My dad has one of these he’s owned since new. One day he called me up and said ‘how would you like to have that car one day’. I said yes please, and he promptly went and spend 15k having the entire car restored to ‘as new’ so that it would last another 20-30 years and then he could leave it to me. What a total legend.

The mid 2000s bargain channel lol it is true. However I have to say this a great thing that jay shows us all these bargains we would never normally think of. It truly opens your mind to the options out there for your budget. I think he’s the only UA-cam to have nailed this.

I bought this XKR 4.2 Supercharged Victory Edition from new in 2006 when I lived in Vegas. It has a carbon interior with SatNav instead of the wood & dials & is painted in Copper Black metallic paint. The wheels are 19 inch. I still own it. And in 14 years of ownership, the only thing that has failed are a headlight bulb, two dashboard lights and a front wheel ABS sensor. It's also rust free. It does 24mpg (US) which is about 29 mpg in the UK around towns and over 30 mpg cruising on the motorway. It really is a head turner. And super comfy for long distance cruising. 400HP is plenty for most crappy roads anyway. There are better cars dynamically of course but few sound like that supercharged engine when you floor it. I think your review is spot on - a really nice looker even if flawed. But then so is Angelina Jolie.
I did have a quick question tho what would I do to reset the car codes to get a check engine light off the car is fine just a mass air sensor went out and the light has been on since
The rear end of the XK8 never looked right, even Clarkson commented on that when he gave the XK8 a glowing review on TG back in 95. It looks as though the designer didn't know how to finish the rear end off. There are plenty of cars with superior aesthetics. Top 5?! You require a trip to Specsavers!
I had a 99 XKR. I have never had a car where so many people have commented on how nice it looks. I had a new XK, Merc SL500, Jag XFR and combined still didn't get anywhere near the amount of positive comments as the XKR got. A fine looking car.
A proper car for proper car people. Not these built by numbers, copy and paste, generic car like all the new stuff. These still look great they've aged really well. Great stuff cheers 👍
I have a 1999 XKR, which I have owned for twenty years. I love it. It is cheap to run, reliable to a fault, a pleasure to drive and just nice to look at in the garage. I will never sell it.
David I’m looking to buy a 1999 xkr supercharger. It’s had 3 previous owners 77 k and a good decent history file . Looks superb but I haven’t a clue about cars . Shall I get the rac to look over it . I’m not in a good financial position I won’t be able to afford huge repair costs if a get a dud.. any advice
Had a 2002 Xkr convertible since 2013. Can not stress the rust issues enough if anyone goes to look at one. If you can see it on the arches or sills then it’s going to need a fair bit of work. Chains, tensioners and water pumps should of all been done on 4.0 engines by now, check receipts. Common myth that gearboxes are sealed for life, they are not and should have new fluid around 75k. The gearbox and engine are easily reset for shift points/drivability.Really nice cars and totally worth the effort, plus there’s a wealth of information available through very friendly forums.
Got one, 2004 4.2 convertible auto. Yes, it has faults but boy does it have character. We all have days where we want to drive like James Bond and days where we want a relaxing, luxurious spin. Not bad on the supermarket run either. It's not the best at anything, it's the whole package that makes it the best.
I’ve owned a 2005 XKR 4.2S for 7 years. Love it - and can never bring myself to trade it in. Equally amazing to glide around in as full gas! The cabin is a nice place to spend time in especially with the carbon fibre dash. But you have to stay on top of the maintenance (mechanical, underside and bodywork). Few cars look as good from so many angles.
Yep and the nice thing is with the XJS-derived underpinnings/somewhat old-school construction, that I've found it remarkably easy to work on compared to a lot of luxury tourers. The diff drain/fill plug is always a nightmare though.
I absolutely love my 98 Phoenix red XKR. It has this face lift and 20” Detroits. I still pinch myself after 5 years of ownership. Running costs not bad. Parts fairly reasonable and a “blast” to Cornwall from Oxfordshire averaged 23mpg (as per on board computer) or one tank of fuel. A lot of smile per mile. Worth every penny. Nice honest review btw.
I remember when I first saw a photo of the XK8 as a teenager, after I had last seen it from the perspective of n eight year old running around the Jaguar showroom: I was stunned by its beauty. We bought a 1998 XK8 with 20000 miles on the clock in 2013 - it has been a daily source of joy ever since. PS: I believe you captured the spirit of the car rather well.
Having just bought a 1998 XKR I found the review very fair and accurate but a little harsh about comments on the gearbox. I was lucky enough to own an E-Type back in the 70's and the XKR is a worthy and safer car to drive. Prices have bottomed out and they offer great motoring with no depreciation.
It's a personal choice, as an owner, I'm very happy with the xkr, the gearbox is fine, the motor is incredible, much more power than most if us will ever need. the handling is more than adequate. I took my son on a road trip to italy last summer, it's one of the most beautiful and comfortable cars you can drive. Average 28mpg, best was 33mpg with the air con off. I just love it. Always wanted an iso grifo but, the xkr is equal to the best and, so affordable.
What a superbly accurate and attractive video, I bought a 2004 XKR convertible in 2014 and can confirm JayEmms assessments in all respects, save that the gears are a bit better than he found, The great thing about the Ford switchgear is it seldom goes wrong, These cars whilst not as pretty as E Types are far better. Expect prices to rocket when the well kept secret of how much fun they are becomes widely known. Thanks for posting!
I've owned one of these for a few years as one of the weekend toys, and to be honest I have considered getting something else quite a few times, but I can't find anything comparable, it's lines are just sublime and it has been very reliable (just servicing and a suspension refresh).
One of the best reviews on any car I have ever watched on You Tube. Narration was outstanding, the information articulate, dry and accurate. A fair blend of detail for geeks and enough simple chat to keep viewers interested. Thanks. And I don't have one of these and nor do I want one, but you made it very, very tempting.
That sound of the V8 burbling past 😍 absolutely love this era of supercharged jags this and the XJR. The owners club really does make keeping one running much less daunting.
We owned a '96 XK8 (circa 2010) and daily drove it for 3 years, as well as a few decent trips in it. Absolutely loved it. Obviously the XKR is quicker etc, but both are great. Maintenance costs were on the high side but worth every cent. A great sense of occasion every drive.
Jay, superb video, and despite the obvious flaws, I recently succumbed and bought a 2000 XKR. As a 6'2", ex-rugby player, to say the interior is compact, is an understatement, but by god it is beautiful and along with my 986s (in white), I can't help but stop, turn back and look at it, every time I get out of it.
I have a year 2000 XKR in red with ivory hide interior, fully loaded 70000 miles lives outside. I've had it 11 years, IMO the colour is important in the looks. Just past MoT one advisory, l love the look of the year 2000 X100. I've got a great all weather cover, that's works well. Grossly underrated car.
My brother has a 2006 xkr convertible. This car is just fun to drive, you'll be up at 100 and not even feel it. The supercharger whine is great! Even better, when you can get the Ford parts, that is where it makes it barely affordable :)
I have been waiting a long time for this review. I have the same car. They are faster and quicker then most people would think. It's best to drive the car relaxed though unless you like loosing your license. You can turn the traction control off entirely which I do only in the dry, you are asking for trouble if you turn it off in the wet. The interior is the perfect size for me though, my mechanic moans when he has to get into it which I always find very amusing. It's what a GT really is, perfect for long distance driving. Automatic gearbox isn't perfect but it's smooth, with the J gate you can modulate the power much easier. A manual gearbox would have been really nice. It's one of the best looking cars ever made.
We are gentlemen of taste. They did make one with a manual, the XKR-R. Was a 4 litre tuned to 450bhp. I recall it on Top Gear. Sadly it never made it to production. As Clarkson said likely because it would walk all over the rival Aston and Ford couldn't have that.
@@sparky4878 Yea I have seen that video a few times. At the time Aston and Jaguar where in some sort of relationship and didn't want to hinder each others sales. You can buy a LSD for the XK8/R so it brings you a bit closer to the XKR-R. Small things like changing the exhaust will net you about 20hp for £500. An upper and lower smaller diameter supercahrger pulley will get you a little more power as well. Really the best way to make big power is to repalce the supercharger with a twin screw type. This will get you to around 500hp. I have seen a guy who is using a highly modified 4.4 AJV8 from a Range Rover putting out 650hp. Really I think the best value for money is to change the exhaust and fit the LSD. Everything else will just be a money sink.
@@rayreinhard1077 Yes but it's not overly expensive from what I have seen. Having the bonnet changed to have better ventilation is also a very good idea. Arden do one. To behonest though the car is plenty powerful enough as is.
I used to watch a lot of YT Car Videos but Jay, yours I like especially. Because you have a natural and spontanous way to comment and you drive many different sports cars, expensive and less ones
Classic beauty for sure 😍 especially the last 2005 models with the newer grill, side skirts and bumpers. And the 4.2 engine had all the issues of the 4.0 sorted.
@@terrificspokesman7416 Yes it is. But needs some attention on the chain tensioners and water pump 🙂 but when these parts have been upgraded it is as reliable as the 4.2 👍
I know this car is nothing special in today's car world, but there is just some unexplainable love I always had for it, and I still do 🥹 it's so unique, classy and rare (even here in Europe).
Yes the design really has aged well. There's many nice details in the lines that take a while to discover. Myself, I prefer the pre-facelift versions without much of the chrome details they added. It just looks even cleaner without those extras.
Great review, James. Just a bit of advice for those wishing to purchase one of the fabulous machines. You mentioned the Nikasil issues with the 4 litre engines. However, the pre 2002 4 litres had plastic timing chain tensioners which need to be replaced with the post 2002 metal versions from the later 4.2 V8. It is imperative all owners consider this upgrade, because serious engine damage can result if the plastic ones break. There will be a coming together of pistons & valves. Budget £800-1000 for a specialist to carry out the work. Parts are 200-300 quid. Also consider if a pre 2002 car changing the water pump for an upgraded one with metal impeller, instead of plastic. Also upgrade the plastic thermostat housing for a metal version. All parts available aftermarket from specialists such as the aforementioned Tom Lenthall. Other Jag specialists are of course available :-)
To clarify: were the 2002 4-litre ones OK (metal tensioners etc) or do you really mean post-2002 ie 2003? Sorry if this sounds picky but I’ve been eyeing up a 2002 4 litre…
Hi Arnold, you would need to purchase a 4.2 litre car to avoid any issues with the timing chain tensioners. They introduced the 4.2 in 2002. So yes, as long as it's a 4.2 you'll be ok. Thanks.
Driving a 2005 XJ Super V8 since 150.000 mls I can highly recommend these cars. Not much trouble, much better than its reputation and every drive is a delightful experience.
Seen one of these in front of the hotel I was staying at last year in Thessaloniky... it is worth buying any day of the year! Gorgeous from any angle, in any typeof weather!
That's one of the most gorgeous cars of all time. One day I will own one and park it proudly beside my lovely X351 Jaguar XJ. Another classic that you deride in your films.
My dream two-car garage is a black XKR Coupe and a black XJR from the same time. I've wanted this set since I was in high school. And I still do. In fact, I would still take it over the last and most recent versions. Sadly, for some reason, Jaguar decided to kill off both of these classic ranges and haven't even bothered to replace them with anything.
I went with Jag to Oulton Park back in 2005? or so and drove the supercharged around, was taught to slide it and had so much fun. One of my happiest days. They were quite well balanced cars imo and nice to drive.
The ZF box 'learns' your driving style and adapts accordingly. You cant drive it loads like a granny then just push the Sport button and expect it to perform like Satan instantly, all the time. As an owner of a 03 XKR for 9 years, I'm so glad I have one and will not be selling it. Nice review btw.
In standard spec and at full chat, that Eaton M112 Supercharger spins 13000rpm and compresses 428 Litres of air into the V8 at 13psi every second (That's more volume than 2 full-size Barrels per second).
@@paulcooper7178 Yes and no. The Rover 75 V8 has a four speed automatic gearbox instead of the five speed manual. It was designed much more as a luxury cruiser instead of a sports saloon. But yeah I know that there are many other cars to review and it may be "too similar" to warrant a review in the near future. Would be nice though.
I've had a 97 XK8 4.0L for 15 years. Black, lowered and on 20in rims. Toured all over Europe comfortably many times. Never let me down and still on its original nikasil engine. I have others Inc an E Type but I'll never sell this one.
It's nice to watch a review that covers all bases and relates to daily driving. To many UA-cam channels (Car Wow) are hung up on peak BHP / 0-100 times etc. Without giving an insight on day to day driving along normal, pot marked, damp British roads. An 800bhp M5 , weighing 2 tonnes, costing a fortune to run and own and only being able to use 20% of its potential on British roads . Pointless. Its nothing more than a cock and wealth measure.
@@mihai-danut6955 A lot of people hate and slate the M52 728i, and swear by and would want to sleep with a 740i, may I ask you, when you drive yours, is it as slow as all these people on facebook groups and general people make out to be? Or is it slow? What is it like?
We took the old head unit out last year and with a bit of fiddling fitted an up to date android Bluetooth unit and plumbed it into the very good Harmon Cardon amp and speakers
I owned an S Type R for 2 years a few years back. The engine and gearbox are the same as in this XKR. I never felt that the gearbox wasn’t a good fit for the car. They are also surprisingly good on the MPG’s if driven with a bit of restraint.
@@davidstuart4915 That's not what I said. I don't care about what it has, I care about the difficulty in updating it to something from this century. I mostly care about the auto box, I used to love Clio R.S's. They brought out the new ones as auto only and lost a customer. @SuperEjep Do they make blanking plates that look any good? @Julian adams I've no doubt they fit the character of the car, I just really don't like auto's tbh.
My 2005 XKR has the factory navigation system, which I was able to convert to an Apple CarPlay-type system with the video screen mirroring the screen of my iPhone. All audio is streamed through the stereo system via Bluetooth connection; I also have hands-free phone, an automatic rear-view backup camera, and a multi-gauge display with oil pressure, supercharger boost, voltage, coolant temp, and clock. www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-x100-17/sat-nav-conversion-carplay-multi-gauge-display-how-200834/
Amazing!!!! The XK8 and the XKR is my dream car!! I love your opinions on this car. When I’m older I may get a 1999 Jaguar XKR convertible with British racing green.
NO XK8 with ZF auto 5 speed as they break. XK8 later with ZF auto 6 is what you want, reliable and downshift speed is the beginning of good automatic response
I always loved the looks of the XKR. Classy but sporty. Had a neighbor Years ago that had one with a tastefully fabricated hood scoop with some work done to the motor/exhaust/drivetrain. It was good at setting off car alarms.
It's on of those cars that you have look back to when you walk away from it ... I love mine. Just makes me smile every time I drive it. Such a low roof line and high sills. Really cat like. And if you give it some poke it will move for sure. Had a hard time following my friend's TVR Tamora but then it's a GT, isn't it? Also, mine has the lowered Arden suspension (actually H&R springs) which really makes it look perfect. Also, don't discount the 4.0 litre cars: The 5 G-Tronic by Mercedes is pretty much rock solid and 0-60 times are not really slower. So, if you ever thought about acquiring an X100 XKR, just do it :-)
Echo what you relayed, mine a base 4.0 '01 convertible w/71k now. Be informed, have an omg reserve, and recall it is: a GT returning 27mpg on motorways. The ZF 5HP-24 is stout, the brakes over-servoed but are strong, up to the task. Just do it!
I own the X150 XKR and love it, however I would still buy the XK8 4.2 S model shown as the body shape on both cars is stunning. These cars are climbing in value and the announcement from Jaguar of an all electric production from 2025, these cars are the last of their kind.
Precisely why you and the missus need an XK8! One maybe all will cherish the special time as a twosome: the short trips to the pitch, bonding travel and Sunday morning early drive for coffee. Of all the replies, You present the most compelling 'why...' (I've a 2001 Carnival red conv-never sell it) Great review and very accurate!
I have had a drive in an old XK8 and what the owner told me, was to avoid actually sitting straight on those seats and to slouch a bit. I first ignored that comment and I remember that after a drive of just about twenty or so minutes, my bottocks were sore and my thighs felt a bit stiff, apparently this is because the ergonomics of the seats actually did not align properly, so sitting straight was not good for longer drives.
That test drive with the cheap Jag, all of the suspension would've been completely knackered. That's why they're so cheap, they need a good £5k spending on them to revive them from the penny pinching previous owner at that price range. And the other thing, and I really cannot stress this enough. Those Pirelli P Zeros are the scariest tyres I have ever used. In the wet it literally feels like you're going to die. And I mean really proper panic attack inducing stuff. After a few trips at night in the rain on those tyres I was almost put off the car. Anyway I then downgraded to the 18" wheels from the 20", and got some nice Dunlop SP Sport, 255 width and I think about 35 profile, and honestly the difference is night and day. And I will never ever buy another Pirelli tyre for any other car ever again.
Last year I got all the bushings in the front replaced on my '98 XKR, along with new shock absorbers and their top mountings. In total around €2200. The shock absorbers weren't cheap (CATS)... ;( But it made a big difference in ride quality. Also got new front tyres after the job was done, the old tyres were very old and worn. Got a set of Goodyear Eagle F1, replaced the rear tyres the previous year with the same make and model. Quite happy with them so far. But have really only driven the car in dry weather last year so can't comment on how they behave in the wet. I've got the original 18" rims and slightly lowered springs btw.
Totally agree with you on the Pirelli tyres, I had them on a Cayenne Turbo and the first sign of rain and it became hugely entertaining...four wheel drifting at virtually any speed around even the slightest bend, I also had them on my CLS, they were nearly new when I bought it and replacement rubber was too expensive to quite justify throwing them away, it was actually cheaper to fit an LSD, when I changed the tyres to Contis the LSD suddenly had a lot less work to do! I don't know why Pirelli tyres are given credence, utter rubbish in my experience...
My ‘03 XKR is my pride and joy, such a beautiful body shape. One of the last “classically” styled production cars. These benefit from an ECU flash, high quality synthetic oils (I use Amsoil), downsized supercharger pulleys (larger crank pulley too) and methanol. I’m pushing nearly 480 whp on a warm humid day. More is available with a twin screw supercharger. There’s an old video if anyone is interested on my channel.
Hey Jay, I understand your frustration with the J - shifter but this is the only way to give this beauty an Umpf, when you want some sort of dynamic performance. I own X308 and on a roads like this is fun to put it in 2 and push harder. Yes, it is not a stick-shift but when used properly the J-shifter gives tons of pleasure.
Looks to be the same colour as mine, midnight black, but has a contrast interior (red and black) that I love and sitting on original 20s. I do prefer the interior having the three dials (clock, volts and oil temp) against the digital screen. They certainly do have presence on the road, massive car with a tiny cabin. Sound incredible with the V8 roar and supercharger scream. Great for fun on an A-road or a long comfy drive, but for enjoying the twisty stuff then I hop into something else.
Had an 03 XLR convertible, cream leather in Seafrost colour. Simply stunning colour especially as I was in Southern. Spain. Real head turner in Seafrost. It had a couple of mods including cherry poppers in the exhaust. Tunnels WERE FUN. Very few probs and even the Ford Galaxy bin parts were tolerable (but also had an 05 Vanquish and even that had Ford bin parts).
I am looking at one similar to this - convertible in California…. (owner passed away recently) and family would like to “get rid of the cat”. Thank you for your review…. Helps a lot with decision if I need to put an effort to acquire it… I like your honest discriminating opinion. Want to view more of your videos. Cheers!!!
I have both an X100 XKR and an X150 5.0L XKR. I love the looks of my X100 because of its obvious heritage to the E-type. HOWEVER, there is simply no comparison to the X150. Besides the obvious power differences 400 vs. 510hp, the ride, the handling, the comfort, the ability to use the power in the X150 are simply incomparable, the X150 is so far superior. The X100 at speed on a twisty road is terrifying, the X150 is confidence inspiring and enjoyable. Ever since I bought my X150, I just can't stand driving my X100 as beautiful as it is. And the 5.0L engine besides being a monster, is supremely reliable (unlike my X100), as I have over 182,000 miles on my 2010 with very few problems.
I think the XKR is one of the best looking cars ever conceived and I am currently drooling just looking at it. Shame the interior doesn't live up to the lovely external styling.
How about doing a run of Jags kinda like the run of Porsches? I know you've done the S-Type R, an XJ8 and and XJR 6, but I'd love to see the 8 cylinder XJR, the V12 XJS (I think the non-convertable early 90s versions look the best and I think they're one of the best looking cars ever produced) and I'd even love to see the much maligned X-Type. I also like to see the more "attainable" cars sometimes, maybe like the 4.2 version of the S-Type or even the 6 cylinder would be cool.
A normally aspirated XK8 is a far better buy than the XKR. Why? The additional performance of the XKR doesn't actually add very much to the drive or experience. The XK8 is a GT, not an out and out sports car. The XKR is prone to blowing head gaskets, and the brakes are very expensive to replace as well. 20 inch wheels degrade the ride quality- which undermines the GT nature of the car. 18 inch wheels provide a significantly better ride. XKR- When more is LESS.
Thank you for this. You've helped me make my decision to avoid the XKR and just get the XK8. Also as the XKRs age they become inexpensive and into the hands of folks who tend to abuse them. The XK8 is also quite a bit more discreet.
Great review! Covered the pros and cons without any bias - an honest review/assessment by someone who - by their own admission - has a soft-spot for this marque/model, but didn’t just blindly big them up or let their disappointments turn them against the car. I’m just worried now - a 4.2 XKR x100 is my dream motor, but I didn’t think height was an issue - I’m 6’0 and seeing how you look the driver’s seat made me anxious... 😳
I have an 2005 model XK8 Coupe as well. No XKR, because I can drive mine with 10.2 liters gasoline. My Jag has the three round instruments in the middle. It was an option to choose a GPS system. I searched especially for one without a GPS, because it looks so much better and you can't get uptades for the old GPS now. So, the cars without GPS are quite more seldom.
I always think the key to buying Jaguars of this, and any other vintage, is to check the bodywork for rust; this sounds fine, but once bodywork panels become unavailable it can be a hugely expensive exercise to replace them.

What risk. No risk. If it breaks you still get to look at it.
Very derp statement

The best looking jag ever .
They should remake this with today’s technology
I have a 1999 XKR, which I have owned for twenty years. I love it. It is cheap to run, reliable to a fault, a pleasure to drive and just nice to look at in the garage. I will never sell it.
David I’m looking to buy a 1999 xkr supercharger. It’s had 3 previous owners 77 k and a good decent history file . Looks superb but I haven’t a clue about cars . Shall I get the rac to look over it . I’m not in a good financial position I won’t be able to afford huge repair costs if a get a dud.. any advice
@@cs2709 I find the RAC a bit "generic". Where abouts is the car exactly?
@@cs2709 I know this is late but I have 155k miles on mine and it still runs great.
Useful info`. Thanks.
I swear this car could launch today and it wouldn't look out of place. It has aged far better than the still attractive and desirable X150.
These are my favorite Jaguar design after the e-type. Such an elagant timeless shape
PS:
I believe you captured the spirit of the car rather well.
This is my XKR Convertible had it 7 years now, I will.drive it till the wheels fall off. Gets better every year all rust sorted no other fault.
“Ooo blimey fund” - loved that phrase James ! 😂
Same here. Just gonna get the front end done next mot in a couple of months. Otherwise fabulous.
From GBP75k Cayman GTS 4.0 into a GBP10k hooptie XKR. The diversity is uncanny. Happy to be a subscriber here, James.
Thanks - I love to mix it up! Keeps me grounded
@@Punisher9419 If you install a more powerful supercharger, you also need a heavier-duty supercharger cooler.
@@rayreinhard1077 Yes but it's not overly expensive from what I have seen. Having the bonnet changed to have better ventilation is also a very good idea. Arden do one. To behonest though the car is plenty powerful enough as is.
Faster and quicker, eh? The difference is....?
I used to watch a lot of YT Car Videos but Jay, yours I like especially. Because you have a natural and spontanous way to comment and you drive many different sports cars, expensive and less ones
Classic beauty for sure 😍 especially the last 2005 models with the newer grill, side skirts and bumpers. And the 4.2 engine had all the issues of the 4.0 sorted.
The 4.0 was still quite reliable
@@terrificspokesman7416 Yes it is. But needs some attention on the chain tensioners and water pump 🙂 but when these parts have been upgraded it is as reliable as the 4.2 👍
@@sbuskov yep but all those Jaguar AJV8s like the 3.2,4.0,4.2,4.4 and 5.0 are reliable if you take care of it that's true of any JLR product
I know this car is nothing special in today's car world, but there is just some unexplainable love I always had for it, and I still do 🥹 it's so unique, classy and rare (even here in Europe).
Thanks!
The side profile is spot on with this car. I've never been a fan of the front / rear though. I'd still have one.
Yes the design really has aged well. There's many nice details in the lines that take a while to discover. Myself, I prefer the pre-facelift versions without much of the chrome details they added. It just looks even cleaner without those extras.
I ❤ the first XKR's. A thing of beauty.
Thanks.
@@zoerandall-rea4459 Thank you!
Don't know where 800 for tensioners came from make that £2000
Great review Jay. You just pushed the used prices up by at least a grand.
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Driving a 2005 XJ Super V8 since 150.000 mls I can highly recommend these cars. Not much trouble, much better than its reputation and every drive is a delightful experience.
This and the DB7 are both beautiful cars of their era.
I love my XK8, I never get tired of it. I hope it lasts a long time!
I just love the design of this generation XK coupe. It aged extremely well.
Nice Video !
The J-Gate is perfect for using , when U go slow steep Downhill.

Happy to see this car being reviewed, as you say good looks and affordable, theses have been on my radar for awhile
I had this one (also in black, but with cream leather) and loved it. I'm 6ft 2" and didn't find it at all cramped.
Always loved this generation XK.
It's just such a beautiful car.
Awwww maaannn, now i have to look up the classifieds again. I just sold a car.......
Love the bargain videos where you gives us your unique perspective of these less mainstream classics.
One of the best looking cars ever.
I'm really digging Jay's style of review👍 pretty straight forward
I went with Jag to Oulton Park back in 2005? or so and drove the supercharged around, was taught to slide it and had so much fun. One of my happiest days.
They were quite well balanced cars imo and nice to drive.
Great video, like the mention of the jaguar enthusiasts club who can give loads of advice on these cars
Been waiting for this! Thinking of buying this next or the Rover 75 V8 (would be cool to see you review that). Love the content!

Well to be fair it's a zt260 with a supercharger.
The XKR is still one of the most beautiful cars I have ever seen.
I've had a 97 XK8 4.0L for 15 years. Black, lowered and on 20in rims. Toured all over Europe comfortably many times. Never let me down and still on its original nikasil engine. I have others Inc an E Type but I'll never sell this one.
Still an amazing looking car, incredibly pretty in this R guise
It's nice to watch a review that covers all bases and relates to daily driving. To many UA-cam channels (Car Wow) are hung up on peak BHP / 0-100 times etc. Without giving an insight on day to day driving along normal, pot marked, damp British roads. An 800bhp M5 , weighing 2 tonnes, costing a fortune to run and own and only being able to use 20% of its potential on British roads . Pointless. Its nothing more than a cock and wealth measure.
Perfect idea. This is why i drive E38 with 2.8 engine,it's too enough for this roads.I wish to own 4.0 V8 but where the hell to enjoy so many bhp?👍🤝

I saw one just yesterday, and really loved the looks!
Drop dead gorgeous, but that auto and the ancient hard to modernise stereo setup puts me off.
..the stereo puts u off buying an XJR??
Amazing!!!! The XK8 and the XKR is my dream car!! I love your opinions on this car. When I’m older I may get a 1999 Jaguar XKR convertible with British racing green.
You might also check out "Jaguar Racing Green" which is like a metallic (sparkling) version of BRG. I have it on my 2005 XKR and it looks great!
The 2nd best car I ever owned, a dream to drive, fantastic looks. Absolutely horrendous maintenance costs. Now on to my perfect car, the f-type.
Yep, she’s a thing of beauty, also sounds beautiful. I would definitely buy one tomorrow if I didn’t have 5 kids.
You have a great knack for teaching and entertaining in your narration. Great video.
Absolutely great car with perfect 👌 design . I always have a crush on this Jag type and also the XJ8 from the same era
I like the '07-'09 models better, which is why I bought an '09 XKR Portfolio.
The Mk1 XK8 is a genuine beauty. One of these as a Coupe in Antigua blue, with a Cream leather interior is something I want to own before I die.
Agree. Using the gate with the Z 6 speed trans brings out the best in my 05.
This is a particularly nice example. Thanks for showing us round it 👍🏼
I recently bought an 09 XKR and I love it. More mature version of a sporty gt. And oh so fun to look at.
I love the shape they had at this time. My favourite Bond car was Pierce Brosnan's XKR.
Helps a lot with decision if I need to put an effort to acquire it…
I like your honest discriminating opinion.
Think these have aged really really well, nice to see the owner uses it properly - good mileage on it and Austrian road tax too
I think the XKR is one of the best looking cars ever conceived and I am currently drooling just looking at it.
I have done an XJR V8, and just the other day filmed an XJS V12. This weekend two more Jag films too :)
It's gonna be a squeeze... depends on your leg:torso ratio
My friend's dad had one. He was a CEO. :)
However, even a bricklayer or shop assistant can also have one to😉
Beautiful looking car.. always loved the look's of these.
I always think the key to buying Jaguars of this, and any other vintage, is to check the bodywork for rust; this sounds fine, but once bodywork panels become unavailable it can be a hugely expensive exercise to replace them.
A smaller supercharger pully wheel and you can have 420hp without any drama. Lovely cars and under valued only because they sold so many.
Dad’s had an 05 XKR convertible, Zircon blue exterior, tan and mahogany interior and a tan top. He will never part with it.
I put Conti DWS 06 tires on my 2011 XK... much better in low/cold temps than most of the "sticky" tires available for these cars.
I have them on my 2005 XKR, too.
Have Contis' 18" on my 4.0 conv. The DWS on my 1-series, so it's Conti soon again.
