Vertical Gardening: Staking Tomatoes, Peppers & More - Water Soluble Fertilizing & Worm Casting Tea

- Plants will need to be staked and lightly pruned. This is the basic method I recommend for most vertical tower grown plants. I show you how I use water soluble fertilizer (fish emulsion). I also recommend using worm casting tea. The feeding method is a guideline.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I'll probably be getting a Greenstalk next season. We have a lot of squirrels and I can already see them having a great time climbing on it and digging in the pots. Can you recommend any plants to use to deter them I can plant in some of the pots? thanks.

I love the mad hatter pepper plant. I bought the plant last year & brought it inside when it starting getting cold. I put new soil in it and set it back outside today. The thing that I love about pepper plants is they can live three or four years
Where it is warm enough, they are like bushes. And can go longer if pruned well.

The good news is that with these towers, you can grow a lot in one or two of these towers. With tomatoes or peppers, you can get a lot of produce if grown in 5 gal buckets or planters. Don’t wait! Start now. I bought those towers from Dollar Tree for $1.25 a layer, so a 6-layer tower cost $7.50. You can grow a lot of greens or strawberries in one of them on your deck or balcony. Good luck, have fun and save money on food!

Do you ever use the Miracle Gro Organics Edibles Water Soluble Solution? If so can you do a video on it and say how many weeks you should apply this fertilizer for and should you apply something like that early on in the plants life, also when is the plant too mature for that kind of fertilizer?

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I like the Greenstalk supports for two reasons: one, they do support the plants - I can use them to tie strings to support the tomatoes; two - and more importantly - because I keep the tower on my deck it gets moved around a lot and the Greenstalk supports protect the plants from getting bumped by dogs, chairs and kids. (I have a five tier tower with supports on three levels.)
Great content, love your channel. Do you ever foliar feed the vertical garden? And for feeding from the top, do you add the amount of water/tea based on the markings inside the water chamber.
Not really but for the water solubles hitting leaves at time. No real reason. If you get to the roots the plants do all the work

I recommend you use t-shirt strips or pantyhose strips when ‘staking’ then it will not cut into your plant. Greenstalk also has plant supports that will snap onto your layers.

I have new container soil and I use alfalfa pellets to fertilize in the spring and fall. There is the odd feed of fish emulsion as well. Should I look into getting a higher -PK water-soluble fertilizer for blooming stage or is the alfalfa and good new soil enough for now?
So its up to you. You just need P and K present even if in low amounts. But containers can be tricky. This is where I might use the chemical ferts at 1/2 strength to give them some higher P and K 1x. Or look for organic.

Hi Gary, I'm new to your channel. I would like a comparison on the amount of soil, fertilizer, compost and worm casting to set up a vertical tower. Just want to see if this is more cost effective and given that the pockets are so deep, how can the plants get enough sun. Thanks,
Thanks for following me. So I cant really give you a comparison but these hold 7 gallons of material. You dont need all 3 in a tower. I do that sometimes. Other times maybe just compost. Compost is golden. So if you can make a lot, it's free. It has casting and has NPK and more. The deep pockets is what makes this brand the best IMO. Watering is too often an issue and 7 gallons gives you some help in not accidentally letting the tower soil dry out. A few pockets maybe limited by sun but mine sit in a place where the rising sun and setting sun hit most pockets. You can buy a spinner it sits and and rotate it every couple of days too. Good luck.

Have you ever considered using strips of panty hose or tee shirts for tying up those heavy plants?. It would be a shame to have the string cut the stems due to the weight of the branch. If I use string I make it two to four strands to make it wider.

Do you have to empty the tower from soil at the end of the growing season.
I don't. I leave it in for the season. Some times I just grow in it a second time. I just lay the 5 container out (unstack it) and mix in a couple handfuls of granular for the next season.

So I bought 2 of these last year. I use Mel's mix in them and put strawberries in them. The strawberries did real well... but didn't survive through the winter. How do I keep my strawberries alive through the winter? I live in a 6a zone (near St. Louis). Thanks!
They are cold hardy. Mine stay out 24 7. You would have to over winter them in a garage or protected area.

I used these towers for the first time last year. Everything grew fine but yield was minimal. Has anyone found what grows best in towers? I tried lettuce and basil last year in these.
I would go with increase your water-soluble feeding. That can make a difference

if you fertilizer from the top if you don't want to loose all the fish imulsion and water just reclaim it into another bucket on the bottom by directing hose into bucket

I want to buy those, they are expensive in my area currently
They are but one thing is the UV protection. Mine sits out year round and one is 5 years old. No brittling or cracking. That is a big deal as the cheaper ones often degrade in the sun. So make sure you check brands for UV protection.

Last year I cut some bamboo shoots for stakes and a few trellises. I noticed a lot of mold growing on the bamboo and then spread to the plants . Have you ever had this issue ?

do you have to turn the towers for max sunlight?
Certain sides do get maximum sun. Depends on how you place them. All sides of this get light as there is no shade. So all sides get plenty.

Can I plant cucumbers and eggplants and zucchini and squash ?
Well I have done bush cukes in the bottom that can work. Standard eggplant get to heavy. And squash and zukes, less you find a small bush type... just get too big.

For some reason my plants aren’t growing as they should. I thought they had a nitrogen deficiency so I gave them a shot of miracle gro but there still a little light green?

I know this is probably a strange question but is the fish emulsion fishy smelling when you use it. Just curious because I have certain animals around me and I don't want them digging my plants up.

I started gardening 4 months ago, successfully. I live in the City and am gardening from an elevated garden box. I have peppers, herbs, flowers in that box. My question for you is>>>I have an Anole (lizard) now living in there. I don't want to move it, but if it is hurting my veggies, I might have to relocate him to my front flower beds. Are thy harmful? You can see my little guy in the first vid on my channel.
Well... we don't have them here. I don't know what it is. If it is eating plants that is bad. Some lizards eat insects and that is good. I would look up to see what they eat.

We have tons down here, they eat bugs, not plants.

Just got my first GreenStalk. I read worm castings contain eggs that turn into worms. Is that true? It sounds great for nutrients, but don't want live worms.
Depends. Vermisterra has super low chance of eggs, as their castings are aged. You can find them in any of my video descriptions. Worm casting with worm compost in the mix, usually can have eggs.

I have used fish fertilizer from the top and it made a mess and gunked up the watering system. I would not recommend anything from top that has an oily feeling to it.
