Buckethead could have chosen to follow fame and accept his place as one of the greatest guitarists of all time (which he is anyway) but instead decided to remain a smaller more obscure artist who is a treasure to those who discover him. His days with GnR put him in the mainstream spotlight but he hated it there and went back to his own independent label to control his sound and image. Legend.
This is my all time favorite song. Man Brian, you don't know the effect...I just recently discovered your music. It has kept me going now for 6 months. My husband of 38 years passed away this past father's day and if I hadn't found your music I d probably be there with him. Thank you for sharing your talent. You're awesome...
I bet if he knew this he would be so humble and embarrassed he would have to confine himself to write another album using his songs to express the deep empty sadness that losing someone so close can bring....he puts all his emotion and expression into his music. Hes such a quiet and unimposing person he tries to express himself in dialogue and people dont understand. Melodies, rhythms, and structure becomes a synesthesia of communication using his music. I treat him as a modern composer, I mean think about how eccentric and socially off putting most of the great classical composers use to be. Beethoven, Mozart, chopin, Bach, that lanky violin guy with weirdly long fingers who would make people lose their minds during his violin solos at his concerts
That's an awesome way to put it. So true. Whitewash is such a beautiful musical narrative. To me, Buckethead's compositions are on a par with his playing. He has an originality to his songs that makes him unique ( of course including the bucket and mask, but that's another story)

So silky smooth, and he doesn't ever rush the song either. Lots of guys wish they could play like this... myself included. When he goes into that slow lead it's so smooth and beautiful!

This music takes me back as a kid to a sound I heard from the late 50's/early 60's. Such a haunting, beautiful melody especially starting at around 2:35. It sends chills down my spine. It seems to me that BH's musical anthology includes almost everything written/played on the electric guitar since it's invention, and each album is an experimental progression in different forms over that time period. You can't call this guy a shredder, heavy metal, hard rock, etc., because he's takes all of those forms and goes so beyond them he can't be simply categorized. Like Hendrix I can understand BH needs to keep moving, but I wish we had more live performances like this one. I think BH will be seen over time as one of the great, great artists by electric guitar's true aficionados. Long live BH!
dooma flatchie So true! The more I listen to music, the more I understand that different music "genres" are actually futile. The greatest artists are always those who leave the limitations of different "genres" behind and go that one step further. BH is the best example here! He can play some of the most brutal "metal" riffs you have ever heard, just to go on with the most beautiful/touching melody you can imagine. But, regardless of what he plays, you always feel that he deeply feels the music - and that's what makes all of the difference. Another example is bands like Opeth. You probably would never have imagined that DeathMetal and Jazz/ProgRock go well together. But once you have listened to these guys, you realize how "restricted" that way of thinking is. And what more there can be, if you just open your mind a bit... (I'll never understand those people who say "I'm a metal fan, so everything must be 'true' metal all the way. If it contains some mellow/melodic parts or gets a bit funky at times, then I feel obliged to find it lame". Same for those people who say "I'm a Jazz/Classic fan, so if it gets a bit more heavy at times, it feel obliged to call this 'mindless shredding', no matter what.")
He is. Anyone with any knowledge of guitar playing knows Buckethead is in a league of his own. You’re right he can’t be categorized. Take Slash for example, great scales player, but that’s about it. Another guitarist that you can’t really categorize is Clapton. He is his main style, but can play blues, jazz, rock, metal etc. pretty much any style.
I'm a late starter to Buckethead. I missed him because I got tired of the same old formula from 'great' guitarists. 500 notes per minute, or doing the same thing for the last 40 years. Thankfully I've got a huge back catalogue of his stuff to catch up on.
