      One of the greatest songs indeed..simple yet great and thats what interpol does. No one writes tunes like them. There are thousands of more technically advanced bands who basically make shit tunes inspite of all their so called "technical ability" (which in itself is not impressive in the slightest) which does not mean anything if you cannot create something that moves you. Interpol is on another level of songwriting which was only matched by couple of bands in 00s.

      +Yessica Villegas I know Carlos D didn't get that his contribution to interpol's sound was crucial. He used a Fender Jazz bass with a pick and a very clean tone. He does so many cool little things on the bass that just make this song. From what I read, Carlos was not happy "Just being the bass player," and decided to quit. The band was never the same. Paul Banks said in confusion "I mean It[bass] is a major harmonic component." I understand why bass players feel underappreciated in rock music, having played both guitar and bass in many types of bands, but the bass fills a pocket of sounds that only the kick drum really can compete with. You man not always be thinking about the bass sound in a song, but once it is removed you realize that something is definitely missing. And shamefully, Carlos D had such amazing bass lines that threw in bass riffs in between the other instrumental parts, which was nothing short of genius. This song is a perfect example of Carlos' style. The same is true with Incubus. After their original bassist Dirk Lance left circa 2002, Incubus was never the same. Losing a bassist can really affect a band. Luckily when Tool fired their original bassist Paul D'Amour after their first album, they were lucky enough to find Justin Chancellor who is an amazing bassist, albeit very different in tone and style than Paul. So to reiterate my point when tool switched bass players it totally changed their sound. Pre-Aenima Tool has a much crunchier pick bass guitar tone.

    • @kennygerberich4985
      @kennygerberich4985 8 років тому +11

      +john tandberg You put that very well, good sir. I always had trouble picking up the bass whenever I was listening to a song. My friends who are all more musically inclined than me would be like "dude listen to that bass line" and I would have to really strain my ears to get what they were talking about, and even then I wasn't sure if I was hearing what I was supposed to. Carlos D completely changed that for me. His style is so distinct and captivating that once you register his bass lines/riffs it's practically impossible to get lost in any other component of the music without the bass calling you back. It truly is sad if he felt underappreciated.

      durbeyfield oh for sure man. Carlos D had the most amazing bass lines. Some of the best Music I heard at the time. Turn on the bright lights and antics were pure awesome. But he left. And honestly i heard one of his interviews about all of it. He didn't even know who Carlos D was. (Himself) it was all a blur to him. He said the words "I was tired of being a rockstar". Don't really know what was going on between Paul and him but it was really fucking up things. He left in 2010 I think right as they were recording their new album. He never finished the album with them but he did give them all his bass lines for the songs he did record. When the album came out he didn't know what he was listening to because none of his work was in the album. He did leave the band afterall but there is a reason they are not as good.

      +Mr. Brown I clicked this link to find out if his voice was really that good. I think the answer is no, his voice is *better live* because he can sort of do what he wants rather than stick to exact production. I don't know the correct terms for the thing I am trying to convey, but it is good to know Interpol sounds better (in my opinion) live than in a recording studio. How many bands can claim that in recent years?

    One of the finest indie/rock songs ever written in my opinion.... Along with lazy eye.. Silversun pickups and red eyes.. War on drugs

    The most Joy Division-esque of their songs. But Interpol is twice as alive as Joy Division, obviously :)

    One of the greatest songs ever written. A shame they didn't execute the extended version.
