realize that was an option, I'll have to see if I can source the Nismo ones you're talking about!
@@avengednick They're readily available, part number: 55400-RS590. I have them on my S13 and they've been fantastic.
Oh hell yes, thank you for confirming the part number. This is definitely the route I'm going to go!
Powder coat everything black.
The subframes and knuckles will be black but I decide to keep the arms silver to have other pieces that tie in with the Nismo powerbrace throughout the suspension. Trust me, I saw it all laid out and it's going to look proper when it's done!
@@avengednick it will look perfect. I am always paying attention to my notifications. I love the process on this build.
Ofc anyone and everyone in the comments are gonna say restore everything I'm more worried about your finances lol
Me too 😂
Hey will your parents buy me a bunch of parts too?
Haha I turn 30 this year, have been working since I legally could at 15, and have been busting my ass in my career since graduating college but that’s nice assumption you’ve made there.
