Loved this video, spot on. I miss my XKR but as a daily driver, the car had to go after a year. But if I'm honest, I think I made a mistake. Yes, the car has a tendency to want to kill you if you don't treat it with respect, 1 in 5 times filling up someone will compliment the car (which is great but you will always be noticed), for an older car you still worry where you park it. It costs a fortune to run. The car taught me that I wasn't the driver I thought I was and should consider advanced training. Or that the 0-60 was irrelevant as the car's power was in its ability at 80-???. It becomes part of your life, an attachment. Not all these points are negatives by any means quite the opposite, but I don't think I was expecting all these points when considering ownership. Nieve? Probably.(i certainly prepared for the fuel, insurance and tyres).
But the car is so alive and every trip felt like an event. However, before all cars like this reside themselves to museums and pictures in classic car books. When I'm driving around in an electric car as everyone will be. At least I will be able to show my grandkids that grandad had a full-fat V8 that sounded and drove like at any minute it would pull off the road and eat a flock of sheep.

Richard Johnson It’s quite depressing that this type of car is a dying breed. When you’re driving it, it feels like a living breathing thing - it’s unlike anything else I’ve driven. I love it. Yes it’s expensive to own and run, but I find myself justifying it in my head. You do get attached to it. The low front spoiler makes me panic every time I approach a speed bump too. It’s quite sad because it feels like it’s an end of an era. I’m sure that if Jaguar release a new XK one day, it will be some sort of V6 turbo or a hybrid of some sort which just won’t do 😔

@@HighPeakAutos Agreed, I think this is the time for every petrol head who is lucky enough to be able to afford this type of car and in a position to buy one, to take the chance. I’m 6’3 and actually found the seats very comfortable and I also had enough head- and legroom. Besides it was amazingly easy to drive - and of course scaringly fast if pushed (0-60 about 5 seconds). I've had my 2008 XKR Portfolio coupe for 6 trouble free years now. I only drive it in the summer so I haven't put many kilometres on it, but I am absolutely thrilled with it. My car has the 420hp engine, and although it will still spin the tires unexpectedly, I find the car is quite manageable. It is absolutely stunning in celestial black (blue in the sunlight) with 20" Cremona wheels. My previous vehicle was a 2003 Mercedes CL500, and although I found a lot of similarities in the ownership experience, I much prefer the XKR. It might just come down to constant attention (admiration) the XKR gets. I expect I will retain the car for many years to come.

Hi Matt, What a wonderful car. I look forward to every new video you post. As for the XKR, I agree with every point you made. We should do everything we can to keep the V8 alive. That is why I decided to buy a 2004 XK8 two years ago. It doesn't have the power of an XKR and the engine sounds very restrained as long as it is driven in the normal rpm range.
But I like the styling and the interior finish with lots of leather and wood.

Love the review. I agree with all you say. Since some two years I have a 2013 naturally aspirated XK since I did not want the R version. It is the purity of the sound (no supercharger whine) and the smooth acceleration that in my view make the regular XR even feel even better. Living in Germany I often hit the speed limiter and at this point you feel that there is still much more power available. What more do you need?

But when I test drove different cars back in 2016/early days of 17 (including an F-Type, which ended with the same conclusion as yours) I remember that the first time I saw that added spoiler lip of the R version (not to mention the ugly XK RS frills), it looked to me like it just was a bit too much, like that it does not belong there. My dad had a dark blue 2000 XK8 coupe with a special set of wheels. To this day it is my favorite car. We don't have it anymore, but I fondly remember my late teens taking that car for a drive near our house on some long, straight, but hilly roads where absolutely no one drove. It was right next to a pasture of cows, and on sunny spring/summer days I'd take it out on this one mile-long stretch of the road and just floor it back and forth, sticking my head out the window and yelling pure happiness as the smell of burning tires filled my nose. In a giddy panic I'd slow down when I noticed the end of the road coming up and the speedometer was in the triple digits, turn around at the road end, and do it all over again.
God, I miss that car so much. Once I have the means I absolutely will have one again.

I have owned my white XKR, identical to this one, since 2018 and every year around this time I start thinking about taking her cover off, and pulling her out of the garage. One commenter noted that the XKR is almost a living thing and I cannot agree more. It becomes a part of you. I live in Maryland (United States), with copious deer and I find myself creeping along wooded areas, eyes peeled for one to jump out. I often tell people that if I hit one, it better run (fast) or die, because I am coming after it.
Thank you for this excellent review. I do love this car and though it annually tries to end my life, I cannot conceive of any event that could make me turn it loose.

I've got a '07 XK, and '10 XKR. You have key locks under a removable cover on the door handle, not just the boot.
Yes, the XKR wants to kill you! The XK is a softer and more supple ride while the R series tends to be more tight and jarring. You do not relax in an XKR when driving windy roads. The car will demand your attention with every road bump and twitch of your right foot.
Fair warning.... For the 2010 to 2012 5.0l engine, an engineering design flaw in the timing chain tensioner system can cause catastrophic engine failure if not addressed as soon as it is noticed (rattling noise). Note: Jaguar redesigned these components in late 2012 to address the problem. Retrofitting the earlier motors with the proper parts will set you back a couple grand.

One of us doesn't like the objectionable references and prejudice stereotypes, (greenpeace members, vergetarians etc) - It's a free country I suppose but for me the nose picking is the most off- puttingly disgusting habit. You'll be eating it next! :-) What would your mum say? But yeah seriously, honestly - Please get your driving position fixed and keep both hands on the wheel. You might just find you can control these powerful cars a LOT better. It really is the place to start with improving your technique. I love almost all good or interesting cars and have owned or driven loads of "dream" cars over the years, so I cannot understand why I end up wasting time watching your videos. But I do, so despite the all of the above, you must be doing something right. Ok, could be Covid related boredom but, Well done.
Oh yeah where were we, (in my troll cave) XKR's by the way are a bit of a well kept secret. Pricey, yes, but not crippling considering the original price Circa £80k. I had the pleasure, courtesy of Jag of taking an XKR up to an indicated 175 mph on the Gaydon test track up at Aston Martin during the financial crisis just before the new XJ was launched when sales were through the floor. The supposed 155 mph limiter only kicked in at that speed. XKR-S's are just too powerful for their own good and will kill you and your family and cousins. Very impressive but I still prefer my E39 M5 overall as a drivers car for continent crossing. Luckily it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks, we are all right. Rant over, blood pressure back to normal. Good night, Stay indoors, Drive safely, Protect the NHS, Save Lives

I bought one new in 2009. Lovely car and definitely a keeper. I have had very few problems with mine. Like others have said I am surprised at your mpg figures. I get 26 on a long run and short runs around 21mpg. I drive it hard as well but have never had less than 21. As for door handles and such like. I take your point, but they were all new to me and work well so not a problem. I love mine for the sound it makes and also for the look of it. It is pure art . Yes, highest tax bracket, but my insurance is cheap enough at 140 pds per year. Bear in mind that if you do need jag parts they can be an arm and a leg. You don’t understand until you drive one. The 911 has all the sterile charm and surgical-grade precision you’d expect from a German, but the quirks make the XK feel so much more human. Sir William Lyons said the car is the closest thing we will ever create to something that is alive, and that is perfectly exemplified in the XK. Great video.

Hey buddy, back again. So funny story: I commented a year or so ago when I had my 4.2L XKR and sold that for my Ferrari. I loved my Ferrari and just sold it last month for a profit, and I'd been looking for another car to replace it. I was *this* close to buying a MK3 Audi TTS or a MK2 Audi TTRS, but the deals I'd been eying while closing the sale of the Ferrari dried up and inventory shortages made it difficult to find a good one at a good price - hence why I commented on your MK2 Audi TT video a bit ago. So I started looking at Jaguar F-Types, but I just couldn't get over the 5.0 V8 and the uniqueness of the XKR (they're so much less common than F-Types). So, I pulled the trigger on a 2014 XKR white just like the one in the video here! It's shipping at the moment and I can't wait to get back into another big British V8 with that loud, deep burble it makes. Kind of come full circle again, haha.

It was smooth - a lot smoother than I expected, but then about 10 years ago I had restored a 67 xke (WHY OH WHY DID I SELL THAT CAR?!?!?!?!?! ok tantrum and regrets over with). Driving this was a dream. When I went to the dealership, I had planned on the F Pace or the XF or maybe a Land Rover, but then I spotted my heart in a beautiful blue and it roared a whisper to me 'buy me'. I believe that Monday when I drop off my 528 off for service (again) - I will probably be driving this home. You only buy a car like this as a summer toy. Where I live the roads in winter turn into semi mud tracks as farmers trail muck everywhere, lime off limestone tracks trails up the roads and of course salt. Clean a car in North Yorkshire on Monday and it will need doing again 24hrs later. Jaguar may borrow parts, but they have moved on fro the squashed Beetle design of the 1940's, has more character than any BMW, nicer than Mercedes and nothing from the Orient or the USA comes near. A great review of the XK, I want a dark blue one, one day!

Great review !! its really how it is. The love for the car vs reality in life. I know the XKR... the review give s a good sense of the XKR, for as far as youtube can. Objectively it makes no sense, no sense at all! but any car lover will be sold as soon as the V8 starts talking.

The xk still looks really good, I've had a look on autotrader and they're so cheap. A steal if you ask me

Moss I agree! It looks and sounds great and they’re fairly cheap as a used buy. What’s not to like 😉

A little expensive on the operating expenses for a daily driver, but great for a 2nd weekend car.

I like Your thougts about this car. It´s really awesome. I´ve driven one of these a couple of years ago but I was kind of confused about the acceleration. You hit the floor and without really feeling a push You are over 100 mph. It does not feel as quick as it is. Felt strange. That somehow disapointed me. Currently I´m driving an old Corvette with a manual transmission and it feels much more fast even if it´s not. Kind regards from Germany, the home of the Autobahn. :D

I grew up driving mk1 & then mk2 cortinas , air con was opening the window , lol
Gadgets really don't bother me if a car looks as good as the jaguar.

Really wish Jaguar just did a basic refresh to this car. Give it a new infotainment system, swap some of those ford/volvo parts for something a bit more premium, add a few new bits of tech, and give it adaptive LED headlights, and voala! Honestly prefer this over the F Type, just a shame they half assed the refresh on the XK in 2013. They couldve used the face lifted Jaguar XF system at the time (2012 refresh), that system is much better then that in the XK.

Should you buy an XKR 5.0 supercharged,? Answer is most certainly yes. In fact i bought one, a 2011 . It's absolutely fab.

Kinda pointless to compare it to an Ftype or a 911. These are different cars. Compare to the 6 series or to the Merc equivalent. All excellent cars, but the Jag is far sexier.

I had an original xk8 convertible. Different animal I know, but a great swift smooth drive. These days Im in a Mazda mx5 mk3 and the manual shift gives me more driver involvment with convertible and economical, lightweight and balance has given me loads to smile about😁

Such a great car for sensible money but just too much power
I find you have more fun driving a slow car fast and being able to use the power the 4.2 xk seems to be the sweet spot IMO
