Thanks again James, appreciate the reference to Holdens by the way, it's sad we no longer produce Holdens in Australia but I still like to see the older ones being preserved and restored. I was out for a drive in my XKR again today and saw a '74 HQ Holden station wagon in traffic, looking good in vibrant and punchy Barbados Green - the driver and I had a chat at the lights and his young bloke said, '..Dad, he's in a jaguar, we're in a lion...' Nice little moment, my first car was a white '72 HQ Holden wagon with a 202' six and 'three on the tree' column shift manual, cost me $200 at the auctions. Yep, fond memories there!
I'm glad you mentioned the outdated tyres James. I've never owned a Jaaag, nor has anyone I'm related to, but... no matter what brand the fast car, fitting decent modern rubber wear has to be an essential component in any real road test, if only because the car has one less significant excuse for behaving badly.
Tyres really have a use-by date of 6-8 years depending on the conditions they are in - then the rubber will start to break down and all sorts of stuff can start to go wrong This is why they stamp the manufacturing week and year on the side of the tyre. 10 years on a car with this much power - that'd be terrifying IMO.

Little bit of inside industry information I’ve got regarding the XKR-S. The front uprights (or knuckles depending on you geography location) are quite special. There were designed 1 junction further south down the M40 from Gaydon just off the motorway by a company most famous for blue Japanese rally cars. They are CNC machined from large round billets about 250mm in diameter as the round billets maintain a more thorough heat treat the square stock apparently. There’s at least 75 pairs were manufactured this way at not an insignificant cost. I’m not sure how many XKR-S were made in total or if they switched eventually to a forged version, but some for sure have some very bling uprights that’s for sure!
A total of 200 XKR-S were made, 50 in RHD, 150 in LHD and none made for the US market. The XKR-S GT a total of 45 made world wide and only 10 made for the UK market… so a very rare car indeed.
"and an attitude that would grab the attention of even a Holden fan" As a New Zealander, this is the funniest thing I have heard all year. Absolutely on the money.
I think you’ve now reviewed more XKR variants (X100’s and X150’s) than any other UA-camr James. Another great review of these massively underrated GT cars. Personally, I prefer the clean lines on the standard XKR and if you want to save yourself a bucket of change vs a S or a GT, as I did with my standard 2010 Speed Pack variant, I got the engine and gearbox remapped to unleash this wonderful V8. DMS Automotive in Southampton did mine (I’ve no vested interest). There is a photo on Google Maps of my Kyanite Blue one on their rolling road. For less than the price of a set of new tyres, I’ve got more grunt than an XKR-S GT, increased clamping pressures in the gearbox to take the increased torque and super smooth gear changes. Yes it doesn’t have the suspension upgrades I grant an S S-GT, but don’t skimp on tyres on these cars, drive it progressively but with respect and they are fine. Just enjoy the overall experience. It’s what these cars are all about. They are just fantastic VFM, have buckets of soul and make you feel alive. They’ll always make you smile when you open the garage door too. Very pretty cars with a nod to the E-type with that front end. So, when are you buying one James; you know it makes sense?!
I do like these. Back in 2014 we wanted a replacement car and there was a red XKR-S same as this one at the dealer we really liked. There was no way we could fit our toddler-aged children with child seats in the back though which ended that idea. Resigning to sensibility and needing a proper family car, my wife test drove a diesel XF without me and reported back "nice car, shame about the engine" and liked the familiarity with the 3.0 V6 S-Type we had. At that moment, standing outside on the forecourt with a salesman who was smiling but clearly thinking we'd wasted his time, I remembered the XFR-S existed which seemed like the ideal compromise - the XKR-S engine and front uprights, F-Type steering rack and gearbox, French Racing Blue, big spoiler, offensive to walnut polishers on the Jaguarforum and with 4 doors and proper back seats for the kids. They didn't have one in Perth, so the dealer arranged to have Edinburgh's French Racing Blue demonstrator sent over a weekend or so later. He gave it to us all day. We loved it. We placed our order when I got back. Shortly after, we had a call saying Jaguar had changed the specs for the 2015MY and French Racing Blue was no longer available. He gave us a cracking deal on the demonstrator with 1200 miles on the clock. I was concerned for a moment that I'd given that car a good thrashing, but then realised that was what I was going to do to the new one anyway, so was quite happy getting the ex-demo for £65k. I would like an XKR-S, but am no longer making money like I was then - sigh.

Being a jag technician, the XK R is the only car that gives me a twitchy bum hole. It will catch you out when you least expect it. The ftype on the other hand is a bit more forgiving especially the later ones with AWD
This gen, or the X100? Any particular reason? My assumption would be the auto trans, i.e. shifting/torque converter disengaging when you don't know its going to happen, and that radically changing the power/torque to the back wheels, and the ensuing loss of traction. Also, what kind of diffs do these cars have? Mostly used as a sitting room on wheels/ fast highway cruiser/GT car so I wonder how they were really set up.
A quick google suggests that the XK8 and XKR did not have limited slip diffs so I am assuming they are open diffs so can definitely see why they would be sketchy when losing grip; I assume they simply tried to prevent this with some rather blunt traction control. Got an LSD in my mx-5, and driven open diff'd mx-5s too, difference is definitely noticed at the extremes of grip which I assume can be reached more easily with 400bhp delivered through an unpredictable auto box, the extra weight would have an impact too I imagine. Would love your view/info on this as a jag tech!
@@iainbagnall4825 The 5 litre supercharged cars have an electronic LSD, it was even mentioned in the video. Put decent, modern tyres on these cars and they handle very predictably.

And my reason for being interested in the X100 is that is the one that is an affordable AF bargain right now which can actually be found for sale and I am shopping for a good one :D.
@@iainbagnall4825 I'm no Jag tech but I own a 4.0 X100 XKR (and an MX5 coincidentally enough). You've more or less figured out the gist of it yourself, the open diff makes it super easy to spin up the inside wheel in a corner and the way this is "managed" is with an extremely sensitive traction control system that loves to cut in too early. It's so sensitive that the shunt of the torque converter you mentioned before can set it off when flooring it from a low cruising speed. Turn this off and you can wring a bit more out of it but at the expense of said super easy wheelspin especially in the damp. That said I've never actually had the arse end kick out on me unpredictably, it seems to sort of bog down and wobble a little and not much more than that. That could be because of decent tyres (regular PS4, can't get the 4S in 18") or simply because I lift my foot as soon as I feel it happening. An LSD is definitely on the future shopping list because it desperately needs one.
Last Jag's series on this channel ..big thumbs UP. I have been in France recently with my XFR Sportbrake and as in UK it is modest car, on the continent you get desirable looks and comments.
Definitely French Blue. Love that colour, oh and what a beast this car is, you have got to love a fast Jag. So that's two brilliant videos over the weekend, well done Sir!!
I really appreciate your Jag reviews. Your reviews helped me decide to purchase my 2007 XKR and I absolutely love it! Indigo Blue, by the way (no grey Jag for me either), and I have brand new Michelin PS4S tires on it too. The 6-year-old AS3’s were definitely holding it back.
I too just recently purchased an 07 XKR coupe with rock hard AS3's on it, those had to go. What an awesome car for the $$. Still turns heads. Mine is a powder metallic blue.
The XKRS is just a little wrong to me. I feel like the XK lines and body is extremely elegant and doesnt suit the wings, lips and gaps present on these. It's a bit of a clash of design philosophy. If it had wider haunches I think that would bring it all together. The XKR75 is the perfect balance to me. The slightly more aggressive front blends better with the style of the car, sideskirts and rear lip are perfect IMO. The powertrain though, is immense.
Michelin 4Ss are totally overwhelmed by Jags RWD SC 5.0L, as are Cup 2s. R888Rs are the only street tire with usable bite, but still spin thru 5th and can go sideways above 120 mph.
It's a beautiful car - but maybe this is just me - it looks very much like a JZA80 Supra - particularly the side profile and the rear - kinda like a flip-around from the 70's where the Japanese were copying the British...
looks good but I feel it looks a bit "JDM", but I most say I'm rapidly going of the loud exhaust cars, they kinda remind me of the late 90's Millennium era.
My wife did the same in 2014 traded her Porche Panamera 4.8 in for a new XK Dynamic R. in the same colour. Breath taking performance and drop dead looks. In every way a better Aston Martin
Before buying my XKR-S, I sold myself on the idea of needing to modify the exhaust to get the most out of the V8. I can happily say, a year down the line… I haven’t changed a thing and the sound, still to this day, is fantastic! The only thing I genuinely wish for is that supercharger wine you get in the project 8. That’s be the icing on the already brilliant cake.
Love my 2012 FRB XKR-S. I added a drop-in tune and pulley kit to bump it to 585 fwhp 528 fwtq. I needed to go to Toyo R888 tires to keep it on the road lol. By far, my favorite European car I've ever owned. I highly recommend buying one.
Love this and the XKR75 review. In the family we have the other brother to these... An XK Dynamic R It has the same exhaust, suspension, gearbox and seats as the R-S, but with regular facelift "Speed and Dynamic pack" bodywork. Not as aggressive as the R-S, but a little nicer than the 75 Officially it was only given the standard 503bhp of the regular production XKR, but I've heard it said that was a conservative estimate. The Dynamic R was one of two "run out" models at the end of the line. I'm lucky enough to get to drive one fairly regularly, and the combo of Dynamic mode, S, manual changes and that exhaust are utterly intoxicating.
I'm going to miss the Jaguar videos when it's over. Jaguar tops my list of most loved brands , cars and designs. I had to wait until my mid 40's before I truly appreciate the beauty of Jaguar cars. It's a paradox. I'm certain had Jaguar basked in success like it's German counterparts, they would be producing ugly cars, very much like it's German counterparts, or worse, filling every market requirement with a bespoke model. Part of the allure is it's rarity !
I recently just sold my 2014 French racing blue jaguar XKRS-You’ll probably see it for sale At a jaguar dealership in Ventura California. The car was absolutely gorgeous absolutely amazing the only complaint was the automatic transmission was very outdated and slow based upon the super powerful engine
Love those in French Racing Blue. Would definitely be on my bucket list if I hadn't found 07 Botanical Green XKR with Vortex exhaust that gives a similar deep throaty roar. Front of the pre-facelift XKR looks better than the XKR-S in my opinion. Great GT cars. Controversial here, I wish they had offered it with the 3.0 V6 diesel. Would make long road trips easier.
Great video, front end looks were a little messy in the XKR-S for me (too many ports and bits bolted on), but they were trying to shake the old man image as you mentioned and I think the design team have evolved the later Jags into things of beauty. That old man image is well and truly shaken off if Le Mans is anything to go by... Just come back from a road trip down to Le Mans 24hr, and those lads in Europe love their cars...and Jags. Its a shame Jag don't have a footprint at the race bar an F-Pace stand considering it's rich history with the race. I think I might have broken the limiter from all the revving the festival crowd wanted to here from my F-Type. We had an Audi R8 and Merc convoy, epic weather and lots of petrol stops. Happy days.
Wonderful car, I dream of the day my pockets are deep enough to own one of these and use it as a GT for trips away. Always had a soft spot for the XK, and this is a real corker!
XKR-S dangerous at limit; GREAT REVIEW though. XKR-S was repeatedly noted as seemingly trying to kill its driver by magazines who tested it thoroughly. Now at these decent prices, a good value. However, Sport Seats w Dynamic pack = not comfy enough beyond 2 hours. Within 2-3 years after XKR-S, the market exploded with cars featuring this level of power and many of those also could only put it down in straight line. This was the end of getting a car because it was fast as many were fast. Well behaved or enjoyable in an all around fashion became the substantial differentiator. Aston’s and Maseratis more beautiful but supercharged Jags won respective competitions with those and can be more readily serviced. Nice review Jay!
Trust James to get up early on a Sunday morning! Good lad. My XK8 is languishing in the garage with a “security” code fault so I believe not delivering petrol. Should have forked out more for a X150 XK but love the interior of the older XK8. And the noise!
Excellent reviews as always James! Regarding the looks - I actually do prefer the looks of this facelifted model over the previous iterations, HOWEVER (I had to), the looks of the R-S are indeed too over the top. The standard models are much prettier.
Great car and great video. You heve driven many XK’s so you are the best person to ask which one is the best. In my opinion XKRS have lost something special and some elegance. But I am wondering if there is big difference between XK Dynamic R and XKR 75 (suspension, exhaust, driving etc.) Which one would you choose?
Great review and 100% the tyres were the issue. My XKR has around 100bhp more than the XKR-S and just grips and goes with Michelin Pilot 4s's. In standard tune it was scary in the wet with the factory spec Dunlops.
I saw one like the white model you showed that seemed to have been to Halfords (perhaps that very car given their rarity) im not exagerating to say it sounded like a spitfire taking off, absolutely stunning sound that could almost make up for the imo rather over the top bodykit!
If Jaguar wanted to make money they should have produced the C-X75. Such a beautiful sports car that imo a large number of people would have ordered. Plus it was mid engined and there hasn't been a mid engined Jag since the XJ220
Great review James. I think your point on tyres was valid. I drive this car on PZero's - which tyre would you say is the very best to to fit to my xkrs?
Roger, I am the owner of The XKR 75 that James referenced in this review of The XKR S. I will try to put any bias aside in adding my comments. The S is a truly great great car and in The Italian racing Red the only Jag I would contemplate owning if I was to change from my 75. BUT I am not so keen on the rear spoiler and added horizontal front of bonnet vents which I feel spoil the flow lines of the front and rear of the car. According to Nigel Thorley’s 2018 publication Jaguar XK/XKR. On colour The S was only ever available in White, British Racing Green, Black, Grey, Italian Racing Red, French Blue. Of these I would like to see it in The Racing Green but never have. Oh and for me not with Black wheels.
My father has the dynamic R in the same colour as the 75 you tested. Great cars. Dynamic R is a good balance of the classic looks with all the xkr chassis mods
Great video as always. Slightly biased as I own a late xfr. Absolutely love what jag were doing at this time. Please if anyone out there can kindly lend james their super rare xfrs sportbrake to review, it would be appreciated.
Wonderful video James - just one thing, don’t think you can get Jagdroid for the X150 series, the system is compatible with X350 and some others but as far as I am aware, not this one? Unless someone tells me otherwise! Love the channel.
I think the visuals suit the design brief, it's supposed to be the larriest version of the XKR so the aggressive vents and race car styling are in keeping. Personally I prefer the more subtle versions but if you're going to buy the loud, shouty version then the styling is probably what you want
I cannot stress enough that the XK series of cars are massively dependent on great tyres. These run like the difference between night & day with fresh tyres. You’d think the geometry is out but no…just tyres. I’ve had a few now and sold my last XK60 last year. Just looking now and at a French racing blue GTRS.
I disagree that Jaguar had the bad boy image from the X150's. The earlier XJ's always had a bad boy image esspecially when all blacked out. Same with the X100 XKR's which always looked very cool.
I quite liked the front end, stood out from the older model. I'd be happy with either. I was put off by the XK due to the humungous steering wheel, I know you get used to them similar to putting a larger coffee table in your living room :) But, as I ended up with the F-Type R, I have to say that it's the best but not as limited. Nice job on the Jag theme Jay!
Italian racing red I believe it’s called. I looked at a regular XK recently in that colour. I’m sure same as Land rovers Firenze red but lovely regardless. Sadly car was too much for my budget and replacing school run car is next up
I’ve owned two of these cars and they were both brilliant, had an Italian racing red one like this one and one in French racing blue. Absolute widow makers, ran Michelin Cup2’s on both and uprated brake pads from Carbotech. Both cars nearly killed me, well i say that I nearly killed myself in them 🤦🏻♂️
The only Jag i have ever owned was the infamous but not great X-Type 4WD Estate, it rattled it's way down the road to the next petrol station, i can only describe it as a disaster. It was replaced very quickly by a BMW 3 series touring, ohh what a difference, no more rattles and sensible fuel economy and far superior bulid quality. To me Jaguar have made some very desirable cars, but quality and reliability has been sadly lacking in far too many. In todays world of ever increasing petrol prices, they are not a daily driver, still desirable if you can afford to run one as a weekend car.
Loving the amount of Jag’s on the channel lately 😁

The slightly more aggressive front blends better with the style of the car, sideskirts and rear lip are perfect IMO. The powertrain though, is immense.
I prefer the ducktail spoiler you get on speed pack I have early 2007 xkr and would love to source one
I recently traded in my 5.0 XK and all these videos are really giving me seller's remorse. Thanks JayEmm ;)
Sorry!
Was just looking at this model. You're reading my mind. Thank you for this one James. Right on time.
Looks awesome, but could never be considered beautiful as so many Jags are in my opinion! What a beast!
The front splitter does look grumpy... But not in an angry Jaaag kinda way, more like Clarkson said "like seaside landlady" ☹️
Very nice jag. This generation does look fun. Great colour. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Michelin 4Ss are totally overwhelmed by Jags RWD SC 5.0L, as are Cup 2s. R888Rs are the only street tire with usable bite, but still spin thru 5th and can go sideways above 120 mph.
Absolutely beautiful car, and as always a fantastic review. Keep the jaguar content coming!!
Love the lines of the XK - such a beautiful car. Add the performance and this one is definitely a win. Great vid, James!
It's a beautiful car - but maybe this is just me - it looks very much like a JZA80 Supra - particularly the side profile and the rear - kinda like a flip-around from the 70's where the Japanese were copying the British...
Thanks for sharing this Car with us James. Love your Jag content.
My absolute dream car! Thanks for finally having one of these on the channel great video like always
looks good but I feel it looks a bit "JDM", but I most say I'm rapidly going of the loud exhaust cars, they kinda remind me of the late 90's Millennium era.
I think that about it, a bit too....Z, if you get me?
@@Steve-K.G. there is a solid hint of that in the front end treatment. As a Fair Lady might say!
I don't think I have seen an XK in that color before. It's very nice!
My wife did the same in 2014 traded her Porche Panamera 4.8 in for a new XK Dynamic R. in the same colour. Breath taking performance and drop dead looks. In every way a better Aston Martin
Great video as always! I prefer the pre-face lift cars, the frontend styling is a little too fussy for me, but still a lovely looking car.
In the mainland, the Jag always makes the heads turn.
wow you're really getting the deep shine with polishing this channel Jay big big things coming your way 👍👍👍
Love my 2012 FRB XKR-S.
An XK Dynamic R
It has the same exhaust, suspension, gearbox and seats as the R-S, but with regular facelift "Speed and Dynamic pack" bodywork.
Not as aggressive as the R-S, but a little nicer than the 75
Officially it was only given the standard 503bhp of the regular production XKR, but I've heard it said that was a conservative estimate.
Looks perfect in the French blue! They came down in price a few years ago but have gone back up.
Love the dig at Holden haha. Who are we kidding, we little Aussies love a mention, even got one in the RCR Saab special
Thanks J, good car, but I just cant get over how the front looks. Also 10 year old tyres?!
The front end is the best part I think
Happy days.
I love everything about the xk rs maybe one day I'll have one next to my xjl and my corrado
These are just about the most perfect GT car ever made!
Trust James to get up early on a Sunday morning! Good lad. My XK8 is languishing in the garage with a “security” code fault so I believe not delivering petrol. Should have forked out more for a X150 XK but love the interior of the older XK8. And the noise!
The best GTs ever made. They're all heavy, this was light, a game changer for the GT segment.
I miss mine and very much maintain it’s one of the best sounding cars every made.
Jay you haven't review the X150 4.2 XKR yet. Some say this is the best XKR X150 for real world driving. Please review. Thanks.
Excellent reviews as always James! Regarding the looks - I actually do prefer the looks of this facelifted model over the previous iterations, HOWEVER (I had to), the looks of the R-S are indeed too over the top. The standard models are much prettier.
Loving all the jag content recently James 👍
I love these "old" Jags, they sound epic. Great video as usual ole bean. thanks.
Always loved the XKRS
With this run of jags recently, time to give the f-pace svr another go now in facelift trim
They also did an XKR-S GTR-SRS they only made 2 other them though. Very rare
Jags (and “astins”) only take a very subtle body kit, and they tend to age them more so, otherwise they often look better with age.
Great video James 👍
Absolutely a looker.
He mentioned me! I'm in love!
That French blue Jag🔥🔥
I disagree that Jaguar had the bad boy image from the X150's. The earlier XJ's always had a bad boy image esspecially when all blacked out. Same with the X100 XKR's which always looked very cool.
I had 2 of them but very Sensitive but very beautiful
I quite liked the front end, stood out from the older model. I'd be happy with either. I was put off by the XK due to the humungous steering wheel, I know you get used to them similar to putting a larger coffee table in your living room :) But, as I ended up with the F-Type R, I have to say that it's the best but not as limited. Nice job on the Jag theme Jay!
Those big wheels with the power steering make dancing it round a corner really quite easy, they are quite well balanced.
I like the look of the car overall, but I can definitely see a bit of "Mitsubishi Eclipse" in that front face.
I want one! Nice video!!
I want one. - in that French Blue please!
Good to be bad, without doubt the single best car advert....ever!
Italian racing red I believe it’s called. I looked at a regular XK recently in that colour. I’m sure same as Land rovers Firenze red but lovely regardless. Sadly car was too much for my budget and replacing school run car is next up
Wait are you saying it's to loud and that's why your one the fence of the looks?
It's seems pretty tame desigm to me.
I think Alexanders Prestige had a white one for sale a few months ago.
Hi and another beautiful car and a great colour
I’ve owned two of these cars and they were both brilliant, had an Italian racing red one like this one and one in French racing blue. Absolute widow makers, ran Michelin Cup2’s on both and uprated brake pads from Carbotech.
Both cars nearly killed me, well i say that I nearly killed myself in them 🤦🏻♂️
The only Jag i have ever owned was the infamous but not great X-Type 4WD Estate, it rattled it's way down the road
to the next petrol station, i can only describe it as a disaster.
It was replaced very quickly by a BMW 3 series touring, ohh what a difference, no more rattles and sensible fuel economy
and far superior bulid quality.
To me Jaguar have made some very desirable cars, but quality and reliability has been sadly lacking in far too many.
In todays world of ever increasing petrol prices, they are not a daily driver, still desirable if you can afford to run one
as a weekend car.
Lovely to see, thanks 😊
i just had an eargasm. the Jag v8 is the best sounding v8 on the planet
I all of a sudden want one of these
That front looks a bit 'aftermarket stick-on' but you don't see that when you have all the fun.
LOL - If this is a mid life crisis then I want one.
6:27 looks similar to a popular JDM
Definitely looks the part 🔥
